A bishop in China's underground Catholic Church has died after years of imprisonment.
Joseph Fan, the bishop of Shanghai, spent decades in labor camps and under house arrest.
Pope John Paul II appointed Fan in 2000, but the Chinese Communist party put him in prison because it does not recognize the Vatican's right to appoint leaders.
He remained in custody until his death this week after a brief illness.
Bishop Fan was 97 years old.
