South Sudanese Opposing Leaders to Meet

09-07-2014

South Sudan's warring factions meet in Ethiopia Thursday hoping to head off a civil war in the world's newest nation.

More than 1,000 people have been killed and 200,000 displaced in ethnic and political violence since mid-December.

Representatives of former Vice-President Reik Machar arrived in Addis Ababa this morning. South Sudan President Salva Kiir says Machar's troops tried to pull off a coup.

Those troops say Kiir is a dictator who tried to disarm them. The fighting dredged up historic rivalries between two ethnic groups. The U.N. says some people were killed simply because of their ethnicity.
