DC Court Bars Trump from Reversing Transgender Troops Policy

10-30-2017

A federal judge has blocked most of President Trump's policy banning transgender Americans from serving in the military.

The president announced the policy in a series of tweets last July. He also said the military would not pay for transgender surgeries.

Trump later issued a formal presidential memorandum and gave the Department of Defense six months to implement the policy.

Several transgender military personnel sued to block the policy and the judge agreed, for the most part, striking down the ban, but leaving the provision of not paying for surgeries.

The Trump administration may appeal the decision.

"We disagree with the court's ruling and are currently evaluating the next steps," said Justice Department spokesman Lauren Ehrsam.

Ehrsam says the lawsuit was premature because the Pentagon was still in the process of reviewing how the transgender policy might evolve.
