A growing number of politicians, corporations and celebrities are blasting the states of Mississippi and North Carolina for what they call discrimination laws.

This week, Mississippi's governor signed a religious freedom bill that protects churches and wedding vendors from being forced to participate in gay weddings.

In North Carolina, a recently passed law says government bathrooms should be separated primarily by biological sex.

But pressure from outside groups is having an impact. Last week, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a religious freedom bill.

And in North Carolina and Mississippi, LGBT activists and corporations are fighting back, hoping to reverse the laws.

But religious liberty expert Dr. Ryan Anderson told CBN News he's still optimistic about the future of religious freedom in the U.S.

"The reason that big business and the elite sectors of the media have to team up to get the governors to veto them is that the people and their elected representatives are in favor of these bills," Anderson explained.

"So it's very possible for good legislation, good public policy to be passed and we have to encourage, support and defend good public policy," he said.

Anderson says advocates of religious liberty should emphasize that they support diversity, pluralism and tolerance.
