The White House has announced a proposal to create the first national monument dedicated to gay rights.
The monument would be New York's Stonewall Inn, a gay bar recognized as the birthplace of America's modern gay rights movement.
"We must ensure that we never forget the legacy of Stonewall, the history of discrimination against the LGBT community, community, or the impassioned individuals who have fought to overcome it," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., a co-author of the proposed legislation.
"The LGBT civil rights movement launched at Stonewall is woven into American history, and it is our time our National Park system reflected that reality," he declared.
President Barack Obama is prepared to recognize the Stonewall Inn as a national monument as early as next month to commemorate gay pride in the U.S.
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis and other federal officials are scheduled to hold a listening session May 9 to hear feedback about the proposal.
