The terror group known as ISIS, or Islamic State, has reportedly taken to Twitter calling on Muslims to honor and celebrate the men who massacred 12 people in Paris by killing more Westerners.
ISIS has reportedly launched multiple Twitter accounts encouraging Muslims living in the West to launch so-called "lone wolf" attacks.
On Wednesday, January 7, two brothers, Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi, were suspected of murdering journalists at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo. Days after the attack, one Twitter account praised the brothers saying, "Muslims should learn from the lions of Islam" and follow their example.
Vocativ, an online news site, grabbed several tweet posts in English reportedly from ISIS sympathizers:
"You are a Muslim? Living in the West?! You're the right person to become a city wolf!" one tweet read. "You are already a citizen, riding the same buses and trains. The same neighborhoods."
Another tweet reads: "If you claim that you follow the Prophet - SHOW US THAT!"
These posts have since been taken down.
All this has placed U.S. authorities on high alert. The fear is that these new postings on social media will inspire more lone wolf attacks.
"The thing that worries me the most right now is the buzz on social media, whether it comes from a specific brute like ISIS or whether it's just on the chat rooms," said Richard Burr, chair of the U.S. Senate's Intelligence Committee.
Meanwhile, al Qaeda in Yemen has taken responsibility for the Paris attack, saying the group planned and financed the operation to avenge the Prophet Mohammed.
In an 11-minute video, Nasser nin Ali al-Ansi, a senior leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, reportedly praised the terrorists as "heroes" and said the attack marked a "turning point in the history of confrontation."
Al-Ansi also called on Muslims everywhere to turn against the West.
The video ends with this message: "Rise up o Muslim youth in support of your prophet. Be generous with your lives like your predecessors did. Take vengeance for the Muslim blood that is spilled, the honours that are defied."
