Republicans and Democrats are closely watching this year’s governor races in New Jersey and Virginia. They believe it could be an indicator of things to come in next year’s congressional elections. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And those races are also being seen as a referendum on President Obama and the Democratic Party. John Jessup has the story. GOVERNORS JOHN JESSUP: Voters head to the polls in less than 24 hours, and with the candidates running neck and neck in New Jersey, incumbent Governor Jon Corzine brought in the big guns. President Barack Obama: How’s it going, New Jersey? JOHN JESSUP: President Obama called on Democrats to re-elect Corzine to a second term and described him as a key partner in rebuilding the economy. President Barack Obama: It wasn't a consequence of Obama policies or Corzine policies that we went into this hole. JOHN JESSUP: Corzine has outspent Republican challenger Chris Christie by nearly three times in campaign dollars, but that hasn't translated in the polls, which show a tight race. He is banking on President Obama, who has campaigned with him three times, to deliver a win on Tuesday. Democrats desperately need a win there, because in Virginia they are bracing to lose the governor's mansion to Republican Bob McDonnell, who leads Democrat Creigh Deeds by double digits in the polls. Bob McDonnell (VA Gubernatorial Candidate [R]): This is the two-minute drill. The TV, radio, and the mailing is done. It's now about getting people to show up on game day, on Tuesday. Creigh Deeds (VA Gubernatorial Candidate [D]): I’m here to tell you the only poll that counts is the one that’s going to be taken on Tuesday. JOHN JESSUP: Obama won Republican-leaning Virginia last year by appealing to independents. Jonathan Martin (Politico.com): But many of those same people right now seem to have real concerns over the Democratic Party, especially issues related to spending and health care. JOHN JESSUP: Political analysts see a potential for big gains if Republicans succeed on election day. Stuart Rothenberg (Rothenberg Political Report): It could generate the kind of enthusiasm and money that really would help the Republicans a year from now. JOHN JESSUP: Tomorrow’s outcome may also provide a picture of things to come for 2010 in the mid-term elections. John Jessup, CBN News, Washington. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, if you live in New Jersey or Virginia or the 23rd District in New York, please go out and vote tomorrow. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. NY 23 LEE WEBB: Gordon, we just talked about the governors’ races in Virginia and New Jersey. They get the most attention in these off year elections. But this year another race is also making news, and it is the New York’s 23rd congressional district, where the outcome could have an impact on the national scene. Here is John Waage. JOHN WAAGE: The battle to replace Republican Congressman John McHugh, who became President Obama's army secretary, has turned into a high stakes venture. The New York 23rd is a huge district in the north of the state, and has voted for Republicans in the House since 1870. GOP county chairmen had chosen New York Legislator Dede Scozzafava for their candidate to replace McHugh. She is pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and conservatives say she has a bad record on taxes and spending. She was challenged by Doug Hoffman, a political newcomer who is running as the Conservative Party candidate. This weekend Scozzafava dropped a bombshell when she withdrew from the race, trailing in the polls behind Hoffman and the Democrat’s candidate Bill Owens. John Fund (The Wall Street Journal): I think it's a warning to the Republican Party that you can't nominate a candidate in the district that alienates almost the entire conservative base. With the exception of gun control, Dede Scozzafava, the official Republican candidate, is liberal on everything. In fact, she's more liberal than half of the Democrats in the New York State Legislature. JOHN WAAGE: Scozzafava had won endorsements from Newt Gingrich and the NRA. Gingrich now backs Hoffman, and joins Sarah Palin, Minnesota governor and would-be presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty, and more than a dozen other prominent conservatives who came out early for Hoffman. Some Democrats scoff at the conservatives' influence on the race. GRAPHIC: MEET THE PRESS David Plouffe (Former Obama Campaign Mgr.): I think what you're going to see in the coming months, if not years, is Sarah Palin—by the way, she is kind of playing the role as Pied Piper in the Republican Party, which is something I'm quite comfortable with. So Sarah Palin, the other Republican candidates who are likely to run, the Limbaughs and Becks of the world are basically hanging a “moderates need not apply” sign outside the Republican National Committee Headquarters. JOHN WAAGE: But Fund thinks it's good for Republicans that they were slow to read the mood of restlessness and anger from the Tea Parties, because the protest sprang from the conservative grassroots rather than from party backing. John Fund: I think the Republican Party is playing catch-up, but I think they finally figured out a little bit of what the public mood is, which is very suspicious and skeptical of a federal budget that borrows 46 cents out of every dollar we're spending this year. JOHN WAAGE: John Waage, CBN News. LEE WEBB: And Scozzafava delivered another surprise after dropping out of that race in the 23rd congressional district. She endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, rather than the conservative Hoffman. TITANS LEE WEBB: Can Capitalism survive in America or is more and more government control the way of the future? That was the focus of Regent University’s seventh annual Clash of the Titans debate. Mark Martin has the highlights. MARK MARTIN: Regent University President and Chancellor Dr. Pat Robertson introduced the moderator of this year’s debate. PAT ROBERTSON: I’m not quite sure whether he’s a Republican or a Democrat, because he gives them both grief. MARK MARTIN: Former congressman and the host of the cable news program Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough: Joe Scarborough (Debate Moderator): He sounds like my mother. “I don’t know whether you’re Republican or a Democrat, Joey.” MARK MARTIN: The debate itself also seemed to blur party lines at times. Man: This is going to be all mixed up here, because I’m going to agree with Dick Armey on this stuff. Man: I was the governor for 12 years. I actually don’t really trust the federal government so very much. MARK MARTIN: But there were two distinct teams. On the left, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Howard Dean, and co-founder of the news and blog site, “The Huffington Post,” Arianna Huffington. On the right, former nine term Republican Congressman John Kasich. His teammate: former House Majority Leader Dick Armey. Many Americans believe traditional values, as well as capitalism, are under attack under the current administration’s trend toward bigger government. As you can imagine, both sides had plenty to say about this. John Kasich (Debate Participant): So why couldn’t we just agree with the fact that we ought to have free enterprise in health insurance? We ought to force the companies to compete across state lines, so that we actually have competition. Howard Dean (Debate Participant): John, the worst thing you could do is have insurance companies competing against state lines. I don’t want the health commissioner in Texas to have anything to do with my health care system. MARK MARTIN: Huffington and Armey had their own battles over how intrusive government should be. Arianna Huffington (Debate Participant): In 1995, July 11th to be specific, you said, “Medicare is a program I would have no part in a free world.” Do you still agree with that? Dick Armey: Why did I know you would bring that up? Arianna Huffington: Absolutely. Because I want to know whether you still agree with yourself or not. Dick Armey (Debate Participant): I’m glad you do. In Medicare today, a system that’s supposed to be voluntary, right now as it is administered, if you do not sign up for Medicare, they take away your social security. Is that freedom? MARK MARTIN: So who won the debate? Audience members told CBN News there were no clear cut winners and losers. Jeffrey Breit (Attended Debate): And you’re going, “Wait a minute, I have to lean one way or the other,” but they were so good at describing and comparing the things that they want to say, that you felt you were agreeing with almost every speaker, even though I don’t. Susan Arroyo (Attended Debate): I think they all have a deep interest in preserving capitalism, and I did not expect that to come through. John Kasich (Debate Participant): Capitalism better survive. I think that we worry about our country, but we have some really great advantages. We have entrepreneurship in our DNA. MARK MARTIN: Mark Martin, CBN News. PHILIPPINES TYPHOON LEE WEBB: The Philippines is trying to recover after its fourth typhoon in 30 days. The latest storm, called Mirinae, killed at least 20 people. Heavy rains over the weekend triggered more floods in an already waterlogged region. The first three storms caused the worst flooding the Philippines has experienced in 40 years and killed more than 900 people. Tens of thousands were left homeless. GORDON ROBERTSON: On The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, last month, the federal government gave Detroit money to help 3,500 families who couldn’t afford to pay their bills. Thirty-five thousand showed up to apply. Well, these are desperate times for the motor city, and local government leaders are turning to God for answers. Efrem Graham has that story. FOCUS: FACE OF RECESSION EFREM GRAHAM: Next to the automobile, music and Motown are what made Detroit. Michigan famous in the 1950s and 1960s. The reputation reeled in new residents who often arrived from the South in search of a better life. Martha Reeves (Detroit City Councilwoman): Yes, I was brought here at the age of 11 months old from Alabama, raised in the public school system. I am a good product, because I had good teachers. EFREM GRAHAM: Legendary Motown recording artist Martha Reeves of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, remembers the good old days and pays tribute to them on the walls of her office at City Hall. The singer is now a councilwoman, helping to run a city unlike the one she remembers from her days at Hitsville, USA. Martha Reeves: Detroit is a city suffering from a lapse of population. People left here as if it were on fire. EFREM GRAHAM: IRS figures show 63,000 families left the Metro Detroit area in 2007. And it isn’t the only troubling city statistic. Detroit is the murder capital of the United States, with more murders in 2009 than New York City, a city with nearly ten times the population. And Detroit's unemployment has climbed to its highest on record, 28.9 percent. That is nearly three out of every ten residents. Martha Reeves: There is a decline in our auto sales, but 50 percent of the cars on the street are foreign. So there is a lot of things that we probably need to take note of. EFREM GRAHAM: The American automotive industry fueled the Motor City’s economy. Financial analysts now point to the industry's struggles for the city's fast and furious decline. But Councilwoman Reeves says the problem runs deeper. Detroit is a city of people who lost faith when they began to lose their jobs. Martha Reeves: The faith is coming back. We know that we have gone through hard times, and the crime rate is up. But He can heal all things. And the more we spread the word, the better the city will be. EFREM GRAHAM: In tough times, God and government are coming together in unique ways in metro Detroit. Here at the Warren Town Hall, there is a now a station in the lobby where Christian volunteers wait to pray with anyone in need. Pastor Gerald Echols (New Gospel Temple Church): Even with all the churches that are in the city, no one really wanted to hear about God until these things began to happen. EFREM GRAHAM: Organizers and volunteers have prayed with more than a thousand people in eight months. The prayer station has strong support of Warren's Mayor James Fouts as well. Mayor James Fouts (Warren, Michigan): I have had a good response. Most people think that, obviously, a prayer station is needed, especially in stressful times. EFREM GRAHAM: Bob Adams is glad the station was there when he needed it. At 53, the former stand-up comedian, radio announcer, insurance salesman and waiter lost his job more than a year ago. He was also homeless and about to lose his unemployment benefits of 400 dollars every two weeks when he stopped by for prayer. Bob Adams (Unemployed Detroit Resident): Literally, two days later, whatever the problem was and whatever computer it was somewhere in Lansing, my check was issued the next day. And it was just amazing. It was just like I looked up, and I said, “Phew, that is the power of the Lord.” EFREM GRAHAM: Adams is still looking for work, but he is no longer homeless. Volunteers at the prayer station helped him to secure an apartment he shares with two roommates. Bob Adams: I keep praying that I get the strength every day to get up, to say, “Okay, today is another day. I’ve got another day today. Today is another day,” because you don't know when God's miracles are going to happen. EFREM GRAHAM: The prayer station idea here at the Warren, Michigan Town Hall was actually inspired by prayer stations that popped in New York City following the events of 9/11. Right now, about a half dozen churches work together to man the stations. And the idea is spreading. Man: We pray, O God, that you would just bless the city, O God. Restore it, O God. Revive it for your glory, Lord. EFREM GRAHAM: Young volunteers watch and pray at this station in northwest Detroit. And it's a sacrifice, because they are also among the city’s more than 113,000 people looking for work. But there is also someone praying for them back at Detroit City Hall. Martha Reeves: I have since 1977 studied and found out that anything you want, all you have to do is ask for it. If you have a one-on-one relationship with Jesus, if you have a personal relationship with Jesus, He will give a you a miracle at a moment. EFREM GRAHAM: At 68, Reeves' council term is soon to end, and she will not run again. But she will always carry a song in her heart for her city. Martha Reeves (Singing): “Precious Lord, take my hand and lead me on . . . .” EFREM GRAHAM: Efrem Graham, CBN News, Detroit, Michigan. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: I don’t know what it is about difficult economic times that seems to drive us closer to God. Difficulty seems to do that. Blessings and prosperity, for whatever reason, seems to separate. We start thinking we did this based on our own effort, our own smarts or hard work or whatever. And we ignore the God who gave us the power to get wealth. The good news is that His love never fails. It’s always there. His mercy never ceases. All we have to do is come to Him and ask. And if we’ll do that as a nation, we can see our nation change. “If My people,” He’s not talking about unbelievers, “If My people will humble themselves and pray and turn,” that’s all we have to do. So do that. I really like what these prayer stations are doing in terms of praying for their own cities. I was reading in Jeremiah today where he commands the exiles to Babylon to pray for the prosperity of Babylon. You would think that would be an unusual prayer request coming from God Almighty, but He literally commands them, “Pray. Pray for the city that you’re exiled to, because the prosperity of that city will determine your own prosperity.” And He wants His people to prosper. So pray for your cities. Pray for your neighborhoods. Pray for the elections coming up. Pray. Pray for the President. Pray for the administration. Pray for wisdom in our leaders. And if we can all agree to just pray and ask God for blessing, then He’ll turn. He’ll come. He’ll heal our land. Terry. He was stunned, because he realized he was looking at himself. DUSTIN DANIELS ANDREW KNOX: Dustin Daniels comes from a long line of commercial fishermen. Dustin Daniels: We go back about 12 generations. My grandfather, my dad and my grandfather’s granddad were all fishermen. ANDREW KNOX: His family also has a strong Christian heritage. Dustin Daniels: My grandmother is just a prayer warrior. And my grandfather was an awesome man of God. ANDREW KNOX: But even with strong family ties, a childhood incident changed his life. Dustin Daniels: My family had went on vacation, and I was left with some family friends. While I was at their house, they had a son that was around 20 years old. He had me up in his room, and he sexually molested me. ANDREW KNOX: When his parents’ friends returned home that evening, they found Dustin crying. But he wouldn’t reveal what had happened. Dustin Daniels: I felt like I’d done something really bad and that whatever had happened wasn’t supposed to happen, and if I said anything or brought it up or whatever that maybe nobody would believe what had happened. ANDREW KNOX: Dustin kept the secret, long after that day. Dustin Daniels: That began a terror in my life, because of the anger and bitterness, because of what had happened and holding it in at a very young age. And so over the course of my life, I began to act out a little bit here and there. ANDREW KNOX: His behavior got worse after his grandfather died. Dustin Daniels: And I got really angry and bitter towards God. And that was when I first really started getting into alcohol and smoking and just things like that. I had gotten a bottle of Bacardi rum, and I came down to the dock to where me and my grandfather used to hang out. And I just sat there, and I just downed that bottle as hard and as fast as I could. I got severely sick and passed out in the office of our crab dock. Coming in and out of consciousness, I realized that my face was down in my own vomit, and I was choking. ANDREW KNOX: Another brush with death came when he overdosed on speed and cocaine. Dustin Daniels: I could actually see my shirt raising off my chest, because my heart was beating so fast and so hard. And I remember laying down on the couch thinking, “I’m going to die.” ANDREW KNOX: Dustin survived, but he didn’t learn his lesson. Even as he continued to make bad decisions, his responsibilities grew. He and his girlfriend had a baby, and he became captain of one of his father’s fishing boats, a childhood dream, but he blew it. Dustin Daniels: I had gotten so bad in my drug use that I was no longer able to fish. I couldn’t run a boat or make good decisions on fishing, because I was so blown out of my mind. I was eating pain pills and Xanax, like they were tic tacs, drinking heavily. But I felt like I was normal. I felt like that everything was good. ANDREW KNOX: But everything wasn’t good. Dustin overdosed again. His girlfriend found him almost dead. Dustin Daniels: She called the paramedics. And when they got there, when I was in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, I passed away, and I came back. I stayed on life support for four days. My whole family was there, and it was a huge issue with them to get me into a rehab facility. And I convinced them, “Hey, I’m all right. This really shocked me. I didn’t realize I’d gotten this far.” ANDREW KNOX: Dustin was still convinced he was okay. He continued to use drugs, but one afternoon, when he and a friend broke in to a woman’s home in search of pills. Dustin was stunned at how crazy his friend appeared. Dustin Daniels: God spoke to my heart and said, “Listen, that’s how people see you every day of your life.” And for the first time in my addiction, I saw myself for what I’d become. I saw myself as a drug addict. And I saw myself how other people are seeing me every day, and it literally broke my heart. ANDREW KNOX: The next morning, drunk and depressed, Dustin watched show after show on Christian television. Dustin Daniels: I called my mom at work, and I said, “Mom,” I said, “I really need you to come over here. I’m in bad shape and just really need to get some help or whatever.” ANDREW KNOX: He had heard about a yearlong recovery program in a Christian setting called Teen Challenge. He was just desperate enough to try it. Dustin Daniels: I was torn, because I was depressed about being there and everything. But eventually, as time went by, my life began to change. ANDREW KNOX: With counseling at Teen Challenge, Dustin worked through the pain of his childhood. Dustin Daniels: It was one of the hardest things that I had ever dealt with. And I really fought dealing with those issues. When I did sit down with him in that counseling session and go through those issues, I felt like that I lost 600 pounds. ANDREW KNOX: He finished his recovery program and hasn’t looked back. Today, he’s a loving husband and father. He no longer struggles with drug abuse, and in fact, is helping others recover. Dustin is the director of the Teen Challenge program in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, just down the road from his family’s fishing dock. Dustin Daniels: The Bible says to raise up a child in the way they should go and they will leave it or forsake it. That doesn’t mean they won’t turn their back on it or they won’t go their own way, but it means that what you install in them as a child will stick with them. And that has stuck with me, knowing what the situation was if I chose that path. When I turned my life completely over to God that night, that turning point, I believe that I was 100 percent delivered and set free. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MINISTERS TERRY MEEUWSEN: God has such a plan. He wants us to be a part of it. And there is an enemy. You can call him what you want: Satan, the devil, a force of evil, whatever you want to name him. But what’s his goal? His goal is to steal your soul, to rob your identity from you. First, in this scenario, he made him feel guilty about something he didn’t even do, something that wasn’t even his fault. And then he felt shame. And how do you come out from under that, a small child? So then you start masking your pain. And eventually, just as we’ve been deceived by the enemy of God, we become deceivers ourselves. Here he is laying in his own vomit, choking, on life support for four days. And he feels like he’s still okay. He’s got it together. Do you see how the enemy tries to come in and take what God meant for good? We are identified with our Creator. The Bible says we’re made in His image and likeness, not to lay in our own vomit, not to ruin our lives by choices that are destroying us, destroying those around us. God has more than that for you. Today, maybe you are someone who finds yourself living under the guilt of the past, ashamed of things that you have done or that others have done to you, lifestyle choices you’ve made. Jesus said He came to set the captive free. That was the whole purpose that He came. There is a story in the Bible about the good shepherd, and it says that if all of the sheep were with him and one was lost, he’d leave the 99 to go out and find the one that’s lost. Are you lost today? This message is for you. God wants you to come home. He wants you to come home to His heart. He wants you to hunger for Him, to hunger to find out what you were created for. I love what Dustin said when he finally came to the Lord, when he finally dealt with the issues he’d been trying to avoid from his past. It was like 600 pounds came off his back. Don’t let the enemy of God keep you in captivity anymore. You hold the key. And it begins with coming home to the Father heart of God. It begins with understanding who you are, and then asking God to be all that He is in the midst of your circumstances. You can have that right now. It’s not just for a few. It’s for anybody who will call upon the name of the Lord. Will you pray with me? Just stop what you’re doing. Do business with God today. Maybe you’ve done it before and you say, “It doesn’t work for me.” It works. It works, because He is who He says. It doesn’t work because of you. It works because you choose to trust Him. Pray with me. “God, I want to know you the way Dustin does. I’ve got so much baggage I can’t lift it anymore. I’m under a pile of guilt and shame, and God, I want to come out from under this. I want to breathe freely. I want to see the sunlight again. I want to live life with purpose and meaning. I want this weight off of me. I have totally messed up my life. I’m coming to you today because I’ve come to the end of myself. I can’t do this anymore. Will you come into the center of my being, Jesus? You know everything about me. Roy, it’s great to have you with us again. God bless you. Roy Fields: Good to see you, Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: We’re watching the clip, and you’re saying, “I miss that.” Roy Fields: I do. Very much so. GORDON ROBERTSON: Yes, you’re still in the grieving process, aren’t you? Roy Fields: A little bit. But we’ve been seeing a lot of things happen around the world. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, it’s almost like you’ve been released now to travel and, to have a better word, aftermath of what happened with Lakeland. You’ve been released to travel, and you’ve been going around the world. And your prayer is being answered, that wherever you appear, revival is coming. Roy Fields: Very much so. Yes. We find ourselves having to extend meetings, because there is such a hunger from people showing up where we’re going. And even with two to three weeks notice, people are coming and packing places out. It’s quite extraordinary. GORDON ROBERTSON: You’re rather unique in terms of worship style in that you don’t come in there with any sort of planned agenda or a program, if you will. Roy Fields: Right. Right. GORDON ROBERTSON: “We’re going to sing this one, then we’re going to sing this one, then we’re going to sing this on.” You tend to come in with, “Okay, Holy Spirit, what do you want to do?” Roy Fields: Right. GORDON ROBERTSON: And then you just flow with that. Roy Fields: It’s actually the most disorganized worship service ever, because we have a joke with the guys that we write a list and everything, and then we throw it away. So we rehearse like crazy, and then we forget about it. I always tell the guys, “Let’s just forget about it. Let’s go into the presence of the Lord. It doesn’t matter about anything else.” And when you don’t have a list, God can move in the way He wants to. You’re not stuck to a box. So that’s kind of how I just—I love to be in the moment and feel what God wants to sing and what God wants to hear in that moment. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, there is a pattern for this in the Bible. When you read the Psalms, there are these sort of, I’ll call them funny words, where it’s like “selah” in the middle, and they’re actually a musical notation. And you’ll have musical notations at the beginning of the song talking about the type of instruments to use—some of them have this, not all of them—the type of instruments or the type of melody to play with it. But then they’ll have these interludes where you’re supposed to do spontaneous. You’re supposed to take a break and in that spontaneity meditate on the greatness of God or meditate on what was just said. Roy Fields: Yes. That’s part of it. That’s part of worship. It’s easy to sing a song. But then like, for instance, we sing in the Spirit. I love to sing in the Spirit. I’d love for everyone to sing in the Spirit, sing in the Spirit like just singing your own melodies, your own words, and let it come like the new song in your heart. And when you hear like a bunch of people coming together and singing that—we’ve seen that in Australia. We’ve seen that in Scotland. We’ve seen it in England. We just saw it in South Africa, people just singing together. That interlude is probably, in my opinion, the greatest time or expression of worship, because it’s not planned. It’s not programmed. It comes from the heart. And people don’t have to think about what they’re even singing. Just out of their heart, they’re saying, “I love you, Lord Jesus. You’re awesome. I worship you.” And I get caught up in stuff like that, man. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, everything else seems to be a set up for that. Roy Fields: Yes, it gets you there. It’s a journey. GORDON ROBERTSON: Right. And it’s supposed to be a set up for that, so that when that is released, then you get what Jesus talked about. You worship in spirit and truth. Roy Fields: John 4. He says you worship what you don’t know. We worship what we do know. There’s coming a time, and the time is now is that the true worshippers will worship in spirit and truth. Like we’ve got to be in truth of what we sing. We can’t just lip sync or anything. GORDON ROBERTSON: It’s not karaoke. Roy Fields: No. No. Please! No. GORDON ROBERTSON: How you would tell a worship leader—how would you advise them or train them, mentor them, to get into this? Roy Fields: In Lakeland, for instance, we would rehearse the presence of God in rehearsal. That’s part of it. Make your rehearsal, just as if you’re live worship. Rehearse in the presence of God. It’s like we’re rehearsing for eternity anyway. We’re all getting ready to worship Jesus, sit at His feet. So when He returns—so I would say rehearse the presence of God. And then when you go live, forget about everything you’ve rehearsed and step into that moment. And you might have a set of songs, and you can do them. But it can’t be about you. It’s got to be about Jesus. In the motive of your heart, it has to be about Jesus. We can say it’s about Jesus, but until the motive is really changed in our heart, people can read that on you. They can read and see, “Oh, this guy is performing.” Or, “This guy is just doing it.” It’s got to be about Jesus. “And if I’d be lifted, I will draw all men unto Myself.” He said, “Draw close to me. I’ll draw close to you.” So to use Lakeland as a reference, every night I’d come out, I would always tell the Lord, “Lord, the minute that my feet touch that platform, I lift you up. I’m here to make you famous.” And out of that, my heart—I can only speak out of experience—my heart was turned every night. I didn’t care about anything. It didn’t matter the media coverage. It didn’t matter. It was exciting to have 10,000 people in the place. But in my heart, I turned things around to make sure my motive was correct. And that’s what helped me. And I learned the secret. When I was doing these meetings of maybe 25 people in the early years, I would sing like there was 2,500. And then when I found myself like in the stadium, for instance, and there’s 14,000, I would sing like there was 25 people again, to bring it back into intimacy with the people, so you were real. It wasn’t like you and I are sitting here talking. It’s just real. It’s not all television and all that stuff. And I think the world is crying out for real worship. I think the world is crying out for the real deal. GORDON ROBERTSON: Why are we tempted, if you will, to settle for less, that we want to go through—let’s take a Sunday morning service. We want to go through the program. And we want to go through the ritual. Why do we want to do that as opposed to the other? Roy Fields: Maybe because we have tithers that come to our services, and we need them to put a check in the offering? That could be one reason. The second reason is that I think we’ve become programmed where there is a lot of effort on our part to really go the extra mile. If you’re pursuing God, for instance, it’s going to cost you. It’s going to cost you. That’s why they call it a sacrifice of praise. You might not feel like worshipping God, but the moment that you step into that place—you know what makes worship worship. You could sing the same song over again and when you sing it, if you sing it like you’re singing it for the first time, it becomes brand new. And you attach your heart to it. I’ve been in many services where we sing the old song, because it’s a song that you can attach your heart to. All of a sudden, it becomes this new song, even though you’ve sang it like for years. Old songs: “I Exalt Thee.” It’s a perfect example. GORDON ROBERTSON: You get new sap in the same vine. You’ve seen some miracles. I want to get to this clip while we have time. You were in Minnesota. You had a word of knowledge during the praise and worship about a deaf woman in the audience. Father, I just thank you right now for this lady. Let the fight right now, Lord. There it is. There it is. Go, go, go, go. Pop! Right now, in Jesus’ name. Thank you, Lord. Come. Pick her up. Pick her up. Okay. What do you feel going through your head? Do you feel something at the moment? Woman: Yes. Roy Fields: Okay, turn to the audience. Okay. And you said both ears you had hearing aids in, right? Since three years old. Woman: Right. Roy Fields: Okay. So just hold. Yes, okay. Turn around, just so you can’t see me. Okay. Can you hear me now? Woman: Yes, I can. Yes, I can hear you. Roy Fields: Can you hear me? Woman: Yes, I can. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Wow. Roy Fields: That was unbelievable. Gordon, that was the first time in my ministry that I’ve ever had somebody that was deaf in their ears with hearing aids. And I turned to my wife, and I went, “Wow.” Like, I’ve never had that happen. I’ve done some other things, but I’ve never had that happen. GORDON ROBERTSON: You’re going to see more and more of it. Roy Fields: I’m looking forward to it. GORDON ROBERTSON: You’re going to see more and more. You’re about to sing a song for us called “We Are the Generation.” Roy Fields: Yes. GORDON ROBERTSON: What’s the significance of that? Roy Fields: Well, right before the revival, I was in the studio, and I was recording “In the Presence of Angels.” And the first night in the studio, I went to sleep, that night, staying overnight. And I got woken up by a dream. And I saw thousands of people holding hands going back and forth, saying, “We are the generation who will stand and fight.” And I heard the melody. So like I said in the other broadcast, I hear things, and I just go with it. I don’t try to sit and write. And I sat down at the keyboard, and it just came. And little did I know that that song would be a pivotal song in the Lakeland Revival. And sure enough, in fact, I was standing on stage in the Civic Center, and the Lord reminded me when He showed me that song. And He says, “You remember when you saw the thousands like this?” He goes, “Look out.” And there were the thousands going, “We are the generation,” with tears coming down their eyes. GORDON ROBERTSON: Are we still the generation? Roy Fields: Yes, we are the generation. GORDON ROBERTSON: We’re going to still do it? Roy Fields: Absolutely. GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. As the market has improved, the value has returned to near its original value, but I want out. I cannot risk another market drop. Someone told me to purchase fixed annuities, so my investment would be secure. Is that true? And what are fixed annuities?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Fixed annuities are insurance contracts, where an insurance company will in exchange for a premium or for a fixed amount up front then agree to pay you out in fixed monthly or annual installments. And these investment vehicles, if you want to call them that, are primarily for those who are unable to make their own investment decisions. So it’s really been used for minors or it’s been used for those who are disabled. S that’s been the primary market for these kinds of investment vehicles. If you had them in the past two years, you were the absolute winner. These things have really paid in the market decline and have been wonderful things. So if you look out for an uncertain stock market future or uncertain bond future or uncertain certificate of deposit future, a fixed annuity may make sense for you.
