JERUSALEM, Israel – Syria claimed Israel targeted a military airbase outside Damascus with surface-to-surface missiles overnight Tuesday. It's the second report of alleged Israeli airstrikes against Syrian targets in two weeks.
According to Syria's semi-official SANA news agency, the missile strikes set off a massive fire at the Mezzeh airbase.
The Israel Defense Forces did not confirm or deny the charges – standard protocol for the IDF.
Meanwhile, the IDF posted a map on Twitter Tuesday evening showing more than 200 locations south of the Litani River where Hezbollah has embedded weapons warehouses, weapons manufacturing facilities, rocket launch pads, and the like inside residential areas in towns and villages.
In the event of another war with Hezbollah, the IDF could potentially target those sites.
The IDF has been closely monitoring Hezbollah's activities, especially since the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006.
U.N. Resolution 1701, issued with the ceasefire prohibited Hezbollah from embedding its military infrastructure south of the Litani.
The IDF continues monitoring weapons shipments to Hezbollah. A week ago, Israel targeted a military convoy on the Beirut Damascus Highway transporting weaponry to Hezbollah.
