Canterbury Archbishop Meets with Pakistan Christians

In a show of support for Pakistan's embattled Christian community, Rev. Justin Welby, the new Archbishop of Canterbury, is meeting with the country's faith leaders Thursday.

Pakistan is a Muslim nation with a tiny Christian minority that faces harsh persecution.

In 2013, at least 127 Christians died in an attack on All Saints Church in Peshawar.

Blasphemy laws aimed at protecting Islam are used to imprison Christians and justify attacks against their communities.

One Christian mother, Asia Bibi, is facing a death sentence for a blasphemy conviction.

Meanwhile, Xavier William, one of the Christian leaders scheduled to meet with the archbishop, told the UK Telegraph that he was encouraged by Welby's visit.

"The visit is a positive thing," he said. "It's a sign of hope, but we will have to wait and see if it helps us in the future."
