Sudanese War Plane Bombs Catholic Hospital

A Sudanese war plane bombed a Catholic hospital in the Nuba Mountains of southern Sudan, leaving one person injured.

The 80-bed Mother of Mercy Hospital, which was at triple capacity at the time of the attack, suffered heavy damage. It's the only medical facility in the region.

The Islamic regime in Khartoum has waged war against black Africans and Christians in the Nuba region for decades.

Tom Catena, an American doctor at the hospital, told the news website NubaReports that Sudan's government wants the people of the region to leave, so the military is trying to destroy infrastructure and "demoralize everybody."
 
Meanwhile, Bishop Macram Max Gassis called on Sudanese President Omar Bashir, who is wanted by the international criminal court for crimes against humanity, to protect the hospital from future attacks.

"International law demands that civilians are protected during conflicts," Gassis said. "But the attack on the hospital is a direct violation of this fundamental humanitarian principle. It is a violation of the sacredness of all human life, which we must protect at all costs."
