The 700 Club - August 17, 2011

Miss United States 2011 Ashley Smith joins us to share her story of faith, and Nancy Dunn's harrowing experience of being raised by a practicing satanist.

Transcript

She was a typical girl with an all-American family. On the outside, everything looked just normal. But behind closed doors: My father was actually a Satanist high priest, so he did all kinds of evil things. See what happened when she was old enough to fight back. I just lost it. I just totally lost it. Plus, Miss United States 2011 winner Ashley Smith on today's 700 Club. Well, welcome to The 700 Club. We get so excited when we hear good news, and we all look for good news. And this year there was talk on what they called an “Arab spring,” where protests in countries like Egypt could lead to democracy. But in Syria, that dream has turned into a nightmare. In fact, Pat, Syria has brutally cracked down on people protesting against the government. Our very own John Waage has the story. During the past five months of turmoil, Assad has banned the foreign press. So the stories of large street protests and brutal violence come from opposition cameras. This crowd is chanting, “The nation wants to topple the regime!” These pictures show the port city of Latakia, where gunboats this weekend joined Syrian troops in shelling areas with many women and children. UN officials fear for the safety of some 10,000 Palestinians in Latakia who have gone missing. We need to be able to tend to the sick, the dying women and children. But to begin with, we need to know where they are. So we need access, which is something we’re calling urgently on the Syrian regime to give us. The Assad regime's continued brutality is galvanizing international opinion. There has been a crescendo of condemnation, not only from the world, but in particular from the region. Strong words from the Secretary of State, but with more than 2,000 Syrians killed, there is still no call from President Obama for Assad to go. Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah called the Syrian government “a killing machine” and pulled the Saudi ambassador more than a week ago. Many Arab leaders are angry that Assad has his tanks in the streets during the holy month of Ramadan. The U.S. and Europe are still focused on sanctions as a way to push Assad to end the violence. We urge those countries still buying Syrian oil and gas, those countries still sending Assad weapons, those countries whose political and economic support give him comfort in his brutality, to get on the right side of history. The Spanish newspaper El Pais reports that Spain has quietly offered asylum to Assad if he'll stop the violence and begin reforms. That offer is likely to be rejected, and the Syrian opposition can expect to see more tanks in the streets. John Waage, CBN News. Thanks, John. What John didn't tell you, and I’ll tell you, is that there is a group called the Alawites. They were very closely tied in with the Ba'ath party in Iraq, which, again, was a minority. And they are a minority, and a predominantly Sunni Muslim society. And the Assads have come in and ruled by military force and brutally. Hafez al Assad, Bashir’s father, was a brutal man, but he was much more adroit in statecraft than his son is. And now we’re shocked, because this man who was trained in England in medicine has turned into a ruthless thug. But here is the deal. Under the Alawites, the Christian minority in Syria has been spared. Even under Saddam Hussein, the Christian minority in Iraq was spared. But if a Muslim takeover becomes the rule in Syria, the Christians will be persecuted, even as they now are being persecuted in Iraq. That is the danger. And there could be terrible killings. There could be church bombings. There could be all of these awful things happening. And when you realize the Syrian Christians go all the way back to the time of the apostles, as do those in Iraq, and it is a tragedy to see what is happening and what will be happening. So as we applaud the fall of Bashir Assad, keep in mind there is a flip-side to that story. But this brutality is horrible. And the world now, because of the webcams and other things that are being put to bear, are seeing what didn't get seen 30 or 40 years ago under this man's father. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. Pat, the leaders of France and Germany are calling for stronger economic discipline among European nations. Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy want new balanced budget laws in all the Euro zone countries. They also want an economic government made up of the heads of those nations. Merkel and Sarkozy want the balanced budget amendments in place by next summer. Merkel stresses that the crisis has been building for several years and cannot be solved within days. The debt concerns in Europe are pushing gold higher. It moved close to 1,800 dollars today. Investors are still looking for a safe haven as Europe tries to work out its debt problems. They're also concerned about America's massive debt which has made the dollar weaker. One analyst from Wells Fargo worries that gold is in a bubble that could pop after fears about global debt subside. Others say gold could face some short-term corrections, but it’s still be headed for higher prices in the long run. Pat, what do you think? Well, as you know I told you several years ago that gold would hit 1,800 dollars an ounce, and, guess what? It has already hit 1,800, and it is teetering around that right now, in the 1,790s, et cetera. In order to match the high of the 1980s, gold would have to go to 2,300 dollars, inflation-adjusted. So we still aren't as high as it has been in inflation terms. And there is no practical reason it won't go to 2,000 or above. So it will keep on going as this turmoil continues. Some time it might turn over, and it will be a sharp correction; but it doesn't seem like in the next couple of months that’s going to happen. Lee. Imagine no monthly car payments, no insurance premiums, no repair bills, and no need to fill up at the gas station. Those are just some of the perks of a program called “Car Sharing.” The idea is popping up in cities all across the U.S. Heather Sells reports now from Denver. Josh Davies is one of several thousand Denverites who take advantage of car sharing. For Davies, it's a simple plan that fits into his daily life. When he needs a car, he reserves one using his cell, sometimes a day ahead and sometimes just minutes before. He picks it up from one of multiple locations around the city and then returns it several hours later, the cost just an hourly charge. For him and his wife, it's been an easy change. They live in downtown Denver and wanted to do something good for both the environment and their pocketbook. For the Davies, car sharing has meant they need to own only one car. It's just a lot of money that you spend needlessly to have a second automobile, so that's why we decided to go with the car share. And they’re not alone. The practice started in Europe and is now picking up traction in the U.S. Car sharing expanded here by 16 percent in the last year. In cities from New York to San Francisco, more than half a million people are registered to use some 7,000 car share cars. Our members are early adopters. They’re environmentalists. They’re families that are watching their pennies. But Hill admits the model works best for urban dwellers who also have transit and bike options. That's because the cars are typically placed in downtown locations; and members pay by the hour, so shorter trips are better. For Davies and his wife, the environmental pay off and the savings make it a win-win. Typically, I’m using it for an hour or two hours at a time. I’ll go drive for a meeting somewhere and bring it right back. And so it's costing me around 20 dollars per trip that I use it, and I maybe use it two or three times a month. It's not uncommon, says Hill, for families that car share to drop a car. And that also helps reduce congestion, pollution, and eventually could reduce demand for parking. We also are really aiming for the family that might have two or three cars, and they could maybe reduce that. If you're not in the mood to rent a car in Denver, you can rent a bike, and that is perhaps the ultra-green way to go here. Reporting in Denver, Heather Sells, CBN News. The European Space Agency is planning a mission to see if spacecraft can be used to move asteroids. The London Daily Mail reports scientists are trying to figure out if they can actually change the path of an asteroid if it’s heading towards Earth. The mission is called “Don Quixote.” It will use two spacecrafts, one to fire at a test asteroid, the other to collect and analyze data. The mission is expected to take place in four years. Researchers say that Americans are becoming more and more addicted to tanning beds. They call it “tanorexia.” And as Andrea Garrett reports, it’s proving to be deadly. Over the years experts have made it clear that tanning comes with many health risks. Yet every year nearly 30 million Americans go to indoor tanning beds, and more a million of those visit tanning salons every day. A new study published in Addiction Biology suggests a new theory on why tanning remains popular despite the health risks. We call it tanorexia, because what happens is that they’re never satisfied with the amount of tan that they have. Researchers say that findings point towards tanning being addictive. They say the brain of a frequent tanner responds to tanning in areas associated with rewards, the same areas activated in other addictions. Certain regions of the brain that we know are responsible, or partially responsible, for drug and alcohol addiction seem to have increased blood flow when you put UV light in front of these individuals who are known as “frequent tanners.” These new findings could explain why increased awareness about skin cancer, premature aging, and wrinkles are having little impact among those who obsessively tan. And people are beginning to tan at younger ages. Katie Donnar began tanning in sixth grade. She only stopped when she was diagnosed with melanoma. I continued tanning throughout high school about three times a week. The most deadly type of skin cancer, melanoma, is more common in women and kills women predominantly in their 20s. So this is a life and death issue for these women. Each year melanoma kills more than 9,000 people. Researchers say that people under the age of 30 who use a tanning bed 10 times a year have eight times the risk of developing melanoma. Andrea Garrett, CBN News. Pat, melanoma is such a dangerous and deadly disease. Hopefully people are getting the message about this. They get the message. But don't you get tired of scaring people? Every time we turn around on this program, we’re scaring them about something else. “You’re eating too much fat. You’re sitting around on the couch too long. You're watching television. You’re watching pornography. You're tanning. You’ve got anorexia.” I mean, give me a break. We have so many problems. We are so addicted to ourselves. We’re inwardly focused on, you know, holding our pulse. “What is it?” Then they go “Ah!” Oh, get a life! Kristi. Well, that was fun commentary, because I was thinking I didn't know what to say about the whole tanning thing. All I had was jokes, and I’m not going to go there. You don't obviously go to tanning beds, do you, dear? Go on. This is au natural. All right, well, up next, it is one of the top producers of oil, and, check this out, it is also ruled by one of the most ruthless dictators. We have a rare look at the life inside of Libya when we come back. Coming up later . . . . My father worked for the aerospace industry. My mother worked for a doctor. But after office hours: My father was a actually a Satanist high priest. What happened in their house of horrors. As soon as I was able to have a baby, I was pregnant. On today’s 700 Club. So that the Satanists would have a baby to sacrifice to the devil. Do you have money to burn? If not, you need to know that the paper dollars you've invested your life savings in are being consumed right now in a growing blaze of inflation and declining value. Economists know why the dollar is burning and at risk of crashing. It's because politicians and central bankers keep printing them, and this makes the dollars you've worked so hard to for, worth less and less. The politicians and bankers hated the gold standard, because it forced them to be honest. That's why the U.S. dollar keeps losing value and could soon crash. The good news is that you can create your own personal gold standard and keep your savings protected when the dollar crashes. Call or visit online now. Well, the civil war in Libya began six months ago, and our president said, “Well, America is going to, quote, ‘lead from behind.’” Well, we’re still behind, because the war is a standoff and his call that Gadhafi had to go apparently has been unheeded, and with Moammar Gadhafi insisting that he will remain in the land of his ancestors. Well, what could happen if Gadhafi is finally removed from power? Our Gary Lane has that story from eastern Libya. As Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi contemplates his possible exit strategy, many people wonder what kind of country will he leave behind. Some here in Benghazi say conditions can't get much worse. Nearly six months of unresolved struggle has taken a toll on their nation. Mourners attended the funeral procession of another fallen rebel soldier. Thirty-eight-year-old Abdel el Zoueihid died after fighting Gadhafi’s troops in the battle of Kofra. His grieving father suggests more outside help is needed, so his son's death will not be in vain. We ask the American people to stand up with us in this affliction, to support us with weapons and international resolutions and money to eliminate this tyrant and this criminal who makes the Libyan people homeless. Of course, the people here in eastern Libya are elated to finally be free from Gadhafi. But they know their freedom comes with a cost, not only in war dead and wounded, but also they know there is a long struggle ahead to rebuild their government and their lives. Libya is one of the world's top oil countries, producing 1.7 million barrels daily. At least 40 to 50 billion dollars is generated annually. Three-quarters of the oil is produced in the eastern part of the country, now in the hands of the rebels. Many Libyans in the east are encouraged by that development, because they've reaped few of the oil benefits in the past. They say most of the revenue went to Gadhafi, his family, tribe, and non-Libyans. I am from Benghazi, and I don’t have a job, even though our country has a lot of money. All the money is going outside of Libya in Africa and other places. That's why I have started this kiosk, so I’ll have some income. And the ongoing fighting is crippling the Libyan economy. Food and medicines are scarce in some areas and expensive in cities like this one, 50 miles from Tripoli. The situation is okay here in our city of Gharyan, but prices are shooting up. Inadequate housing and healthcare are matters of concern for these Libyans near the eastern city of Beida. This man told CBN News his house has a leaky metal roof, no sewage system, windows, or air conditioning. His family is living in stuffy, stifling hot conditions. This elderly widow told us she suffers from diabetes, asthma, and other health challenges. She says she can't afford her medicine. And this man’s house was destroyed. His daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren were killed late one night when a misguided NATO missile struck their house. I shouldn't have outlived my child. I am angry. I want this war to end. Most of these Libyans are looking for a better life, one without the dictator who has ruled their country for 41 years. But unless Gadhafi steps aside, little is likely to change, and no end to the war appears in sight. Federal troops and Gadhafi loyalists control much of the west. Rebel troops hold most of the east. By mid-summer, a military stalemate. That’s because outside help has been limited. While the U.S. Congress has approved continued funding for American participation in the NATO air campaign, it refuses to fund the rebels. NATO's goal is to protect civilians, and even though Gadhafi's movements are being tracked, rules of engagement restrict NATO bombers from killing him. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says there's no military solution to the Libyan conflict. Anders Fogh Rasmussen (NATO Sec. General): We are in favor of all attempts to find a political solution and seek a peaceful way towards democracy in Libya. In the meantime, pro-Gadhafi rallies continue in Tripoli. And in the liberated city of Benghazi, people express gratitude for the help they've received from France and the United States. This man expressed appreciation for Hillary Clinton: A strong woman and beautiful, you are in the heart of a free Libya. Others realize a long, difficult struggle lies ahead, with or without outside help. They pray the war will end soon, that their entire country will be freed from a tyrant, united as one nation striving together toward a more prosperous future. Gary Lane, CBN News, Benghazi, Libya. Gadhafi has been a bad actor. You know that airplane that he was engaged, or his people were engaged in shooting down, that was a terrible thing, that TWA airplane. He probably was responsible for the butcher of the Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics. But the truth is he told a congressman friend of mine, a former congressman friend of mine, that when he saw Saddam Hussein coming out of that rat hole over there in Iraq, he decided it was time to straighten up. So he made nice with the United States and gave up his nuclear ambitions. And I don't really know what it is he’s doing these days, whether he has been that oppressive in Libya. It is not exactly a free country, but it is not nearly as bad as some of the others. So there is a standoff, and the United States basically is saying, “We have a war. It is not declared by Congress, so it can't be a war. We're going to, quote, ‘lead from behind,’” which is hardly the way for a great nation to behave. Our president has said he’s got to go, Gadhafi has to go, but Gadhafi is still there. So it makes our president look impotent. The whole thing is sort of a mess. And what’s going to happen next? Well, it looks like the standoff is going to continue, because NATO isn't prepared to pour in a large amount of money. We aren't prepared to bomb Gadhafi. We aren't prepared to really send in special forces and try to kill him. We're going to leave him alone. So he twists in the wind; we twist in the wind. And many people are saying, as Ron Paul said in those recent debates, “What are we doing in Libya? Let's leave it alone. Let the Libyans work it out.” And that probably is what we should do. Kristi. Well, Pat, we're going to big time switch gears on this one. Do you remember the show, I think it was in the maybe ‘1960s, ‘50s, ‘60s, remember the show The Addams Family? Ghoulish. Very ghoulish. Ghoulish. Ghoulish. Well, check this out. Up next, we have an amazing story about a household that actually makes the Addams family look tame. Take a look. My father was actually a Satanist high priest, so he did all kinds of evil things. He sexually assaulted me. He took me to satanic rituals. This woman shares more of her chilling story when we come back. Got a question for Pat? Send us yours now on CBN.com. If a Hollywood scriptwriter had written the horror story that we're about to tell you, you wouldn't have believed it. It would have been too fantastic. Nancy Dunn's home looked ordinary from the outside. Those things often do. And you wouldn't believe, you wouldn’t believe that inside that house was a house of horrors. This is America, folks. And this is just something to be laughed at by the liberals. But Nancy’s father was a satanist priest. You say, “Well, does it matter what you believe about religion?” Well, ask her, when she became the baby breeder for her father's sacrifices to the devil. Nancy Dunn was raised in what looked like the typical American family. I lived in California. My father worked for the aerospace industry. My mother worked for a doctor. And so on the outside everything just looked normal, but nobody really knew what was going on behind closed doors. My father was actually a satanic high priest, so he did all kinds of evil things. He sexually assaulted me. He took me to satanic rituals. My father actually used me as a baby breeder, which means I was impregnated to carry a child so that the satanists would have a baby to sacrifice to the devil in their satanic rituals. As soon as I was able to have a baby, I was pregnant. The abuse in Nancy’s home continued throughout her adolescence. Her babies were delivered by midwives, and there was no record of their births. And so if I was out of school for weeks or months on end, my parents could call the school, and there was no big deal. There was never an investigation. However, back when she was eight years old, an elderly neighbor befriended Nancy and invited her to church. My parents let me go, because they were doing an olympic type event where kids were competing and playing. So she took me to that meeting, and it was really awesome to me; because at eight years old, one of the ladies there preached the Gospel to me. She shared with me who Jesus was. And that very day in that very moment, I knew that was the truth. And I asked Jesus Christ to come into my heart. At age 18, she married the first man that came along to escape her abusive upbringing. When her marriage fell apart one year later, she began to lead a promiscuous lifestyle. But I became pregnant at age 21 years old, and I was alone. So a friend offered me a solution, and I had an abortion. After the abortion, the guilt and shame of her decision and a flood of traumatic childhood memories sent Nancy running back to the church. I really loved God in my heart, but I didn’t really know how to have that walk with Him, so I joined a church. I began to read the Word of God. I began to really pursue a relationship with my heavenly Father. As I began to try to walk that out, there were all these stumbling blocks. At times, it felt like there was a wall or a ceiling between God and I. There was a lot of fear in my life, a lot of anxiety in my life. My self-esteem was just nothing. I always felt that I was just lower than the dirt, and I couldn’t really ever understand why God would love me or what His love could do for me. Nancy sought Christian counseling. Her counselor discovered that she was suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, meaning she was having flashbacks so severe that she had split into several personalities in order to cope with the trauma. The memories were compartmentalized, and so God began to bring them to me one at a time. The Holy Spirit will never give us more than we can handle, so God really directed that, and He began to help me process through each memory. And I just began to press into God for my deliverance. And I just began to cry out to God with all I had all the time for my freedom. And it was a process of about a year and a half that I was in counseling working with this therapist. And I remember visiting a church on Valentine’s Day. They were preparing the elements for communion, and I was getting a little nervous inside, because in the natural, I was forced to drink human blood in the satanic rituals, so the blood seemed so crazy to me. But I heard the Lord speak to me and He said, “If you will drink of My blood and eat of My body, I will heal you from everything the enemy has done to you.” So I took communion, and everything changed. And I became one whole person. God did it in a moment through communion. After taking communion, the Lord also led Nancy through a process of forgiving her father. The next time she saw him, he was on his deathbed. He was in ICU. They didn’t think that he could speak to me, and yet he sat up in the bed. He sat up in the bed, and he repented to me. Well, I just lost it. I just totally lost it. And I just looked at my father, and I said, “You know, Dad, all I want to know is if you know Jesus.” And he said, he looked me and smiled, and he said that he had just said the sinner’s prayer with a neighbor who was a pastor. And I just had tears flowing down my face. And I said, “The only thing I want is I need to hear you say it.” And so my father said the sinner’s prayer with me, and about 60 seconds later, he died and he went to Heaven. Today, Nancy is an advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. She has also helped start orphanages in five different nations and travels the world to share her story and minister deliverance. I’m free. I feel so free. I feel so light. I feel so happy. And God is allowing me to be a part of setting other people free. I just want to say there is power in the blood of Jesus, and the blood has never lost its power, and it will never lose its power. Jesus didn’t come and shed His blood so that we’d remain in captivity. He came and shed His blood that we would be free. And I’m telling you, God wants us free! Satan. People dabble in Satan. They think it's cute. They think it's avant-garde. They think it’s “way out.” “I’m going to go a séance. I’m going to go into a ritual. I’m going to have a pentagram. And I’m going to call on Satan to give me power.” There are a lot of people who want power. They want power over others. They want wisdom. They want some sort of occult knowledge, and they think that Satan can give it to them and give them an edge in life. The old play years ago about the devil and Daniel Webster, when the man sold his soul to the devil, and the devil gave him certain things, and then he wanted his soul. And Webster made the great case to keep him from going to Hell. But many of you have had the bargain. Satan has held out things to you and said, “You take these.” He offered it to Jesus. He said, “If you’ll fall down and worship me, all of the kingdoms in the earth will be yours.” He offered Him the world, all the money, all the power, all the prestige. Many people have been offered that deal, and they have said yes to Satan. And you may have been into the occult with all of these rituals and things. I think the Nazis, from what I gather, were satanic. I think that Adolph Hitler may well have been demon possessed. I think many of them were demonized. Nothing will account for the hatred of the Jews other than something that is beyond human understanding. It was so violent. But Satan hates people. He wants to destroy you, because you're made in the image of God. And if he can entice you, if he can lead you astray, if he can do anything to capture you, he will do it, because he wants you in Hell. And yesterday I talked about Hell. And he wants you there because the lake of fire is reserved for the devils and his angels. That's what Hell was reserved for, not for people, but for the devil and his angels. Don’t play with the occult. Don’t play with séances. Don’t try go get involved with these things. Yes, this stuff is real. It's not that it’s fake and phony. It's real. But it’s really bad, and it will really hurt you. If you've been dabbling in the occult, I want you to pray with me right now, whatever it is. You may be a teenager, and you've been playing with this stuff. I want you to be free. I want you to pray with me right now, and I want you to renounce the underhand works of the devil. Say these words. As I pray, I want you to say them, but mean them in your heart. Pray with me now, wherever you are. That's right. Bow your head and pray. Say these words. “Jesus.” That's right. Say it. “Jesus, I know you are the son of God. And, Jesus, I know that you came to destroy the works of the devil. And so, Lord Jesus, I come to you now, and I ask you to come into my heart and set me free from satanic bondage. I ask for freedom, Lord, and I take you as my Lord and my Savior. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. And at this moment, I renounce the occult. I renounce witchcraft. I renounce tarot cards. I renounce Ouija boards. I renounce all of the works of the occult. In your name, Jesus, I cast them from me, and I ask you to fill me now with your Holy Spirit. Thank you, Lord, for hearing my prayer. Thank you for coming into my heart.” Now, if you prayed with me just then, I want you to do something. I want you to take the next step. We have people on the phones that love you, who care about you. And I want you to call and say, “Look, I just prayed with Pat. I prayed with that guy on TV, and I gave my heart to Jesus. I’m free of this.” And if you need further prayer and counseling, we'll be glad to help you. We have a little booklet called “Angels, Demons, and the End Times.” I think there will be some things here that might be helpful. You get some understanding of what the Bible says about this. Again, it’s real. I don't make any mistake that Satan is real. Angels are real. Demons are real. But just because they are real doesn't mean they're necessarily of God or good. So call right now. and I want to pray for you. Father, for those who prayed with me just now, in the name of Jesus, fill them with the Holy Spirit. Satan, I break your hold over them in Jesus' name. Amen. Call. Somebody loves you: 1-800-759-0700. It is a toll-free call. People are standing by. Please call now. It is important that you do it. Kristi. Thank you so much, Pat. An amazing story. President Obama will unveil his plans for job growth in a major speech early next month. The speech is expected right after Labor Day. A prayer circle is credited with saving the lives of the band Sugarland. The country duo was set to perform on the stage that collapsed at the Indiana State Fair last weekend. They were in a prayer circle before the collapse when their stage manager decided to hold them backstage for a few minutes longer. Hellen Rollens’ decision probably saved every band and crew member's life. Sugarland is planning a private memorial service in Indiana to honor the five fans that were killed in that tragedy. You’ll be glad you did. Tomorrow . . . . I just woke up one day and was having feelings for my best friend. Her best friend returned those feelings. I could just hear this voice telling me, “That’s going to be your woman.” Plus . . . . Stalactites like a fire, a devil with an horns, pitchfork and a tail. Meet the pastor who didn't believe in Hell and find out what changed his mind. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. Well, Miss America, Miss Universe. Well, we're all familiar with these beauty pageants, but unless you're a fan of the movie Miss Congeniality, you may never have heard of the Miss United States pageant, the real one, not the one in the movie. Take a look. Ashley Smith entered her high school pageant to meet people, and won. This set her up for a seven-year career, winning every title, except a state crown. Ashley was discouraged and just about to hang up her heels when she found out about Miss United States. So please welcome to The 700 Club Miss United States, Ashley Smith. Yay! Good to see you. Wonderful to meet you. Okay, can I say I feel really underdressed. I’m like, no one told me—where is my crown? What? Right? You look fabulous. You don't need one. Girl, can I borrow that one? Absolutely. After the show? Not a problem. Wonderful. We’ll chat about it. Okay. You are a Regent student. I am. And what are you studying? I’m studying journalism at the School of Communication and the Arts, loving it. It’s a wonderful program. So what do you want to do? I’m looking into a career in broadcasting, so let me know. We’ll chat about it. Because you want my job? Absolutely. Okay. Do you want me to get up, and we could switch, and you can be me? We could do that. That could work. Okay. Let’s go for it. No. Kidding! I’m just saying improv. We can do that. I know. I know the director in the back is like, “Oh, my Lord, what is Kristi going to do?” Well, we are so proud of you. We always talk about Regent university and just all of the different people who have just come out to conquer the world from that university, and you're one of many, but we're so proud of you. Thank you. Okay, so the Miss United States pageant. What is that and how is that different from the other pageants that are out there? Well, for the most part, it’s not. You still have a lot of preparation. You still have to eat healthy and do the right things, and you still have to get your mind right for competition. For the most part, the main difference is the fact that Miss United States, as well as Miss USA, don't have talent competitions, and Miss America does. Other than that, you're still traveling across the country. You’re still impacting people’s lives, and you’re still a role model. So not much of a difference, actually. Wow. A lot of us think of it as a beauty pageant, but it’s so much more than that. I mean, obviously you’re stunning, and you’re beautiful, and you’re intelligent. Thank you. But how do you prepare for it, I mean, kind of behind the scenes? Right. Well, I think the first thing is, and I know it is a little bit a cliché, but you have to know who you are. You have to believe in yourself and your particular strengths. Each pageant system offers different opportunities. For the Miss United States system, it focuses a lot on community service. So you have to be a big community service advocate. My personal community platform is breast cancer awareness, so I do a lot in the community with that. And, as well, they look for someone who can really articulate the values of the program, integrity, fairness, and really giving all girls an opportunity to compete and succeed. Girl, you're blowing me away. I’m just listening to you like, “Wow, she’s so good.” Oh, thanks. They train you well. They train you well. They do! Now, you have had a phenomenal winning streak. There was about seven years that you were like bam, bam, bam, bam. Right? Absolutely. So what was it that actually inspired you to get into the pageants in the first place? Well, I didn’t start until I was in high school. I know a few girls start a little younger than that, but I wasn't really sure what path I wanted to take when I was in high school. I had a couple of friends here and there, but I wasn't really one of those girls that was into the popularity and crowd and the cheerleaders. I didn't have that. So what I decided to find something that didn't have anything to do with athleticism, because that could have been embarrassing. So I went for the pageant route. I heard of Miss Oscar Smith High School right here in Chesapeake, Virginia. And so what I decided to do was go for that and just see what happened, maybe meet some girls and communicate with them and talk with them, and relate on that level. And from there, I just decided that I should try for some other things. And that same year, actually, I went for the title of Miss Virginia Beach and won. Wow! So that started me on a completely different career path. It was something I didn't plan, but thankfully it was in the cards for me. How cool is that? It’s awesome. And something you said at the beginning of the interview was that you have to know who you are. Absolutely. And you’ve always known who you are, because you grew up in the church. In fact, one of our cameramen was so excited, because he’s seen you since you were a little kid, and he knows your mama and daddy. He said to me, “Now, Kristi, now she is the real deal.” So tell me about the real deal in you. Who is Jesus Christ to you? Ashley Smith: Jesus Christ to me, of all things, of course, being my Lord and Savior, but I think most of all being my friend, someone who I can confide in. Growing up is difficult, especially in this day and age when so people are focused on your appearance and focused on the way that the media portrays beauty. And if you don't fit those standards, then you seem to be alone. And that's what I went through in high school is that feeling of being alone. So what I ended up doing, actually, in my high school years, I got much closer to God than I ever thought I would, just because He was the one person who saw something in me that I didn't see in myself. So He was the one that motivated me and encouraged me to go further, and to tell me this is only a season, it’s a period of time, and it is actually going to be used as a testimony later on in your life. So I got to get a glimpse of that when I was younger. And that's what kept me motivated to keep going and to ultimately be here where I am today. That's amazing. You have a wonderful platform, obviously, where you get to travel all around and meet a lot of different people, speak with a lot of individuals. How are you able to convey your faith and what the Lord has done in your life to people who you meet? Well, the one thing that I like to use, I like to use the Bible character of Mary, because she was one of the main people in the Bible who really was overcome by her circumstances. She came from a really bad background, and she was in a very poor class. But she was elevated to one of the most substantial positions in the Bible, because she kept her faith, and she always had a song in her heart. So actually what I do is I speak to people across the nation about always finding that song in your heart that keeps you going, that keeps you motivated, and something you can kind of utilize as reference when you're having a bad day. Well, you are a dynamic, Ashley. It is my honor and my pleasure just to meet you. Oh, thank you so much. And you ready? One of the things I love to do is kind of throw people. So I’m going to throw you. So you want to be a journalist, right? Yes, absolutely. So one day you want this job? Absolutely. I’m going to give you the opportunity. Wonderful. You're going to look in that camera right now. I’m going to look in this camera. And you’re going to do the throw to the tease. And go for it. All right. Well, actually, oh, and just go ahead and read? Just say it. Just read. Read what is up there. Oh, we’re reading what’s going on. Well, still to come, we'll bring it online from our chat room. Jen says, “One of my close friends passed away yesterday, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it, so what do you suggest?” Fantastic! To see this week’s top on demand videos, go to CBN.com. Well, their homes were destroyed, their neighbors killed. So many refugees of South Sudan fled to the mountains to escape almost certain death. And now Operation Blessing is working to keep them alive. Watch this. For many in South Sudan, there is still excitement surrounding their newly formed country. But for the refugees fleeing into the Nuba Mountains because of the ongoing fighting, life is still very hard. Operation Blessing is working to deliver food, medicine, clean water, and supplies to these displaced peoples who are fleeing there. We helped to load a chartered DC3 in Nairobi. Operation Blessing President Bill Horan jumped right in and told us more about the supplies we were flying into the country. Right now, we’ve got tents, blankets, a water purifier, chlorine generator, 750,000 albendazole tablets to de-worm kids. Once the plane landed, we didn't waste any time getting these critical supplies into the country, and to the Nuba people seeking refuge in the mountains, for women and children like Batamas and her two-year-old daughter. They fled to the Nuba Mountains after nine days of intensive fighting in their village. Her home was destroyed. Her neighbors were killed. Their story is like so many others who were able to escape, but then lacked even the basics to survive until Operation Blessing came to their aid. It’s a tragedy. It is more than genocide. Those Muslims in the north will not stop. They did ethnic cleansing in Darfur, and now they're going into the Nuba Mountains. These people poor people. Where can they hide? Where is the place they can be safe? Well, I don't know whether their cry will reach the ears of those in authority, but they have reached the ears of Bill Horan of Operation Blessing. And we were there at Operation Blessing to help them, bring supplies to them, and we will continue to do so. Where people are hurting, where people suffer, we want to be there in your name. So what can you do to make that possible? Well, I’ve told you many times, 65 cents a day, and you can help suffering, hurting people. It’s a 700 Club membership. Just pick up the phone, and call and say, “You can count on me.” And some of you can say, “Well, here’s 1,000 dollars. Here’s 5,000. Here’s more substantial, something I can do to help you help other people.” It’s a toll free number: 1-800-759-0700. Or you can log on to CBN.com and punch up Operation Blessing. And we also want to remind them that when they do call, we want to bless them. We’ve got the Life Beyond the Grave series that we want to give that to them as well. Amen. What else have you got? All right, well, listen it’s time to Bring It On. We've had the chat room open for the entire program, so now here we go. Jen says, “One of my close friends passed away yesterday. I’m having a really hard time dealing with it. What do you suggest?” Well, the thing that must suggest is, I must suggest, is that death is not the worst thing in the world. If you die in Jesus, you go to paradise. And so your friend, assuming your friend knew the Lord, is with Him right now in paradise. And he is enjoying things so delightful, you can't even describe them. So why would you want to deprive him of that? You say, “Well, I feel such a sense of loss.” Well, yes, you do. But right now rejoice that your friend is with the Lord. Secondly, understand that time heals all wounds. It takes time, and a week goes by and a month goes by and a year goes by. And before long, the memory of that dear friend will fade, and other friends will take the place. So just keep that in mind. It will take a while. But rejoice. Rejoice. That's why when I’m engaged in a funeral ceremony, it's a celebration, not a tragedy. What do you have? Yes, that's true. Whenever I’m sad or I’ve gone through something, I always just rely on the loving arms of Jesus. He'll hold you and cry with you. Amen. All right, well, Karen says, “Recently my pastor suggested that we watch a particular movie, because of the social issues it discusses. However, I looked up the movie and it contains times when actually the characters use the Lord's name in vain and other swear words. Do you think that he should have endorsed this movie?” I don’t know what movie you're talking about, and I don't know what the deal is. But it depends on what the themes were and what the problem was. So I can't comment, because I don't know what you're talking about. Basically speaking, pastors should be careful what they endorse, because if they send their flock to watch profanity and blasphemy, it isn't a good testimony. What else? All right, next question. Chelsea says, “I see in churches some people jump around and have convulsions as they receive the Holy Spirit. My church teaches that this is demonic possession. What's the truth here?” Well, I don't think it’s demonic possession, but I think oftentimes the flesh resists the Spirit, and when the flesh is resisting the power of the Holy Spirit, there can be some of these convulsions and barking. That is not necessarily a good thing. Don't think that's the evidence, that you've got to bark or roll or jump or whatever. That's the flesh resisting the Spirit. But to say it’s demonic, you don't know the circumstances. I’ve dealt with demon possessed people. There’s a difference. But you want to be possessed by the Holy Spirit, and these people presumably are. What else? Yes. And sometimes when people get filled with the Holy Spirit, you can shout and cry in joy and laugh. Well, it’s the joy of Lord coming. And the jumping. Yes. Yes. It’s the power of God. All right. What else? Exactly. Dwight says, “Jesus was not a rich man. He criticized the rich, in fact, so why do some prosperity preachers teach that Jesus was rich when He wasn't?” Well, I think they're wrong. He didn't have earthly possessions, and He made clear. But He did teach that if you give, it will be given unto you, pressed down, good measure, running over, men will heap into your bosom. So He taught about having. And the Bible is filled with examples of people who served God who, in turn, prospered. If you don't smoke, don't drink, don't waste your money on gambling, don't run around, and you save and invest over a period of time, you will grow fairly wealthy. It is just the law that’s in the universe. And I think, too, Pat—I don't mean to interrupt you. Did I interrupt you? I know I always do. Sorry. But I was thinking about the term “prosperity.” I think that kind of gets skewed so often that people think prosperity is money, when the Lord says that He gives life abundantly. And if we seek ye first the Kingdom of God, His righteousness, all these things will be added unto us. It is not just about the house and the car, but it is the fullness of Him. It can be health. It can be your family. I can be all this. Love, joy, peace, patience. Yes. Let's have one more question. Okay, Mary says, “I don't know what to do with my life. I just earned a college degree, but I don't know if I want to do what I studied for. How can I know what God wills for me? I’m praying but I feel trapped.” Mary, take your Bible, go off by yourself. Get away from the phone. Get away from the iPad. Get away from the whatever else, the e-mails, and just your Bible, you, and Jesus. And you tell Him that you'll do whatever He tells you. And I want you to know, the Lord will move Heaven and earth to keep you from being misled. Surrender totally to Him, and He will lead you. That I guarantee, but you have to be focused on that. Tomorrow, Muslim immigration in Norway. The shocking look at the impact on Norwegian women. See you tomorrow. Here at CBN, we see amazing things happen when we stand together.
