Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos announced a major breakthrough in the peace talks between the government and the country's main rebel group, FARC.

Santos' government and the FARC guerrillas say they will reach a peace deal within six months.

Both sides agreed on a plan to deal with human rights abuses committed during the half-century-long conflict.

"We're not going to fail! This is the chance for peace!" President Santos said. "On 23 March 2016, we will be bidding farewell to the longest-running conflict in the Americas."

"Let's join efforts to achieve peace," FARC military commander Rodrigo Londono, better known as Timochenko, posted on the rebel group's Twitter account.

FARC vowed to demobilise within 60 days of a final agreement. The conflict has killed over 220,000 people and displaced millions.
