The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Wednesday, August 12, 2009 GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. President Obama is going on the road to support the health care bill. He’s trying to convince Americans that the system needs to be reformed. KRISTI WATTS: And in addition to that, Gordon, he’s also trying to convince them that the federal government should also play a major role. David Brody has a look at this President’s strategy. CARE DAVID BRODY: The White House knows their best weapon to pass health care reform is the President himself. So Mr. Obama will press his case in town hall meetings later this week in both Montana and Colorado. He has some work to do. The latest Rasmussen Poll shows a steady slide in support for reform with just 42 percent now favoring the plan, 53 percent against it. And while poll numbers sink lower, the anger and volume at town hall meetings across the country just keeps on getting louder. Listen to Senator Claire McCaskill trying to fend off an angry mob in Missouri. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri): I don't understand this rudeness. What is this? I don't get it. I honestly don't get it. Do you all think that you're persuading people when you shout out like that? Beg your pardon? You don't trust me? Crowd: No! DAVID BRODY: Big government skepticism seems to be at the heart of the problem for the White House. Some come to these town halls saying Obama's a socialist or a new name: “Obamadinejad.” Even this guy in Oregon brought a sign of Obama looking like Hitler. Man: The President is now supporting genocide against the American people to keep the bailout of the financial interest going. It's no different than Hitler's program. Rep. David Wui (D-Oregon): It is an outrageous falsehood that there is anything like what you are talking about. DAVID BRODY: The President's job is to now play fact checker. That was on display at his own New Hampshire town hall on Tuesday. President Barack Obama: Where we do disagree, let's disagree over things that are real, not these wild misrepresentations. DAVID BRODY: The President says do not believe the scare tactics like, for example, that seniors will have their Medicare benefits cut back. The President says AARP would not have endorsed his plan if that were the case, but AARP says they haven't endorsed any health care proposal yet. The biggest challenge for this President may be overcoming the talk in the bill about “death panels.” Critics say the bill would essentially create a bureaucratic panel that would make end-of-life decisions for Americans. Obama says that's just not true. President Barack Obama: The intention of the members of Congress was to give people more information, so that they could handle issues of end-of-life care when they're ready, on their own terms. DAVID BRODY: This White House has also come under criticism for asking people to inform them of people or groups that are spreading fishy rumors about the President's health care proposals. To critics, this feels like Big Brother. It's something Obama had to address during the town hall. Man: I'm one of the people that turned myself in on the White House web page the other day for being a skeptic of this bill. DAVID BRODY: The President says they just want the information, so they can set the record straight. President Barack Obama; Suddenly, on some of these news outlets, this is being portrayed as “Obama collecting an enemies list.” DAVID BRODY: But still, no matter how much the President defends the bill, these town halls simply won't settle down. Man: One day God is going to stand before you, and He's going to judge you. DAVID BRODY: Democratic senators may be starting to get the point. Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pennsylvania): I have a very good idea of the temper of the crowd. DAVID BRODY: Summers are hot, but this one seems hotter than ever, this time on the inside as well as the outside. David Brody, CBN News, Washington. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, this may go down. You look at President Obama, probably the greatest communicator of our generation, and this may go down as just an unbelievable mess-up. How could you let it spin out of control to this degree? If you’re going to make this a major policy change, you’re going to make this one of the signature pieces of legislation for your administration, how can you introduce it and have no information, no ability to control the agenda, and now it’s being controlled by what is already in the bill? You look at what’s now being called death penalties, why in the world would the US Congress put anything in any bill about counseling end-of-life care? What in the world does the federal government have to do with that? But the fact that it’s in there gives plenty of ammunition to the enemies of this bill, the opponents of it. And certainly the status quo has a lot of momentum here. And we all want to keep what medical care we do have. So if he’s looking for some kind of fundamental change in how Americans get medical care, well, he’s stumbled badly out of the starting gate. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. JAIL TIME FOR PRAYING? LEE WEBB: Gordon, two Christians in Florida are facing jail time for praying at a school-related event. A high school principal and an athletic director in Santa Rosa County—that’s in the more conservative panhandle section of Florida—they led the prayer at an appreciation dinner for adults who helped with a field house project. They’re accused of violating a federal court order banning school officials from leading prayers at school events. The men are scheduled to go on trial next month for criminal contempt charges, and they could be fined or even sent to jail. CENSORING BIBLE VERSES LEE WEBB: A Virginia jail accused of religious censorship has agreed to stop a controversial practice of censoring Bible verses. The Rappahannock Regional Jail had been cutting out verses from letters sent to inmates. A mother who sent letters to her inmate son complained. Religious groups and even the ACLU stepped in. An attorney for the Beckett Fund for Religious Freedom told CBN news what the jail’s new policy means for prison ministries. GRAPHIC: ON THE PHONE Eric Rassbach (Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty): I think it means that they need to be able to show this kind of situation to the local prison administration and say, “Look, you may not know about what the rules are, but this jail didn’t know either, and they figured out that they were wrong. And they changed their policy, and that’s what you need to do if you’re suppressing access to religious materials, like the Bible, or to religious worship, like in any prison ministry. LEE WEBB: Under the jail’s new policy, mail clerks will now make sure that inmates receive religious materials sent to them. CHURCHES LEE WEBB: Churches are finding new ways to help people hurting in this economy. Some congregations are even offering career counseling and job fairs. Charlene Israel has more. CHARLENE ISRAEL: Scotts Hill Baptist Church believes in sharing the good news. That includes teaching people in the community how to find a job in today's slumping economy. Elisabeth Sanders-Park (Career Development Author): Jesus was a really practical guy, and a lot of times He would meet the physical need or sort of the perceived need before He would try and teach spiritually. And people can’t hear the good news over the rumbling of their stomachs. CHARLENE ISRAEL: Elisabeth Sanders-Park is a career development author. She is also a Christian. And when she heard about how many people were having a tough time finding work, she put her faith into action. She volunteered to teach a three-day series on job hunting and interview etiquette at her church. For some, the help is an answer to prayer Susan Melton (Attended Free Seminar): I just thought, “Oh, thank God, somebody who is going to help me, who is coming from the same perspective maybe.” CHARLENE ISRAEL: And the seminar isn't just for Christians. Sanders-Park says, “Whosoever will, let them come.” Elisabeth Sanders-Park: We're doing this with the church. I would like to think that the people who are supposed to be here, that God wanted to be here, are here. CHARLENE ISRAEL: And it's not just Scotts Hill. New Beginnings Christian Church has partnered with other churches to organize a financial summit for people in their community. The pastor says helping those who need a hand up is what church is really all about. Rev. Robert Campbell (New Beginnings Church): We're finding that it's our role to help those who don't have food. It's our role to help those to pay their rent. It's our role to just help them to understand and get the information about what they can do in this tough season. CHARLENE ISRAEL: Charlene Israel, CBN News. CLUNKERS AND CHARITY LEE WEBB: The government’s popular Cash for Clunkers program is hurting some charitable organizations. The incentive has been a huge hit with car buyers snapping up rebates by trading in gas-guzzlers for new more fuel-efficient cars. But charities that rely on vehicle donations for funding say they are receiving fewer cars and trucks. Texans Can, a charity that helps at-risk teens and their families, says donors have decided to trade in their vehicles rather than donating them. And the National Kidney Foundation estimates a ten to 15 percent drop in vehicle donations due to the Cash for Clunkers program. DEALERS LEE WEBB: It’s still been a rough time for auto dealers lately, and many of them had their eyes on Washington for help. But one Arizona dealership is counting on a higher source. Here is John Waage. Man: God bless you. Have a good day. Woman: You, too. Man: And we’ll talk to you soon. JOHN WAAGE: The employees of Cardinale Motors in Mesa, Arizona are literally praying their business will succeed in this economic downturn. Both the sales and service teams pray together regularly, and they share their Christian faith with customers in a time of financial uncertainty. Phil Kerr (General Manager, Cardinale Mazda): It's affected a lot of people financially, so absolutely, we go to Him to help us get through some of these tough times. JOHN WAAGE: From the leadership on down, the company is committed to putting the principles of the Bible in action. Phil Kerr: We believe that our Christian-based philosophy throughout the store that we talk about each and every day is getting us through the tough times. JOHN WAAGE: And their philosophy seems to be popular with customers, who keep coming to the showroom and the service center. Phil Kerr: We get a lot of people that like the way we do business. Jeffrey Coe (Customer): Having that belief lets me know that they're trying, trying to do the right thing. I'm more confident that they have good character. Phil Kerr: We're here. The results are we're still in business. JOHN WAAGE: John Waage, CBN News. ELECTRIC CAR LEE WEBB: Good for them. General Motors has unveiled its much anticipated new electric car. It’s called the Volt. There it is. It should be in showrooms by late next year. And GM claims it will get 230 miles per gallon. Economical to be sure, but not an economy car sticker price. It will cost around 40,000 dollars. BUYING GM CARS ON EBAY LEE WEBB: And GM is giving its customers a new way to buy cars on eBay. Rob Chesney (VP eBay Motors): For the first time they will be able to see what amounts to a virtual showroom of California dealer GM inventory. And they will be able to shop across models, across dealerships. They will be able to do it from the convenience of their own home. Inder Dosanjh (Dublin GM Dealer): He’ll have more time to negotiate through eBay in his home comfort level, sitting in his living room. So the biggest fear is negotiations with customers. LEE WEBB: Consumers can negotiate prices of new vehicles with California dealerships. The program’s slogan: “Our best cars, your best offer.” The dealers will offer Chevys, Buicks, Pontiac and GMC vehicles. If the program works out, it could be expanded nationally. Now, Gordon, I know you love eBay. You’ve bought a lot of things over the years. Do you see yourself negotiating for a new car one of these . . . ? GORDON ROBERTSON: No. I think it will be good for advertising. I say that. EBay Motors has sold a lot of cars. And it’s a way to find unusual used cars around the country. But me personally, no, I like to sit in them and drive them before I buy them. But eBay, I tell you, if you want to find wonderful Christian books, eBay is a good place to go. KRISTI WATTS: Good to know. I’ve never done eBay. GORDON ROBERTSON: Never? KRISTI WATTS: No. It kind of scares me. GORDON ROBERTSON: Really? KRISTI WATTS: Because I need to feel it, touch it, see it, before I buy it. Okay. GORDON ROBERTSON: Okay. But it’s just a book. KRISTI WATTS: All right. It’s a book. Maybe I’ll consider books, Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. KRISTI WATTS: Well, coming up, everybody wants to be younger. Well, we’re going to tell you ways to stay younger longer. Man: Your cells really don’t age. They either grow or they decay. If you do things in your life that trigger growth in the cells, and you live life as functionally a young man or woman until very, very late in the game. KRISTI WATTS: Find out how to turn back your body’s clock, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SIMPLEX DIABETIC Announcer: Attention. Man: There was no possible way I could go home and say, “I quit.” * * * GRAPHIC: CINCINNATIC BENGAL BEN UTECHT GORDON ROBERTSON: Plus, the wake up call that took this receiver from the sidelines to the Super Bowl. Ben Utecht: I just remember going back to my room just weeping. * * * GRAPHIC: SIGHTS AND SOUNDS GORDON ROBERTSON: And later, a musical prodigy is born without eyes. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, you may think there is nothing you can do about all the bad things that happen to you as you age. But experts say that if you make the right choices, you can stay healthy and look younger. Lori Johnson has that story. FOCUS: ANTI-AGING LORIE JOHNSON: Betty Brothers discovered the modern-day fountain of youth, complete with six pack abs. It’s a combination of exercise and positive relationships. Betty Brothers (Age 62): My doctor said I had the blood pressure and the cholesterol of a teenager. And he said I was extremely healthy for my age. And I’m 62, and he said, “I probably don't want to see you anymore until you're 65.” So that made me very happy. LORIE JOHNSON: And right on her heels, Maria and Joe Camacho are also growing younger, a complete U-turn from the unhealthy lives they lived months earlier. Maria Camacho (Regaining Health): It just got worse and worse. I got to the point that I didn’t even want to buy clothes. We would go shopping, my husband and I, and I would just start crying right in the store. LORIE JOHNSON: Maria and Joe assumed their declining health and appearance was a normal part of aging. But from your body's point of view “normal” aging isn’t normal at all. Dr. Harry Lodge (Author, “Younger Next Year”): The message we've been given over and over and over again is a lie about what aging should look like. LORIE JOHNSON: Manhattan internist Dr. Harry Lodge did double duty, keeping one eye on his patients who were aging well and the other on new scientific research. The result? The bestseller, Younger Next Year. Dr. Harry Lodge: It turns out that your cells really don't age. They either grow or they decay. And if you do things in your life that trigger growth in the cells, then your body gets stronger, younger, fitter, healthier, better able to resist disease. And you live life as functionally a young man or woman until very, very late in the game. LORIE JOHNSON: Three months from now, we will all be walking on new legs. In fact, most of our body will be new, because most of our cells only live that long. Now, whether the new cells grow or decay depends on how we signal them. And motion is the signaler. Sedentary muscles tell your cells to decay, but when you exercise, your muscles release substances telling your cells to grow. An hour a day, six days a week will produce amazing results. Even deep into your 70s you can double your leg strength in just three months. In addition to exercise, caring about others also signals cell growth. People who do things like volunteer and get involved in a larger purpose live longer, healthier lives. People who are socially engaged have half the mortality of people who are isolated. People involved in a religious community live about four years longer than people who aren’t. But negative emotions like stress, anger and loneliness trigger the secretion of adrenaline and cortisol, which turn off vital machinery inside every cell. Dr. Harry Lodge: They turn off the parts of our body that are built to repair us, to re-do the damage that comes from daily life, to keep ourselves young and nourished and healthy. We know that cancer, heart attacks, strokes and Alzheimer's, interestingly enough, are driven very powerfully by emotional substructures. LORIE JOHNSON: MRI scans of a depressed person's brain reveals areas that actually begin to die off. But those areas come back to life when the people begin positively connecting with others. So in the Bible, when we are told to love and care, it is actually great medical advice. Joe Camacho (Regaining Health): What I try to do is every month is try to think of someone I can help and try to just focus on that person to see how I can help them. LORIE JOHNSON: And happiness is twice as contagious as depression. So we humans are designed to be very physical and positively engaged with others. Pay attention to these, and your life becomes radically better. Lorie Johnson, CBN News. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. Well, it’s Skinny Wednesday. And I’m not being very active anymore. The only activity I do is go cook in the kitchen now. KRISTI WATTS: Yes, but you’re a good cook, though. Side note, love that story. Do you know that really, Gordon, I’m about 65 years old? I just look young because the generation of my cells. GORDON ROBERTSON: You are so amazing. KRISTI WATTS: I know. No, I’m kidding. GORDON ROBERTSON: What’s your secret? KRISTI WATTS: Olive oil? I don’t know. Hey, can I say this real quick? GORDON ROBERTSON: And you have a six-year-old. KRISTI WATTS: I know! GORDON ROBERTSON: Wow. KRISTI WATTS: Well, he’s almost six. I was going to the store the other day, shopping. This was like the best compliment. I loved it. And this woman, she walked right by me. She looks up, she goes, “You look younger in person,” and kept on walking. I was like, “Thank you!” That just made my day. GORDON ROBERTSON: Really? KRISTI WATTS: Yes. It did. GORDON ROBERTSON: People tell me I look much fatter on TV than I do in person. That’s what I get. You tell her she looks younger. You tell me I look thinner. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, next story. How do I transition from that, Gordon? GORDON ROBERTSON: I don’t know. You’re going to have to try. KRISTI WATTS: I’m going to try. GORDON ROBERTSON: Up next. KRISTI WATTS: Up next is a good start to the transition. He racked up 20 felonies before his 20th birthday. Man: My stepdad used to tell me all the time that if I didn’t quit doing what I was doing then I’d wind up in prison. KRISTI WATTS: Find out how this career criminal cleaned up his act, right after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: AT HOME WITH KEVIN LEMAN GORDON ROBERTSON: Coming up later, he wrote the book on birth order and made sex in the kitchen a bestseller. But when Mike Mize left prison, he went right back into his old lifestyle. Then one day, he walked into a room and was changed in an instant. MIKE MIZE WILL DAWSON: Mike Mize was charged with his first felony for aggravated burglary when he was 14 years old. Mike Mize: I went to juvenile for a few days when I caught my first felony, and I stayed on probation pretty much through my whole teen years. I started smoking cigarettes around that time, smoking pot. I just wanted to fit in. I turned 16 year old, started snorting cocaine, just started dipping into bigger drugs, started drinking, started doing ecstasy, acid, and ‘shrooms. I was just rebellious in every sense of the word. My stepdad used to tell me all the time that if I didn’t quit doing what I was doing then I would wind up in prison. WILL DAWSON: When he was 18, Mike was charged with 20 felonies in five counties. Mike Mize: I spent two years in a West Tennessee prison. I served 30 percent of my time and paroled out. After I got out of prison, I continued back into the lifestyle I was living, partying and drinking. And I probably got into more drugs then than I was before I went in. I met a girl, and we started dating. And we were having sex outside of marriage, which led to her getting pregnant after about three months. I wanted to do the right thing, and I married her. During the course of our marriage we had another child, a little boy. WILL DAWSON: After a year and a half of marriage, Mike’s wife left him and the children, and the couple soon filed for divorce. During that time, a coworker noticed Mike’s depression and invited him to church. Mike Mize: When I walked in, the hairs on my neck, my arms stood up. I lost my breath. I experienced a feeling outside of me as well as the inside that I’ve never felt ever in my life. I know now that it was the Spirit of God. I just know that I went up there, and I got on my knees, and I told God that I couldn’t do it and I was ready for His help. And it was that day that I invited God into my life and turned it over to Him. And after I dedicated my life that day, I was a changed person inside and out. The way I talked changed. The way I walked changed. The way I interacted with people changed. The dope smoking stopped, the cocaine snorting, the cigarettes. No more drinking. The old Mike faded away, and there was a new Mike born that day. So after I got saved, I really wanted to be a better person, be a better dad, be productive. I was on fire. I want people to see Jesus in me. I want my children to see Jesus in me. My children want to be just like me, so I want to be just like Jesus. The cross to me means eternal life. It means a second chance. It means forgiveness. If you think you are at your rock bottom, and you don’t have anywhere else to go, if you accept Jesus into your heart and invite Him into your life, then He will never let you down. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON MINISTERS SALVATION GORDON ROBERTSON: He will never let you down, either. And just like Mike, He can make you new. He can make you new. The old Mike faded away, and then there was a new one, a new one that came on the scene, and he came on the scene instantly. The apostle Paul said, “The old things have passed away. Behold, all things are made new.” The world tells you, you can’t change your behavior. The world tells you once you get hooked on some kind of drug you can’t ever shake it. The world tells you you’ve made mistakes and you’ll never be better. The world tells you, you can’t get over it, but God tells you, you can. With God, you can do all things. That’s what Jesus says. All things are possible to them that believe. And what does it take to get that? All you have to do is ask. It’s that simple. It’s a free gift. Salvation is a free gift. The new birth is a free gift. The regeneration of your innermost being is a free gift. All you have to do is trust, ask, believe. If you’ll do that, He will come in. He will make you new. He can forgive you. He can cleanse you. He can be your answer to every need. All you have to have is Him. And when you have Him, then all that emptiness, that thing inside you you’ve been trying to fill up with other stuff—I don’t care what that other stuff is, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, relationships, success, money. What is it that you’ve been trying to fill up? Well, Solomon says, “God has put eternity in our hearts.” And that eternity only gets filled up with the eternal One. So if you want Him in your life, all you have to is ask for Him. Bow your head right now. Pray a very simple prayer. Don’t turn away. Let today be the day that you say, “Yes, Jesus, I want you.” You won’t regret it. You’re not going to lose anything. You’re going to gain everything. You’re going to gain purpose, peace. You’re going to feel righteous and clean, probably something you haven’t felt in a long time. So if this is for you, bow your head. Pray this prayer. Let Jesus into your heart. Let Him take over. Then you’ll see. Then you’ll see. You’ll see what Mike saw. You’ll see a new birth, a new beginning. Pray with me. “Lord Jesus.” That’s right. Say it out loud. “Lord Jesus, I come to you. And Jesus, I open up my heart wide. And I ask that you come in, that you fill me, that you cleanse me, that you forgive me, that you would make me new again. And Jesus, I don’t want my old ways anymore. I want the new ways, the new life, the new birth with you. Hear my prayer. Come into my heart, for I ask it in Jesus’ name.” Father, for those who just prayed, I pray a cleansing. I pray for a renewal of their innermost being, a rebirth, that all the old things would be passed away, and behold, all things would be made new for them today. Set them free, for I ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen. If you just prayed with me, what I want you to do is make a toll-free phone call and let the world know. The Food and Drug Administration says the suicide risk linked with antidepressants varies by age. Reuters reports people under 25 who take the drugs have a higher risk of suicide, but that risk goes down with age. Older adults taking antidepressants don't seem to have the same side effect. In 2005, the FDA issued it's strongest warning, a so called “black box” warning, that says kids and teens using antidepressants have a higher risk of suicide. Two years later, the warning extended to young adults 18 to 24. New studies now show the lowest risk of suicide is actually with the elderly. VICTIMS SURVIVE TYPHOON LEE WEBB: Rescuers in Taiwan have found nearly 1,000 people alive in the area around three remote villages wiped out by Typhoon Morakot. The region was pummeled by the deadly storm over the weekend. Taiwan has seen the worst flooding and mudslides in 50 years. The storm killed more than 60 people, that number expected to go up since many are still missing. Typhoon Morakot destroyed more than 10,000 homes and flooded more than a million acres of cropland. But this time, our very own Scott Ross made a house call on Kevin. And he also got a candid interview with Kevin’s wife, Sande. KEVIN LEMAN SCOTT ROSS: They say they’re just like any other family, but there’s something special about Kevin and Sande Leman. This award-winning psychologist is known for his humor as much as his practical advice. My wife Nedra and I definitely witnessed both. (Interviewing): All right, Dr. Kevin, I’ve followed your career for years. And some of the books, the Birth Order Book, Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours. You’ve written books on sex, may I say it. Kevin Leman: Sheet music. SCOTT ROSS: Sheet music. And then the classic title I think is Sex Begins in the Kitchen. Kevin Leman: Yes. Thirty-two languages, en Español. El Amor Comience en la Cocina. SCOTT ROSS: Now you’ve gone into the agricultural realm, or whatever, farming. The Way of the Shepherd. What happened here? Kevin Leman: It’s a book on leadership, Scott. And we did some interesting research about shepherding before we tackled this project, The Way of the Shepherd. SCOTT ROSS: You mean real shepherds? Sheep and shepherds? I’m from Scotland. Kevin Leman: Oh, yes. It’s big over there, I hear. SCOTT ROSS: Yes, it is. Kevin Leman: And one of the main points in the way the shepherd is, you’d better know your flock. The sheep, so to speak, have to know that you would go that extra mile. They have to feel like you care about them, and that’s missing today. I think one of the best things you do, Scott, is just tell somebody, “Hey, that was a good job. That was a good job.” SCOTT ROSS: What about discipline? Is that an important part of leadership? Kevin Leman: A lot of leaders are perfectionists, and they confuse boundaries with bridles. See, I think you need boundaries in any organization, but it’s not a bridle situation like you’re putting a horse, where you’re micromanaging. SCOTT ROSS: People familiar with Dr. Leman have heard his stories about his wife and kids for years. We were given a rare interview this day with Sande Leman. SCOTT ROSS: Sande, we have cut off Kevin’s mic. Sande Leman: Good. SCOTT ROSS: Yes, a number of people have said that. You’ve been in the background, at least as far as the public is concerned all these years, but he’s talked about you a lot in public. Some books, perhaps, may have your influence in them. There’s one. I’m looking at a few of them. First-time Mom? Sande Leman: First-time Mom. SCOTT ROSS: Is that you? Moving right along. Sex Begins in the Kitchen? We’ll just keep moving. Sande Leman: That’s not me. No, I’m sure that wasn’t written with me in mind. No. SCOTT ROSS: Women Who Try Too Hard, Making Sense of the Man in your Life. Sande Leman: Good luck with that one. Yes. We’re all still trying to do that. SCOTT ROSS: This guy has really given away family secrets all over the world. You’ve been married how long? Sande Leman: We’ve been married 41 years this August. SCOTT ROSS: How have you done it? Sande Leman: All in a row. How have I done it? You know what? I think we’ve really had fun together. I think there are a few elements of marriage that hold you together, and I think number one is like trusting each other, which is so important. And we just have a great sense of humor. And he’s the baby. He’s the light one; I’m the first-born that keeps him pretty. I did not pick out this outfit today, as you might guess. SCOTT ROSS: I heard a story off camera. Sande Leman: Oh, I bet it wasn’t true. Or maybe it was. SCOTT ROSS: Yes. Where did you meet? Sande Leman: We met in the men’s room at a hospital. SCOTT ROSS: May I ask? Sande Leman: I was a nurse’s aide. He was a janitor. SCOTT ROSS: You have how many children? Sande Leman: We have five great kids. Kevin Leman: We have that many? Sande Leman: Five great kids. Yes. SCOTT ROSS: What is the glue that’s held you together? Sande Leman: I think that we truly care for each other. We truly love each other. I think being a Christian family, having God sort of at the center. Every couple has their own way of working out issues, but no, so I’ve gone to bed so many times mad. But anyway. SCOTT ROSS: Are you surprised . . . . ? Kevin Leman: When do I get to talk again? SCOTT ROSS: You don’t. This is not your interview. Are you surprised by his success? Sande Leman: No. He works very hard at what he does. And he just has, what you see, he’s just genuine. I think people really like that. There are no falsehoods. No, he’s not a parent and a husband here, and then somebody else here at home. So I think people relate to that. He’s very cushy and fun to talk to, and he’s just who he is. SCOTT ROSS: How do you plan on spending your latter years together? Sande Leman: Uh oh. Are we in our latter years? SCOTT ROSS: No. Sande Leman: Well, we’ll still have a daughter in her 20s when we’re in our 80s. We’re never really going to have a chance to sit on our rocking chairs, which I think is great. Kevin Leman: But I do want to say this. Can I say this? SCOTT ROSS: Yes. We’ll allow you this. Kevin Leman: Well, it’s about our sex life. SCOTT ROSS: Oh. Sande Leman: Oh, no. Then you can’t. Kevin Leman: I’m just here to tell you that you do slow down. And we’ve slowed down to about, oh, four times a week now. And it just takes its toll. SCOTT ROSS: I can see it has on you, Kevin. Thank you. Kevin Leman: So we’re just a couple of old people who some day are probably going to be caught trying to have sex on our walkers. That would be my dream. Sande Leman: Well, he might be trying to be caught. Not me! SCOTT ROSS: Thank you for allowing us to live with the Lemans for just a short time. Thanks. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KRISTI WATTS: Talk about how to respond. How to respond to having sex with a walker? I was like, “What do you say?” Okay. Okay. What am I supposed to do now? GORDON ROBERTSON: Up next . . . . KRISTI WATTS: Thank you. GORDON ROBERTSON: That seems to be our transition for the whole show. But when it happened to him he wasn’t worried, because he had a plan that got his family through six months without a paycheck. PETER AND CHRISTINA SCHEURMAN ANDREW KNOX: In May of 1999, Peter Scheurman lost his computer engineering job and his family’s only source of income. His wife had left her job earlier that year to be a stay-at-home mom for the couple’s young sons. Peter Scheurman: The expectation was within two to four weeks I’d be hired again with another employer. Unfortunately, that went on for almost six months. ANDREW KNOX: Expensive health insurance and unexpected car repairs made his small unemployment checks dwindle fast. Despite the tight budget, the Scheurmans continued to tithe. They gave a portion of their income to their church. Peter Scheurman: Any money coming in, whether it was a gift, unemployment, and then eventually work, we always tithed. We always gave God His ten percent. ANDREW KNOX: For six months, they lived on their savings and stayed out of debt. Christina Scheurman: I never believed in credit card debt. But it was a road of trust. You really had to trust and know. I knew what God had done for us in the past, and I knew what He would do in the future, because He never changes. And so that’s what I just had to hold on to. ANDREW KNOX: Then, Peter landed a job with Microsoft. Around that time, the Scheurmans saw a story about CBN’s water well project. Peter Scheurman: That motivated us to give to CBN, because I want to fund these wells. I want to get this water out and get the Word of God out. Christina Scheurman: Not only physical water, but in a sense it’s spiritual water as well. ANDREW KNOX: As their income increases each year, so does their giving. Christina Scheurman: We can never out give God. Whenever we give something, God always gives us back. Peter Scheurman: One of the financial blessings is that back in 2005 we were able to pay off our house here completely and be debt free. Christina Scheurman: If people are just faithful to what God asks them to do, God will provide for them completely and totally. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Wow, what a great story. It’s not a get rich quick scheme. It’s not some sort of instant thing. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM But if you’re faithful, then God is faithful. And it’s the only thing that we’re ever allowed to test Him in. We’re allowed to test Him in our tithes and offerings. And when we do that, when we honor Him with our first fruits—imagine being on unemployment checks and saying, “I still need to honor God with whatever the increase is, whether it’s a gift. Whatever the increase is, I still need to honor God first.” And God responded. He will do that to you if you just say, “Okay, I’ll take an adventure in giving.” If you want to do that, all you have to do is call us: 1-800-759-0700. And say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club.” How much is that? Well, it’s just 20 dollars a month, 65 cents a day. Some of you say, “I can give more. I can give at 700 Club Gold,” which is 40 dollars a month. We also have 1000 Club, which is 84 dollars a month, and that translates into 1,000 dollars a year. We have some really good, juicy e-mail that we’re ready to jump into. You ready, Gordon? GORDON ROBERTSON: I’ve never heard it called “juicy” before. KRISTI WATTS: Juicy. Absolutely. You know, got a little bit of something on it. GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. KRISTI WATTS: Here we go. Kimberly writes in and says, “I’ve been praying for my eyes to be healed on my own and also with others. I have not yet seen a change, but I do believe that miracles can happen. What can I do to strengthen my prayer to make sure it’s heard?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Kimberly, just number one, you’ve got to get over the whole concept that you need to strengthen your prayer. I find that actually inhibits things, because you’re getting into questions, “What am I doing wrong? Do I have enough faith? Is my faith strong enough? Have I confessed enough? Have I forgiven enough? Have I done it right?” Because all of that puts it on you, and you need to turn it around. When a little child is crying in a crib, are they worried about how they’re crying and what they’re asking for and what they’re asking their parents for and the method? No. No. They have every confidence that their cries are heard and that mom or dad are going to come quickly. And you need to have that same confidence in your Heavenly Father. And when you have that, then you automatically know you’re praying in accordance with His will. Get that set. The apostle John wrote in his letters, “When you know you’re praying in accordance with God’s will, then you know you’re heard.” Now, get it set that healing is God’s will. The psalmist said, “He heals all our diseases.” So that ought to be plenty of evidence it’s in His will to heal your eyes. Then follow what Jesus said, “Believe that you’ve already received. When you stand praying, believe that you’ve already received.” Believe that you’ve already received. So often we stand praying, and we still think it’s some far off thing, that it’s some strange thing, that we need more faith. We need more of this. No. No. Believe that you’ve already received. And if you have trouble believing, the Bible encourages, “Look to Jesus, the author and the finisher of your faith.” When I stopped looking for faith and start looking to Jesus, then I found all the faith I needed, because no longer was I worried about do I have enough, I suddenly realized He had plenty. And He was willing to give it all to me. And so no longer was I on some kind of faith level, but I knew some great facts. I knew the great fact that He came, that He died just for me, that He wanted to forgive me, cleanse me, heal me, do all kinds of wonderful things for me. And then not only did He die, He rose again. And right now He’s seated at the right hand of the Father interceding. That means He’s praying for you. He ever lives to give intercession for the saints. So right now, He’s praying for you. Well, if you’ve got all that going for you, well, then, okay, you’ve got plenty. Take all of that into prayer. And I love the model prayer that Jesus gave us, “Thy Kingdom come. Our Father, which art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name.” Start with that. He’s Daddy. He’s in Heaven. He’s holy. “Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth.” And just pray that in your eyes, “Thy Kingdom come to my eyes. Your will be done in my eyes. You made my eyes to see and to see clearly.” And if you follow those steps, you’ll get what you need. KRISTI WATTS: Hmm. That was awesome. GORDON ROBERTSON: Hmm. KRISTI WATTS: No, I was just sitting here thinking. No, that was really, really good, because as you were talking, I was thinking about how at different times, points, in my life where I’ve prayed for something and maybe hadn’t seen the manifestation of it as quickly as I would like. And I start thinking about how the Lord started to have me focus on what He was teaching me through that journey. Like, for instance, if I’m praying for a financial blessing, and I’m like, “Lord, okay, I need this amount of money. I need you to send that.” The Lord started to talk to me and say, “Quit focusing on that and start to see the different steps of how I’m blessing you. And see what I’m doing day by day.” So that’s also part of the process. So rather than just focusing on what you’re not getting. Do you know what I mean? GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, it’s very easy for us, particularly when you’re praying for healing, to focus on your symptoms. KRISTI WATTS: Sure. GORDON ROBERTSON: And as soon as you do that, you’ve got your eyes off Jesus. And realize what happened to Peter, he’s walking on the water. And he starts to focus on the wind and the waves. When he got out of the boat, there was plenty of wind and waves. The Bible is very clear. The storm was already there. And so when he was focused on Jesus and Jesus commanding him to come, “Lord, if you command me, I’ll come.” And when he focused on that, he could do it. But when he focused on the wind and the waves, then he couldn’t do it anymore. It’s all about what you’re thinking about. And if you think that you’re receiving, then you have it. KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. Okay, this question, this next one is very interesting. This is the one I was calling juicy. Rhonda writes in . . . . GORDON ROBERTSON: This one is juicy. All right. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. And she says, “In the past, I asked the devil to be near me. It seems like something still gets close to me every so often, and it’s like some kind of hypnotic state. I hate this, and I want it to stop. I prayed and cried, because I don’t want this anymore. What do you think I should do?” GORDON ROBERTSON: What do you think, Kristi? KRISTI WATTS: Well, you know what? God has given us a power. If you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, if you’re filled with the Holy Ghost, then you’ve got the power to say, “What’s bound in Heaven is bound on earth. I come against you right now in the name of Jesus. Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit.” And yes. GORDON ROBERTSON: Take authority. KRISTI WATTS: Take authority. GORDON ROBERTSON: Take authority. KRISTI WATTS: Take authority. GORDON ROBERTSON: And command it. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. GORDON ROBERTSON: We have tremendous authority to bind. Whatever you bind on earth would be bound in Heaven. Bind. And Jesus says you can bind the strong man. Jesus says in Luke 10, “You have all the power over anything with the enemy. Nothing can hurt you. Nothing can hurt you. You can tread on serpents and scorpions.” He’s not talking about animals. He’s talking about spirits. And you have the authority to do that. Take it. The devil, boy, he’s the hypnotizer. He’s the hallucinator. He’s the illusionist. He wants to bluff you. He wants to tell you, “Well, you asked me, and therefore I’m here. You’ve given me permission.” You say, “Back. I revoke that now. You don’t have permission anymore. In the name of Jesus, leave.” And you will see him leave. Resist the devil, and he will flee. KRISTI WATTS: And he will flee. Come on. All right. Scott writes in and says, “I started watching your show . . . .” GORDON ROBERTSON: We’re having revival. KRISTI WATTS: I know, right. “I started watching your show recently. I’m 15 years old and have all the typical high school pressures. As of April, I have been having this terrible atheistic thoughts. I’m a strong believer, but these thoughts have stolen my peace of mind. Do you have any advice on what to do when these thoughts occur?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Scott, I would encourage you to start reading some of the Christian apologists. I’ve never been able to argue somebody into Heaven. You always have to demonstrate the power of God to really convince and unbeliever that God exists and He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. But for Christians, particularly if you’re being exposed to thoughts that are contrary to the Bible, go read some of the Christian apologists. I recommend Ravi Zacharias. He’s really good for modern day. Then there are plenty of them. Once you do a Google search on that, you’ll find a whole bunch. And there are plenty of arguments that counter all the arguments of the world to try to say there is no God. And you’ll find plenty of evidence. All you have to do is look around you. We leave you with these words from Jesus from John 15, . . . . GRAPHIC: John 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (NKJV) . . . . “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” GRAPHIC: COPYRIGHT 2009 CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING NETWORK * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEXT DAY PROMO GRAPHIC: BASIC TRAINING GORDON ROBERTSON: Tomorrow.
