FBI Director James Comey said only about a dozen Americans are fighting alongside Muslim extremist groups in Syria.
Comey said previous reports that 100 American citizens are fighting in Syria have been misinterpreted.
He added that more than 100 U.S. citizens have tried to go and failed, or successfully went and are already back home.
Americans who have returned after fighting with extremist groups are under investigation or have been arrested.
At least two Americans have been killed in the fighting and at least 13 have been arrested.
