United Arab Emirates Convicts 30 of Brotherhood Ties

09-07-2014

The United Arab Emirates has convicted 30 men of trying to set up a Muslim Brotherhood cell in their country.

The men have been given from three months to five years in prison.

The verdict is part of a broader crackdown on Islamist opposition groups in Arab Gulf countries.

The UAE claims Islamist groups backed by the Muslim Brotherhood have sought to topple its Western-backed ruling system.

The group of 20 Egyptians and 10 Emiratis was also accused of trying to obtain security data, distributing secret information from the security services and collecting donations without permission.

The 10 locals were also convicted last summer of trying to undermine the government.
