Dozens of World War II veterans gathered at their own memorial in Washington D.C., Monday morning.

The ceremony marked the 72nd anniversary of ‘V-E Day’, which took place on May 8, 1945.

On that date, U.S. allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany, which marked the official end of the war in Europe.

Monday’s event was co-sponsored by the Friends of the National World War II Memorial and the National Park Service.

For those who attended the event, like World War II veteran George Krajosky, it was bittersweet. He says his mind was on those who never came back.

Krajosky says, “I think about them. I can picture them in my mind. I feel so bad about them not being here."

CBN News Reporter Erik Rosales asks, "They will never be forgotten?"

He says, "No, not in my prayers anyway."

At 19-years-old, Krajosky stormed the beach of Omaha.

He says the Lord was with him and saved his life many times.

The event was attended by more than two dozen World War II veterans from throughout the U.S.
