Top security officials in France say they've arrested an Islamic jihadist in Paris who was planning an attack on at least one church.

In a press conference Wednesday, the country's interior minister says the suspect - whose name has not been released yet - is a 24-year-old Algerian computer science student.

He was arrested Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance. That's when police found an arsenal of weapons and notes about potential targets in his car.

"Documents were... found and they prove, without any ambiguity, that the individual was preparing an imminent attack, in all probability, against one or two churches," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

The man is also accused of killing a young woman shortly before he was arrested.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manuel Valls reminded French citizens that the country was facing an "unprecedented terrorist threat."

France has been on high alert since the deadly January attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket

"Terrorists are targeting France to divide us," AFP quoted the French leader. "And our response must of course be to protect citizens but also to rally together, unite and to be hugely determined faced with this terrorist threat."
