UN Security Council Meets on Yemen Crisis

01-26-2015

The United Nation's Security Council is holding a closed-door meeting Monday to discuss the deepening political crisis in Yemen.

Shiite rebels, known as Houthi, seized control of the presidential palace late last week, in effect ousting the country's president and prime minister, who both resigned in response to what the prime minister called "total deadlock."

The Shiite minority has controlled most of Yemen's capital, Sana'a, since September.

Over the weekend, rebel forces attacked and detained demonstrators protesting their power grab in the capital.

The increasing crisis in Yemen has raised fears that the country's powerful al Qaeda branch will grow even stronger, prompting some U.S. senators to ask President Barack Obama to send more U.S. Special Operations Forces to hotspots in the Middle East.
