U.S. health officials say there is conclusive evidence that the Zika virus causes birth defects.
Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said research has confirmed the suspicions.
"The study marks a turning point in the Zika outbreak," Frieden said. "It is now clear that the virus causes microcephaly."
Mosquitoes transmit the virus, which causes severe brain defects and abnormally small heads in babies. Microcephalic babies born last year in Brazil coincided with an outbreak of the virus.
Father Frank Pavone, with Priests for Life, said the Zika virus is cause for concern, but it does not justify abortion.
"The child in the womb is a patient too," Pavone said. "And killing one's patient is never an appropriate response."
