The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Monday, August 17, 2009 GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. The White House may be ready to make a major concession in the health care bill. The administration says it’s willing to drop the idea of a government insurance plan. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But some Democrats are already objecting to that idea. John Jessup has this look at the debate. CARE JOHN JESSUP: After weeks of heated town hall meetings, . . . . Man: Tell me that this health care bill is not going to cost me more money! JOHN JESSUP: . . . . the White House may be turning the page on one of the most contentious issues: a government-run insurance alternative. Republicans and many Americans give the idea two thumbs down. Dan Ellegood: We're in deep trouble, and the country can't afford what it's doing now. So why don't we work on fixing Medicare, Medicaid, social security? JOHN JESSUP: The Obama Administration now appears to be backing off. On the Sunday talk show circuit, the President’s Health and Human Services secretary said the public option is, quote, “not the essential element" to health care reform.” Instead, the White House is open to the idea of consumer-owned non-profit co-ops that would compete directly with private companies, a strategic shift that could end the stalemate in Congress. GRAPHIC: FOX NEWS SUNDAY Sen. Kent Conrad ([D] North Dakota): Look, the fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for the public option. There never have been so to continue to chase that rabbit I think is just a wasted effort. GRPAHIC: FOX NEWS SUNDAY Sen. Richard Shelby ([R] Alabama); It would be, I believe, a step in the right direction, away from a government takeover of our health care in this country. JOHN JESSUP: But dropping the government plan would be a tough pill to swallow. The public option is popular among liberal Democrats who want to overhaul health care and extend coverage to nearly 50 million people who don’t have it. Jill Cross: I just can't believe that conservatives think it's ok to leave out the people who can't afford health care that we have. JOHN JESSUP: Already, one House Democrat said health care legislation without the public option would be a potential deal-breaker for the Democratic caucus. But a new polls finds that 54 percent of Americans say no health care reform this year would be better than Congress passing the current bill. The Rasmussen Report went on to say it doesn’t necessarily mean voters are opposed to the idea of health care reform. They are just concerned about some of the specific proposals in the House plan. The shift away from the public option may mean critics can check off one of those concerns, but it is unlikely to push them any closer to supporting the President's plan overall. John Jessup, CBN News, Washington. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, we’re already hearing some pushback. Howard Dean has already said today that he can’t imagine a health care bill without a public option. But as we look at this, I think we ought to be looking at what’s going on around the world. And just today the incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association, and they’ve got a public health system, this is what they say, quote, “We all agree that the system is imploding. We all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize. We know that there must be change. We’re running flat out. We’re just trying to stay head of the immediate day-to-day demands.” And that was in response to what’s being called “waiting list,” which means if you have a medical problem in Canada, you are on a waiting list for care. Do we really want that here? Wendy Griffith has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Wendy. STIMULUS POLL; MARKETS WENDY GRIFFITH: Gordon, President Obama said that the economy needed the 787 billion dollar stimulus bill to bring the country out of a severe recession. But now, a majority of economists say the downturn is ending, even though only a little of the stimulus money has been spent. A new Gallup poll finds that most Americans don’t think the stimulus bill helped. Fifty-seven percent say it had no impact on the economy or made it worse. And 60 percent doubt it will help the economy in the years ahead. Meanwhile, the stock market may be headed for its first serious correction in more than a month, after world markets dropped sharply today. CHICAGO CLOSED WENDY GRIFFITH: The city of Chicago has an unusual idea for dealing with its budget problems: just shut down the city. Like many other governments around the country, Chicago is dealing with its own budget crisis. So officials decided the city would take three days off, including today. Richard Daley (Chicago Mayor): I believe it would have an enormous impact upon America. In other words, you are telling the taxpayers that everybody is suffering. You’re suffering. Man: It’s a much better alternative than people being laid off. WENDY GRIFFITH: Officials estimate the move will save over eight million dollars. SUMMER STORMS WENDY GRIFFITH: Tropical Storm Claudette hit the Florida panhandle early this morning. It’s the first tropical storm to hit the US mainland this year. And there has been nearly ten inches of rainfall with that storm. But Claudette is expected to weaken as it moves over land. Max Mayfield (Fmr. Dir. National Hurricane Ctr.): It just takes that one hurricane over your community to make for a bad year. Benina Regino (Shopper): I’m kind of used to it, but all you can do is prepare yourself for the worst. Joe Bastardi (AccuWeather Meteorologist): The Gulf is more primed than usual for intensification this year, and that's what Claudette is showing us. WENDY GRIFFITH: Now, forecasters are keeping an eye on Hurricane Bill. He’s developing over the Atlantic. It’s been 17 years since the first named storm arrived this late in the hurricane season. That was the deadly category five Hurricane Andrew. ATHEIST BUS ADS WENDY GRIFFITH: A free speech debate in Iowa over allowing atheist ads on city buses. The ads say, “Don’t believe in God? You’re not alone.” The Des Moines Bus Agency originally stripped the ads off the buses, saying they don’t allow the word “God” to be on a public bus. But the ads were recently put back on the buses after city officials met with the atheist group sponsoring the ads. The campaign is part of a bigger national push by the Washington, DC, based United Coalition for Reason. The group has already placed ads on buses and billboards across the country, including Dallas, Phoenix and Philadelphia. KHMER WENDY GRIFFITH: Kaing Eav was the former head of a torture center for the notorious Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge murdered thousands of people under his command in the late 1970s in Cambodia. But then, his life changed radically. Gary Lane has the story of the man nicknamed “Deuch.” GARY LANE: This is the face of the one of the Khmer Rouge’s most ruthless killers. Deuch commanded the notorious Tuol Sleng Prison for three years. More than 12,000 men, women and children perished here, many after prolonged torture. Deuch's signature is on many of the death orders. Nic Dunlop (Author, “The Lost Executioner”): He has the key to unlock the secrets of the Khmer Rouge, which was a highly secretive organization. And still to this day nobody is completely certain how the orders for the killings were carried out, who gave them, how they were transmitted and how they were interpreted. GARY LANE: Cambodians believe Deuch is a crucial link if the truth about the past is to be revealed. He's the only one of the five former Khmer Rouge leaders on trial who has admitted to his crimes. His testimony could convict those who ordered the killings, and bring justice for their victims. Nic Dunlop: He has the ability to shed light on vast areas that have been in the darkness for scholars and journalists and historians for decades. GARY LANE: Christians say he may also help his nation understand true forgiveness. In 1993, while in hiding and living under an assumed identity, Deuch became a Christian. Christopher Lapel, a Cambodian-American pastor, helped lead him to Christ. Christopher Lapel (Cambodian-American Pastor): He came to me and said, “Well, Pastor Christopher, I'm a sinner, and I don't think my brothers and sisters around me can forgive me, because my sins are so deep.” GARY LANE: Today, Deuch acknowledges that he committed horrendous acts and has apologized for the killings. Last year he went back to the prison where so many suffered at his hands. Reach Sambath (Tribunal Media Officer): He came here. He asked permission to pray to those victims who died as well. And we could see that his eyes were very emotional. GARY LANE: Deuch knows he must pay for his crimes, and he's ready to tell all at the trial. He says, “They can have my body. Jesus has my soul.” Christopher Lapel: He's very strong in faith, and he's ready to testify. And he would like to tell the truth, the whole truth, for what he done to his people. GARY LANE: Deuch's story is not unusual. Many former Khmer Rouge soldiers have come to Christ in recent years. Pailin, in the northwest, used to be a Khmer Rouge stronghold. Now there are several Christian churches in the region. Here, former Khmer Rouge soldiers are following Christ. And what about the victims of the genocide? Some 0of them are also choosing the path of forgiveness. San Than Keo (Cambodian Christian): I was having a lot of anger towards the Pol Pot regime and those who committed crimes during those times. But as soon as I accepted the Lord, and after I learned from the Word of God, the Lord has enabled me to forgive and forget and go on with life. GARY LANE: San Than Keo was eight years old when the Khmer Rouge forced his family of 12 from their rural village home. Keo later learned his mother and father were murdered, and seven of his brothers and sisters were also killed. He says he spent many nights weeping until a music teacher led him to Christ in 1990. Now he sings as he travels along a divine road to forgiveness. His pastor prays other Cambodians will join him. Setan Lee (Cambodian Pastor): Only through the power of God, the power of forgiveness can help us and enable us to forgive. My hope for the future is that we will turn this land of the killing fields into the living fields. GARY LANE: Gary Lane, CBN News. WENDY GRIFFITH: A powerful story of God’s forgiveness, Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: Many good things are happening in Cambodia. Our surveys are showing that people are coming to Christ in numbers. What used to be considered a very resistant mission field is now wide open. And they’re receiving the whole Gospel, and part of that means forgiving those who have harmed you. And some of the horrors of the killing fields have been—I’ve seen pictures of former Khmer Rouge torturers literally hugging the families that they persecuted and tortured. So it’s incredible what can happen when the Gospel takes over. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. There is a great release that comes with forgiveness. A powerful story. Well, coming up, meet a family that built a mom and pop store into a billion dollar business. Man: For him, it was always a ministry. He couldn’t be a preacher, and Grandma wanted six preachers. But that wasn’t his calling, so he had to where his gifting was. And he loved the retail business. TERRY MEEUWSEN: We’ll tell you their business secrets when we return. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SYNVISC Announcer: Introducing Synvisc One, a new way to treat osteoarthritis knee pain right at the source and help you get back to doing the things you love. Two sides of an armed robbery. Man: The guys went in the bank, and quick money running out. GORDON ROBERTSON: The criminal . . . . Man: With those thoughts in mind, I robbed a bank. GORDON ROBERTSON: . . . . the victim . . . . Man: The first thing he did was he ordered everybody to hit the floor. GORDON ROBERTSON: And what happened the next time they met. * * * GRAPHIC: CASSI DAVIS GORDON ROBERTSON: Plus . . . . Woman: Those are material things. They can be replaced. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, most companies want to make money, but one family has another goal in mind for their businesses: giving money away. Mark Martin has this report on the remarkable impact of their gifts. FOCUS: INTERVIEW WITH MART GREEN MARK MARTIN: Today, Hobby Lobby is a thriving arts and crafts retail chain, with 432 stores in 34 states. But that most definitely wasn't the case back in the early 70s. David Green and his family started Hobby Lobby in their living room, with just 600 dollars. His son Mart recalls David’s outlook on business. Mart Green (CEO, Mardel Christian & Education Stores): For him, it was always a ministry. He couldn't be a preacher, and Grandma wanted six preachers. And he wished he could have been a preacher, but that wasn't his calling. And so he had to go where his gifting was, and he just loved the retail business. It was a way for them to have a business that they could minister, and that was through giving. So my dad's ministry was giving, not preaching. MARK MARTIN: Mart was nine years old when his dad started Hobby Lobby, but even at that young age, he was learning what it meant to be a businessman. Mart Green: So my dad paid me seven cents to glue frames. My brother was seven, and he was gluing frames. And so being the older brother, I wanted to glue faster and more, so I could buy more baseball cards. MARK MARTIN: He couldn't escape the Biblical principles upheld by his dad. Mart Green: I always knew that Hobby Lobby was what I call a “back-door ministry.” In other words, if we sell enough product, we do well, we can give. MARK MARTIN: Mart followed in the footsteps of his father, taking the reins of his own company when he was only 19 years old, after his dad approached him about Christian bookstores. (Interviewing): At age 19, most teenagers are just thinking about, “Hey, what am I going to do with my life?” And you’re establishing Mardel Christian Stores. How did that all come about? Mart Green: I thought, “Oh, man, that would really be great, because it could be a “front door ministry.” Everybody comes to a Christian bookstore. At 19, I wasn't smart enough not to do it. And so, I quit school, came back home. My dad helped me get a loan, and away I went. MARK MARTIN (Reporting): And he's not kidding. Currently, there are 32 Mardel Christian stores across six states. Like his dad, Mart's faith in Jesus Christ motivates and sustains him. Mart Green: If I can apply God's Word to my life and my situations, then I feel like Christ will be with me, and He has been. MARK MARTIN: One of the ways the Greens have applied God's Word in their lives is through tithing, setting aside at least ten percent of their income for the Lord. Mart's grandmother, Marie, set a diligent example, even in the face of poverty. Mart Green: She paid tithes when you gave her a gift. That widow's mite is what impacted my dad, so when my dad was in business, even when the business was very small, was barely making any money, he tithed. And so his principle was if you don't tithe when it's small, you're not going to tithe when it gets larger. Just like my dad always taught us that nine was greater than ten, and we all love math. We're like, “No.” And he was talking about tithing, of course. He says, “Mart, you can do more with the 90 cents than you can with the dollar.” Okay. Well, you can't explain that on paper. There has to be a faith element. So mixing integrity and faith together is what we're trying to do, both as a husband, a father, as well as in the business community. MARK MARTIN: And Mart says tithing is just a starting point for this family of givers. Mixing integrity and faith has really paid off. David Green made Forbes' list of the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth of 1.7 billion dollars. And that bounty is being used to abundantly bless others. Mart Green: We definitely believe in that principle of planting our seed, taking the seed that we have, what God has given us. He didn't give us that seed to just carry around with us. It's to plant that seed. So our giving has been directed by the Lord. MARK MARTIN: The Greens believe God directed them to use the money He provide to help Oral Roberts University, with its mission to send Christian graduates into all the world. The debt-laden school was in danger of closing its doors. (Interviewing): You’ve given millions of dollars to the university. I know as an ORU alumnus, I’m extremely grateful for the gifts that you have given to ORU. But yet, you had no direct connection with ORU prior to all of this. Why? Mart Green: My father, he was just reading the paper, and he just started grieving over 3,000 students, because when you were reading the paper, the news was getting pretty dire. And like, “What if ORU wasn't there next year?” And so my dad just lost sleep over that. Again, we just said, “Lord, we're willing, and if you want us to give,” and it's been an incredible journey over these last 18 months. MARK MARTIN (Reporting): In a little over a year and a half, ORU'S debt miraculously has dropped from 55 million dollars to just under 720,000 dollars, because of donations from the Green family as well as alumni and friends of ORU. Altogether, the Greens have given to the university more than 80 million dollars. Set foot on the campus, and you'll see all kinds of positive, tangible changes. Founder Oral Roberts has given the new ORU, with its capital improvements and governing changes, his blessing. Mart Green: We don't give to get back, but God increases us back, and we get a chance to plant more seed, to bless more people. At ORU obviously, it's not about buildings. It's not about debt. We didn't give to debt—that’s what it went for; we gave to young people's lives, who could go out and change the world for the Lord, for Jesus Christ. MARK MARTIN: Mark Martin, CBN News. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: What an incredible story of David and Mart Green and how God moved upon them and their family. I just love the illustration: nine is greater than ten. We all know math. And from the world’s point of view, ten is always greater than nine. But in God’s point of view, nine is always greater than ten, because what it means is that you’re trusting Him, that you’re believing in Him, that you’re having faith for increase. You’re having faith that He will open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing you cannot contain. Now, look at Mart’s grandmother. Here is a woman, she’s not rich. And she’s actually tithing from gifts. People would give her things in her poverty, and she would take a tenth of that and give it back to the Lord. Now, did she see the result? No, but she taught a son. And he saw the result. He saw 1.7 billion, and he saw enough that he was able to rescue one of the leading charismatic universities in the world. That is how God works. And nine is always greater than ten. I just encourage you, starting thinking that way and start living that way. I know we’re in difficult economic times, but now is the time to prove God and to prove Him with tithes, with offerings over and above the tithe, and prove Him now in this and see if He won’t open the windows of Heaven on you, and your children and your grandchildren. It can happen. If it happened to the Greens, it can happen to you, because God is faithful. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, up next, a tale of crime, gang life and a Chevy Impala. Man: I had put some 22-inch rims on it. I had TVs in it. Everything that I put my whole life into was being flashy. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The lesson this thug learned from his car, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2A: SIMPLEX Announcer: Attention. And then one day, it was gone. TONY GASKINS ANDREW KNOX: Gangs, drugs and crime. In many low-income neighborhoods, these vices are a way of life. For Tony Gaskins, Jr., this lifestyle was rebellion against what he knew was right. Tony Gaskins: I was a Christian. I was raised a Christian. I knew where I was supposed to be. I knew where I was supposed to be going with God in a sense that I wanted to end up living right and doing the right things, but I began trying to do what I saw the big guys around the neighborhood doing, selling drugs and stealing and things like that. ANDREW KNOX: The money and respect was attractive to Tony, but he knew better. Not only was he a Christian, he was the son of a minister. Tony Gaskins: I went from being a church boy to being a thug, trying to declare my manhood like so many young men do. You look up to the drug dealers or the guys with the money or the cool guys, the guys who all the girls want. So from the age of 18 to 23, I was just in a backslidden state, fornicating, stealing, robbing, selling drugs. ANDREW KNOX: Tony kept ignoring God, and his drug dealing reached an all-time high. Then his car was stolen. Tony Gaskins: I had an Impala, a 2005 Impala. I had put some 22-inch rims on it. I had TVs in it. Everything that I put my whole life into, my whole heart into, was being flashy, trying to look successful, but being empty on the inside. Having no real peace, no real happiness, but to the world, looks like, “Man, he’s made it.” And that all came through my car. But God wasn’t in it. And when I lost that, it was like that was the last straw. ANDREW KNOX: Tony’s identity had been stripped away along with his car, and now he had a choice to make. Tony Gaskins: I saw that being in the world and living for the devil and do the things that he will have you doing, the sin and the lying, the cheating, the beating, the drugs, and all of that, there’s no security. There are no promises. There are no rules to his game. The devil, he will build you up, and then he’ll snatch you down. And I said, you know what, God? It’s not worth it. I’m done. It’s not worth living this lifestyle.” I said, “I vow from this day forward that I will live for you. I’ll let my people know that the only thing that matters in life is our service for you.” I told God that I’ll allow my story to bring Him glory. I told Him, “Lord, I’ll take my pain to give you praise.” And I traded out that day. I was devastated, that your life turned upside down. You have nothing at that moment. But I said, “God, I’m not going to try to trick you. I’m not going to try to pimp you. I’m not going to pray for strength and pray for healing, and then a week later go back to the streets. I’m done forever, because I know my calling.” I know what I was supposed to be doing. I knew this since I was a child. So I was like the prodigal son. But God, He took, and He brought me back in. ANDREW KNOX: Today, Tony lives in Florida with his wife and young son. Tony Gaskins: God showed me that, “You’re put here for My glory. You’re put here for service.” I want to be just like Christ. And when you strive for that, it puts you on a whole other level. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON MINISTERS SALVATION GORDON ROBERTSON: You can be a whole other level, too. And you can trade out. Imagine this trade: all your pain, all your guilt, all your shame. Trade it all. You can get rid of it all. And God in turn freely will give you peace and love and joy. And then you get the greatest privilege of all. You get to call him Daddy. We get to say Abba Father. That is a trade worth making. And it’s such an incredible trade. God says to you, “I’ve put before you life and death. Choose life.” Choose life. And He’s wondering why in the world would we choose death. Why in the world would we choose something that we know leads to destruction, we know doesn’t fulfill? If you’re listening right now, and you’re living just as Tony lived, and maybe you’re like him, you’re a thug, but you know down deep in your heart you’re not a thug, and you’re looking for a way out, well, Jesus is offering you that way out now. And it’s not something where you give up anything. It’s where you get everything. And Tony’s prayer, “God, I’m not here to trick you.” Well, look at what you’re doing and who are you really tricking? Who are you really fooling? Have a moment where you just look in the mirror and realize the only person you’re fooling is yourself. The only person you’re cheating is yourself. And just as Tony said, the only person you’re pimping is yourself. Come home today. Come back to God. Let Him clean you. Let Him restore you. Let Him give you joy. Let Him sing songs of deliverance over you. And whatever is enslaving you, whatever has you in chains, He’ll take all that off. He’ll make you new again. And just as the prodigal son, He’ll put a nice robe around you, put the ring on your finger. And He’ll have a great celebration, “Look, the son that I thought was lost is now home.” He’ll do all of that for you, and He’ll do it freely. And He’ll make a place for you, not as a servant, but as a child of God, as His daughter, as His son, as an honored member of His household. He will do that for you. Now, if this is for you, just bow your head with me. Pray a very simple prayer, and let God do all the rest for you. What He’s done for others, what He did for Tony, what He did for me, He will do for you, He’ll do for you. All you have to do is ask. Bow your head. “Lord Jesus.” That’s right. Say it out loud. “Lord Jesus, I’ve seen what you’ve done for others, and I want that for me. I want to be free. I want to live free. I want joy. I want peace. So Jesus, right now, I open my heart to you, and I ask that you come in, that you make me new, that you forgive me, that you cleanse me. And Jesus, right now, I just want to trade all my pain, all my sorrow, all my shame, I want to trade it all for you. Hear my prayer. Come into my heart, for I ask it in Jesus’ name.” Father, for those who just prayed, I pray a baptism in your love. I pray your peace just wash over them and that all guilt and all shame be taken away now, that all their sins be forgiven now, in Jesus’ name. Amen. If you just prayed with me, the Bible says that if you will believe in your heart and then confess with your mouth, you shall be saved. For decades, doctors used to warn women against lifting weights or even heavy objects. They said it could cause painful arm swelling called lymphedema. But new research shows weight training actually helps prevent this problem. The study was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. More than 2.5 million Americans are breast cancer survivors. And doctors say exercise could mean a big difference in their quality of life. GIVING UP HIS JOB WENDY GRIFFITH: Well, the Bible teaches to put others before yourself, and that’s exactly what one North Carolina teacher did for his coworker. Long time teacher Jim Bell sacrificed his own job for the sake of a fellow teacher. Bell taught social studies to thousands of kids throughout the years at Owen Middle School. He intended to continue a few more years before retiring. But budget cuts and the prospect of three teachers losing their jobs forced him to make a tough decision. Jim Bell (Retired Teacher): It's time for me to get out. If one of them got kicked out, they may not ever go back into the school business. Holly Henderson (Teacher): He's just such a good man, and I know he saw me in tears that day, and I know he was put in a tough spot. WENDY GRIFFITH: Bell says he resigned to make room for new, younger teachers. He hopes they'll touch as many lives as he has. What a guy. Instead, they found themselves in debt and looking for work. That’s when they decided to help people who were even worse off than they were. It was a choice that changed their lives. ANDREW AND LEAH MACABINTA DORY NISSEN: The Macabinta household is a busy place, typical when you’re raising three kids. Andrew came to America from the Philippines and is a computer equipment maintenance manager. His wife Leah is a data technician. They can afford a lovely home in a quiet neighborhood in pricey San Jose California. But several years ago, the mention of money always sparked an argument. Andrew Macabinta: Even though we were making a lot of money, we were still falling short. So the only answer I could give her is, “Well, I’m going to have to work more hours then.” She keeps telling me, “No, it’s going to be fine as long as we believe in God.” And at that time, I’m like, “Always God! God. But I’ve been breaking my back for all of us.” DORY NISSEN: Then the Macabinta’s suffered a huge financial blow. Leah was laid off. She started looking for a new job right away, but no one was hiring. Leah Macabinta: There was a big question in my mind, that, “Where will I get the resources to continue on paying for the bills?” DORY NISSEN: Andrew began taking time from his hectic schedule to read his Bible and ask God for a solution. One day, he saw a story about how Operation Blessing helped an extremely poor family in the Philippines. Andrew Macabinta: When I was in the Philippines, I never saw these people, because I lived in the city at that time. So that’s when I decided that we are a little bit better off compared to other people. Twenty dollars a month is not a big one for me, but it’s a big deal for other people. DORY NISSEN: Andrew called and joined The 700 Club. Three days later, Leah was offered a new job. Leah Macabinta: To be able to remove half of the burden that Andrew had on his shoulders, it will be easier for him, knowing I have a job and he has a job, that everything will go smoothly. DORY NISSEN: The Macabintas took a new approach to their finances. They increased their giving and moved up to The 1000 Club, and they got smart about spending their money. Andrew Macabinta: We were living better, and I started to notice it. We’re not arguing anymore. We never talk about finances falling short. DORY NISSEN: The Macabintas believe God is blessing them because they continue to give. Andrew Macabinta: I would encourage everybody to join The 700 Club. God will touch you more, especially financially. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, maybe you’re like Andrew. You’ve been working hard. You’ve been breaking your back. And you’ve been wondering, “Where are the blessings?” It’s like so many couples in America, you’re dependent on two incomes in order to make it. And if you lose one of them, then you’re in trouble. And just like Andrew and Leah, they got into trouble, because Leah lost her job. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM God is able. And that story ought to underline for you how much He is able. He is able to open windows in Heaven and pour out blessings you cannot contain. So if you want to take that step, it’s a risk. Faith is always spelled risk, r-i-s-k. And when you take it, and you say, “Okay, I’m going to trust God. I’m going to trust God with money.” And when you start talking about ten percent and you’re talking about real money, “I’m going to trust God with real money, not just a tip. I’m going to trust Him with real money,” then He comes through. Then He says, “Okay, you believe Me. You believe that I can increase. You believe that I can provide a way where there seems to be no way. You believe that I can provide streams in the desert for you.” So if you want to take that step, give us a call: 1-800-759-0700. Just say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club.” How much is that? It’s just 20 dollars a month, 65 cents a day. Some of you say, “I can give more. I can give 700 Club Gold.” That’s 40 dollars a month. Terry. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BRING IT ON GORDON ROBERTSON: I think we’ve got some e-mail, don’t we? TERRY MEEUWSEN: We do. This is Monday, and we’ve got some Money Monday questions for you. This is from Lynne, who says, “I recently inherited 100,000 dollars in the form of an annuity. Are annuities protected by the FDIC? And can annuities be moved? If so, do you think there is a safer vehicle to put this money into considering recent financial crisis?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Lynne, annuities are not protected by the FDIC, but I would encourage you not to change it. Annuities in years gone by were always consider lesser investments. They were specifically designed as vehicles by insurance companies, and the deal was they could pretty much guarantee that they were going to get a greater rate of return than they were going to pay out to the beneficiary. But they were chosen in order to protect beneficiaries who didn’t have financial expertise, and it was really a specific vehicle for investments for minors, that if something were to happen to the parents, the children would be able to have a regular, steady income. But in these financial times, that kind of steady income is wonderful. Now, there are some tax implications to it. You may want to see an accountant to sort of iron all that out. But the current wisdom in the current economic crisis is annuities are actually a pretty good deal if you have one. I’m not saying get in one, but I’m definitely saying don’t get out of it if you’ve got it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is from Sheila, who says, “I recently left my job to be able to spend time at home caring for our children. My husband is getting really anxious and stressed that we may not be able to pay our bills. I’m stressing, too. I thought God was leading me to do this, but how can I be sure when it seems to be failing already? Is it worth living bare bones so I can stay with the children?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Sheila, I always think it’s worthwhile to stay with your kids. I think that’s a good thing if you can do it. Now, the issue, God was leading you, and now you’re into a time of stress and anxiety. One of the things about stress and anxiety is they’re infectious. And so if one spouse has it, the other one is likely to get it. And what you need is the peace of God to come back into that relationship, into your marriage, to give you peace that He is going to provide, so that you can be there for your children in their formative years. I think it’s very important. I think children need to have parents around them. And if you can possibly swing it, do. I know in my own life, I felt God was leading me into the Philippines, that He was telling me to quit my job as a lawyer and go be a missionary. And in the natural, it just seemed like insane, and it seemed like it was the craziest thing ever. And then when I got to the Philippines, He kept assuring me that the support for the initiatives I was going to do was going to come from the Philippines. It was going to come from Asia. It wasn’t going to come from the United States. I started talking about that, and everybody thought I was absolutely insane. And you talk about stress levels. I got to a stress level, because God had to strip off of me concepts of how He provides. And it’s not providing in the usual way. When God supplies, it’s incredible. And He literally took me to a point of accumulation of monthly payables debt. And when I finally exhausted all the resources that I knew how as a lawyer and finally came to the end, I literally prayed, “Lord, this is it. There’s nothing more. I’m dependent on you.” And that was exactly what He wanted to hear. And within 24 hours of that prayer, that thing completely turned around. So when you get to the end of yourself, that’s wonderful, because in your weakness, God’s strength is made perfect. Have we got time? TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Brandon. We’ve got time for one more. “I really enjoy business seminars. One I attended recently discussed how all humans are motivated by the avoidance of pain or the hope of pleasure. This seems to make sense. Which do you believe is the greater motivator of human beings: avoiding punishment or receiving a reward? And does this fit with Christian faith?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Brandon, yes, avoidance of pain. Most people avoid pain. And if you give pleasure to them, they will come back for more. But this is a real superficial understanding, because if this were entirely true, we would never have children. So what about that? What about that transaction of a longer term fulfillment? I think the greatest motivator of human beings is love. And when you come to that understanding of unconditional love, that you’re willing to pour into your children again and again and again, when you’re willing to give to others, when you’re willing to love your neighbor as yourself, you will find incredible satisfaction, incredible satisfaction. And none of this is intuitive. It is all counterintuitive. And so much of God’s Kingdom is counterintuitive. The world wants you to think, “Well, everybody is in it for pleasure. Everybody is in it for their own gain.” Wrong. Wrong. There are things that transcend that. And when we enter into that, we enter into a true understanding of God. Occasionally I’ve prayed to Him and said, “Lord, what’s in it for you? Why did you make me? You knew what I was going to do. You knew I was going to rebel. You knew I was going to turn away. You knew.” When you get an answer to that question, when you understand how much He loves you and loves you unconditionally, that He delights in you and He is willing to pour whatever sacrifice, whatever cost. When Jesus told me, “Gordon, if you were the only one to believe, I still would have come for you.” All my questions seemed really meaningless in the face of that love. When you understand that, you understand a great deal. TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s powerful. Thank you for your questions on this Monday. Well, still ahead, doctors feared this man would never walk again, but he did just three weeks later. GRAPHIC: HEALING TOUCH Find out how that happened, right after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 5: YOU WERE THERE TERRY MEEUWSEN: I have the privilege of traveling all over the world and seeing firsthand the life changing things you make possible through your partnership. Thank you for joining The 700 Club. Here in India, you’re demonstrating the love of God to such wonderful people, most of who are in great need, both physically and spiritually. You’re bringing hope and joy to millions around the world, just like you did for Chen Yu. Born with a serious heart defect, doctors said he would soon die. His parents couldn’t afford surgery. That’s when you provided the operation that saved his life. Your monthly gift makes it possible to heal the sick, feed the hungry and preach the Gospel, both at home in America and throughout the world. So please watch for this mailing and send in your pledge. Imagine lifting someone’s life out of despair and filling it with hope instead. That’s what you make possible every day, and it only happens because you were there. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: After his stroke, Paul Teske just wanted to make it out of the emergency room alive. His doctors weren’t so sure. They figured he had permanent damage. But Paul heard a promise: he would be healed in exactly 21 days. PAUL TESKE RENELLE RICHARDSON: Pastor Paul Teske was always prepared to give his sermons. But one day in May of 2004, something happened during his message that he wasn’t ready for. Paul Teske: About three or four minutes into my talk, as I’m moving back and forth, I went to transfer my weight to my left leg, and as I did, I couldn’t put any weight on it. It was like a light switch had gone off, because it was completely useless. It was just hanging there like a sack of potatoes. RENELLE RICHARDSON: Paul fell hard to the floor. People rushed to his side to help. Paul’s friends took him to the hospital, where a CAT scan revealed the cause of his collapse: a cerebral hemorrhage. The bleeding had stopped, but the doctor told him if he started again, he could die. Paul Teske: I’m not thinking at that point at all about healing. I’m thinking about, “All right, am I going to live? Am I going to make it through this?” when I’m in the emergency room. RENELLE RICHARDSON: The doctors kept him 12 more days in case he started bleeding again. During his stay, Paul says the Lord spoke to him. Paul Teske: God just spoke to me and said, “I’m going to heal you in 21 days.” RENELLE RICHARDSON: While in the hospital, Paul found out that healing evangelist Benny Hinn was holding a crusade, exactly 21 days after Paul collapsed. He knew he had to go. Paul Teske: And I was so convinced of it. I absolutely knew that God was going to heal me on May 28th. RENELLE RICHARDSON: Meanwhile, Paul was released from the hospital and started physical therapy. Doctors told him he would walk again, but the damage was permanent, and he would always need a walker and a brace. Despite the reports, he held on to God’s promise. The day finally came for Paul to attend the service. Paul says he got what he came for. Paul Teske: I’m standing. I start to shake. I felt like I was just—my body started to vibrate. And Rivers said, “What’s going on?” I said, “I think God’s healing me.” RENELLE RICHARDSON: Then, out of the thousands gathered, pastor Hinn invited Paul and his wife, Rivers, to come up on the stage, where he prayed for them. Paul Teske: I was completely restored. I was playing golf. My life was completely healed. RENELLE RICHARDSON: Five years have passed, and Pastor Teske is still going strong: no walker and no brace. He even prays for others around the world. Paul Teske: For the last five years my wife and I have literally seen thousands of people healed, from Iceland to India, from Israel to China, from Norway to you name it. RENELLE RICHARDSON: Paul says he will always credit God for his miraculous recovery. Paul Teske: Well, I think God revealed that He’s the same yesterday, today and forever. Jesus healed yesterday. Jesus heals today, and He’s going to heal tomorrow. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * HOSTS PRAY FOR NEEDS TERRY MEEUWSEN: And when He heals, He does it well. That’s an amazing story, isn’t it? Well, here is another amazing story. This is Pam, who is from Parker, Colorado. She had been suffering with irritable bowel syndrome since 1998. Then last May while working as a nurse, she seriously injured her back. She had to quit her job. She was strong in her faith, expecting God to heal her. Three weeks later on May 29th, she was watching this program. And Gordon, the Lord gave you this word of knowledge. You said, “There are many people being healed in their abdomen right now. Just claim it in Jesus’ name. You’re feeling oil go throughout your abdomen. God is healing you now, in Jesus’ name.” So Pam claimed this word for herself. She put one hand on her abdomen and one on her back. Soon I had a word from the Lord about healing someone’s lower back: “There is pain, which extends down your hip and into your legs. Move your hip around. You’ll find it’s completely free. It’s gone. You don’t feel the pain anymore.” Pam got out of bed, began moving her body in different positions. She said she felt tingling go throughout her body as we prayed, and she knew she was being healed. All the pain in her abdomen and back left immediately. She began joyously jumping and praising the Lord. And within one week, she was back to work as a nurse on her feet all day. GORDON ROBERTSON: Praise God. That can happen to you. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And today if we’ll hear His voice, today, let today be the day of salvation for you. Let today be the day of healing. Let today be the day where you have an encounter with the living God. Don’t for a minute think He is far away, that somehow or other you’ve got to beg and plead, and it’s all up to some kind of merit on your part, and you’ve got to bargain with Him or anything like that. The price has been paid. Jesus paid it. He never required anything of anyone He healed, except that they believe. And today, if you will believe that He is the Messiah, that He came to set captives free, that He came to heal the sick, to give eyesight to the blind, that same healing power can flow through you. All that it requires is that you believe. So just be like a little child. When Daddy says it’s going to happen, you just know it’s going to happen. So just lay your hand on that area of the body that needs healing. Terry and I will agree. And today Jesus will be the same for you. What He has done for others, He will do for you. Just believe. “Lord God, we just lift the needs of the audience to you. And we just speak healing over them. And Lord, as people are laying hands on that area of the body that needs healing, we just join with them. And together we are laying hands, and together we are saying out loud be healed. Be made whole, in Jesus’ name. Recover instantly now. Instantly. Today is the day of healing. And Lord, when we receive you we receive healing power, resurrection power.” There is someone, you’re laying your hand on the top of your head. You’ve been diagnosed with a tumor, and the doctor says left temporal lobe. I don’t know what that is, but you do. So right now, in Jesus’ name, that tumor is shrinking and going away right now. And that pain is leaving you right now in Jesus’ name. That is leaving now, in Jesus’ name. Be healed. Someone else with a condition in your right hip, and God is just healing and restoring, and He’s leveling your pelvis now. And He is restoring bone in the socket right now, in Jesus’ name. Be healed. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Eyes. There are many of you, your hands on your eyes. Macular degeneration. Some of you have a problem with your retina, cornea, all kinds of eye problems. God is pouring out His healing power right now. Receive your sight. The Lord has healed you. GORDON ROBERTSON: There is someone with an injury in the vertebrae of your neck, and it’s causing very sharp pain when you turn. And turn your head, and God is just taking away those bone chips now. And in Jesus’ name, be healed of that and be restored. Now what you couldn’t do, do it now. Begin to move your neck and realize that pain is gone, and you’ve got free movement now. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The pain is also gone in your elbow. You’ve been in, I believe it was a car accident. And you have a pin in your elbow. God is completely taking all of that arthritis and that stiffness out of that. GORDON ROBERTSON: And someone else with problems in your right ear. A deep infection has caused hearing loss. God has just healed you, in Jesus’ name. Be healed and be made whole. If you’ve been touched by God, we want to share in your good report, so call us: 1-800-759-0700.
