Country music legend Dolly Parton is extending a helping hand to victims of the Tennessee wildfires by donating $1,000 a month to families in need.
The Gatlinburg native announced the effort on her Dollywood Foundation website, stating that she would help families for the next six months.
"Now I've always believed charity begins at home," she said. "We want to provide a hand up to all those families that have lost everything in the fires and to recover."
The "My People Fund" will be established by Dollywood Companies that includes Dollywood Theme Park, Dream World Resort, Dixie Stampede and Lumberjack Adventure.
"We want to make sure the Dollywood Foundation provides $1,000 per month to all those families who have lost their homes in the fire until they get back up on their feet," Parton added.
More than 700 homes and businesses were destroyed in the Great Smoky Mountains area. At least seven people were killed and 53 others were wounded.
Parton's own theme park suffered no damages, although property managed by the company was destroyed.
"I know it's been a trying time for my people and this assistance will help," Parton said.
