The brutal jihadist army ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is taking even more ground in northern Iraq, after attacking an oil refinery near Baghdad.

A top security official says the Sunni jihadists have now laid siege to Iraq's largest oil refinery, 155 miles north of Baghdad.

The seige is threatening the country's domestic energy supplies. They began firing mortar shells at the refinery overnight.

Kurdish fighters from northern Iraq are also battling ISIS to save Baghdad from falling into the hands of extremists.

Iraq's army is coming up from the south to meet the oncoming wave of insurgents overrunning towns.

The United States is now sending almost 300 troops to help secure American facilities, including the embassy.

One refugee in a nearby camp, who served in Iraqi intelligence, told CBN News the Islamists have ambitions to take control not only of Iraq, but eventually Europe.

"We know that ISIS is not dreaming just to rule over Iraq, but they are dreaming to go to Europe and rule over all of the European continent. And, if I'm allowed to say, ISIS is dreaming to rule over the whole world," he said.
