I’m back. Gordon did a wonderful job during the telethon. I want to appreciate and thank all of our partners who contributed in this telethon we just finished. It was magnificent. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It really was. And we’ll be able to bring you wonderful stories of all of the things that you’ve made possible by your giving. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, anyhow, we’re ready to go again. President Obama’s plan to overhaul America’s health care system is getting a shot in the arm. The Senate Finance Committee is set to approve one version of the plan called “The Baucus Bill.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: But health care reform still has a long way to go before it becomes law. John Jessup has the story from Washington. HEALTH JOHN JESSUP: Months of work and failed bipartisan negotiation now boil down to 13 Democrats and ten Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee. The bill is expected to pass along party lines in today's vote, bringing health care reform, President Barack Obama's number one domestic priority, much closer to reality. The bill would extend insurance coverage to nearly all Americans, limit co-pays and prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. But it comes with an estimated 829 billion dollar price tag over ten years and is paid for by cuts to Medicare providers and new taxes on insurance companies. On the eve of the vote, the insurance industry released a report that showed the bill would actually raise the annual premium for a typical family of four by 4,000 dollars a year and said the measure would actually drive up health care costs because the proposed penalties on Americans without insurance aren't stiff enough to force them to buy in. Karen Ignagni (America’s Health Insurance Plans): If you don't have everybody in the pool, you have a situation where people are encouraged to purchase only when they need it. JOHN JESSUP: The White House and its allies fired back, describing the study as “hard to take seriously,” “self-serving,” and a “hatchet job,” especially after the insurance lobby said this at the White House seven months ago: Karen Ignagni: You have our commitment to play, to contribute and to help pass health care reform this year. JOHN JESSUP: The last-minute rift gives Republicans more ammunition to oppose the proposals when the debate hits the Senate floor. Sen. George LeMieux ([R] Florida): We in the Congress have a duty to tackle this problem, but the solution we settle upon should not be rushed, and the solution should not be worse than the problem we are trying to solve. JOHN JESSUP: Today’s vote advances universal health care reform farther than it has come in decades, joining four other congressional committees that have already produced health care legislation. Now, there are major differences among all five bills that need to be ironed out, namely the public option. It is supported by liberal Democrats, not so much by moderate Democrats and certainly not Republicans. The public option is included in every version except for the one coming out of today's committee vote. John Jessup, CBN News, Capitol Hill. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, John. Terry, this thing is iniquitous. It is going to do vast damage to our health system. It’s going to cost a huge amount of money, close to a trillion dollars. And it’s going to force people to do things. Before long, they’re going to put criminal penalties in. If you don’t have health insurance, you can go to jail. The thing is just filled with problems. And ladies and gentlemen, people write me and write us, and they say, “Well, what can we do about this, that and the other?” Well, I tell you what you can do about it. You can get on the phone and call your senator or your congressman or you can write them or you can e-mail them or you can do all three. But you’ve got to express your point of view now. If you don’t do it, this thing is going through. And it sounds so nice. Health care reform. Well, sure, we want health care reform, but not the way the government wants to do it. It is dangerous. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, this is flawed enough that it sounds like those who the whole thing is being proposed for will not in the end wind up with what they need. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, what they do, they tell you in public, “Well, it’s going to do A, B, C and D,” and everybody says, “Hey, that’s good. A, B, C and D sounds123 very nice.” But they don’t tell you about E, F, G and on down the line about all these little committees that they’re going to form and all the extra taxes and all the other mandates. It is just dangerous and it shouldn’t be done. It’s been rushed through to satisfy the President. And he has sort of a socialist bent in his background, and this is coming out in this particular legislation. So get on the horn, folks, if you care about it. If you don’t care, hey, that’s fine. You can suffer. 202-224—let me get that number up again, please—3121. That’s the Congress Capitol Hill Switchboard. Let them hear from you. It’s dangerous. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It really can be. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Well, the American people have got to speak out. But unfortunately, you’ve got a Democrat liberal President. You’ve got a liberal majority Democrats in the Congress. And there’s nothing to stop them. That’s what’s so dangerous. Well, Rifqa Bary is going back to court. We’ve told you about this case in past programs. A judge could decide if she and her custody case will remain in Florida or head back to Ohio. Bary is the 17-year-old who converted from Islam to Christianity and ran away from home in fear of being the victim of an Islamic honor killing. Efrem Graham is following her case. BARY EFREM GRAHAM: It's been more than two months since 17-year-old Rifqa Bary boarded a bus in downtown Columbus, Ohio and made her way to Orlando, Florida with a passionate plea for help. Rifqa Bary (Christian Convert): They have to kill me. My blood is now halal, which means that because I am now a Christian and I am from a Muslim background, it is an honor. If they love God more than me, they have to do this. EFREM GRAHAM: Bary told a Florida court she lived in fear for her life and her father threatened her after discovering she'd converted from Islam to Christianity. Her story soon gained national attention, and it surprised many, but not Bary's Christian friends, who knew her secret for years. Adrianna Mancillas (Friend): She was scared her dad would find out, that her parents would find out. And sometimes she would talk about being afraid of going back to Sri Lanka, being sent back. EFREM GRAHAM: Friends like Adrianna Mancillas are now worried what will happen next. Rifqa's parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary, have filed have filed a claim against her in Ohio in an attempt to return jurisdiction from Florida to Ohio. And courts in both states will convene in a teleconference that could decide her fate. Adrianna Mancillas: What she wants is not to be separated from her family. That is not what she wants. This whole thing is about her being able to worship Jesus. She loves God. And she loves her friends. She loves her family. But above all she just wants to do God’s will. EFREM GRAHAM: Efrem Graham, CBN News. PAT ROBERTSON: We had the awful scandal of a young boy being returned because of the Attorney General Janet Reno who decided she should go back to communism, and he wound up being forcibly converted, I guess, into the communist way of life under Fidel Castro. Ladies and gentlemen, we just can’t have this. We can’t turn over a 17-year-old to get killed. There is no doubt that the Muslims use honor killing. There is no question about it. They kill girls who have maybe been raped. They kill girls who perhaps have decided not to marry the person that was given to them by their fathers. But this thing is awful. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, a young girl doesn’t run away from her family for no reason. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, of course not. TERRY MEEUWSEN: She is obviously fearful. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I’m shocked that we would even consider this. And so anyhow, we’ll have a full report on the Bary court hearing on tomorrow’s 700 Club. And now I understand John Jessup has more in our news. WHITE HOUSE V FOX NEWS JOHN JESSUP: Pat, one of President Obama's top aides is accusing Fox News of acting like a wing of the Republican party. White House Communications Director Anita Dunn told the New York Times, “We're going to treat them the way we would treat an opponent, as they undertake a war against Barack Obama and the White House. We don't need to pretend this is the way that legitimate news organizations behave.” Fox News execs have fired back, saying, “Instead of governing, the White House continues to be in a campaign mode, and Fox News is the target of their attack mentally.” Fox News has seen record ratings since President Obama took office, up 20 percent over a year ago. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Fox News is smoking the opposition. They have, I think, O’Reilly and Sean Hannity have bigger ratings than MSNBC and CNN and some of these others combined. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. It’s kind of an amazing thing to me. We’ve always had strong debate in journalism in America. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Yes. Yes. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But when it’s the opposing view of the party that’s in office, this is somehow seen as unusual. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I’m shocked that the New York Times or the Washington Post or any of these other that are so liberal, they should defend the right of free speech and free press. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Absolutely. PAT ROBERTSON: And one of the hallmarks of a free press is that they stand in opposition to power. Isn’t that that slogan of the left? Speaking of the truth to power. That’s the big thing. Well, if they want to speak the truth, if they disagree with Barack Obama, well, what is wrong with that? It makes them the enemy? Well, yes. A lot of news media in my opinion are the enemy to what we’ve been doing. TERRY MEEUWSEN: If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. PAT ROBERTSON: But that’s part of the game. And sure, they have their point of view. The media anymore isn’t balanced. Fox always wasn’t being fair and balanced. It’s probably more fair and balanced than some of these others. The New York Times is nothing but a left wing sheet that is in large measure controlled by liberals or homosexuals. It is remarkable. It’s true. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we’re seeing that nowadays if you disagree . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you’re cut out by . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: . . . . you’re cited. PAT ROBERTSON: But the President is the president of everybody. And the White House belongs to all of us. It doesn’t belong to one party. It doesn’t belong to one man. And I think in terms of the press it’s got to be accessed from everybody. But in any event, they’re showing their true colors. And I hope by campaign time the American people will wise up to it. John, you’ve got some more. PAK. NUCLEAR WORRIES JOHN JESSUP: Pat, a deadly weekend attack on Pakistan's army headquarters is causing concern about the security of nuclear weapons there. A Taliban strike force killed 14 people and took dozens hostage in the attack. Pakistani commandos ended the siege. Pakistan is thought to have between 70 and 90 nuclear weapons. The missile sites are heavily guarded, and the warheads are electronically locked. But some experts worry that the Taliban could forge ties with scientists at the site and gain access to those weapons. NO ISRAELI WAR TRIALS JOHN JESSUP: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will not allow any Israeli soldier or leader to face war crimes trial. In a speech to the Knesset, Netanyahu blasted a UN report accusing Israel of war crimes during last winter’s conflict in Gaza. He said there is no way Israel’s commanders and soldiers can be called war criminals when they bravely defended the country against terrorist rocket attacks. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to push for a UN vote on the report, which could lead to war crimes prosecutions. Pat, back to you. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, thanks, John. Ladies and gentlemen, the Bible is very clear, if you read the prophet Zechariah, that in the last days the nations of the earth will be coming against Israel. There will be a concerted effort of the nations, not just one, but all the nations. And recently, there was a vote in the UN. The United States, instead of opposing it, abstained, the first we have abstained from one of these anti-Israel votes. And it was a condemnation of Israel. Well, why? Why? Because Israel is a representative of God’s Word on earth. It is a declaration, if you will, the prophecy is true. As Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli told Queen Victoria, “The evidence of God is the Jew.” And it is the evidence of God. And if the Jews are exterminated in Israel, then it will say God doesn’t exist. So it’s very important. This isn’t just some human thing. It is satanic. It is devilish in opposition to these people. And the time is coming very soon when all the nations of the earth will be gathered against Israel. There is no question about it. And it’s building up. Prophecy is being fulfilled before our very eyes. John. STOCKS JOHN JESSUP: Back here at home, the Dow is closing in on 10,000 again after a powerful rally. And many analysts believe the move is far from over. But some investors still have concerns after the recent bear market. Carolyn Castleberry has that story. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: For Ellen Flynn, the word investing is synonymous with fear. Her former financial advisor invested one-third of her income in a feeder fund tied to convicted felon, Bernard Madoff. She lost it all. Ellen Flynn (Investor): I really thought I just need to be able to touch this money and feel secure about it. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: Now her new financial advisor has convinced Ellen to put her money back in the market and invest long term in diversified mutual funds. Good advice? Maybe, if time is on your side. M. John Sterba, Jr. (Chairman, Investment Management Advisors, Inc.): I can tell you that 25 years from now, the market is going to be a lot higher than it is today. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: In fact, a study by Brinson, Hood and Beebower looked at the wealthiest investors and concluded that trying to buy low and sell high was responsible for only two percent of their overall performance. Sinking a large amount of money into one stock was responsible for less than five percent. Overall, wealth was generated over time by putting their money in different markets and diversifying. Most financial advisors agree that the stock market rises on average about eight to ten percent per year. Of course, they didn’t see last year coming. So is now the time to reinvest? There's no consensus there. Jeff Kleintop (LPL Financial): Presently, yes, I think stocks offer a very good opportunity, but looking a little further down the road, some caution is warranted. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: So the question, again, is time. There's always an element of risk when investing in stocks, especially if you’re planning for retirement in the next five years. Even now, as the Dow flirts with 10,000 again, some economists fear the country is headed for a deeper recession, where values go down before they go back up. Jeff Kleintop: The stock market is not for everyone. In fact, there have been tremendous gains in the bond market over the course of the last six months. So, keep in mind where you're comfortable, where you can sleep at night. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: If you don’t this money for a decade or more, now may be the time to selectively jump back in. Bargain shop. There's still room for the market to recover, but it could take months to several years before you see that gain. So in this equation, your bottom line really is how much time you have before you’ll need this money. Carolyn Castleberry, CBN News. JOHN JESSUP: Pat, what advice would you give those who are interested in investing in the market? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I have been doing it very well. My advice would have been at the first of the year, whatever you do, don’t panic and get out. Now is the time it’s going to ride, and it’s going to go up, and that’s exactly what’s happened. I have some stocks in one of the portfolios I manage that are up in triple digits. So it had to be. It was such a bad dip, and it had to be coming back. But we’re looking at unemployment that may be hovering at ten percent. And if the Democrats keep on with their anti-business rhetoric and their anti-business initiatives, it could put a body blow into the stock market. But right now, it looks like there is a mountain of cash on the sidelines. And it’s got to look for a home someplace. And it’s not going to find a home in money market or T-bills that are half a percent interest. It just isn’t going to work. So people are coming back into the stock market. There’s just no doubt about it. There is a lot of interest in it. And it will undoubtedly go over 10,000 on the Dow. But beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess. So ladies and gentlemen, it isn’t buy and hold. It hasn’t been for some years, but it certainly isn’t now. It is watch it every day. John, we’ve got some other things I understand that are playing on this. The price of gold, the price of oil, commodities, et cetera. What do you have? GOLD STILL RISING JOHN JESSUP: That’s right, Pat. While some people have been buying stocks, other investors and foreign governments are turning to gold. Both gold and silver have been steadily rising in recent months, with gold hitting new highs well above 1,000 dollars. Some analysts believe the move in gold still has a long way to go, possibly above 3,000 dollars and maybe as high as 6,000 dollars. MORE DOLLAR PROBLEMS JOHN JESSUP: And central banks around the world are moving away from the dollar into other currencies. Bloomberg News reports that they're buying more euros and Japanese yen. Central banks are essentially a national bank, like the US Federal Reserve. International bankers and foreign governments warn that the US government is printing too much money in order to finance huge annual deficits and that cuts value of the dollar. One Italian money manager tells Bloomberg, quote, “In the long run, the US will not be the same powerful country it once was.” Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks very much. And, Terry, there is no doubt about it, the United States dollar is going down. And when it goes down, then it means the price of commodities versus the dollar goes up. Oil, for example, today, the last thing I heard, is about 74 dollars a barrel, so it’s coming back up. I knew that gold was going to go over 1,000 dollars an ounce. Now, it’s about . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: Do you think it still has a long run ahead of it? PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, yes. Well, I don’t know. But this business about 3,000 and 6,000, that’s fanciful nonsense. But the fact that it could hit 2,000 an ounce is very possible. So I think a certain amount of money should be in gold. Gold is, after all, it isn’t dependent on the vagaries of the Federal Reserve system unless they decide they want to take it all away from you like Franklin Roosevelt back in the ‘30s. But nevertheless, ladies and gentlemen, it is a strange market we’re in. And the talk now among some of the insiders that we’re going to a new currency. And the currency will be based on some kind of commodity basket, whether it is going to be timber, whether it’s going to be copper, whether it’s going to be oil. It won’t be gold, because there is not enough gold to supply all the markets. But it will be something. And apparently, the Chinese, the Indians, the Brazilians, they want to move away from the dollar, because our government has acted like a kid in a candy store. They haven’t had any restraint. They have not acted like adults. And they have not managed the world’s currency with the responsibility that they should have. And we’re going to pay the price for that when our currency is no longer the reserve currency of the world. So keep that in mind. And I would move out of dollar assets. What good is a savings account going to be? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, the thing is that there has been no conservative measure in that, and there still isn’t. We don’t see it coming to a conclusion at all. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, nothing will stop Obama and his crowd from wasting money. They just keep on spending like there’s no tomorrow. I don’t know what they’re trying to do. That was Franklin Roosevelt’s mantra, tax and tax and spend and spend. That’s the way they kept on getting elected. It’s very dangerous. And so the value of the dollar, the dollar used to be worth 100 cents. Now it’s maybe worth eight cents from what it was 40 years ago. It’s just down to—and so you can’t buy as much with it. And those dollars in your pocket—well, anyhow. Hold on to your hat and be informed, ladies and gentlemen. Be informed as to what’s going on. “The wise man sees the danger and hides himself. The fool goes on and is punished.” That’s what the Bible says. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, up next, it’s church without the church. Man: The church has lost its ability to engage the community, because we’ve built buildings, and then we’ve retreated behind the stained glass windows, so to speak. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the Bible says that, “He that is the greatest among you, let him be the servant of all.” And the best way for the church to prove that it’s qualified to lead is through service. So in Portland, Oregon, the churches got together, and they said, “We’re going to have a season of service,” churches coming together not to preach, but to do whatever they can to help the poor. Paul Strand has this story. FOCUS: SEASON OF SERVICE PAUL STRAND: In Portland, churches have united by the hundreds, and they have laid aside differences with the officials of this ultra-secular city. It’s all so they can concentrate together on serving their town’s needy. And the Season of Service, as they call it, is not just for a day or a week, but for two years now. Kevin Palau (Luis Palau Association): To mobilize 26,000 people from 500 churches to serve not just on one day, but over a long period of time. That has really broken down a lot of negative stereotypes in this very un-churched part of the country. PAUL STRAND: The recession has stripped budgets for many city services, so churches have teamed up and rushed in to fill the gap. Mobile units are taking doctors and dentists to help the uninsured. Members are feeding the homeless. They’re adopting public schools and doing the sort of sprucing up and landscaping those schools can no longer afford. Ron Johansen (Clear Creek Community Church): We love them and we want them to know that we care for them, so that's what we're doing. PAUL STRAND: Kevin Palau, son of famed evangelist Luis Palau, is helping to pioneer this Season of Service concept. He says the lavish, unselfish service becomes a witness in itself. Kevin Palau: It's given an entirely different view of who are these people that claim to follow Christ. PAUL STRAND: Co-laborer Milan Homola pushed hard with Palau to get all the churches to work together, not just because they could do so much more united, but because of the powerful witness. Milan Homola (Compassion Connect): God really does call the churches to be one as a way to proclaim the Gospel. PAUL STRAND: And here is a key point. The churches offer their serving to Portland with no strings attached, no guaranteed shot at evangelizing or witnessing aloud to those served. Milan Homola: We have to earn the right to be heard. And to do that you have to show that you care for a whole person, a whole community, that is, not just the spiritual. PAUL STRAND: Here is the church, here is the steeple, open it up, and where are all the people? Here in Portland, Oregon, they’re out in the community. They’re out here. Kevin Palau: And you get out and build genuine relationships, which means you're not necessarily hammering home the specific message of Christ every conversation. I mean, if we were doing that with our neighbors, people would quickly say, “Get this guy away from me.” PAUL STRAND: Pastors Eric Bahme and David Walmer of Eastside Foursquare wanted a radical change, because they felt the normal church model is irrelevant. Sr. Pastor Eric Bahme (Eastside Foursquare): The church has lost its ability to engage the community, because we’ve built buildings, and then we’ve retreated behind the stained glass windows, so to speak. PAUL STRAND: Their church broke the mold by buying, moving into and operating a hotel that used to be one of Portland’s most drug infested locations. Pastor David Walmer (Eastside Foursquare): Every guest is treated as though they were Christ, and so that raises the level of customer service up very, very high. PAUL STRAND: And often opens the door to sharing Jesus. Pastor David Walmer: Our service for people gives us entrée into their lives to speak the Gospel. Sr. Pastor Eric Bahme: We've had more than 1,500 people receive Christ now since we've been operating the hotel. PAUL STRAND: As part of its contribution to Season of Service, the church threw open its hotel pool and courtyard to the public this day. Christian bands and singers provided entertainment. Those attending jammed backpacks with supplies for needy students. A big truck stood open to receive donated food. And the joy of serving and giving has so caught on here that food flooded in by the tons. In fact, so much food was coming in at this event, even us reporters had to stop and help. Portland’s openly gay mayor admits the Christian efforts have totally surprised him and others in City Hall. Now, these Portlanders hope congregations everywhere start to unite and copy what’s working here. Kevin Palau: We're saying why not do it with as many churches as possible? Go to your mayor, go to your city council, and officially ask the question, “How can we serve?” PAUL STRAND: Portlanders recently took the concept to Africa. They linked up with 350 churches and the government in Kigali, Rwanda to serve its desperately poor. Then they put on a big festival where some 5,000 people gave their hearts to Christ. And in Portland, last year’s Season of Service wrapped up with a huge festival where some 2,000 made decisions for Christ. The loving deeds had witnessed as loud, if not louder, than words. Kevin Palau: Wouldn't it be great if when people thought of a Christian ten years from now, it's, “Those people, you cannot stop them from loving their neighbor as themselves.” PAUL STRAND: Here in Portland, they are definitely exploring a new form of evangelism. But that doesn't mean that Jesus Christ isn't getting preached. It just means that maybe a whole new group of people are finally going to listen. Paul Strand, CBN News, reporting from Portland, Oregon. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: I hope that catches on around the country. Isn’t that marvelous? TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think it is wonderful, amazing, and the church as it’s meant to be. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s just a great concept. PAT ROBERTSON: Servants. Servants. He that is the servant is the one who is going to be first of all. The servant, he who serves everybody. As Jesus said, “I’ve come to serve. I haven’t come to be served, but to serve and give My life as a ransom for everybody.” That’s the model. What’s next? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, coming up, the night Mary Scanlon decided to kill herself. For three days, Mary Scanlon was beaten, drugged and tortured. But when she was rescued by the cops, things actually got worse. MARY SCANLON DEBBIE WHITE: Childhood conjures up memories of love and protection. Not for Mary Scanlon. Mary’s relationship with her mother made growing up in Minnesota more like a nightmare. Mary Scanlon: If she couldn’t get the comb or brush through my hair a lot of times, I’d end up with it being broken over my head. As a kid, when you’re having things that are broken over your head, the more that you’re hit over your head, you start getting more and more broken inside. I felt very unwanted, very unloved, abandoned, rejected. There were many, many times that I was told that I should have never been born. DEBBIE WHITE: Mary didn’t care who her friends were, as long as they made her feel like she belonged. Mary Scanlon: The kids that wanted to accept me were the wrong crowd, and so I grasped at that because they were showing me attention. DEBBIE WHITE: As an 11-year-old, Mary took her first drink, but soon alcohol wasn’t enough. By 12, she was smoking marijuana, and in her teens, she began using cocaine and LSD. And Mary’s poor choices weren’t limited to drugs and alcohol. Mary Scanlon: I was so desperate. You’d be amazed what desperation can do to a person. And so I chose the wrong men to be with and found out the hard way after being beat or verbally abused or abandoned or whatever, that all it did was cause a lot more pain. DEBBIE WHITE: By 23 she had been married, had three children and divorced. For a while, she quit using drugs because of her kids, but she still drank daily. Mary began dating a drug dealer who got her hooked on methamphetamines. Mary Scanlon: The one thing I can tell you about meth is that there’s only two ways it makes you feel: either homicidal or suicidal. But it takes such a hold of you that quick. DEBBIE WHITE: One day a rival drug dealer kidnapped Mary. He assumed she was a police informant and took her to his trailer for questioning. For three days tortured her. He laced her water with large doses of methamphetamines, hoping she would talk. It didn’t work and finally he gave up. Mary Scanlon: After he had overdosed me on the meth, he dumped me off back at my apartment in Princeton, which is where the police found me babbling incoherently. I was crouched in a corner. DEBBIE WHITE: Mary was taken to a mental hospital. Child services took her children away and placed them in foster care. After three days, she was released. Mary Scanlon: I could not deal with my children being taken from me. I had lost all my income at that point because of the meth that I had been doing. I lost my income, my family, my friends, my home. I was just about to lose my home, my apartment, everything. And I didn’t have anything left. And so I dealt with it the only way that an addict would know how to deal with it. I went out on a drinking binge. I got pulled over for my second DUI in less than six months, and I was brought right to jail. And so I remember thinking, “I just don’t want to do this anymore. I just want to die. I don’t have anything left. I just might as well just give it up.” And there was nothing left of me. DEBBIE WHITE: She was planning her suicide when another inmate invited Mary to a chapel service. Mary was skeptical, but agreed to go. Mary Scanlon: They began this church service telling me about a God by the name of Jesus who would accept me for who I was. And I remember looking at her and telling her, “Lady, you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m too dirty for your God. I’m too full of sin. There’s no way your God would accept me.” And she looked right back at me and she said, “You don’t know our Jesus.” And so when I got back to my cell, all I could think about was the words that the lady was telling me at the church service. And I remember thinking, “I want to believe what she said so bad.” And I said, “Okay, Jesus. If you really do exist, come on in and save me.” And He did. The only thing that I can tell you to describe what happened next is that little tiny cell was filled with such a presence of the Lord, of Jesus, that all I could do was just drop to my knees. And I just started crying and crying and crying. And I heard the audible voice of the Lord and what He told me as He was holding me was that, “I don’t care what your sin was. All I care is that you came to Me.” And then you couldn’t keep me away from those church services. They saw the change in me immediately. They were like, “Wow! What happened to her?” And I’m like, “I’ve got the Lord. You know what, I’ve got to tell you all, He’s alive. He’s real. I’ve got to tell you what happened to me.” DEBBIE WHITE: But that was just the beginning of the changes to come. Mary Scanlon: One of the first things the Lord did, because I was looking at violations of probation and all these charges, and I was looking at a year and a day, which would have been women’s prison. And He took that year and a day and He gave me 40 days to do it. DEBBIE WHITE: Five months later Mary received a phone call from Child Services. It was a miracle she never thought possible. Mary Scanlon: And the woman says, “We don’t know why we’re doing this. It goes against our recommendations and against the judges’ recommendations. But we’re going to court order your children back home.” And I lost it. I cried and cried like a baby and just got on my knees. And I was just thanking the Lord, because I knew there was no way my children were coming back home for any other reason other than the Lord intervened. DEBBIE WHITE: With God’s help, Mary immediately quit drugs and alcohol and began to rebuild her life. She’s been clean for ten years. Mary Scanlon: That void, that hole I felt inside of me all that time, growing up and feeling rejected, abandoned, unloved and unwanted, all of that was filled the moment that I came to know the Lord Jesus and received Him as my Savior. It was just like I was just complete then. The one thing that nobody could ever take from me is my conversion to Christianity and my relationship, the closeness that I have with the Lord Jesus. And that’s what I cling to. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT MINISTERS PAT ROBERTSON: You may have a big hole in your heart, just like Mary did. There may be something that you’re looking for. Maybe you’ve been looking for it since you were a child. You felt rejected. People have turned against you. Maybe your mother and father have turned against you, and you feel alone and rejected. You want to commit suicide. You say, “I can’t stand life any longer.” And sure, you may have tried drugs and you may have tried alcohol and you may have tried sex. You may have tried all these things. And nothing satisfied. And suddenly, Jesus is there at the door of your heart, and He’s knocking, and He said, “If you’ll let Me come in, I will fill the void in your heart. I will give you a new hope and a new life, and I will make you Mine. And whatever you’ve done in the past, I’ll clean it up. I’ll forgive you. I’ll absolutely forgive you, as if nothing has ever happened. As far as the east is from the west, that’s how far I’m going to take your sins from you. You will be Mine, and I will be yours from this moment on.” Would you like that? You’d be a fool to turn it down. Mary did, and Mary says it was the most important thing in her life. You can say the same thing, too. Jesus Christ is alive, and He loves you. He loves you beyond anything you can comprehend. And you say, “Well, I’m too dirty for Him.” No, you’re not. He will cleanse you, wash you, make you whole and make you one of His saints. All you have to do is ask Him. Now, I’m going to lead you in a prayer. And if you’ll pray with me, Jesus will hear, and He will answer. Just pray these words. “Lord Jesus Christ.” That’s right. Pray with me. “Lord Jesus Christ, you know me. You know what’s gone in my life. You know the way I’ve been hurt. You know the things that I’ve done to hurt others. You know the despair that’s there and the hopelessness. And Jesus, right now, I know there is hope in you. And so I turn to you and I say Jesus, hear me. Come into my heart. Live your life in me, and I will live for you and I will serve you all the days of my life. Thank you, Jesus, that you’ve heard my prayer. The governor of California has signed two bills into law that provide benefits for married same-sex couples. One bill recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states during the five months last year that gay marriage was legal in California. The other bill provides domestic partnership benefits for gay couples married in other states after Californians rejected same-sex marriage through Proposition 8. Conservative critics say the governor’s action undermines the will of the people since the state’s voters did pass Prop 8 last November, defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. CHURCH GIVES UP CHURCH JOHN JESSUP: St. Luke Anglican Church, a Los Angeles congregation that broke away from the Episcopal denomination, is giving up its property. A California judge ordered the move, and the state Supreme Court refused an appeal. The congregation voted on the split three years ago after the national church ordained an openly gay bishop. It’s now a part of the New Anglican Church in North America. Some 200 breakaway churches are currently fighting for their property. St. James Church in Newport Beach recently lost a bid to have the Supreme Court hear its case. Many observers predict the high court will eventually take up the issue. And we’re going to take some time to answer those right now. Pat, Barbara says, “Dear Pat, can young Christians be harassed by Satan with suicidal thoughts?” PAT ROBERTSON: Absolutely, they can. I write to you young men because you are strong and you have overcome the evil one. Actually, there is more temptation and more satanic things thrown at the young than probably any other group. And, of course, young people are more prone to suicide, because they don’t know who they are. “Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going?” And they’re fighting with their parents, and they’re moving into puberty, and they’ve got all these hormones raging. They don’t know what to do. And they don’t have the comfort of being in a family that they’re the head of, or part of. But absolutely, Satan can give them suicidal thoughts, and many of them do. Many of them commit suicide. It’s a highly prevalent thing among teenagers. TERRY MEEUWSEN: A sad truth. Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: It is. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Joyce, who says, “I would like to know, can it be God’s plan for some of us to remain unmarried? For years, I’ve been praying for a God fearing man to come into my life, but to no avail. I attend church, but there are no eligible men my age at my church, nor have I met the right person at work. I feel like I’m just not meant to have a companion. Could this be true?” PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t have a clue as to whether you should have a companion. The Bible says that the Lord will put the single people in families. He said He puts us in families. But maybe He’s got an extended family for you, not just one spouse. It looks like to me, though, if you pray, God might bring the right one along. But is He not intending you to get married? I don’t know. But it’s possible. Let’s face it, if you’re, say, 30, and you’re going to live to 80, that gives you 50 years. Really. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Keep hoping, Joyce. Keep hoping. PAT ROBERTSON: When the 50 years are over, though, what happens? You’re going to die, and then you’re going to be with Jesus forever and ever. So the forever and ever is what’s important. All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is Douglas, who says, “Pat, the other day while listening to a radio talk show, a question came up about staying in fellowship with God after we become Christians. Can Christians ever get out of fellowship with God?” PAT ROBERTSON: Well, sure they can. People who have gone out from the Lord and they have turned their back on God and then they have come back into fellowship with the Lord. They commit sin, and when they commit sin, they shut off the presence of God in their life. So if you start willfully sinning, you will be out of fellowship with God. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, and sometimes the Word talks about us being lukewarm and how God hates that, that we may know Him, know about Him, go through the motions, but not really work the relationship. PAT ROBERTSON: He said, “It makes Me want to vomit you out of My mouth.” All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Helen, who says, “Is taking a vacation unspiritual? Are personal vacations where you do nothing but relax at a different location against the Lord?” PAT ROBERTSON: Heavens no. The Bible says Jesus was out working hard with His disciples, and He said, “Let’s go apart to a quiet place and rest for a while.” So that’s in the Bible. But absolutely, vacations are important. And vacations someplace else where you can be quiet and get away from the humdrum life. Jesus withdrew all the time to a solitary place that He’d pray. So He didn’t just hang out all the time with the crowds. It’s very wearing on somebody to be in the presence of a lot of people making demands on you all the time. You have to get away. So that’s not a question of is it a good thing. It’s a necessity. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is Maddy, who says, “As a mother of young children, I would like to know how old children need to be in order to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit?” PAT ROBERTSON: Three, four. As soon as they’re sensitive to what God is doing, they can be touched by the Holy Spirit. You look at Samuel, God was speaking to him. I don’t know how old Samuel was. He was just a little boy. Was he six, seven, five? There is no doubt that at that age, young children can be filled with the Holy Spirit, have visions, have dreams, be caught up to be with the Lord. I think that Jesus said, “Their angels always behold the face of My Father which is in Heaven. And suffer the little children to come unto Me, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.” So I think little children, if they’re open to God, they’re candidates. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I agree. I agree. And we’re having a really great time. TERRY MEEUWSEN: That is awesome. You had it all as a kid, and yet inside of you, you already knew at that point in your life that there had to be something more. Tell me about that. Debbie Klongtruadroke: Yes. There was a big, big hole, just a big gap in my heart, because I knew that everything that I was seeking was not the answer. I had a great education, parents that loved me, that took great care of me. I was modeling. I was acting. I was in the entertainment business. And I was doing pretty good. TERRY MEEUWSEN: So you had a lot of exposure. Yes. Debbie Klongtruadroke: Yes, I did. And yet all that fame did not help fill that gap. And so I just knew there was something, there was more to life than just that. And that’s how I came to know Jesus. He was the only one that was able to fill that hole and to satisfy me to the uttermost. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Debbie Klongtruadroke: Yes. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Now, you’re hosting the CBN 700 Club version in Thailand and telling people about the satisfaction you found in Jesus every day. How did that come about, your hosting that program? Debbie Klongtruadroke: It was really interesting. I did not even know CBN. But when they came to Thailand, I got to meet them, and I got to talk to them. And I was a guest on the show a couple of times. And then I started doing interviews. And then I started hosting. And to me, it was just so humbling that out of 60 million people, God would choose me to share the precious Gospel of Jesus Christ to the unreached people there. And it’s amazing that we can reach millions through one program. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Technology is an amazing thing. It has lots of opportunities for all of the things that you sometimes are concerned about with it. It has many opportunities to open doors. Debbie Klongtruadroke: Exactly. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Today, you’re also participating in a new program that CBN is producing. And you’re a part of that. Tell me about that. Debbie Klongtruadroke: That’s another very God thing that happened, Superbook. It’s always been such an amazing tool that God has used throughout the world and throughout cultural barriers. This is quite a wonderful project and a quite a wonderful adventure. Your father actually grew up as a Buddhist. How did he and your family then come to know Christ? Debbie Klongtruadroke: Oh, it’s amazing, because we came to know Christ in a Buddhist nation. Go figure. That’s so God. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, it is. Debbie Klongtruadroke: He was introduced to Christ by a friend, and he had known about the Gospel, but he had never made a commitment and say, “You know what, I believe that you are the only God, and I’m going to give my life to you.” But there were certain things that had happened in his life that really brought him to his knees and just acknowledge the Almighty God. And so he did accept Jesus as his personal Savior, and he started taking us to church. And all of a sudden, all of us, one by one, got born again, and that was it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amazing. Amazing. And God has used your international background then as you’ve grown up in the love and admonition of the Lord to share the message of His love with people in many nations, through your music, through your television work, through the testimony that you bring when you share. And we just want to say thank you to you for your faithfulness. It’s been awesome. Debbie Klongtruadroke: Thank you for allowing me to do so.
