JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar this week welcomed the Pacific island nation of Fiji as the seventh country to declare its embassy will move to Jerusalem.
"I commend the Republic of Fiji's government for its historic decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people," Sa'ar posted on X.
He added, "Thank you, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, friend of Israel. Thank you, Fiji!"
Rabuka indicated during the recent Munich conference in Europe last week that Fiji would join the list of countries, initiated by President Donald Trump in 2018, setting up or relocating embassies in Jerusalem.
The United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Paraguay, and Papua New Guinea currently house their embassies here.
In October, 2023, shortly after the Hamas terror attack on Israel, Fijian Deputy Prime Minister Villame Gavoka told JNS News, “Our desire to have an embassy in Jerusalem is very strong. We as a people feel very close to the descendants of Abraham and want to connect with Israel in its entirety.”
Israel's cabinet endorsed the move on Tuesday, and the government said in a statement, "Necessary risk assessments will be undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, in consultation with relevant agencies, prior to and during the establishment process."
