Boko Haram terrorists killed at least 40 people in Nigeria as voters cast their ballots in this weekend's presidential election.

Saturday's attacks were reminiscent of the 2011 election, when suicide bombers filled several cars with explosives and blew them up across the city, killing more than 150 people. Many Christians were targeted for their faith.

The country's believers are praying for peace.

"There is fear because of previous experience, you know, because of 2011, you know, those that were in Kano wouldn't want to stay back because of what  they experienced. So actually there is fear that the same thing may still re-occur," Peter James Ina, senior pastor at Banner of Life Bible Church, said.

This year's race has come down to a critically close contest between President Goodluck Jonathan, a 57-year-old Christian from the south, and former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari, 72, from the predominantly Muslim north.

Election results are expected at some point Monday.
