JERUSALEM, Israel -- A poll by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion, published Thursday, shows Marwin Barghouti, former head of Fatah's Tanzim militia who's serving consecutive life sentences for murder, is the people's choice to lead a Palestinian Authority unity government.
Some 1,015 Arab residents, 18 and older, from east Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) and the Gaza Strip said they would vote for Barghouti instead of P.A. Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Gaza-based Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh or exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, the Times of Israel reported Friday.
Barghouti is serving five consecutive life sentences plus 40 years for masterminding attacks carried out by the Tanzim militia and al-Aksa Martyr's Brigades.
