This Thanksgiving America's biggest shopping mall is putting a stop to the Black Friday shopping frenzy. Mall of America is closing it's doors for Thanksgiving to remind the nation what the holiday is all about.
"We've been talking about this for months, looking at the numbers, looking at the pros and the cons," Jill Renslow, the mall's senior vice president of marketing and business development, told the StarTribune. "We're excited to give this day back to our employees so they can celebrate with their families."
For years Mall of America opened its doors Thanksgiving night to let in thousands of people in who wanted to battle for the best deals. But this year the mall will swing open its doors after the Thanksgiving festivities are over.
Thousands of employees will get a chance to spend their Thanksgiving dinners with their loved ones instead of ringing up merchandise.
Renlow hopes this move will "bring that special magic" back to Black Friday.
Many hope other retailers or malls will follow suit, others are skeptical.
"Do I see the rest of the country doing it? No," said Marshal Cohen, a retail analyst with NPD Group. "Do I see it going back in that direction? A little bit."
