What's That in Your Hand?

CBN.com – Remember when God spoke to Moses at the burning bush? God told Moses He wanted him to go back to Egypt and lead the people out to the promised land. Moses looked and said, Youve got to be kidding Im not the person for a job like that. God assured Moses He would prepare the way and He would provide some pretty convincing miracles. Still, Moses had a hard time believing he was up to the task. He pleaded, I cant speak well, I dont have a college degree, Im a convicted felon please, send anyone else!

Now here we have someone with an obvious opportunity. Wouldnt you like for God to lay out such a clear plan for you and to promise success in advance? That wasnt good enough for Moses. He kept trying to convince God he didnt have any of the necessary requirements for accomplishing this big job. Moses said, They wont believe me. I dont have anything to qualify me for doing something great. God said, What is that in your hand? If you dont remember, it was his shepherds staff, which turned out to be a pretty significant part of his leadership. He turned it into a snake, parted the Red Sea with it, and did some other pretty cool stuff.

If you think youre stuck, dont have any unusual talents, dont have the right degrees, and dont have the credibility to have people take you seriously, let me ask you a question: What do you have in your hand? What natural talents do you have? What is it that you do with excellence? Do you make beautiful candles? Delicious bread? Encourage the elderly? Grow stunning flowers? Handle your children with grace? You get the idea just look at what you have right in front of you.

With Gods help, you may already have everything you need for greatness. Dont balk when you hear your call.

Must-See Movie

At the recommendation of our son Jared, Joanne and I went to see August Rush last night. Now, Im not a movie fan we go occasionally just for an evening activity. I never expect anything other than a two-hour diversion time with Joanne and some greasy popcorn. And the movies I recommend you could count on one hand.

August Rush is a must-see movie. Let me be quick to add that it has gotten horrible reviews. The experts say its annoying, absurd, flawed, silly, soppy, and even yucky. But then I suspect most of these experts are looking for technical perfection, storyline logic, and cinematic excellence. I know nothing about any of those things.

Joanne and I thought the movie was absolutely delightful. What a beautiful story of believing you have a calling and a purpose, of listening carefully, and hearing the music all around you. The music in this movie is amazing and the story is one we all want to believe.

I find most of the transcendent experiences in our lives dont line up nicely with logic and common sense. Thats why theyre especially meaningful. How do you explain or document love, beauty, the smile of a baby, or new spiritual insight? You dont have to. Just enjoy it for the experience and the memories it creates.

Humor: Life is Good

A young technician and his general manager board a train headed through the mountains on its way to Wichita. They can find no place to sit except for two seats right across the aisle from a young woman and her grandmother.

After a while, it is obvious that the young woman and the young tech are interested in each other because they are giving each other "looks."

Soon the train passes into a tunnel and it is pitch black. There is a sound of the smack of a kiss followed by the sound of the smack of a slap.

When the train emerges from the tunnel, the four sit there without saying a word.

The grandmother is thinking to herself, "It was very brash for that young man to kiss my granddaughter, but I'm glad she slapped him."

The general manager is sitting there thinking, "I didn't know the young tech was brave enough to kiss the girl, but I sure wish she hadn't missed him when she slapped and hit me!"

The young woman was sitting and thinking, "I'm glad the guy kissed me, but I wish my grandmother had not slapped him!"

The young tech sat there with a satisfied smile on his face. He thought to himself, "Life is good. How often does a guy have the chance to kiss a beautiful girl and slap his general manager all at the same time!

CNN recently listed the Weirdest work stories of the year. Here are just a few. As usual, weve had a wealth of incidents from work that no one would be proud of:

"Employee eats 32 vending machine items for charity"
A juvenile probation officer ate one of every item in a county courthouse vending machine in one day. She consumed more than 7,000 calories and more than 300 grams of fat, eating such items as beef sticks, candy bars, Pop Tarts, and potato chips all to win a bet with co-workers and raise $300 for charity.

"Cola wars get physical as Pepsi worker attacks Coke employee"
Two employees from the rival companies got into a tiff over shelf space in the aisle of a Wal-Mart in Indiana. The Pepsi worker allegedly assaulted the Coca-Cola employee, hitting him in the face, giving him a black eye, and breaking his nose. Police say the two were also accused of trying to run each other over with pallets full of soda bottles.

"Alleged robber asks victim out for date"
After two men robbed a Domino's Pizza delivery woman, one of them called the victim from his cell phone to apologize and to ask her out.

"Salt lands McDonald's employee in jail"
A McDonald's employee was arrested, jailed, and is facing criminal charges because a police officer got sick after a hamburger he ate was too salty. The employee accidentally spilled salt on some hamburger meat and told her supervisor and co-worker, who "tried to thump the salt off." The employee was charged because she served the burger "without regards to the well-being of anyone who might consume it."

"Employee accused of faking being a cop"
A Taco Bell employee was arrested for impersonating a law enforcement officer and attempting to arrest his managers and co-worker. He passed himself off as an undercover narcotics investigator, going as far as typing fake criminal histories on the general manager, two shift managers, and an employee and telling them they were going to be arrested.

"Employee took 1 million screws home from factory"
An assembly worker hid screws in a specially designed hiding place and took up to 7,000 home with him every day. Over a two-year period, he stole more than 1.1 million screws with an estimated value of $155,000. He allegedly sold the screws over the Internet at discount prices. More weird work stories.
