Dramatic rescues and flood damage have taken over areas of North Carolina after Hurricane Matthew's destructive path. Thousands of people found themselves trapped in their homes and cars, while several were left dead.

How You Can Help:
Give to Operation Blessing

Rescuers in Coast Guard helicopters helped some people stuck on their rooftops and used military vehicles to reach others, including a woman who held onto a tree for three hours after her car sunk in the flood waters.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory said authorities were searching for five people and fear they may find more victims.

"Hurricane Matthew is off the map, but it is still with us and it is still deadly," McCrory warned.

CBN's Operation Blessing is also in North Carolina helping those whose homes have been destroyed.

"Operation Blessing has been here in Fayetteville, North Carolina. We have been coordinating with local emergency management and pastors and we spent the evening going door-to-door checking on families, loving on them and letting them know that volunteers will be here to help them starting tomorrow morning," said Jody Herrington, vice president of the Operation Blessing's U.S. Disaster Relief & Programs.

More than a million people in South Carolina and North Carolina were without power, according to reports, and at least four separate sections of Interstate 95 were closed in North Carolina.

"People were hit. They weren't hit as directly as we had feared, but it has left a lot of devastation in its wake. Lives have been lost, property has been severely damaged, and there's still continuing risk of flooding going on," President Barack Obama said at a fundraiser in Chicago.

According to property data from firm CoreLogic, insured losses on home and commercial properties would amount to $4 billion to $6 billion, well below Hurricane Katrina's $40 billion and Superstorm Sandy's $20 billion.
