Nativity Scene Replaced With Atheistic One

12-20-2015

A Christmas nativity scene was removed from Nebraska's state capitol and replaced with an atheistic holiday scene, and one woman in Omaha is is protesting the city's decision.

Sylvia Driskell has invited Christians to join her in a peaceful demonstration.

"It's coming down to the freedom of every religion but Christianity," said Driskell in an interview with the Omaha World Herald.  "I think it's time that we who believe in God stand up."

The Thomas More Legal Society in Omaha had to remove its nativity scene to make room for an artificial pine decorated as the Tree of Knowledge and electric Human Light candles among with other trinkets to go with the  "Reason This Season" display.

The Omaha World Herald reports that several local atheist and humanist organizations collaborated on the displays, which are to stay up through next week.

The groups reserved the entire public space in the capitol building, leaving no room for the Thomas More legal society.

Space is reserved on a first come, first serve basis. The Thomas More Legal society made their reservation a month after the secular groups.

"A week before Christmas we found that a single atheist group had reserved all four corners for that time slot, "  said Martin Cannon, an attorney representing the Omaha chapter of the Thomas More Society. "They're not content to share the space and have their message but they must exlude us".

Chris Clements of Lincoln Atheists told The Guardian in a recent statement that the purpose of the display is to communicate an atheist perspective this holiday season..
