Hundreds of supporters of an Atlanta fire chief rallied at Georgia’s state Capitol Tuesday to protest what they call his unjust persecution.

Fire Chief Kevin Cochran was suspended and then fired for writing a book that describes homosexuality as perversion.

At Tuesday’s rally, Cochran said his termination sent a message to Bible-believing Christians that "you'd better keep your mouth shut or you'll be fired."

Supporters also signed a petition in support of Cochran.

"I'm going to personally take that letter to the mayor's office and demonstrate that the Christian community is standing as well,” Craig Oliver, pastor of Elizabeth Baptist Church, said.

But Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said Cochran was fired for poor judgment, not for his faith.

Reed said Cochran continued to speak about the book during his 30-day suspension when he was told not to.
