Canadians ended 10 years of Conservative Party rule Monday by voting in a new liberal prime minister.

Justin Trudeau, the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, is the country's new leader.

"Tonight Canada is becoming the country it was before," Trudeau told a victory rally in Montreal.

Trudeau's liberal party won the majority of Parliament's 338 seats recieving 39.5 percent of the votes. Trudeau's victory brought an end to Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's near-decade run in office.

Harper was one of the longest-serving Western leaders. He had lowered taxes and was a big supporter of oil and gas exploration, pushing for the keystone pipeline.

The Associated Press reports, Trudeau's victory could result in improved ties with the United States, at least for the remainder of Barack Obama's presidency.

Trudeau is the second youngest prime minister in Canadian history.
