UnderWing Transcripts PO Box 16282 Clearwater, Florida 33766 540 455-2333 / UnderWing@underwingtranscripts.com ________________________________________ The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Thursday, October 15, 2009 PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. And, folks, it looks like happy days are here again on Wall Street, not necessarily on Main Street. But the professionals watched the Dow Jones close over 10,000 for the first time this year. KRISTI WATTS: But, Pat, analysts say it shows that the economy has recovered from the recession, and many believe the rally isn’t over yet. Here is reporter Jennifer Wishon with that story. MARKET JENNIFER WISHON: After months of gloom, Wall Street is jubilant once again. The news came as a relief since the last time the Dow saw the 10,000 mark, it was on the way down. The milestone represents a 53 percent comeback for the Dow since March when stocks were at their lowest levels in more than ten years. David Wyss (Chief Economist, Standard and Poors): Well, 10,000, let's face it, it's basically a psychological barrier. JENNIFER WISHON: It's also the best barometer of the stock market and indicates investors believe the economy is bouncing back after the worst recession since the Great Depression. Jonathan Corpina (Trader, Meridian Equity Partners): We are seeing that earnings are profitable, they're going to continue to be profitable, and the outlook is good. JENNIFER WISHON: And it's not just stocks. The outlook is also good for gold which hit a record high, more than 1,070 dollars an ounce Wednesday. But while stocks and gold rise, the dollar keeps falling, hitting its lowest level against the Euro in more than a year. The lower dollar does help American businesses overseas by making products cheaper. And that helps boost stocks. In a recent meeting, the Federal Reserve estimated the economy has picked up and Wall Street is reacting to companies like JP Morgan, Chase and Intel posting better than expected third quarter profits. Although many people on Main Street are still hurting, cheers on Wall Street are a good sign because, while the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator of economic health, the stock market is a leading indicator. Jonathan Corpina: We are very happy with what we're seeing, and investors are feeling like we are moving in the right direction to economic recovery. JENNIFER WISHON: Confidence is just what retailers want consumers to have as they approach the holiday buying season. Jennifer Wishon, CBN News, Washington. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Jennifer. And ladies and gentlemen, I told you here, maybe as much as a year ago or whenever it was, that the stock market would come back. I don’t know if I advised as I should have, but for my own situation, I didn’t dump out stocks. That was a terribly unwise thing, because it was going to come back, and it came back faster then I think any of us realized. But it was also clear that gold was going to go up and the dollar was going to go down. And that’s the dangerous thing that we’re dealing with, is that the United States dollar is getting trashed by our government. And how soon they’re going to have come back, you see, they’re going to have to restore order sooner or later. And when they begin to tighten, it can be a very painful thing. And the stock market can go over a cliff. So it’s a little early to be popping champagne corks. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. SOCIAL SECURITY COLA LEE WEBB: Pat, thanks a lot. And I like your tie today. If you get a Social Security check each month, don’t expect a cost-of-living adjustment next year. The federal government will not be giving the so-called COLA for the first time in 34 years because of a drop in the inflation rate. Instead, President Obama wants to send 250 dollar checks to 50 million seniors, veterans, retired railroad workers and disabled citizens. He says the money is needed to help them in tough economic times. He won't allow the payments to come out of the Social Security trust fund, but he hasn't said where Congress will find the money. One option: to borrow it, which would only add to the huge federal deficit. OBAMA TRIP LEE WEBB: President Obama is traveling to New Orleans today. He is going to fulfill his campaign promise to survey the city's recovery four years after Hurricane Katrina. Some area residents complained the President’s brief visit is just a glorified flyover. They say it isn’t enough. Still, the White House says it demonstrates the President’s strong commitment to Gulf Coast rebuilding and recovery. MAINE MARRIAGE VOTE LEE WEBB: Gay marriage is on the ballot next month in Maine. Voters will decide whether to veto a new law that legalized it. Gay marriage supporters have raised twice as much as their opponents. Both sides have received many of their donations from out of state, an indication that this vote will have national implications. Tony Perkins (Family Research Council): What takes place here in Maine will have an impact on what other state legislatures will do. You've got Congress looking at the Defense of Marriage Act. The President said he wants to repeal it. LEE WEBB: And the polls indicate the vote will be close. PUBLIC OPTION? LEE WEBB: Some top Senate Democrats are looking for a way to push a public option back in to health insurance reform legislation. The Senate Finance Committee passed a bill without a public option, but liberals in Congress insist on keeping the public option, which would allow the government to sell health insurance. Among the proposals: allowing states to decide whether to offer government care, and using the public option only as a last resort if the cost of private plans gets out of control. But business leaders and conservatives are strongly opposed to a government-run health insurance plan. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the liberals want very badly to take control of large segments of the economy, and this is one that they’re just salivating to get their hands on. They haven’t gotten it yet in that Senate bill, but they want to add it in there. And maybe, maybe, maybe they might fight so much among one another that they don’t get anything passed, which I think would be good news for America. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Interesting, Pat. Well, up next, we have an amazing story. It’s about a group that is actually dedicating to destroying America from the inside. GRAPHIC: SABOTAGING AMERICA We’re going to show you who they are and how to stop them, so stay with us. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: DIAMOND RIO LEE WEBB: Coming up later, a live performance from country music sensation Diamond Rio. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA Pat Boone: Pat Boone here for my good friends at Swiss America, the company that has helped Americans to rediscover gold for over 25 years now. You may have noticed gold prices have more than doubled in the last five years, but do you ever wonder why? Economists say the top five reasons are: a falling dollar, which also creates number two, a rising cost of living. Third, increasing demand for gold worldwide. Fourth, political uncertainty. And fifth, new Wall Street gold funds. It all adds up to higher prices ahead. Gold offers safety first and then profit. A wise economist has said a portfolio without gold is like walking around naked in zero degree temperatures. So don’t get caught in the cold without gold. Call Swiss America now for a free educational kit. Ask about tax free gold IRAs. Seize this rare opportunity today. Call now. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, for nearly two centuries, America honored its Christian heritage, but in recent decades, some have tried to destroy that heritage and turn the United States into a completely secular nation. SET-UP DALE HURD: The battle for the soul and future of America rages on between those trying to preserve America’s Judeo-Christian foundation and those who hate it and have dedicated themselves to destroying it. In his new book, Catholic League President William Donohue calls it “secular sabotage” against America’s cultural and religious traditions. He accuses disaffected liberals of systematically tearing down the traditional values and institutions that have been a part of American fabric since its founding. Donohue says that over four decades the radical secularists have already done a great deal of damage to America that will take decades to fix. And he warns that if they aren’t stopped, the secularists will succeed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOCUS GUEST: BILL DONOHUE PAT ROBERTSON: Well, he’s nothing if he isn’t a fighter. And it’s a pleasure to have Dr. William Donohue with us from the Catholic League. And he’s written this very, very interesting book called Secular Sabotage. Bill, it’s nice to have you here. Tell us what got you going on this book. Bill Donohue: Well, thank you very much. And thank you for all the good work that you’ve done over the years in fighting to keep our Judeo-Christian heritage. What got me going is 16 years of doing this job here, looking at the whole culture and how it attacks Christianity. I decided to put it together. And what I’ve done, I’ve got over 600 different end note citations. This is not an essay. I have the evidence there. And here is the problem: in the past we had the Marxists, the radical leftists. They wanted to tear down capitalism and put in socialism and eventually communism. That idea was inherently flawed. But at least they had a blueprint. Today, we’re stuck with people who are cultural nihilists. They want to annihilate our society. They are intellectually and spiritually and morally bankrupt. They’re totally spent. They have nothing to put in its place. They’re like bratty kids who want to tear down society. And if you want to tear down any society, you go to the culture, not to the economy, not to the government. And the heart of any culture is religion. In this country, it’s called Christianity. PAT ROBERTSON: You’re head of the Catholic League. What have they done in the Catholic Church? You’ve got some rather startling examples in this book of yours. Bill Donohue: Well, what we have already, we see it in Massachusetts and your wonderful lead-in piece. We’re talking about what’s going on with the gay agenda. They’re trying to say in Massachusetts and California that the Catholic Church has to be required in order to get any kind of federal money when it comes to adopting children to allow gays to adopt children. We’re not going to allow gay people to adopt children. That’s against nature. It’s against nature’s God. But they won’t stop. They’re constantly using the ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Whether it’s “in God we trust” or “under God,” they want them excised. You’ve got elements within the Democratic party doing the same kind of thing. There is no question about it, that the tax exempt status of all churches in this country, and that’s mostly Christian, is jeopardized. And I’m not speaking crazy here. Let me be very specific. Dawn Johnson is going to be appointed. Obama wants her. He has nominated her. He wants her to be one of his great lieutenants in running the office of legal counsel. She was involved in a suit in the past. It failed, but she tried to take away the tax exempt status of the Catholic Church, because the Catholic Church is pro-life and anti-abortion. That’s the road we’re going under. PAT ROBERTSON: What about all these scandals in the Catholic Church? You, again, have documented some. Was that part of this secular agenda, to undermine the moral fabric of the church? Bill Donohue: Well, there’s no question. Within the Catholic Church you have a left element, and within the Protestant mainline church. It’s unfortunate that we have these people. I regard them as termites sitting within, trying to eat away the fabric of the Catholic Church. So they lie about it in the Catholic Church. They say, “Oh, we had a pedophilia problem.” It’s been a homosexual problem all along. It’s not my opinion. It’s the actual data from the John Jay Criminal Justice College here in New York City which looked at the data. I’m not saying homosexuality causes predatory behavior. I’m saying that most of the priests who have been predators have been homosexual, and they hit on post-pubescent boys, not minors. So, yes, we’ve got our hands full in the Catholic Church. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you also had a rather scathing analysis of Bishop Spong of the Episcopal Church and what has happened to that denomination. Do you want to go into that? Bill Donohue: The Episcopal people are wonderful Americans, like all Americans are. To see that you’ve had people, like Spong, and others and Pike, they don’t even believe in the divinity of Jesus. They have given up on everything. And instead of just simply saying, “Look, it didn’t work out. I’m going to shift over and become an agnostic,” they stay where they are. They park themselves there just like pro-abortion nuns do in the Catholic Church, because they want to rip away at the fabric. These people are no more Christian than the man on the moon. PAT ROBERTSON: What is underlying this? What’s going on in these people? Why didn’t they just leave the church alone? They’re trying to destroy the church, but what’s motivating them? Bill Donohue: I am so happy that you asked that question, because that’s at the heart of the whole book. These people want sexual libertinism. They think the three most horrible words in the English language are “thou shalt not.” They don’t want to be told anything. And Christianity, beginning with our forefathers, with Jews in the Decalogue, we learn about “thou shalt not.” There are certain things that we can’t do. And the left wingers today, the radical secularists, they know that if they want full blown “genital liberation”—that’s what I call it. They want “sky is the limit; liberty is license.” The biggest stumbling block to their perverted idea of freedom is Christianity. If you can go after the Catholics, you go after the Protestants, and you can weaken them, that’s a roadblock out of their way. Then they can get their way. The whole idea is crazy. This idea of “liberty is license" leads to death, spiritual, physiological and sociological death. They just don’t get it. And we have to fight back. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Bill, thank you for sounding the alarm. And, ladies and gentlemen, this is a fascinating book. It really is. You don’t want to put it down. Secular Sabotage. It’s available where books are sold, and I appreciate Bill Donohue. He’s an outspoken advocate of the moral values we all stand for. Thanks a lot for being with us. Bill Donohue: Thank you so much for having me, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. Kristi has got something more as we continue The 700 Club, some exciting music. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: I do have exciting music, Pat. Coming up: country music’s Diamond Rio. They’ve been riding high for 25 years. GRAPHIC: DIAMOND RIO But actually at one time, the band’s fate was at risk. They’re going to share their amazing story, up next on The 700 Club, so don’t go away. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2: GOLDLINE Jay Johnson (Former Director US Mint): All you have to do is read a newspaper or watch TV to know that millions of us have seen our investments and our nest eggs lose value in these tough economic times. And no one knows how long this will last. Hi, I’m Jay Johnson, former director of the US Mint. I supervised our nation’s gold supply, including Fort Knox. Let’s look at three popular investment choices: stocks, real estate and gold. Stocks have declined. Housing has crashed. Yet, gold has tripled in value since 2001. Some experts, like me, believe gold may reach new record highs due to inflation and the falling dollar. Gold is a safe haven asset that has never dropped to zero. Make gold part of your portfolio. And among the chart toppers is one called “Beautiful Mess.” But as the band will actually tell you, “Beautiful Mess” is more than just a song. It’s their life. SET-UP PIECE RENELLE ROBERTS: Diamond Rio has been on the country music scene for over 20 years. They have sold more than ten million albums and won numerous awards, including three platinum records and 13 Grammy nominations. Then, lead singer Marty Roe’s voice began to deteriorate, and they lost their recording contract. In their book, Beautiful Mess, they share about the miraculous healing of Marty’s voice and how it strengthened their faith and music. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: DIAMOND RIO KRISTI WATTS: Please welcome to The 700 Club the members of Diamond Rio. Yay! First I would like—Marty Roe, thank you so much for being here. Marty Roe: Thank you. KRISTI WATTS: Can you introduce the band to us? Because it’s just too hard for me to remember. I can’t lie. Marty Roe: I can do it. Yes. KRISTI WATTS: All right. Marty Roe: We’ve got Dan Truman over here on the keyboard. KRISTI WATTS: Hey, Dan. Dan Truman: Hi. Marty Roe: And we’ve got Jimmy Olander, electric guitar player over there. And Gene Johnson sings high harmony and plays the mandolin. KRISTI WATTS: Cool. Marty Roe: And then back here in the cage, our drummer, Brian Prout. And Dana Williams over here on bass singing the other harmony part. There you go. KRISTI WATTS: I feel like you missed one person. You need a really, really good backup singer, like me. Marty Roe: Okay. Bring it on. KRISTI WATTS: It’s a thought. Marty Roe: I’ll take it. KRISTI WATTS: I know. Anyway, Marty, we were talking before. You guys have been together for about 25 years, so many number-one hits we can’t even count. But one of the songs that you have now is called “Beautiful Mess,” which I love the title. But where did that come from? Marty Roe: Well, it was about 2003 or 2004, we had that out. Nashville has got great songwriters, and we just thought that it was a fun song, talked about how in every relationship that it’s wonderful, but it always has kind of its ups and downs. And we used that title for the book that we have out, an autobiography called Beautiful Mess. And that was a fun experience, at least some of it. Some of it was not so fun, having to tell some of your struggles and things like that. But we really felt like that’s really where the Lord was calling us to be at this point. So we’ve got it out. We told it, and we’ve got a new CD that goes with it, called The Reason. KRISTI WATTS: Cool. One of the things I am mad impressed about is that you guys have all been together for 25 years, and you guys actually look happy. For 25 years. But you guys have had your own ups and downs and some challenges. And Marty, one of them actually kind of started with you. Not to point the finger at you, Marty, but what happened? Marty Roe: Yes. Well, it does. And I was guilty as charged. I began to have some vocal problems and, long story short, it was caused basically because I had—it wasn’t a physical thing. I went to the doctors and actually almost hoped that it was something like that, but it was really just a neglect of my gift. In our business, there is a lot of pressure. There is a lot of running around doing all kinds of different things that I didn’t really plan on doing besides singing. And so anyway, I was not doing well with my vocal ability, and I learned, God showed me that I had forsaken it, and I had taken it for granted. And I wouldn’t sing unless there was a check involved. Basically, I had lost my passion for it. And that experience, we all went through, and it was about a three-year process. And I had a definite bottom point of brokenness and surrender at a point where I knew that I couldn’t fix it myself. Jimmy calls me one night and says, “I’ve got another vocal coach I’d like for you to see.” It had been like the fourth one now. And I said, “Whatever. I will do it until something else happens or we have to break up or whatever.” I just didn’t know for sure if I was ever going to regain the gift that I had. And we met the next day or so, and we talked a lot. We prayed a little bit. And we vocalized a little. And literally in that day, we experienced a miracle. And the next day we confirmed it. And the next day we confirmed it again. And that problem is gone. And we’ve been revitalized by it I think musically and definitely spiritually. All of us have. We’ve witnessed this. And I think all of us kind of came to our point of surrender at a different place. But we’ve seen the turnaround. And lo and behold, at that same time, we were introduced with a new record label, Word Records, which is a Christian label. And we had the opportunity to do a Christian album and had the opportunity to actually maybe tell the story and give this witness and talk about how God is there in your darkest time and that He will use that if you will allow Him, to glorify Him. KRISTI WATTS: Don’t you love that? Now, as I was listening to you, I could tell you were a little bit choked up, because I think isn’t that so the way that we love the Lord, we know the Lord, we accept Him into our heart, but how we just start living day by day by day by day, the routine. Marty Roe: Yes. We were all Christians. And I grew up a Christian boy. And intellectually I gave God the glory and knew that that gift was from Him. But in my day to day walk, the pressures and just doing, doing, doing all the time, I think my actions were much more selfish, became more self centered. And that’s where the beginning of the problem was. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. Real quick, before I let you sing, how did that affect the band? This was, not to point the finger again, but this was an issue that you had to deal with. But yet it affected everybody. So did they continue to smile and support you, brother? Or were they just like, “Dude, you’re messing us up here.” Marty Roe: For a little while, there was some denial I think on all of our parts. But they were the first to say, “You know what, this has got to stop.” And they came to me. And we ended up—they recorded our songs, recorded our shows, and made me have to sit there and listen to it right after the show. And so the denial didn’t last real long. I had to at least admit that there was a problem. And from that point on, it was still two or three years. It was tough on them. I think it was tougher on them maybe than me, because they were out of control. They couldn’t actually do anything to fix my problem. I had to kind of work on it myself. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. Well, the cool part about it is, you made it through, brother. You made it through. And now you guys have a brand new album, and the album is called . . . . Marty Roe: The Reason. KRISTI WATTS: The Reason. And what’s the reason for the name? Marty Roe: The reason is the first song that Jimmy and I wrote for this project, and we were explaining, trying to explain, why we were here. We knew that some people would ask, “Why are you not doing country now at this point in your life?” And this song kind of, it explained it. And so that’s why we called it that. And we used it. We thought it was a good title. The reason why we’re here is I think God has placed us here at this point in time, and we have something to say. And there is the first single off of it, so hopefully some folks will get something good out of it. KRISTI WATTS: Fantastic. Well, I’m going to stop talking and I’m going to let you sing. In fact, thank you guys all for being here. And once again, remember, if you need a backup singer, I’m here for you. Marty Roe: All right. We’ll call you. KRISTI WATTS: For more information on Diamond Rio, please check out their new autobiography. Which camera am I look at, Pete? I’m looking at this one? Okay. It is called Beautiful Mess. Here we go. It’s the book, and it’s available around the country nationwide. And, of course, you can also pick up a copy of their latest CD, and that is called The Reason. And for a little taste of what you’re going to get, here is Diamond Rio with “God is There.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SONG: “GOD IS THERE” Diamond Rio (Singing): “Surrounded by the darkness . . . . .” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: HOMEWRECKER LEE WEBB: Still ahead, she loved married men . . . . A federal judge in San Francisco has refused to dismiss a lawsuit challenging Proposition 8. Prop 8 is the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in California. Backers of the measure sought to have the suit dismissed. They contend same-sex marriages are a threat to traditional marriages. The plaintiffs contend the amendment discriminates against gays. Federal Judge Vaughn Walker has ordered a trial on whether the measure denies fundamental rights to gays and lesbians. That trial is set for January. ZAZI AL QAEDA CONTACTS JOHN JESSUP: The terror suspect accused of plotting an attack on New York had high level contacts with al Qaeda. Intelligence officials say Najibullah Zazi was contacted by the terrorist group’s leader in Afghanistan. That leader is believed to be one of Osama bin Laden’s confidantes. Prosecutors say al Qaeda recruited Zazi to detonate homemade backpack bombs in New York’s transit system on the anniversary of 9/11. Well, alcohol nearly killed Karen Reagle. One night, as she fumbled for the trigger of her shotgun, it nearly killed her daughter, too. KAREN REAGLE Karen Reagle: I was not a good person. Married men were awesome. You could have a relationship. Nobody told you what to do. And they’d have to go home. So there wasn’t anything that I hadn’t done. If you hit the Ten Commandments, I did them all, every one of them, including murder. Really murder, when you have two abortions, which I did. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: At the time, Karen Reagle didn’t even think about it. The only thing on her mind was her next drink. Karen Reagle: Every time I drank, it was to drink and get drunk, not just have a cocktail. Literally, I was blacking out by the time I was 18. There wasn’t anything about myself that I liked. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: There was just a lot of anger. It started brewing when Karen was a child. Karen Reagle: There was a babysitter who did really horrible things to me. There was an uncle that did things that were wrong. My father left when I was five years old. I literally followed him out the door, got on my three-wheel bike and followed him down the road. He had to pick me up and bring me back and put me in the house. And he told me that night, “I’ll be here to pick you up tomorrow,” because I was a daddy’s girl. I didn’t really get along with my mother. And the next day, he didn’t come and get me. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: It was three years before she finally got to live with her dad. But even that had its challenges. Now, Karen had to compete with her step-mom for her father’s attention. Karen Reagle: I think I took all those things and said, “I’ll do what I want when I want,” and I wanted to be bad. I wanted to hurt people the way that I had been hurt. And what I didn’t understand is I was hurting myself. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: There were lots of suicide attempts. Karen Reagle: I had my stomach pumped at 16, slit my wrist at 18. It was torment to be on this earth. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: Karen thought getting married and having a baby was the answer, but it just made things more difficult. Alcohol destroyed her first marriage. Her addiction got so bad that Karen even neglected her baby girl. Karen Reagle: Once in awhile, if it was early enough, I’d call the girl across the street or the girl next door and say, “Look, Kaitlyn’s sleeping. I’m going to be right down the road.” They knew where I was going to be. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: Then Karen married Ronnie. Things started to fall apart when he asked her to stop drinking. Karen Reagle: I wanted him out of my life, because no one was going to tell me what to do or ask me or care or anything else. ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: One night after a big argument, Karen almost blew her head off with her husband’s shotgun. Karen Reagle: I tried to put my foot in the trigger of the gun. I had both barrels in my mouth, and I was holding it. I was trying. I was trying. I was just too drunk to do it. So I’m like, “Okay, I’ll just go to sleep and give me a few minutes, and then . . . .” ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: And then Ronnie found her, passed out, with his gun pointing directly at their daughter’s bedroom. It was a close call that night, not just for Karen, but for her little girl. Karen Reagle: Then 9/11 happened, and my husband felt very called to go to church. And he was like, “You’re going to church.” I’m like, “I’m not going to church.” He said, “You’re going to church.” I’m like, “No, I’m not.” ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: Ronnie won, and Karen went to church, but very reluctantly. Then after a few Sundays: Karen Reagle: I went, and I sat down on the pew. And I was like, “Okay, I’m going go out and be a pew warmer.” So the music starts, and I’m just like, “La, la, la, la, la.” But as soon as—it’s the shout to the Lord. And I got real quiet. All I heard that day was, “Karen, come to Me.” I don’t know what even possessed me, but I got up, and I went to the altar, and I got on my knees. It was the first time in my life that I said, “I can’t do this. I don’t know how to do this. I only know this life. I don’t know a life without drinking. I don’t know a life without everything that I’m going through.” And again, “Come to Me, and I will love you.” And I said, “Okay, I’ll love you.” The day that I accepted Jesus Christ, I went home and I sat on my porch, and I had like maybe three or four beers, but I didn’t get drunk that night. But it was just like I kept saying, “I’ve got to let this go.” ZSA ZSA PALAGYI: With the help of God and some people at her church, Karen was able to give up alcohol all together. Karen Reagle: I haven’t touched it, and it’s been five years. Now my favorite thing is to sit on my porch, talk to my humming birds, read my Bible and drink coffee. The hope and the peace that lives and dwells in me now, I can’t even describe it. It just is there and it takes over. I wake up in the morning and it’s, “Thank you Jesus for the life that I have, what you’ve given me.” I have had things that I have never had in my life. I have a home. I have a husband who adores me. I have children who love their mother. Most of all, I have love in my heart, which I never had. There’s a box out there, and every sin that I’ve ever committed, I could pull out, pick one out, and His name is written on it, and it says “forgiven.” He took dirt from the road and made a vessel. Every chain that ever held me is gone. The only chain that there is now is really not a chain. It’s a yoke, and I am yoked with Jesus Christ. My man is right here. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT MINISTERS PAT ROBERTSON: Amazing. What have you done? What’s been done to you? Karen had the problem of being abused when she was a kid, and she got angry. There are so many that are carrying scars from childhood. Scars are there. How do you get rid of them? Well, you can try some kind of therapy, but it usually doesn’t work. But God says, “Come unto Me and though your sins be scarlet, I’ll make them white like snow. Whatever has happened to you or been done to you, whatever scars are there, I’ll make you brand new. I’ll make you clean.” Would you like that? Do you want to be free? You don’t have to bear these things all your life. You don’t have to bury them in booze. You don’t have to go out for affairs and try to have sexual activity to dull your pain. You don’t have to do it. God Almighty will reach down and clean you up, cleaner than you can ever believe. And you’ll feel good when it’s all over. You’ll feel so good. You’ll feel so free. And so I offer you today, I offer you freedom. Freedom, so that you can be free. And what I want you to do is to ask God to take you and do it. And if you’ll ask Him, He says, “Come unto Me. Come unto Me.” Now, I’m going to lead you in a simple prayer, nothing complicated. And if you want to be free, you want to be clean, you want to be set free from that which is binding you all the way back to your childhood, the Lord will take all that away. And those scars will be removed forever. Now, I’d like you to pray with me if you want this blessing. I want you to bow your head right now and ask the Lord to take over. Wherever you are, right now, do it. Just bow your head. Whatever you’re doing, it’s not that important. Just turn the TV—just be still before the Lord. Bow your head. Pray these words. “Jesus.” That’s right. “Jesus, I have been sinned against, and I am a sinner. You know how I’ve hurt myself, and you know how I’ve hurt others. Now, Lord, I know that you will cleanse me and take away all the scars. And so I come to you, Lord, and I ask just for that. Set me free. And Lord Jesus, I believe in you, and I ask you to come into my heart. Live your life in me, and I will live for you, and I will serve you all the days of my life. Thank you, Jesus, that you’ve heard my prayer. Thank you that you’ve come in. Thank you that you’ve taken the scars away.” If you prayed with me, I want you to do something. I want you to call in. I have a little booklet that I want to give you. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM It has to do with what just happened to you and how you can make it better. “A New Day,” how you can live with the Lord. “A New Day.” GRAPHIC: OUR GIFT TO YOU 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM Just dial 1-800-759-0700. But today Mike and Lisa are nearly debt free, and here is how they did it. MIKE AND LISA GRANADO MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Mike and Lisa Granado struggled for years just to make ends meet. Lisa Granado: We didn’t have any concept about money and didn’t think about what we should be doing really with our money at that time. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: It didn’t help that Lisa was a self-professed shopaholic. Lisa Granado: I had about nine or ten credit cards, and they were all maxed out. They all had balances on them. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Within two years, the couple was 36,000 dollars in credit card debt. To make matters worse, in 2000, Mike’s company went through a merger, and he had to take a pay cut just to keep his job. Mike Granado: They came in, and they cut overtime. They cut bonuses. So it was a lot of little cuts that added up to a big end of the year cut. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Lisa was forced to go back to work. Lisa Granado: I did go to work, but it really didn’t do that much good, because whatever I was making, I was spending it. I wasn’t paying bills or saving. I still hadn’t learned yet. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Eventually, the Granados had to sell their house. Lisa Granado: It gets very difficult when the time comes every month to pay mortgage, utilities, your credit card debt. And when you’re not able to make those payments, yes, it’s difficult. And you get behind. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Then in 2003, Lisa became a Christian. Lisa Granado: I felt in my spirit that the Lord was telling me that, “You can’t go on this way.” It doesn’t feel right to carry debt. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Lisa and Mike went to her parents for advice. Lisa Granado: My mom and dad were already members of The 700 Club. And they began to teach us about tithing. And I believe in November of 2004 was when I sent my first 20 dollars. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Mike wasn’t a Christian at the time and wasn’t convinced that giving money away was a good idea. Mike Granado: I just didn’t understand. And I might have been skeptical a little bit towards it and thought, “Well, we’ve got to pay bills.” MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: But Mike sat up and noticed when Lisa’s desire to shop disappeared. Lisa Granado: I think once you receive Jesus Christ and you give everything to Him, He’s the one that changes everything for you. And I don’t even have the desire to go shopping. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: Mike, too, became a Christian. And for the first time, the two began tithing together. And their finances started to turn around. Lisa Granado: In December of 2006, my husband received two pay raises. MIA EVANS-SARACUAL: The Granados have continued to give, and each year Mike has received a significant raise. He’s even been promoted. The Granados hope to pay off the remainder of their debt this year. Mike Granado: If we have food on our table and we have enough money to help other people, then that’s my definition of being rich and helping. And through The 700 Club, we’re able to do that. And we’ve been blessed to do that. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: The Bible says, “Give, and it will be given unto you, pressed down, good measure, running over will men heap into your bosom.” It’s true. I learned about finances. I learned about all different kinds of things, the importance of tithing, the importance of stock and investment, the importance of even gold and the dollar. I learned a lot. PAT ROBERTSON: You did? KRISTI WATTS: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: So you’re out ready to make a bunch of money. KRISTI WATTS: I guess so. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, I love juicy questions. All right. KRISTI WATTS: All right. Dorothy writes in and says, “When you pray in your head as opposed to praying out loud, is there a difference in spiritual power? Which one is the most effective?” PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t think it makes any difference. But sometimes when you’re praying out loud, you can get more vocal yourself, and your spirit gets into it more. But there’s not a bit of difference. It’s your spirit praying. And whether it’s vocalized through your mouth or not, I don’t think the Lord—He can understand what you’re thinking. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. I was sitting there talking to the audience a little bit earlier and kind of joking, because you ever go to some of those churches? Some of the churches that I grew up with, when we pray it’s as though we have to scream, “Lord Jesus!” PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, that’s it. KRISTI WATTS: “I said, Lord!” I’m like, “He heard us the first time.” We kind of got to get ourselves riled up. PAT ROBERTSON: Like somehow He’s deaf. He’s not. KRISTI WATTS: I know. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. KRISTI WATTS: He hears them. Okay, Danita writes in and says, “Dear Pat, do you think it’s possible for someone to be possessed with an evil spirit even if they try to go to church and try to give their lives to Christ?” PAT ROBERTSON: You’re asking the wrong question. If they try to go to church, and they try to live, that’s not it. You’ve got to be born again. If you’re born again, you’re not trying to do something. Jesus is living within you. And if He’s living within you, the answer is you will not be possessed by a demon, although it could be you could be harassed by demons, and you could have demonic presence in various places. But you will not be possessed if you’re possessed by Jesus. But if all you’re doing is going to church and trying to live a good life, no way. KRISTI WATTS: That’s the truth. I believe also, too, we can be oppressed. Do you know what I mean? PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, sure. KRISTI WATTS: Not possessed, but oppressed. PAT ROBERTSON: Oppressed. KRISTI WATTS: You have a lot of people in the church, just in general Christians who are dealing with a depression or dealing with anxiety, dealing with things that literally the Lord has given us the power and authority to take hold of. And He says whatever is bound in Heaven will be bound on earth. And so we can bind that stuff and say, “I’m free in the name of Jesus.” Don’t get me preaching up in here. PAT ROBERTSON: Thank you. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, I’m done. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. KRISTI WATTS: Chad says, “Pat, I’m easily angered and frustrated. When I lose it, I really lose it. I also use a lot of extremely bad language when I’m angry. Can God forgive me for the things I do when I’m overcome with rage?” PAT ROBERTSON: Listen, God can forgive you for anything. But the truth is, it sounds to me like you have never been born again. You still have the Adamic nature. The old man is ruling your life. And Paul talks about the flesh warring against the spirit. Well, your flesh has got control. And I don’t know if the Spirit of God has control of your life, because if He does, you’ll have a quiet, meek spirit. You won’t be raging all the time, and cursing and doing the stuff you say you’re doing. So you need to ask the Lord to come into your life and take over. And then day by day by day walk with Him. But the key virtue is humility. You’ve got to humble yourself before the Lord. And as long as you are trying to assert yourself and make yourself justified, well, you’re going to be fighting that battle all the time. And you will not be pleased, and the Lord will not be pleased. You need to be born again. KRISTI WATTS: Can I jump on that? I was thinking about this. It’s interesting. I remember I was going through a season in my life where it’s like my mind, and I was reacting to things. Even though I was born again, I was reacting to things that I shouldn’t be. And I started to read that scripture when the Lord says that He has made us new, to put on the new man. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s right. KRISTI WATTS: And I literally saw an image. It was so cool. When you put on anything, like say you get dressed in the morning. You put on your shoes. You put on your pants. You have to first take something off. And I think as Christians, we need to first take off those things that hold us captive and that bind us and put on what the Lord has given us. And so if you are walking in anger or rage or whatever, and you are born again, you can say, “Lord, this is an area that I am challenged with, Lord. I give it to you. I’m taking this off, putting it at the cross. And, Lord, will you give me your peace in the process?” Which He already has, but it’s just a matter of taking the old off and receiving. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that’s what Paul says. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Put off the old man, and put on the new man. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. Exactly. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, here we go. Where am I? Juanita. Juanita says, “I’ve heard that we do not bind evil spirits by saying, ‘I bind you in the name of Jesus,’ but that we bind them by blessing and by loving a relationship and a Gospel invitation.” KRISTI WATTS: I don’t even know what that means. “Will you please comment on this? I am now completely confused.” KRISTI WATTS: Well, girl, so am I. “What is the truth?” PAT ROBERTSON: All right. Well, Juanita, you are in error, or whoever is telling you this is in error. You bind spirits by the word of your mouth, and you do it by saying, “Satan, I bind you and the forces of evil, and I command you.” You have to speak forth the word, and the word is what controls satanic authority. But you sure don’t do it by singing songs to it, “kumbaya.” And you sure don’t do it by saying, “Oh, I bless you.” Blessing Satan isn’t going to make him stop one thing. So whoever told you that is telling you wrong. There are times you have to have force. And the force is the word out of your mouth. And you say, “Satan, I bind you and the forces of evil.” And he’ll stop. KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. And you know what? I was thinking about this question and how confusing it was. So many people, it’s like we listen to what other people have to say or we listen to what we hear on television. Pick up the Word of God, the Bible. The Bible is the truth. And whatever is in the Bible, that’s what you do, and that’s what you live by. Do we have time for one more? I think we do. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s all the time? KRISTI WATTS: That’s all the time? Something about a horse, real quick: “I’m a horse trainer, so my life is very active seven days a week. Because I’m so active, I really feel . . . .” KRISTI WATTS: Well, I don’t even think we have time for it. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, he said he isn’t able to fast. KRISTI WATTS: Yes, he isn’t able to fast. PAT ROBERTSON: Try juices. Try fruit juices. KRISTI WATTS: There you go. There is the question. God bless you. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, we leave you with these words from Psalm 124, . . . .
