The family of Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman who was sentenced to death in Sudan, is suing to annul her marriage in a new attempt to stop her from leaving Sudan.
An annulment would also mean Ibrahim's husband, Christian U.S. citizen Daniel Wani, would not be recognized as the father of the couple's two children, 21-month-old Martin and 2-month-old Maya.
The news comes after Ibrahim's father dropped a lawsuit earlier last week to formally establish her as his daughter.
The mother of two was sentenced to death in May on charges of converting from Islam to Christianity. An appeals court eventually overturned those charges after international outcry, but her Muslim father and his family still maintained a legal case, arguing that she belongs to them and the Muslim religion.
Ibrahim said she is not bound by Sudan's Islamic law because she was born and raised Christian by her mother while her father was out of the picture.
Tina Ramirez, founder of Hardwired, an organization that works to end religious oppression around the world, has been calling for Sudan's government to end its delays and unconditionally release Ibrahim.
She says it's critical that international support continues for Ibrahim with more pressure on the Sudanese government on her behalf.
