People who consume a lot of processed carbs like snack foods, sweets and sugary drinks could face higher risks of breast and prostate cancers.

Researchers found that people who ate more of those foods were much more likely to get those cancers.

Health Day reports that the researchers say their new study doesn't prove there's a link between those foods and those types of cancers.

"Few dietary factors apart from alcohol and/or obesity have been consistently related to postmenopausal breast cancer and prostate cancer," said Marji McCullough, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society.

According to McCullough, the question of whether carbohydrate quality affects cancer risk -- independent of obesity -- is important. But it's also a "challenging" one to answer, McCullough said.

Although it is difficult to weed out a particular cancer-causing culprit, the new research says its better to cut processed foods out of your diet, and eat more vegetables, whole grains and other healthy natural foods.
