The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Monday, December 14, 2009 PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. The London Times has reported that the Iranians have a neutron trigger, the initiator I think they call it, of an atomic bomb. And they’ve been working on it since 2007. In other words, this is for wartime, not peace time. But it’s one of those things we’ll be talking about. And the health care, if you’re as tired of that debate as I am, it’s now running into serious trouble in the Senate. One leading Senator Joe Lieberman says he cannot vote for the bill as it stands now. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Some other key senators may also vote no, and that’s raising the question of whether or not the Democrats can pass the bill. John Jessup has the story from Washington. CARE JOHN JESSUP: Democrats should be looking forward to Christmas, but this year they probably are wishing it would hold off so they would have more time to meet their deadline to pass a healthcare bill. Last week, senior Democrats cheered their compromise to ditch a public option in favor of a national plan as a possible major step forward. Sen. Harry Reid ([D-NV] Majority Leader): This is a consensus that will help ensure that the American people win in a couple of different ways. JOHN JESSUP: Now, they are taking a step back as support has quickly faded. GRAPHIC: CBS “FACE THE NATION” Sen. Joe Lieberman ([I] Connecticut): I certainly would have a hard time voting for it, because it has some of the same infirmities that the public option did. It will add taxpayer costs. It will add to the deficit. It's unnecessary. JOHN JESSUP: Senator Lieberman, one of two Senate Independents who votes with the Democrats, says he will join Republicans in opposing the health care bill if it allows uninsured people starting at the age of 55 to buy in to Medicare, an idea was proposed by five liberal Democrats and five moderates to overcome a deadlock over a public health insurance option. And he is not the only one with reservations. GRAPHIC: FOX NEWS SUNDAY Sen. Claire McCaskill ([D] Missouri): I have to be assured that this is going to bring down the deficit and it's going to bring down healthcare costs for most Missouri families. Reporter: And if it doesn't? Sen. Claire McCaskill: Well, then we are going to have to go back to the drawing board. JOHN JESSUP: The bill needs 60 votes in order to pass, ad that would mean every Democrat and the Senate's two Independents would have to have to vote in favor of it. The problem is if certain provisions aren't in the bill, it could lose even more support. GRAPHIC: CBS “FACE THE NATION” Sen. Mitch McConnell ([R-KY] Minority Leader): I think they're in serious trouble on this, and the core problem is the American people do not want us to pass it. JOHN JESSUP: And Republicans have the numbers to prove it. According to a recent CNN opinion research poll, 61 percent of respondents oppose the Senate healthcare bill, while 36 percent support it. Seventy-nine percent think it would increase the deficit, and eighty-give percent believe it would increase taxes. And Democrats have another problem. A new report from economic analysts at the Department Of Health and Human Services says healthcare costs would go up more if the Democratic plan is passed than if Congress does nothing at all. So with 11 days before the Christmas deadline, Senate Democrats face some serious hurdles in overhauling health care. John Jessup, CBN News, Washington. PAT ROBERTSON: The Democrats must have a death wish, a death wish, to pass a bill in face of the overwhelming public opposition to it. It isn’t just some fringe group. It’s the overall public that says no. And now their own, the government’s own Health and Human Services says it will increase costs. What are they thinking? What is Harry Reid smoking up there? It’s just crazy. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, you feel like it’s a win gesture for the win’s sake, because nobody seems to be looking at the repercussions of what the fallback for them is going to be politically on the other side of this. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, people haven’t begun to read it, but when they start parsing individual sections, 2,000 pages of regulations and taxes and incredible obfuscation. It’s the kind of thing that you say, “You can’t be serious.” And yet it seems they are serious, but it’s interesting. This is not bipartisan. And as one senator said, I think Olympia Snowe said, “You’ve got to have bipartisanship for something as massive as this.” You can’t do it with one party alone, one spectrum of the political spectrum, one slice of it. It’s got to be uniform. And it’s not. They don’t have any Republicans in on this thing, because it is too radical. I can’t understand it. Well, if Newt Gingrich is right, what he says basically is, “This is part of their takeover of the government.” And what they want to do is socialize large swathes of the American industry and American enterprise. And they’re going to do whatever it takes, regardless of the election. Well, there will be an election. The election is coming up next fall. And many, many, many of those people will not be in Congress after the vote. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. BIG BUDGET BILL LEE WEBB: And Pat, if health care has you reeling, listen to this story. The Senate has sent a massive 1.1 trillion dollar spending bill to President Obama. That bill includes more money for a large part of the federal government and it adds up to a 12 percent funding increase, far above inflation. Republicans say the bill includes nearly four billion dollars of pork barrel spending on more than 5,000 local projects. All but three Democrats voted for the bill, and all but three Republicans, Pat, opposed it. PAT ROBERTSON: It’s unbelievable. Once again, they’re out of touch with reality. The economy is reeling. The American people are trying to pull back their spending to increase savings and to get more fiscally responsible. The government just goes on like there’s no tomorrow. TERRY MEEUWSEN: When in fact, government should be leading the way and setting an example for that. PAT ROBERTSON: I think this will take—they’re also going to raise the federal deficit. It used to be they would raise it by a billion dollars or 10 billion or something. Now, they’re going to raise it possibly by as much as two trillion dollars, go from 12 to 14 trillion. Those numbers are just incredible. Lee. ACORN FUNDING LEE WEBB: Pat, the controversial community organizing group known as ACORN is getting its federal funding back. A federal judge in New York ruled the government’s move to cut off funding to ACORN was unconstitutional. District Judge Nina Gershon decided it’s in the public's interest for the organization to continue receiving federal funding. Congress voted to cut ACORN’s funding after undercover videos showed the group committing tax fraud. ACORN has also been dogged by allegations of voter registration fraud and embezzlement. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: How does a federal district judge say what’s in the public interest in terms of the way money is allocated? That is not the job of the judiciary. We do have a Constitution. And I do hope that the administration or someone will appeal this ruling, take it up higher. This is an outrage, to say that it’s unconstitutional to cut off funds to a radical group? Since when? This is what Congress is there for, and they did a worthy thing to say, “We don’t want to give these people any more money.” They don’t have to give funding to every leftwing group in America. I don’t understand what this judge is thinking. But today it’s kind of like what are any of them thinking? Lee. DRINKING AND BREAST CANCER LEE WEBB: Even moderate drinking boosts a woman’s chance of having a recurrence of breast cancer. MedPage Today reports that just a few glasses of wine or cocktails a week may increase the risk by up to 34 percent. The new study also shows breast cancer survivors who drink any type of alcohol heavily increase their risk of dying by 51 percent. Researchers at Kaiser Permanente say cutting back on drinking is one of the easiest ways women can help prevent a recurrence of cancer. IRAN’S NUCLEAR TRIGGER LEE WEBB: New top secret intelligence documents show Iran is working on a key final component of a nuclear bomb. The London Sunday Times reports the paper documents Iran’s most sensitive military nuclear project. It outlines a four-year plan to test the trigger device on a bomb called a “neutron initiator.” That device can only be used in a nuclear weapon. And the documents are from early 2007. That’s a full four years after Iran said it was suspending its weapons program, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: They lie. They lie. They lie in public. They lie in private. They are not honorable, honest people. The thing that we’re facing, though, is within Iran there is a growing movement. There is a virtual revolution going on against the mullahs. These students and many businessmen and others want to overthrow that wretched regime and bring freedom to Iran. So what will happen, though, if there is some kind of a strike against their nuclear facilities. We’re caught in what you’d call a rock and a hard place. We’re not quite sure what to do with it. And as it is, Israel is probably going to be the one to do the job. And what is Israel going to do? But a neutron initiator, that’s the trigger of an atomic bomb. This isn’t what you do for peaceful nuclear power. We’re all for them having nuclear power, but not nuclear explosives. Lee. SUMMERS: RECESSION OVER LEE WEBB: The White House’s top economic advisor now says the recession is over and that the economy should start generating jobs as soon as this spring. Lawrence Summers says that’s just not the White House’s forecasting, but also top private sector economists, as well. GRAPHIC: ABC/ “THIS WEEK” Lawrence Summers (Dir. White House Nat’l Econ. Council): Forget what we say. Most professional forecasters are now looking for a return to job growth by spring. LEE WEBB: Some forecasters caution that it will still be a while, though, before Main Street begins to feel the effects of an economic recovery. Do you agree with Summers, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I think so. Larry is a pretty good guy, and I think he probably got good sources to make this statement. But it may be a bit optimistic. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think. It can’t come soon enough, however. Well, today is Money Monday, and up next, capitalism is getting blamed for the great recession. GRAPHIC: STEVE FORBES Steve Forbes debunks that bad rap, when we come back. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: KURT AND BRENDA WARNER LEE WEBB: Coming up later, NFL gunslinger Kurt Warner goes for the Hail Mary . . . . If I never see you again, I totally understand. LEE WEBB: Meet the teammate that got him back in the game. Brenda Warner: We would honestly either argue about Jesus or we would decided that night to make out. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA WAVES Pat Boone: The best investment of the new millennium: gold. Waves of change can destroy financial castles built on sand. But true wealth is built on a solid foundation of gold. Today’s economic crises have caused many to look to government for financial solutions, but experts warn that borrowing trillions will result in higher inflation and less money in your pocket. Gold offers protection, liquidity and growth. Rebuild your financial peace of mind starting with a golden foundation. The economy shrank six percent a year ago, and capitalism has been getting the lion’s share of the blame. FORBES SET-UP DALE HURD: Massive spending by the Obama Administration, corporate bailouts for companies deemed “too big to fail,” and greedy ponzi schemes have Americans questioning if the US has outgrown capitalism. A year after the stock market crash, capitalism continues to get the blame for causing what may be the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. But authors Steve Forbes and Elizabeth Ames say don't blame capitalism. Blame the bad rap given to capitalism for the world's economic troubles. In their new book, How Capitalism Will Save Us, they say more government is not the answer, that government solutions historically reduce prosperity, lower living standards and benefit small sectors of society. Instead of catering to the people, government regulations cater to political interests. Ames and Forbes say without free-market capitalism, Americans face a new normal, a life without prosperity, fairness or choice. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS FOCUS GUEST: STEVE FORBES PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Steve Forbes joins us now from New York. Steve, interesting book. I’m not sure about the theological implications of the title, but nevertheless, it’s very intriguing. Tell me what’s driving this. You talk at length in here about Adam Smith and the invisible hand in the marketplace. What about it? Steve Forbes: Well, the moral basis of capitalism is that you don’t succeed unless you serve the needs and wants of other people. It has to be based in morality, a strong sense of right and wrong, but with sensible rules of the road, allowing free people to take risks, start new businesses, expand existing businesses, come up with new products and services. That’s how we move ahead. That’s how we get a higher standard of living and more opportunity for more people. If you look at the great economic disasters, including this one, we found that they have government, growing government, intrusive government, as the origins, especially the federal reserve, which has been on a money printing binge for several years. Now. PAT ROBERTSON: You have a section in here that’s very intriguing toward the end of the book. You read it and you think Obama is doing everything that you all said would hurt the economy. How do we dig our way out of this enormous debt hole we’re creating? Steve Forbes: Well, the only way we’re going to dig out of it is first of all stop the binge spending. These stimulus plans, Pat, are the equivalent of taking a bucket of water from one end of a pool, pouring it into the next end with a little bit of evaporation in between. Governments do not create wealth. We need a strong and stable dollar instead of the government treating it like a piece of confetti. We need lower tax rates, not higher tax rates. We don’t need to nationalize the health care system, we need more patient control of the health care system. No more forced unionization, no more cap and trade, basic things like that, and you’ll see the American economy come roaring back. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the Congress has just passed a pork laden bill that has some of the most outrageous items of spending in it. And they’re talking about pushing the debt ceiling up to, I think it’s 14 trillion dollars. What about what they’re doing, just finished doing yesterday? Steve Forbes: Well, that’s why the recovery will get some economic growth next year, but it’s not going to be the kind of vigorous comeback that we had in the early 1980s when Ronald Reagan killed the great inflation of the 1970s as we’ll recall, and also reduced tax rates at a strong foreign policy, rebuilt our national defenses, and America surprised the so-called experts by coming back stronger than ever before. So we know what works, and clearly free people and free markets work, not more government takeover. What we see in Washington today is really a form of neosocialism. They’re trying to take over the banks, the auto industry, insurance companies, even banks that don’t owe money to the government. They want to now tell them, the Federal Reserve wants to tell them what they can pay people. That’s not the way to true, lasting prosperity. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, they use the term investment as opposed to spending, but they think that taxes, somehow they can tax the rich and we can pay for it. What is the effect of high taxes? You go into it in the book at some length. Steve Forbes: Well, high taxes are a price and a burden. Think of this way: the tax you pay in income is the price you pay for working. Tax on profits is the price you pay for being successful. Tax on capital gain is the price you pay for taking risks that work out. The idea is a very simple one. When you lower the price of good things, like productive work, risk taking success, you get more of them. Raise the price, you get less of them. And yet, they’re raising the price, especially this horrible healthcare they’re trying to ram through, which will just wreak havoc in health care and in the rest of the economy, especially for small businesses. PAT ROBERTSON: There is going to be an election next fall. Have we got enough time, do you think, to right the ship before it runs aground? Steve Forbes: I think so. America has always come back from disasters in the past, whether it was the 1930s or the terrible decade, malaise decade, of the 1970s. We do eventually get it right, a free people. We do rediscover basic principles, basic values and get things right. So I think that what you saw this summer with tea parties, with town hall meetings, what you saw in Virginia and New Jersey, my home state, and the last month’s elections show the American people instinctively understand something is profoundly wrong here, things like trashing the dollar. That’s like putting too much fuel in a car, of wrecking the fuel injector, flooding the engine. Those kind of things never work. And Washington is a slow learner on those things. But the American people I think will take action, direct action. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Steve, you’ve been a voice for reason. We appreciate you, of Forbes magazine. And this, ladies and gentlemen, about capitalism. It’s an interesting defense of free market economy and the invisible hand of the consumers, the many people who make up economic decisions. Steve, thank you very much for being with us. Steve Forbes: Pat, thank you. Appreciate it. PAT ROBERTSON: Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, up next, NFL superstar Kurt Warner and his wife, Brenda. Brenda Warner: We knew what we believed before the NFL gave us millions of dollars. So when the millions of dollars, that’s not who defines us. TERRY MEEUWSEN: See how this famous couple met and what’s kept them together through 20 years and seven kids. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2: NEWSMAX SARAH PALIN Announcer: Sarah Palin has captured our attention and electrified America. And his romance with his beautiful wife, Brenda, reads like a movie script. Recently, sports reporter Shawn Brown talked with Kurt and Brenda about the journey that’s taken them both to the top. KURT AND BRENDA WARNER SHAWN BROWN: Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Kurt Warner is regarded as one of the best to ever play the game. He’s been to the Super Bowl three times, winning Super Bowl XLIII with the St. Louis Rams. Statistically, the four-time Pro Bowler is the second most accurate quarterback in the history of the NFL. In the 2008 season he led the Cardinals to their very first Super Bowl appearance. But that’s just one side of Kurt’s story. The other side began over 20 years ago when he met his wife, Brenda. He was a struggling quarterback, and she was a single mom with two kids. Kurt Warner: One of the first times I’d ever gone to the bar, I wasn’t much into it, but my roommates kind of pulled me out to the bar. And I just noticed her from across the room, short, brown, spiky hair with the miniskirt on and the red boots and dancing up a storm out there. SHAWN BROWN: The two hit it off, and at the end of the night, Kurt tried to kiss her. And though Brenda was interested in him, she felt she needed to tell him about her situation. Brenda Warner: He leaned over to kiss me, and I thought, “Seriously, I’m not playing a game. So I’m 25, divorced, mother of two. If I never see you again, I totally understand.” SHAWN BROWN: The next day Kurt paid her a visit, and he was met at the door by her two-year-old son Zack. Kurt Warner: I went over there I guess to see her, but really the whole encounter was about her kids. I said hello, walked in the door and immediately saw her kids. Her son Zachary grabbed me by the hand, started leading me around the house. SHAWN BROWN: Zack warmed up to Kurt almost immediately, and it didn’t seem to matter to Kurt that Zack was blind. And that made quite an impression on Brenda who was watching them with her infant daughter, Jesse, in her arms. Brenda Warner: There are things that are deal breakers, and those are kind of deal makers, where Zachary took his hand. Being blind, he didn’t know who Kurt was walking in, but he just knew it was somebody new. And he walked in, laid on the floor with Zachary, wrestled him. I sat Jesse down, and he just interacted with the kids. And I thought, “This is something different.” SHAWN BROWN: Kurt's and Brenda’s relationship grew. But Kurt’s football career wasn’t going well. He tried out with the Green Bay Packers, but going up against the likes of Brett Favre and Trent Dilfer didn’t help. He was cut before the season even started. And now with no job and no money, he moved into Brenda’s parents' basement and got a job that only paid him $5.50 an hour. Kurt Warner: I took the infamous job of working nights at a grocery store. And it was. So much of life is about pride. And here I am living in her parents’ basement without a job, and I’m just thinking, “Gosh, this isn’t me. This isn’t what I do. I don’t want to be just kind of taking from everybody else and not giving anything.” SHAWN BROWN: Kurt and Brenda had a great relationship, but there were some things they didn’t see eye to eye on, especially when it came to having a relationship with God. Brenda Warner: He would tell me some detail, and I’d say, “Well, show me that in the Bible. If you think that that’s your core of your spiritual belief, show me.” So we would honestly either argue about Jesus or we would decide that night to make out that night. It was one or the other. And that was our dating process. And kind of weird. He preferred to make out. I preferred to argue about Jesus, until he finally got it. SHAWN BROWN: What was it that you believed? Was what you believed in, was it right or you just didn’t know where to find it? Kurt Warner: I think I just believed in the story. I understood the story. I understood that Jesus died on the cross. I always use the reference that He was kind of like my spare tire, that up to that point I was driving. I was in control, and if I ever needed Him, I could jump back in the back and grab my spare tire, and He could help me out in whatever trying time that was. SHAWN BROWN: Kurt and Brenda grew even closer, and Kurt felt the pressure to make enough money to marry and to have a family. So in 1995, he joined the Arena Football League with the Iowa Barnstormers. And when he did, he got more than he bargained for when his teammates invited him to a Bible study. Kurt Warner: It was in that process where I started to realize I really had no idea why I believed what I believed. So I thought, “Okay, they’re asking me these questions. I’m going to figure out some answers for them. I’m going to start reading the Bible, and I’m going to find out why I believe what I believe.” And it was in that process where, as you open the Bible and you read the scriptures, it’s obvious that it’s all about Jesus, and it’s all about what He did on the cross, and it’s all about giving your life to Him. And so in the process of trying to prove everybody around me wrong, I ultimately proved them all right. SHAWN BROWN: Kurt realized he needed to make a change. Then, Brenda had received news that her parents were killed when a tornado hit their town in Arkansas. Brenda Warner: I was hurting so much, and yet he was there to just listen and not judge me, and also be there for Jesse and Zach, my kids, because they lost their grandparents. Kurt Warner: I wasn’t playing well on the football field. Her parents were killed. It was right around that time where I’d came to the realization that I needed to commit my life to Jesus. SHAWN BROWN: During their grief, Kurt gave his life to the Lord. And when he did, things began to change. He and Brenda married. And after leading the Barnstormers to two consecutive Arena Bowl appearances, he was offered a chance to play in the NFL Europe League for the Amsterdam Admirals. Then in 1998, Kurt’s dream to play in the NFL was realized when he signed with the St. Louis Rams. (Interviewing): What changed? Kurt Warner: What changed was that I no longer was looking at me, and I began looking at everybody around me, and specifically looking at what God wanted for me. That was a complete change for me. I realized that it wasn’t about me. That if it works out in the NFL, it’s because God wants me there, and it’s for me to do something for Him. SHAWN BROWN (Reporting): Kurt spent six seasons with the Rams. And after a season with the New York Giants, he moved on the Arizona Cardinals where he’s still making his mark as one of the game’s best. But that pales to his role as husband and father of seven. He and Brenda have written book about their life together entitled First Things First, with the underlining message of staying focused on God. Brenda Warner: I had death hit me. I had divorce hit me. I had infidelity. I had a special needs child be affected. You don’t know what’s ahead. It’s a fallen world. So I encourage people to see that if you build that foundation, then that’s what matters. Just like our marriage. We knew what we believed before the NFL gave us millions of dollars. So when the millions of dollars come, that’s not who defines us. The NFL doesn’t. The popularity, the fame and fortune. We had that foundation built beforehand. Kurt Warner: It doesn’t mean everything is going to be perfect, and I think that’s what people get the sense of when, okay, they see Kurt and they know his story, and Kurt and Brenda and the seven kids, and everything is just perfect. And that’s a huge part of this book is that it’s not perfect. Her life, she’s gone through struggles. I’ve gone through struggles. We still battle together. We struggle raising kids, but the thing like she said is that we always know that God is with us and God is leading us. And God is going to work it together no matter where we screw up. I don’t know how we do it without Him. I don’t know. I think back to years when I tried to do it by myself, and I think about my life now. And I think about marriage and seven kids, and I’m just thinking, “There is no way I could figure this out and be successful by myself,” that I know it’s all about Jesus, and that’s why we are what we are. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT MINISTERS SALVATION PAT ROBERTSON: “I tried to do it by myself.” Is that your testimony? Do you try to do it by yourself? If you’re facing a problem, you try to answer it by yourself. You try to reason things out yourself. You try to overcome the obstacles yourself. There is a disease. You try to fix it yourself. You know something? God Almighty can take these problems. We used to sing a song, you take them to the Lord and leave them there. Can you take your problems to the Lord and leave them there? What are you carrying? What’s your burden? Single mother. What is your burden? I’m sure it’s excruciating. Some people are watching this program in other lands besides America, where subsistence is very difficult. And you have so much that is hurting. You know something? The Lord Himself said, “Come unto Me all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I’ll give you rest. I’ll give you rest. I’ll give you rest. I’ll take your burden away from you. You don’t have to do it all on your own. I will be with you. I will uphold you. I have born and I will carry. Even until grey hairs I’ll take you.” Would you like that in your life? Would you like Him in your life? Would you like to know something wonderful? Kurt and Brenda have found the answer. Would you like that answer? The answer, I’m sure, is going to be yes. And if it is, I want to pray with you and lead you in a prayer. Ask Him. Ask Him, and He will do it. Bow your head, wherever you are. Pray these words. Don’t be afraid. Pray these words. “Jesus.” That’s right. Pray with me. “Jesus, I know that you are the Son of God. I know that you have risen from the grave and that you sit at the right hand of God the Father. And I know that you have all power. And so I come to you now, Lord, and I bring you myself, and I bring you my problems, and I bring you the situations that surround me, and I say Lord Jesus, now, come into my life. Live your life in me. Take over. From this moment on, I am yours.” Now, if you prayed with me just then, the Lord has heard, and the Lord will answer. Now, I want to pray for you, if you prayed with me. Father, for those who prayed, may the power and the anointing of the Holy Spirit rest upon them. Come into their lives. Fill them with your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen. It’s the most important decision you ever made. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM You have decided to start an adventure. Take a look. SET-UP PIECE SHAWN BROWN: Robby McGee was newly married and living his dreams as an award winning musician and songwriter, until a diving accident changed Robby’s life forever. Robby McGee: I found myself paralyzed from the chest down in a hospital bed with the real possibility of never being able to walk again. SHAWN BROWN: But just a year after his accident, Robby was able to walk again and even return to music. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Before we visit with Robby, let’s listen as he plays a song from his CD called Reaching for Christmas. Here is Robby Benson called “O Come All Ye Faithful.” ROBBY PLAYS “O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: ROBBY MCGEE TERRY MEEUWSEN: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Robby McGee: Thank you. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I said Robby Benson. Robby McGee. I don’t know what that’s about. Robby McGee: I don’t know. Robby McGee works. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Tell me about what your life was like before your accident. Robby McGee: It was wonderful. Everything that I had worked for up to that point in my life, God was helping me to achieve. We had just been offered a recording agreement with Word Records, who was the largest Christian music record company at that time. I had begun to have some success as a songwriter. I had been married for about three years. Life was wonderful. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, tell me about the accident and what happened, because it was such an odd and unexpected experience you went through. Robby McGee: It was. I had been on the road quite a bit, so my wife and I decided to take a little bit of a vacation. So we went down to Panama City, Florida. And I had been diving since I was about 14 years old. TERRY MEEUWSEN: So you were knowledgeable about what you were doing. Robby McGee: Right. Right. So I decided that we were going to incorporate a little diving, me and a friend of mine, while my wife and her friend went shopping. So we went out that day on the boat. And I began to experience a little numbness when I was coming up from the dive. And within a matter of getting back onto the boat, in about 10 seconds I was totally paralyzed from the chest down. TERRY MEEUWSEN: No way. What went through your mind at that moment? Robby McGee: To be honest with you, I don’t really remember a lot. It took about two hours for them to get me back to the shore. And when I got back to the shore, I knew that there was something wrong. I didn’t know to the degree of what was wrong. And the doctors actually said, “Within a few days, you should be fine.” But a few days went by, and it wasn’t fine. But I still wasn’t worried. I’m like, “God can handle this. He can do anything.” So they flew me back to Little Rock, Arkansas, checked me in a rehab. But I wanted to get back there because I’m like, “Just get me back there. Let me get to my home church. The Bible says to get the elders, anoint me with oil, pray for me. This is no problem. Everything is going to be fine. My faith was very high at that point. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Sometimes in the beginning, it’s easy for faith to be high, when people are rallying around you. And then as time goes on, did you have a dark night of the soul where you thought, “Wow, what’s this about?” Robby McGee: Absolutely. After about four months in the hospital with very little change, I got to the point one night where I remember I was in the hospital bed, and I began to get frustrated with God. I’m like, “God, I’ve done my part. I’ve done everything that I know to do, and you’re not holding up your end of the bargain.” And people are like, “Wow, I can’t believe you said that.” And I’m like, “Well, it’s not that He didn’t know I didn’t think that.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: “I spoke what He already knows,” right? Robby McGee: Absolutely. Absolutely. So I just cried out to God, and I said, “I just need to know that you are hearing my prayers.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: And what did God say to you? Robby McGee: He really spoke peace to my heart, and He said, “Look, if you need to walk again to fulfill My purpose for your life, you’ll walk. If you need to sing, you’ll sing. If you need to play, you’ll play. If you need to have kids, you’ll have kids. Everything you need to accomplish My perfect will for you life, I’m going to make that happen.” And nothing changed at that point, except something inside. I had the peace of God, and I knew at that point everything was going to be all right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: So how did you begin to walk again? Robby McGee: Well, when I left the rehab hospital, they had gotten me a wheelchair. And they began to teach me how to get around on forearm crutches. And I just continued to do everything that I could do, continued to pray, continued to believe. But the hope that was placed in me that night let me know that God was going to make that happen. If I needed that to happen, He was going to make it happen. And I believed that He was going to do that. So it was a process over about 12 months. So within a 1-month period, after God really spoke peace to my heart, I began to walk again, began to sing again, began to play again, and we had our first son. So God was faithful through all of that. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And I have to say, you are amazing. I was with Robby recently on the trip to Turkey and Greece, and you tromped through the ruins of Ephesus with more chutzpah than half the people on that trip. It was amazing. What has God done in your character and in you, Robby, that wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t gone through this? Robby McGee: I think at that point in my life, I realized that everything that I did needed to purposely be about reaching other people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So I tell people all the time, it just didn’t change the way that I walk and the way that I look at life. It changed the reason that I walk. It changed the reason that I play. It changed the reason that I sing. And it gave me an incredibly different outlook on my son and how I wanted to dedicate him to God and make sure that I did everything I could to instill in him the Godly values and help him to become the man of God that he has become today. TERRY MEEUWSEN: We’re talking about God has restored your ability to walk, and you have a ministry called Soul Walk. Tell me about that. What is that? Robby McGee: I was on an overseas trip in India back in 2005. And I was just praying, “God, just give me ideas on how I can reach more people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” because I looked around when I was in India and I saw so many people who were just hungry for the Gospel. So that’s been one of my prayers. “God, show me ways to reach people.” And right before I went to India, someone had approached me and asked me if I would sponsor them in a walk that they were walking in, and I said, “Absolutely.” And God just dropped on my heart: “Who is walking for souls?” And so I went back from the trip to the United States, and I began to look and try to find a walk that was organizing people to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and I couldn’t find one. So we started a walk called Soul Walk, and it has been phenomenal. It’s been in Nashville, Tennessee. We’re actually starting to do it nationally now. And the last one in Nashville, Tennessee, there were over 1,500 people, and they got together and they walked and prayed for their family and their friends, and then raised support to where we can reach people in other countries with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s wonderful. Robby McGee: And over 280,000 people have accepted Christ through Soul Walk since we started it, so it’s been amazing. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow, God has got a plan. Robby McGee: Absolutely. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Your CD is called Reaching for Christmas. And I know in this crazy, hectic world that we live in, for lots of us—I’m sure it’s like this for many of you who are watching today—but there’s just the chaotic pace of life, and I listen to your music coming into work, I listen to it going home from work, because it just kind of settles my soul when I’m listening to it. You heard about Superbook and what we’re trying to do in reaching children around the world through that. And you said, “I want to do something to make a difference.” You’re using your CD to do that. Robby McGee: Absolutely. I don’t believe that God does things by accident. And I’ve been talking about recording a Christmas CD for probably 10 years. And in October of this year I finally said, “I’m going into the studio, and I’m going to do that.” Well, right after I recorded the project, I saw the new Superbooks, and I was just totally blown away by them. And I saw in the Superbooks that one of them was Christmas. And God just dropped it in my heart, because I made the decision a long time ago that every talent that I had I was going to use to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And I thought, “How cool would it be if I could use this Reaching for Christmas CD to fund Superbook and the Christmas Superbook to reach people with the Gospel message?” And God dropped in my heart, “Use the proceeds from that to make that happen.” So I came back. I got the CD ready, and it’s been awesome. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we’re happy to announce to you that is ready today. Robby’s CD is called Reaching for Christmas. GRAPHIC: FOR YOUR GIFT OF $10 OR MORE 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM And for a gift of 10 dollars or more, we’re going to send it to you. The proceeds from that will go to CBN’s Superbook project. When we reach their parents, we reach a city. When we reach cities, we begin to impact a nation. So be a part of it. Do you think one is better than the other?” PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Judy, the local bank may not give you a loan. So a mortgage company, that’s why it’s better, you can get the money. TERRY MEEUWSEN: For starters. PAT ROBERTSON: For starters. If you have a bad credit rating, you have to have pristine credit, good income and all the rest of it to get a bank loan, whereas the mortgage company is a little bit more lenient. They may charge higher fees. But now I understand some of them are competing with one another to see if they can’t place loans, so you might get a good deal. But that’s the principle difference. The lending standards aren’t as rigorous as they are with a bank. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Reese, who says, “My grandmother usually gives me a fairly sizeable check for Christmas and tells me to get whatever I want. Rather than using it to buy the latest tech toy like I usually do, I thought about investing it. What would you recommend to a rookie investor?” PAT ROBERTSON: I think I’d start, given the state of things today, I’d start with a gold ETF, exchange traded fund. They used to be called street tracks. They’ve got various names. But they actually hold gold and they sell price their shares as if it were one-tenth of an ounce of gold. So if gold is selling for, say, 1,200 dollars, then a share would cost 120 dollars. So however much money you’ve got, get that many shares. And that would be a start. There are a lot of other things I could recommend to you, but you say that’s the one big purchase, so try that one and then build on that. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay. This is Jan, who says, “I’m trying to cut costs on my heating bill by turning down the thermostat, but I hate feeling cold. A friend suggested that my house would feel warmer if I kept it humidified. Would a humidifier be a good investment?” PAT ROBERTSON: From what I understand, Jan, the answer is yes. It keeps your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. There’s a perception, dry air is a little more rigorous. And the moist air has a tendency to make you feel warmer. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Better for your furniture, too. PAT ROBERTSON: A lot better. Yes. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It is. Really. PAT ROBERTSON: Otherwise, the dry heat will crack your doors and all the rest. All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is from Barbara, who says, “I need to set up a financial and health power of attorney. Do I need to go through a lawyer to do that?” PAT ROBERTSON: Brenda, I think so. But I wonder what that financial power of attorney you’re talking about. But I definitely think on that one you need a lawyer. I just don’t understand what it is you’re doing. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Just to be sure you’ve done it right. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes. But if you really know what it is, you can do it yourself. But I’m a little scared to say I need to do this. Why do you need one? What is it? Are you planning to get sick? Do you think you’re ill? Are you in a nursing home? What’s the deal? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it’s either her or someone else, maybe. It could be a parent or something that she’s helping. I don’t know. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, it could be one of them. But you need to know what the need is and how much money is involved and all the rest of it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Ed, who says, “I’m a grandfather and thought about taking out a life insurance policy on my new grandson. Someone suggested it as a way to save for college expenses. What do you think?” PAT ROBERTSON: Ed, I don’t know whether you’re insuring you in favor of your grandson or you’re going to put a policy—the way it’s said, “I’m going to policy on him.” Well, I don’t know why you’d want a policy on a newborn. TERRY MEEUWSEN: You mean life insurance, setting up a life that would accrue over the years or something? PAT ROBERTSON: It doesn’t make any sense. You can save it yourself and do a whole lot better if you have disciplined saving. You don’t have to pay brokerage costs and sales commissions and all the rest of it. So I just don’t understand what you’re doing. On the other hand, if you insure yourself and when you die the money goes to your grandchild, that’s a different matter. And yes, of course, you’d want life insurance. What else?” TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Suzette, who says, “You suggested that college students check out educational grants. Where can I find out about those? And does it matter what I major in?” PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t think so. But why don’t you go to your college that you’re looking for and ask? Any college can give you—and there are books that cover these things. And there are also grants specific for, Regent, for example, for all those people who come from Melfa or whatever. Some wealthy person may have set up a scholarship fund and nobody is asking for it. So there are books. But ask your college, the one that you’re interested, if they would give the literature. They have it, and they can give it to you. All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay. This is Mary, who says, “Dear Pat, I’m having trouble finding out how to invest in a euro mutual fund. Do you have any comments or advice?” PAT ROBERTSON: Well, sure. Here, again, ask a broker. A mutual fund would be shares. So there are a number of mutual funds that deal with companies that are trading in euros. They’re from Sweden or Germany or someplace in the European bloc. And you can find a whole list of them. Somebody like Fidelity could give you information about that if that’s what you’re looking for. But that’s what I think you’re talking about. Well, we leave you today with these words from Acts 20, quote . . . . GRAPHIC: Acts 20:35 “It is more blessed to give than receive.” (NKJV) . . . . “It is more blessed to give than receive.” We’re coming up on Christmas. Lots of people are giving. And let me remind you and encourage you, let your best gift be to Jesus. We’ll see you tomorrow. Bye, bye.
