On Sunday, Puerto Ricans will have the opportunity to vote in the Democratic primary and weigh in on the presidential candidates and the best possible rescue plan for the island's $70 billion debt.
Up for play: 67 delegates. It's not enough for Hillary Clinton to clinch the nomination but it could give a significant boost to her or rival Bernie Sanders as they head into a closely contested primary in California on Tuesday, June 7.
A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released Thursday shows Clinton with a narrow 2-point lead over Sanders in the Golden state.
In Puerto Rico, Clinton has snagged an endorsement from Gov. Alejandro Padilla. Both Clinton and Sanders are touting different plans to help the island with its debt.
Clinton supports a House plan to create a control board to oversee limited debt restructuring.
Sanders says he plans legislation to allow the Federal Reserve to give the territory emergency loans and provide broad bankruptcy protections. His plan would also boost Medicaid and Medicare payments to the island and provide $10 billion to rebuild infrastructure.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and the Obama administration back the House bill. Puerto Rican officials are divided and Sanders says it would make "a terrible situation even worse" by supporting Wall Street bondholders rather than ordinary Puerto Ricans.
Puerto Ricans voted for Sen. Marco Rubio in the March 6 Republican primary.
