The 700 Club Daily Broadcast
Thursday, November 19, 2009
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. We’ve got a special for you today, an exclusive interview with CBN News. Sarah Palin talked in depth about her Christian faith, trying to forgive her enemies and her new book, which everybody has been talking about, called Going Rogue.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, her book’s tour began in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where CBN News White House correspondent David Brody sat down the former vice presidential candidate.
PALIN
Crowd: Palin! Palin! Palin!
DAVID BRODY: The chanting started 24 hours before Sarah Palin even arrived here in Grand Rapids. These people were first in line.
Woman: We’re freaking out.
Woman: Yes, she’s my hero.
DAVID BRODY: Hours later, the line ballooned to more than 1,000, some driving hours for a chance to see the woman they call Sarah.
Woman: I just think she represents the average American woman.
Woman: And I believe the Spirit of God dwells in that woman. I believe that that’s what makes her different.
DAVID BRODY (Interviewing): I notice that you have Trig with you.
Sarah Palin: Yes.
DAVID BRODY: But before the big book signing, Palin spoke with CBN News over at Zondervan Publishing, the Christian press company promoting her book. So far, the media has focused on the juicy campaign tidbits contained in Going Rogue, but inside you can't go more than a few pages without reading about God's influence in her life, whether it be her miscarriage, her Down syndrome son or praying with little daughter Piper before the vice presidential debate.
Sarah Palin (Former VP Candidate): How in the world would I sum up my life except to say, “God, I have at the end of the day really nothing but my faith, my reliance on you, Lord.” And I wanted to articulate that.
DAVID BRODY: She writes about giving her life to the Lord as a little six-year-old girl at Bible camp in Alaska.
Sarah Palin: Knowing even back then that it is a step that one can take to show the rest of the world that I'm not shy about this. I am going to let the world know that this is my foundation and this, my reliance is going to be on my faith in God.
DAVID BRODY: A firm proclamation is found throughout this book that actually ends with Palin asking people to invite God into their lives.
Sarah Palin: My very last paragraph there sums it up and invites people, encourages people to do what I did, and that's put their life in God's hands, our Creator who knows probably better than we know what the perfect path is for a person. So God being so extremely important, my faith is to my life, I wasn't going to be hesitant at all to let people know what I believe.
DAVID BRODY: It's that tell-it-like-it-is talk that has her fans going gaga. After our interview, with baby Trig in hand, she was mobbed by Zondervan employees. Such is life for this big fish from Alaska. “Going Rogue with Sarah” is the theme of the bus tour. And as the matter of fact, that is the exact sign on the bus. As a matter of fact, they have a moose on the front of the bus, an actual picture of a moose. Where are you ever going to see that? While Palin can do no wrong with her supporters, the polls show she has some work to do if she wants to run for President. She has a 43 percent favorability rating, 53 percent wouldn't vote for her for President, and 60 percent say she's just not qualified. (Interviewing): When you see polls like that, what is your reaction? What do you make of those polls?
Sarah Palin: Oh, I think, well, if I read and believed everything that's been written about me, too, I'd say the same thing. That's why I want people to read my book, so they can read unfiltered what my values are, what my record is, what my accomplishments are.
DAVID BRODY (Reporting): The Associated Press devoted an 11-member team to fact check Palin's book and claims it is filled with untruths and embellishments. Nevertheless, it’s already a bestseller. For Palin, this tour is a chance to redefine herself in key political venues like Fort Wayne, Indiana, Cincinnati, Ohio, Roanoke, Virginia, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and the retirement villages near Orlando, Florida. Palin knows whatever road she eventually takes will present challenges, such as being part of a group of politicians held to a double standard.
Sarah Palin: But I do absolutely notice that some of the conservative Christians who are members of Congress are serving in state legislatures. Yes, it seems like certainly like the leftist media treats them a little bit different. There are some double standards. It gets kind of frustrating, but at the same time I think it makes us work harder. I think it forces us to be clearer and more articulate in what our positions are.
DAVID BRODY: And it also forces her to pray for her enemies, like the people who spread nasty rumors about her family during the campaign.
Sarah Palin: My mama’s heart breaks when the kids are attacked. So it is through a lot of prayer and a lot of reliance on prayer warriors all across our country, though, praying God’s hand of protection over my kids. These are political potshots. I remind my kinds, these are probably some lonely people, some shallow people, who want to take a shot like that, and we need to pray for these people, for one, and we also need to keep things in perspective.
DAVID BRODY: And speaking of perspective, it is Palin’s view that life is not as a bunch of coincidences, rather it is all God ordained. Palin wants readers to seek after God.
Sarah Palin: Give it a shot. Put your life in God's hands and see what He's going to do for you, and He will reveal for you, too, these providential happenings throughout your life that surely cannot be coincidences.
DAVID BRODY (Reporting): You realize when you say things like that, the liberal media, people within the liberal media, they’re going to blow a gasket.
Sarah Palin: Okay, this is what’s going to happen, too. CBN, you guys are going to be Googled all over the place.
DAVID BRODY: Oh, goodness gracious.
Sarah Palin: And the liberal media will take things out of context. So let’s just kind of acknowledge what’s going to happen here. Their heads are going to be spinning. So be it, though. Let's get some truth out there. Let's get some candid talk about a person's faith. That's part of what I'm all about, and I don't hesitate to let people know where I am on it.
DAVID BRODY (Reporting): And that may be the understatement of the year. The shackles of 2008 are off. Sarah Palin, on tour and unplugged, and it's standing room only. David Brody, CBN News, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, she’ll be the frontrunner, I guess, in the Republican Party, she and Tim Pawlenty. Of course, the governor . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And Huckabee I think is up there, too.
PAT ROBERTSON: Huckabee is coming along, and Mitt Romney is coming along. So it’s going to be amazing. But she sure has a lot of crowd appeal. And this is one gorgeous cover. This picture of her is unbelievable.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s a very pretty book. Yes.
PAT ROBERTSON: For somebody who has written some books that . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, I think she has tapped into one thing that is definitely on the hearts of many, many Americans . . . .
PAT ROBERTSON: What’s that?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: . . . . and that is let’s get past the junk to the stuff that matters.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that certainly makes a lot of sense. But we appreciate it. We’ll have part two of David’s interview with Sarah Palin on The 700 Club tomorrow. She’ll talk about the 2008 presidential campaign and important political issues, such as health care and abortion. Lee, very interesting.
CARE
LEE WEBB: Fascinating story by David Brody and fascinating interview. Battle lines have been drawn over the Senate's new health care bill. It’s 2,074 pages long, and critics say it will cost far more than its 849 billion dollar price tag. John Jessup has the story from Washington.
JOHN JESSUP: Senior Democrats introduced their health care plan as nothing short of history in the making.
Sen. Harry Reid ([D-NV] Majority Leader): Tonight begins the last leg of this journey that we have been on now for some time.
JOHN JESSUP: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s bill would extend coverage to 30 million more Americans at a price tag of nearly 850 billion dollars over the first ten years. The bill would also require most Americans to have health insurance, set up an insurance exchange to lower the cost of buying coverage, and it would create an optional public plan, but states could choose to opt out. Contrary to the House bill, abortions would be included in the public plan and insurance companies that get federal funds could offer abortion coverage. The bill would be paid for by imposing taxes on premium insurance plans, taxing workers making more than 250,000 dollars a year and an increase in Medicare payroll taxes. The bill proposes cuts to Medicare, a decision Senator Reid says will make it stronger.
Sen. Harry Reid: Anytime you have a program, there is fraud, waste and abuse in it. And you get rid of that, and it strengthens the program.
JOHN JESSUP: Even before the bill made its debut, Republicans said no dice.
Sen. John McCain ([R] Arizona): Americans want cost control, and they want affordable and available health care. They don't want increases in taxes. They don't want the government taking over the health care system in American, and that's what is going to be delivered.
JOHN JESSUP: It's not just Republicans standing in the way. A few moderate Democrats could keep the bill from moving forward by withholding their votes and preventing the 60 votes needed to even bring the bill up for debate. Despite the uncertainty, reform supporters are predicting success.
Sen. Tom Harkin ([D] Iowa): We're going get it over the finish line, because failure is not an option.
JOHN JESSUP: John Jessup, CBN News, Washington.
LEE WEBB: Pat, at the end of the day, which way do you think those moderate Democrats will go?
PAT ROBERTSON: If they don’t vote against it, they’re going to be in serious trouble in the next election. I think the people will be up in arms about this thing. It has unintended consequences we can’t believe. And it’s an awful bill. And the thing of it is, over two thousand pages, who has read something like that? Who knows what’s in it? Who knows what are the little hooks and byways that are in this bill and the unintended things that it will do to people. It is unbelievable. And as far as the cost of it, they haven’t begun to estimate the cost properly. It will probably run well over two trillion dollars before it’s finished. They say it will be less than a trillion. But a trillion is an awful lot of money. And we’re thinking about two trillion, and while the economy is gasping. It is gasping. We’ve got over ten percent unemployment, and we’re going to add a series of taxes. We’re going to make it harder for businesses to hire workers. It is going to be a nightmare. And the left wing has got this mantra that they have to have this thing passed. Why? Because it is a standard of their left wing agenda. It is the idea of taking control of large segments of our society, putting them under government control. It’s the step towards socialism, and that’s what they want. And so if it costs some of their seats, that’s tough luck. If it brings about further depression and recession in America, that’s too bad. They’re going to pass this thing come whatever happens. And we just hope that the Senate Republicans have the courage to stand up and say what is needed to tell the American people and then stand firm, because, let’s face it, they have enough votes to stop a steamroller if they will show intestinal fortitude. Lee.
FT. HOOD HEARINGS
LEE WEBB: Pat, the Senate Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees are moving ahead with an investigation into the Fort Hood shootings, that despite the White House telling Congress to slow down its investigation. Reuters reports the administration doesn’t want the hearings to compromise the criminal investigations by the FBI and the Army. But Congress is growing impatient with the seeming lack of cooperation from the administration. Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan shouted, “God is great!” in Arabic as he allegedly killed 13 and wounded more than 30 others. The committees want to know what the Army knew about Hasan and when they knew it.
LEVEE LAWSUITS?
LEE WEBB: A US district judge has ruled that it was the Army Corps of Engineers’ negligence that caused massive flooding after Hurricane Katrina. That may open the door now to billions of dollars in claims against the federal government. The judge said the engineers’ failure to maintain a navigation channel in a portion of the Mississippi River was, quote, “monumental negligence,” and that led to flooding of New Orleans’ lower Ninth Ward and neighboring St. Bernard Parish. Pat.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I was there. And St. Bernard Parish, I saw the devastation and the people who died. I didn’t see them, but I heard of the people who died because of the flooding that came pouring in. And I don’t know whether it’s necessary to blame the Corps of Engineers, but the judge apparently found that was the case. And as our story . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, that opens Pandora’s Box, doesn’t it?
PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, dear me. The amount of lawsuits, it is so excessive it will probably make the asbestos claims look like a kindergarten. It is just amazing what can happen now as the whole government—I don’t know if the government itself is ready for this kind of an onslaught, but it’s going to be brutal. Every home that was damaged, every life that was lost, every piece of jobs that were taken away, people that are unemployed, it can go on and on. The damages can mount exponentially. And you can see those plaintiffs’ lawyers like a flock of vultures just waiting to jump on that.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I don’t even want to think about it.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I presume the Corps of Engineers will appeal that ruling to a higher court. And that was a district judge. It wasn’t the circuit court. I don’t believe it was the circuit court, and it wasn’t the Supreme Court. And I think this is so important that it needs to be reviewed.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, just ahead, future shock is happening right now in Great Britain.
Man: And the half mile between Westminster Cathedral and near where we're sitting and Westminster Abbey, I counted 160 surveillance cameras.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Why the same surveillance could be coming to your city, after this.

LEE WEBB: Coming up later . . . .
Man: The stuff I built was fast, super fast.
LEE WEBB: Fast and furious.
Man: He would twist until somebody’s finger would snap for 1,000 dollars.
LEE WEBB: The night he backed down . . . .
Man: I go, “Well, check it out, dude, I’m not racing.”
LEE WEBB: . . . . and lived to tell about it.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Ronald Reagan once said that the nine most terrifying words in the English language were, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” Today the size of our government is exploding. And if you want to see where big government is taking us, just look across the Atlantic to Great Britain. Dale Hurd has that story from London.
FOCUS: MAKING AMERICA BRITISH
DALE HURD: Wouldn't it be great if America was more like Europe? You might not think so, but someone in Washington apparently does, because a lot of the legislation going through Congress, if passed, could make America look a lot more like a European nation: government run health care, cap and trade energy rationing and a massive overall explosion of government, which means massive government spending, massive government debt and massive government intrusion into your life. It sounds to some people like Britain. One British author says he's seen America's future. It’s here in Britain. And he says our future doesn't work. James Delingpole has written Welcome to Obamaland.
James Delingpole (Author, Welcome to Obamaland): I've seen America's future, because what is happening in America now has been happening in Britain for at least the last 12 years. I've seen my country pretty much ruined by what is essentially a socialist administration presented by this plausible likable guy. And I see the same thing happening in America. And I think America should worry about that.
DALE HURD: Delingpole says America is on the same course toward the kind of sprawling expensive big government that Britain has, one that will suffocate our economy and our freedoms. Britain today is almost a police state. The British people are under more government surveillance than the Chinese. There are cameras everywhere. Dr. Eamonn Butler is director of the Adam Smith Institute in London and author of The Rotten State of Britain.
Eamonn Butler (Author, The Rotten State of Britain): In the half mile between Westminster Cathedral near where we're sitting and Westminster Abbey, I counted 160 surveillance cameras.
DALE HURD: A new government initiative would put cameras in the homes of families considered at risk. Not only that, a new law would mandate that every phone call, e-mail or web site a person visits be stored for a year in case the government wants to take a look at it. There's also a law under consideration that would limit energy use in Britain through an annual carbon allowance. Use too much energy, and you could be fined. And Big Brother is also snooping through the trash. Some local governments are experimenting with smart garbage can sensors that can tell if Brits are, in the opinion of some bureaucrat, throwing away too much.
Eamonn Butler: There's this attempt really to control our lifestyles. All of these things are done with the best of intentions, but in fact you have built up the apparatus of a police state. And if some bad guys got into power, they would have huge power and control over us.
DALE HURD: Britain also has government-run health care, like a lot of Democrats want for America. But Delingpole has a warning.
James Delingpole: I'm not going to try to tell you that the American healthcare system is perfect. What I am going to tell you definitely is do not copy our healthcare system. We call the NHS, our National Health Service, the envy of the world. It's the envy of the third world, maybe. It is a form of health care through almost Stalinist state allocation, health care through rationing.
DALE HURD: The horror stories about care rationing in Britain's National Health Service are many. This British cancer specialist Karol Sikora told us how difficult it can be to get lifesaving medicines if they’re expensive. This woman told us she was denied a pap smear by the NSH and then she developed terminal cervical cancer. Big government isn't just inefficient, it's expensive. And some have declared that the British government has run out of money.
James Delingpole: Well, we are bankrupt. Britain is bankrupt.
Eamonn Butler: The official public debt figure is 47 percent. I think the real figure is probably something like 147 percent, because there is so much of our public debt which doesn't actually appear on the government's books.
DALE HURD: Britain has been here before. It was the sick man of Europe in the 1970s: over-taxed, over-regulated, even needing a bailout from the International Monetary Fund before Margaret Thatcher's fiscal conservatism straightened out the economy. But under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, the size of government ballooned again, and now the bill for Britain's most recent socialist experiment has come due. So is bigger government better government? Some British would tell you that unless you want the government snooping through your trash can some day, it's not something America should strive for. Dale Hurd, CBN News, London.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
PAT ROBERTSON: I’ve seen the future, and it’s horrible, I think. Isn’t that awful?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow.
PAT ROBERTSON: Dale is a pretty good reporter, and he’s over there on the scene.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: He’s an excellent reporter. But we need to consider ourselves forewarned. This is right before our eyes. We’ve been reporting on this for a long time.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s coming. The idea of all those surveillance cameras, the idea of holding people’s e-mails and telephone . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Going through their garbage.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. It’s unreal. What are they thinking about? This was the cradle of the democracy we share. This is where we have the Magna Carta and all the fundamental rights of British law. I can’t understand it. And folks, if you live in the British Isles, it’s time to be aware. Maybe it’s like the frog and the pot. Little by little, the heat is turned up, so you don’t understand what’s happening until suddenly you’re cooked and you’re dead.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Remember the power of the ballot box, right?
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I don’t know if it’s too late to change things or whether there is a real conservative alternative. Right now, the Labor Party is in control. But my goodness gracious, this is frightening, because I like London. I went to school at the University of London. It’s a nice place.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s a beautiful place. Well, the whole country is beautiful. I just think it’s unfortunate, as you said, that its history is one of such strong leadership, and it’s come to this.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I don’t know what’s happening to it, but it’s—anyhow, take a look, folks, if you’re over there, and here, let’s not go that way. Let’s not go that way in America. Terry.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, still ahead, a drag racer who bowed out of the action at the eleventh hour.
Man: Everybody in that parking lot turned on me like a snake in the grass. The guy says, “I didn’t come all the way out here for you to be some little bed wetter, some little thumb sucker that can’t race.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Watch what happened next, on today’s 700 Club.

TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it started with his dad’s dream and 20 dollars. And because of that, today Dr. Carlos Campo is living a dream of his own, on the campus of Regent University.
CARLOS CAMPO
REPORTER: He’s passionate about education and committed to his student body. Meet Dr. Carlos Campo, President-Elect of Regent University.
Carlos Campo: We’re going to challenge you to know who you are in God. And we are going to challenge your intellect. We’re going to challenge your emotion. You’re going to graduate Regent with a skill set that goes far beyond the market.
REPORTER: Dr. Campo’s desire to pursue excellence is birthed out of his own family heritage. As a first generation Cuban American, he credits much of his success to his parents’ fortitude.
Carlos Campo: They made a way for all of us kids. And when I think about the fact that my father came to this country, he had 20 dollars in his pocket, was in New York City and had a dream and made it come true. My mother basically at the age of 13 was orphaned. And she and her sister had the fortitude to walk to a local radio station and audition for a show and made it. They literally made a way for themselves and for us. Those are the sorts of stories that folks from my generation tell often about their parents.
REPORTER: His mother, Betty Clooney, was a singer. His aunt, Rosemary Clooney, was known as one of America’s most beloved performers. His father, Pupi Campo, graced the stage as a legendary Latin orchestra leader and recording artist.
Carlos Campo: I grew up around people that were really talented. And so I think Dad and Mom certainly instilled those qualities in me. Never, ever, ever think that mediocre is okay.
REPORTER: Campo’s father’s determination encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
Carlos Campo: Here is an immigrant who didn’t speak a word of English, came to this country with nothing except a dream to be an entertainer and be a successful one. He was able to achieve that. And he also worked very hard. So the idea of hard work was something that Dad established in me.
REPORTER: And his mother instilled in him a love for literature and the Lord.
Carlos Campo: My mother reading at our bedsides was my earliest memory. There was a discovery in hearing the narrative that, of course, my mother brought to life. A lifelong entertainer, she was a wonderful reader. And just having that wash over my ears and into my mind developed in me this love for learning.
REPORTER: Tragically, his mother died of a brain aneurysm when Carlos was just 17.
Carlos Campo: When we lost our mom, it did this to us. We just made a commitment to one another as a family. We were not a usual Latino family anyhow, but we just said, “We know that God has called us to ministry. And we know He has called us to one another.”
REPORTER: And Campo says he knew he was called to the classroom. He taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and received numerous awards as an outstanding educator.
Carlos Campo: When I was in the classroom, again, just blessed with phenomenal students. And they just pushed me to greater heights as an instructor.
REPORTER: Dr. Campo credits his wife of 30 years, Karen, with the unconditional support that led to his successes in academia.
Carlos Campo: When you think about God’s blessing and graciousness, Karen is just absolutely that. She’s my rock and has just been at my side all of these years.
REPORTER: And she will continue to be there as Dr. Carlos Campo assumes leadership of Regent University from founder Pat Robertson in August 2010. The two share a vision to extend the university’s global reach.
Carlos Campo: We are a school that strongly, strongly emphasizes our roots and our roots absolutely are Christian. Our faculty, our people, that not only look into your life and say, “I want you to be the best lawyer, the best educator you can be, but I want you to be the best human being you can be.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Leadership to change the world. And with him at the helm, I guess that’s . . . .
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, he’s a nice successor. I’ve been president, I guess, over there for close to ten years now, and among other duties that I have. And it’s nice to have a man of that caliber. He’s been with us as vice president of Academic Affairs, done a wonderful job the last couple years. And it just seemed to a search committee that he was the man, and I totally concurred.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Boy, his vision is awesome.
PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, yes. He’s the cousin of George Clooney. He’s the nephew of Rosemary Clooney.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amazing.
PAT ROBERTSON: It’s quite a family.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, it really is.
PAT ROBERTSON: And his father was a . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Great story.
PAT ROBERTSON: . . . band leader. He’s something else. But they came here from Cuba. But my goodness, we’re so blessed to have him, because as we reach out into Latin America and into other countries in the world, Regent will be taking the lead to have somebody at the helm who understands these cultures. It’s just wonderful.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s great. God’s provision.
PAT ROBERTSON: I’m thrilled. A need for speed. That’s what drove Sammy Maloof to drag race on the streets of Los Angeles. But one day, his fast and furious lifestyle came to a screeching halt when Sammy backed down from a race.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
SAMMY MALOOF
DORY NISSEN: Hot rods, speed and high energy. They’re the adrenaline of racecar driver and Hollywood stuntman Sammy Maloof.
Sammy Maloof: My life as a child, it’s always been in vehicles, something to do with either go-carts, mini-bikes, bicycles, anything to do that moved, anything to do that had some kind of motor on it. I wanted to be a part of it. And if it didn’t have a motor on it, I’m going to put a motor on it.
DORY NISSEN: Sammy’s need for speed became an obsession. So he started illegally street racing in Los Angeles.
Sammy Maloof: The stuff I built was fast, super fast, super dependable.
DORY NISSEN: Fueled by his competitive edge, Sammy started fighting in bars for money.
Sammy Maloof: Give me your hand a minute. It would be we would take somebody’s finger and lock it in. You would hold your fist. I would hold mine. They would say, “Go.” And you would twist until somebody’s finger went snap for 1,000 dollars.
DORY NISSEN: Ironically, Sammy thought his life was completely normal.
Sammy Maloof: It was just the thing to do. People that were free of things, they could look and say, “That kid, he’s got some issues.” But you tell me that, I would look at them and say, “No, you’ve got the issues.”
DORY NISSEN: Then he met a radio DJ who loved hot rods. The man took a special interest in Sammy.
Sammy Maloof: I heard my name being mentioned on the radio. “Hey, I met this guy out in San Gabriel. He has a racecar shop. Man, I just want to say hi to my friend Sammy.” I said, “Wow, man, he said something about me.” Well, ten o’clock or ten thirty that day, I see Ken pull up in his Charger. He goes, “Hey, man, you remember me?” I go, “Yes.” I go, “You said something about me this morning on your radio station.” He goes, “Yes, man, you’re my friend.” So we started talking. I said, “Is that your car?” He goes, “Yes.” I go, “Let me look at it.” I looked at it, and I go, “Man, there’s a lot of things wrong.” He goes, “I know. Everybody tells me the same thing. You need a carburetor. You need a distributor. You need this.” I go, “Let me tell you something. You let me dial your car in. If you don’t notice a change, don’t pay me a dime.” So he goes, “Let me ask you something.” He goes, “You’re into power, and you’re into all this stuff,” he goes, “but do you know Jesus?” I go, “Yes, I know Jesus, man.” He goes, “Who is He?” I said, “He’s the Son of God.” He goes, “That’s not all He is. Who else is He?” I couldn’t say anything else, because I didn’t know anything else. He said, “Man, if you really want to know what supernatural power is, you need to ask Jesus into your heart.”
DORY NISSEN: Captivated by the word “power,” Sammy asked Jesus to be his Savoir and immediately sensed a change.
Sammy Maloof: I knew that something went in and it pushed something out. At that second, I didn’t say that minute, that second, God took what was inside of me and pulled it out this quick. I was transformed. I had no hang-ups anymore. It was over with: the insecurity, the competition, the fear, the doubt, the unbelief.
DORY NISSEN: Sammy knew illegal racing was wrong. He prayed that God would make a way to legally race with a new racecar.
Sammy Maloof: And God said, “Obey the laws of the land, and I’ll give you a racecar.” I said, “Who am I racing?” They pointed to him. I walk over. I go, “My name is Sammy Maloof.” He goes, “I know who you are.” I go, “Well, check it out, dude, I’m not racing tonight.” Everybody in that parking lot turned on me like a snake in the grass. The guy says, “I didn’t come all the way out here for you to be some little bed wetter, some little thumb sucker that can’t race.” I go, “Well, check it out, dude, there’s a lot of cars out here for you to race.” Now, before if somebody said that to me, it was knuckle junction.” So a week goes by, no racecar. Two weeks go by, still no racecar. One day I’m walking out of my engine room, and that GT1 Vet back there was sitting there. It’s been there for six years. It belonged to one of my customers. He was storing it here. And I looked at that car, and I said, “God, is that the car you want me to have? Because if that’s the car you want me to have; I want it.” A week goes by. The man walks in and goes, “Where’s Sammy?” “He’s in the engine room building an engine.” He comes walking in. He goes, “You got a minute?” I go, “Absolutely.” He goes, “I’m going to give you that car. You’ve done so much for our family. I want to give you that car.” I said, “Will you excuse me a minute?” I walked out. I said, “Glory be to God. Father, I thank you for my car.”
DORY NISSEN: Sammy now races legally for regional and national events in the GT1 division in addition to his Hollywood stunt work. He also takes his hot rods across the nation, performing stunts and talking to people about the power of Jesus Christ. And he’s teaching the same lessons to his kids.
Sammy Maloof: Jesus Christ is Lord of my life, and I teach them how to win at the race of life and overcome the doubt fear and unbelief. God is saying, “Be at peace. Know that I am God. Be anxious for nothing. I’ll direct your path.” He doesn’t want you to have trial and error. He wants you to have trial and success.

PAT MINISTERS SALVATION
PAT ROBERTSON: Power. Power. That’s what you want in a car. You want power. You want 600 horse power. You want something that’s hopped up so much it will go 1,000 horses. You want speed. That’s what you want if you’re on the fast lane. You want power. But, you see, Jesus has all power. And the Holy Spirit is a God of power. “You will receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you’ll be My witnesses.” You will receive power. And the word in the Bible in the Greek is dunamis, from which we get the term “dynamite.” You will get dynamite in your life. And Sammy said, “That’s what I want.” And when he found that dynamite, it just completely changed his life. The power of the Holy Spirit will transform you. It will make you into a new creature. If anybody is in Christ, he is a new creation. Sammy Maloof is a new creation. Would you like to have that power? Would you like to be transformed so you can be a new person? Would you like to have the feeling of success and peace and joy? That’s what the Lord said. He said, “I’m going to give you My peace, not like the world gives it to you, but I’m going to give you peace. My peace I give unto you, not like what the world does. I’m going to give you something better. I’m going to give you the peace of Heaven, the peace of God Almighty.” And if you want that, if you want the joy of God into your life, don’t go anywhere. Just bow your head right now. I want you to pray a simple prayer. And if you’ll do it, the Lord of power will come into your life. Pray with me, these words, and let’s ask Him. Pray with me. As I pray, you pray. “Lord Jesus.” That’s right. Pray with me. “Lord Jesus, you know me. I don’t have power in my life. I have problems in my life. I’m confused in my life. But Lord, I know that you sent the Holy Spirit to bring me into a new walk with you, to give me power to live a victorious life. And Lord, I want victory over sin. I want victory over despair. I want victory over discouragement. And now, Lord, I turn to you, and I say come into my life. Live in me, Lord. Bring to me that which you have. I want all of you, Lord. I want to know you. I want to be filled with you. Lord Jesus, come now. Enter into my heart. I confess my sin. I turn from my sin, and I give you my life. From this moment on, I am yours. Thank you, Jesus, that you heard my prayer. And thank you, Jesus, that you came into my heart.” Now, that’s the most important prayer you’ve ever prayed. And I want you to make something of it. I want you to praise God and thank Him for what He has done for you.

CHRISTIANS RELEASED
JOHN JESSUP: Welcome to Washington for this CBN Newsbreak. Iranian Christians are celebrating the release of two former Muslims held in prison for nearly nine months. Iranian police arrested 27-year-old Maryam Rostampour and 30-year-old Marzieh Amirizadeh in March after storming their apartment and confiscating their Bibles. The two women faced life imprisonment for apostasy. During a court hearing, the Iranian government ordered the women to recant their Christian faith. They refused. Even though the women have been released from prison, they still may be required to appear before a civilian court.
LUTHERANS LEAVING
JOHN JESSUP: The liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is heading for a split over gay marriage. The denomination voted in August to allow sexually active gay and lesbian pastors. Opponents say that's in direct contradiction to scripture. Conservative Lutherans say they will soon start drafting a constitution to form a new denomination. They hope to have it off the ground by August. Well, you can always get the latest from CBN News by going to our web site at CBN.com.

SPOT 4A: SWISS AMERICA “LEFT IN COLD”
Pat Boone: Pat Boone here for my good friends at Swiss America, the company that has helped Americans to rediscover gold for over 25 years now. You may have noticed gold prices have more than doubled in the last five years, but do you ever wonder why? Economists say the top five reasons are: a falling dollar, which also creates number two, a rising cost of living. Third, increasing demand for gold worldwide. Fourth, political uncertainty. And fifth, new Wall Street gold funds. It all adds up to higher prices ahead. Gold offers safety first and then profit. A wise economist has said a portfolio without gold is like walking around naked in zero degree temperatures. So don’t get caught in the cold without gold. Call Swiss America now for a free educational kit. Ask about tax free gold IRAs. Seize this rare opportunity today. Call now.

And send a contribution, because we want to help people at this holiday season. There are folks in this country who are hurting now. They’ve lost their jobs, out of work. They’re just scraping by, and they don’t have enough food. And if we can make some joy to them, it will be a wonderful thing. So not only can we take the gifts that you give, but we can multiply them in the communities. Normally speaking, in days gone by at least, we’ve been able to multiply as many as four times. So the gifts that you give, if you give 100 dollars, we could make that into 400 by other agencies that we can partner with. So call right now. We’re going to help a lot of people and let’s help several million here in America to have a better Thanksgiving and a better Christmas. Call right now: 1-800-759-0700. Say, “You can count on me to help somebody not as fortunate as I am.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, what a lot of people may not realize is, November is the month that we celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s also National Adoption month. And so we’ve got a very heartwarming story as we celebrate that month. We want to introduce you to Rob and Deborah Amend. They had two sons when they decided to add to their family. The Amends are now also the parents of three extraordinary daughters from halfway around the world. Take a look.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
ROB AND DEBORAH AMEND
RENELLE ROBERTS: Ten-year-old Anna is a champion swimmer. She also loves teaching her dog new tricks.
Deborah Amend: Anna is missing one arm completely. And then she has a leg condition, leg and hip condition, which creates two different length legs. So she requires a prosthetic to walk.
RENELLE ROBERTS: Deborah and Rob Amend already had two sons, when they felt hat God was telling them to adopt more children. In 2003, they made the trip to Ukraine and found little Anna. They immediately fell in love with her.
Rob Amend: Physical special needs were something that we felt that God had prepared us so we could handle.
RENELLE ROBERTS: A year later, the Amends went to Kazakhstan and brought home Saya.
Deborah Amends: Saya has a condition called radio clubbed hand, which basically means she’s missing part of her forearms and some fingers and her hands are clubbed, similar to clubbed foot, but with her hands.
RENELLE ROBERTS: Then in 2006, they made another trip to Ukraine, and came home with five-year-old Alyona, whose latest interest is the piano.
Deborah Amends: Ally has a condition called arthrogryposis, which is a joint and muscle disorder. Her legs are locked, and her elbows are locked, her shoulders, so she has very limited ability to move.
Rob Amends: There is lots of excitement any time you have multiple kids in a house. But it’s just so interesting to see the different personalities bloom.
Deborah Amends: God just knows us that intimately to which of these children belong with us. Each time we met each of our daughters, just the miracle of seeing them and pulling them out and realizing, “This is another one that’s mine.”
RENELLE ROBERTS: Deborah and Rob know that if the girls had stayed in Ukraine or Kazakhstan, they would have been institutionalized for the rest of their lives.
Deborah Amends: To know that God can united people over the course of the whole world, to see just how sovereign He is and how perfectly they fit in with us, it’s a whole different kind of miracle. I think the Bible is very clear where the heart of God is. He’s the God of widows and orphans. This is beyond just a nice thing to do. God expects us to care. And we have those resources. And we need to be using them for what God wants us to use them for. I really believe this is where His heart is.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It is where His heart is. He tells us that, and the Amends are doing an amazing job raising three beautiful little girls to believe in who they were created to be and to be filled with possibility for the future. The mom, Deborah, has written a really wonderful book called A Dress for Anna. It is very inspiring. And if you’re looking for some reading to inspire your life or something fun to read as a family, this is a great book for all of you. And it’s available nationwide. A wonderful family doing an amazing job.
PAT ROBERTSON: How many have you adopted?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Five.
PAT ROBERTSON: You have adopted five children?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I have adopted five children.
PAT ROBERTSON: One, two, three, four, five?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And five. Yes.
PAT ROBERTSON: Mother of a multitude. You have your own children.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, I have two biological kids.
PAT ROBERTSON: Two. Now you’ve got seven.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Now I have seven. And you know what, he is so right, what Mr. Amend said in that story, and that is that it’s so fun to watch every one of them become individually who they are and see God at work in their lives. And here is a statistic that a lot of you might not know as well. Do you know less than one percent of the orphans in the world get adopted? So the three little girls that you just saw in the Amend family have found a family. But that doesn’t happen for everyone. I’d like you to meet a girl from Ukraine, and unlike these last three sisters that you saw in our story with the Amends, Marina hasn’t been adopted by a loving family yet. But she has received the next best thing.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
MARINA
DAN REANY: Growing up in a small village outside of Kiev, Ukraine, Marina never knew what each day would bring. The only thing she felt sure of was that it wouldn’t be good.
Marina: My mother drank a lot and didn’t love me. Once, she told me to get a newspaper, and I didn’t know where it was, so she beat me. And I always forgave her. When she hit me, I would think, “She’s not hurting me. She’s hurting herself.”
DAN REANY: When her parents drank, Marina wandered the streets alone. Sometimes she spent the night in an abandoned house. She was often hungry and sick. Then a social worker brought Marina to a small Christian youth center supported by Orphan’s Promise. At the center, life was very different.
Marina: When I started to live here, I didn’t feel like an orphan. I had new brothers and sisters. Our caregivers are parents for us, and the director is like our father. This is our home.
DAN REANY: Three years ago, this orphanage was just two cramped bedrooms and a run down common area. But thanks to support of CBN donors, today there is more than twice as much living space. We’re not just giving these kids a safe and happy place to live, we’re providing them with a future. At the center, Marina is learning computer skills which will help her get a good job one day. She is also learning English and life skills.
Marina: During the life skills lessons, they tell us about God. We play, sing songs and have fun.
DAN REANY: After one of those lessons, Marina prayed and gave her life to Christ. She says she treats people better now and believes that with God she will have a happy future. Living at the center has given Marina hope and a new outlook on life.
Marina: I would like to thank the people who are helping us. I wish them all happiness and good health.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Can you see how God is working in her heart, healing her past and giving her hope and a future? You’re helping to make that happen. Orphan’s Promise is doing that kind of work with kids like Marina all around the world. And if you’re a part of The 700 Club, a part of CBN and what’s going on here, then you’re reaching out to the world with that kind of love and hope and opportunity for kids like this.

It gives you all the basics of what you need to know to be effective in managing your finances in this difficult time. So let us send this to you and be a blessing to you, even as you’re touching and blessing the lives of others. This is Rica, who lives in Crawfordville, Tennessee. She’s already received this and says, “Thank you, Pat, for this CD. I learned so much from it. The language was simple, so I could understand it easily. The information was very good. I’m planning on listening to this CD many times.” Hear, hear, Rica. Me, too.
PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. All right.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: So join The 700 Club.
PAT ROBERTSON: Before we leave that, that little girl over the Ukraine, it breaks your heart to think that her mother, her own mother, was hitting her.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Oh, Pat, that’s a mild story compared to some that we hear. You just can’t imagine. Poverty does terrible things to people. They drink and they take drugs . . . . .
PAT ROBERTSON: Is it the poverty or is it the drinking?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: . . . . to numb the pain.
PAT ROBERTSON: And then they begin to be like animals and start beating their children.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. There are mothers who take their daughters into prostitution, so that they can make money. One of the great opportunities we have is to provide the kind of place she’s in, where she’s learning English. She’s learning computer skills. She’s learning about the Lord. She’s learning how to budget money and how to do things that who teaches you? Your parents.

PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. But the wonderful thing is, she wasn’t apparently scarred by these experiences. She’s still got a heart for God.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: She has a very tender heart. Yes. That isn’t always the case, but we’re working also on helping kids to find inner healing through the Lord.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Oh, my. Well, as I say, it just breaks your heart to think of it. But ladies and gentlemen, if we can help a few—you can’t help them all. You wish you could help them all but you can’t. But you can help a few. And thank God we can reach out to those in Orphan’s Promise all around the world, plus others that we’re helping, millions.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And though we can’t help them all, when you help one ,the ripple effect is she turns around and touches somebody else’s life. So we can do lots.
PAT ROBERTSON: All right. Go ahead.

BRING IT ON
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is Shondra, who says,
“I’m a young mom with a beautiful daughter and a loving husband. I should be happy, but every time my husband and daughter leave the house I’m overwhelmed with a deep fear that something terrible will happen to them, and I’ll be left alone. How can I get rid of this fear?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Shondra, the Bible says, “Perfect love casts out fear, for fear has torment.” There may be a spirit of fear. You need to command that thing to leave you, because fear grips you. It paralyzes you. And perfect love. You need to ask God to fill you with the love of Jesus, but at the same time, when that fear comes on you, say, “In the name of Jesus, I command you, you spirit of fear, leave me.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And then put on some praise and worship music, because the enemy won’t hang around.
PAT ROBERTSON: A question, real quick.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, Stefan says,
“My name is Stefan. I’m from Barbados. I’m not a person who curses or is normally rebellious, but lately I’ve been experiencing blasphemous thoughts about the trinity. Now life seems to be one big mess. I don’t understand what’s happened to me. Could I be cursed?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Stefan, it may be that somewhere there was something having to do with black magic or the occult that has come into your life. I don’t know whether you’ve gotten an association with somebody who practices witchcraft. There are so many things in the islands of this nature that they do begin in satanic worship. Again, you need to command that to leave you. You can do it. You have authority as a child of God to command Satan to leave you alone. And in the name of Jesus, you win. So that’s what you need to do. Don’t think you are cursed or anything like that. Begin to say, “In Jesus’ name, I will not submit to these blasphemous thoughts.” Well, that’s all the time we’ve got. We leave you with these words from James, . . . .
