The 52 passengers trapped on a research ship stuck for more than a week in the Antarctic are rescued not by sea but by air.

A rescue team aboard a helicopter shuttled the passengers to a nearby Australian vessel.  They were originally going to airlift the passengers to a Chinese Icebreaker, but sea ice prevented even this ship designed to navigate ice from reaching the vessel.

The passengers were carried a dozen at a time in a five hour operation.

All 22 crew members are planning to stay with their icebound vessel, which is not in danger.
