IRS Finally Fesses Up to Tea Party Targeting, and the Numbers Are Huge

06-06-2016

The IRS is finally revealing the names of more than 400 Tea Party and other conservative groups it targeted more than three years ago.

The Washington Times reports the names were released only because several federal judges demanded them to consider a class-action suit against the IRS.

The IRS put those groups under extreme pressure as they sought tax-exempt status, delaying their requests.

It turns out the IRS actually targeted 466 groups, a much higher number than the 298 groups first revealed. Only 426 names were listed because the other 40 groups are not part of the class-action case.

"One thing remains clear: Continued litigation is the only way to force the IRS' hand in order to expose its targeting scheme that was coordinated with the help of the DOJ and other federal agencies so that we can obtain justice for those patriotic Americans who were unconstitutionally targeted by their own government," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel at the American Center for Law and Justice (LINK).

The ACLJ is representing some of the plaintiffs in their cases against the IRS.
