The European Union is working on a plan to let police stop cars by remote control.

The plan is part of a push for more surveillance and tracking measures by law enforcement authorities, the London Telegraph reported.

It calls for all European cars to be fitted with a special device that would shut off gas to the engine and turn off the ignition so police would be able to stop cars remotely from a control room.

The plan is still in the early stages, but government watchdog groups are already speaking out against it.

One conservative member of the British Parliament warned that such measures are leading to government by an unaccountable secretive group.

Nigel Farage, the leader of The UK Independence Party, called the measure "incredible" and a "draconian imposition."

"It is appalling they are even thinking of it," he said. "People must protest against this attack on their liberty and vote against an E.U. big brother state during the Euro election in May."
