UnderWing Transcripts PO Box 16282 Clearwater, Florida 33766 540 455-2333 / UnderWing@underwingtranscripts.com ________________________________________ The 700 Club Telethon Broadcast Friday, October 2, 2009 GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. This Sunday millions of Christians and thousands of churches around the world will join in a prayer meeting. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s called The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem. Here is Chris Mitchell with that story. PRAYER CHRIS MITCHELL: Robert Stearns co-founded this prayer meeting eight years ago. Robert Stearns (Co-Founder, Day of Prayer): There's a city that is special and unique in God's heart and in His purposes. And that city is the city of Jerusalem. Psalm 122:6 compels us as believers to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. So first of all, believers have a Biblical mandate to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. CHRIS MITCHELL: Stearns says it's always important to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, but especially in the times in which we live. He says the threats and challenges to Jerusalem, Israel, and the Jewish people worldwide have grown considerably. Robert Stearns: Ahmadinejad in Iran is publicly calling for the destruction of the state of Israel. We have people absolutely inciting hatred, and violence, and spewing forth a lot of very dangerous language in this hour. And prayer is the first step towards activism and awareness and getting involved. CHRIS MITCHELL: The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem reaches around the world with an increased participation this year from Asia. But Stearns says it is a call for every believer. Robert Stearns: I encourage every person who is concerned about the future of our world to begin to understand the importance of Jerusalem and praying for Jerusalem's peace. CHRIS MITCHELL: Chris Mitchell, CBN News, Jerusalem. GORDON ROBERTSON: I encourage you to join in with all of those who are going to be in prayer for Jerusalem. Yesterday at CBN we set aside our chapel time to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and reminded ourselves that we are to love even the stones in her walls. The dust of her streets we’re to cherish. This nation is the apple of God’s eye, and we have to realize that and join in prayer. So if you’d like more information on the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem, all you have to do is log on to CBN.com and we’ll get it to you. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. PACIFIC DISASTERS LEE WEBB: Gordon, the disasters in the Pacific aren’t over yet. Tens of thousands are fleeing from another major typhoon heading toward the Philippines. The military is still searching for victims from the tsunami in the Samoan Islands, and more than a thousand are dead after the earthquakes in Indonesia. Here is reporter Erick Stakelbeck. ERICK STAKELBECK: Indonesia’s government warns that the death toll will climb much higher. Thousands of people are still missing. The searches will continue for weeks. Over 500 buildings took heavy damage. Some were completely leveled. Elizabeth Marsali (Quake Survivor): All the buildings on this side collapsed. Then the other side collapsed. Then the fires began. ERICK STAKELBECK: There was one bit of good news amid the carnage, as a teenage girl was found alive after spending 40 hours beneath a pile of rubble. But the situation otherwise is grim. President Obama is pledging his support. President Barack Obama: My administration has been in touch with the government of Indonesia to make it clear that the United States stands ready to help in this time of need. ERICK STAKELBECK: Six thousand miles away in Samoa, the death toll now stands at over 165 and climbing following an earthquake and tsunami earlier this week. Much needed aid is on the way from the US, Australia and New Zealand. Leleone Teo (Tsunami Survivor): One bag of rice and we share about 15 families, or 18 families. ERICK STAKELBECK: And in the Philippines, thousands of villagers were fleeing before a powerful typhoon arrives, just days after another powerful storm led to the worst flooding in 40 years and killed more than 420. Erick Stakelbeck, CBN News. AID FOR THE PHILIPPINES LEE WEBB: As you heard Erick mention there, Typhoon Parma is expected make landfall this weekend in the Philippines. Operation Blessing has already been working around the clock to respond to last week's disaster and prepare for another. Ronald Dinio is going home. The 24-year-old hasn't seen his family in days, and he's worried that they're running out of food at their flood-drenched home, so Ronald is on a personal relief mission. He will have to navigate a highway of water to get back to his house. The Manila suburb where he lives has been submerged ever since Typhoon Ketsana plowed through here nearly a week ago. Signs of the typhoon's destructive power are everywhere. Daily life has resumed, but it's nowhere near normal. People get around the city in anything that floats. Ronald will have to take three different boats to reach his home, and he's not sure what he'll find when he gets there. Ronald Dinio (Operation Blessing): I’ve been calling my family. Sometimes there is no signal, but I keep calling them just to ease my worries. LEE WEBB: Ronald was at home when the typhoon hit, but as soon as he could, he made his way into Manila. That's where the Operation Blessing warehouse is, and that's where Ronald wanted to be, helping others. Ronald Dinio: I volunteered at Operation Blessing, because I could see that there are many people who are more needy than me. LEE WEBB: While Ronald was in the warehouse, his mother and two brothers were wading through the water that filled their home, salvaging what they could. Merlita Dinio wasn't angry that her oldest son had left them to go work at Operation Blessing. She was proud. Merlita Dinio (Ronald’s Mother): I’m so happy that Ronald is helping others, because some people are more needy than us. LEE WEBB: Merlita and her sons have been praying for the typhoon's victims and for Ronald's safe return. Finally, after three boat rides, Ronald reaches his neighborhood, buys some supplies and wades home. Ronald Dinio: Today the flood has subsided. My worries for my family have been removed. LEE WEBB: Ronald takes time to help clean the house, trying to bring some kind of order to his water-soaked home. Then Ronald must head back to Manila, back to the Operation Blessing warehouse. There's still a lot of work to do, and there's another typhoon on the way. The city is prepared for the worst, even as it recovers from the worst flooding in four decades. Man: We need electricity, food, cars and everything. Man: There are no rich or poor in a flood. Everyone is equal. If we can help each other, that will please God. LEE WEBB: Amen. And Gordon, you can see why they’re comparing the damage from that typhoon to the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina. GORDON ROBERTSON: It is a Hurricane Katrina type event, and there is another super typhoon bearing down on the Philippines right as I speak. It’s already a category five super typhoon, and please be in prayer that that turns north and heads harmlessly out to sea and doesn’t strike again, because you saw the floodwaters. Any more rain that comes, even if it hits the northern part of the island of Luzon, the rain will extend down to Manila. Any more rain that comes is just going to increase the flooding and increase the damage. In terms of CBN, CBN Asia, nine of our staff members have completely lost their homes. Another 12 have floodwater up to the second story of their homes. Another 25 have lost everything, all their appliances, all their furniture, all their clothes, all covered in mud and water and completely unusable. But in the face of all of that, they are amassing enormous relief. Over 60,000 people have received food and water because of their efforts. And in the middle of their own need, they’re reaching out with hands of love and compassion. What I’d like you to do, if you want to be a part of what Operation Blessing is doing, what CBN is doing, what CBN Asia is doing, not just in the Philippines, but also with this earthquake in Indonesia, all you have to do is call us: 1-800-759-0700. And say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club.” A portion of every gift to The 700 Club goes into the work of Operation Blessing. Another portion goes into the work of CBN WorldReach to preach the Gospel around the world. And in Jakarta we have a WorldReach center. In Manila, we have a WorldReach center. And we’re on the ground right now providing relief to people in need. If you want to be a part of it, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. And to encourage you, if I can get a drum roll, we’ve got some great news. Some partners from Texas say, “We want to challenge others to give in times of disaster. It looks horrible. We want to strike back. When disaster strikes, we want to strike back.” So they’re challenging you 100,000 dollars. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Go, Texas. GORDON ROBERTSON: What that means is they will match your gift dollar for dollar up to 100,000 dollars. So if you pledge 20 dollars a month, that’s 240 dollars a year, they’ll say, “Okay, we’ll add another 240 dollars to that.” So that’s what that challenge means. Let’s pray. “Lord God, for the partners in Texas who made it possible, we know your word over them is true and you will pour out blessing, so much they cannot contain. And for those watching, making decisions right now, wondering, ‘Can I help? Can I be a part of this?’ I just ask that you would speak to them, and encourage them, and bless them, and give them peace. Do it now, for we ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.” We’ve got 30 minutes on this challenge, so that means for the next 30 minutes, every dollar you pledge will be automatically matched and doubled, so go to the phone and call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. If you want to be a part of the relief effort in Indonesia, in the Philippines, around the world—we’re also helping flood victims down in Atlanta, Georgia, flood victims right here in Norfolk, Virginia—if you want to be a part of everything we’re doing, give us a call: 1-800-759-0700. Well, when it came to money, Frank and Dawn Matthews only had one rule: if you want it, buy it. It’s a rule they lived by, until the economy fell and their business hit rock bottom. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FRANK AND DAWN MATTHEWS DORY NISSEN: Frank and Dawn Matthews own a successful sod and seeding company. They specialize in commercial jobs. They bid on contracts and often get them. But the Matthews admit, when they first started seeing green, they were foolish about spending the money. Frank Matthews: Things that we wanted to do, we just went out and we’d do it. Dawn Matthews: We were buying cars. We were taking trips. Frank Matthews: Eating out a lot. Dawn Matthews: Just spending money like it was endless. DORY NISSEN: But when the economy took a downturn, job contracts were scarce. Dawn Matthew: We were beginning to get behind, some bills two months behind, some bills three months behind. The bills were coming in and stacking up, and the money wasn’t. I was paralyzed with fear. DORY NISSEN: The Matthews used credit cards to get by. Soon they had 35,000 dollars on plastic in addition to business bills they couldn’t pay. Frank Matthews: Life started becoming very difficult. I was not sleeping. I was in fear. I was stressed. And I was really struggling with just getting out of bed every day, facing the job, facing work. I’m facing my family. I just felt like a failure. DORY NISSEN: Frank prayed and asked God what was wrong. He says he felt God was telling him his priorities were out of line. Frank Matthews: I just knew that the Lord wanted me to repent. I just said, “God, I want to live for you.” And I felt His Spirit, and God restored my life that day. DORY NISSEN: Frank prayed for guidance. At the same time, Dawn started watching The 700 Club. Dawn Matthews: We always respected Pat and his wisdom. And he would teach about tithing. And I knew that was something that we should be doing and that we were out of God’s will. DORY NISSEN: They not only began tithing to CBN, they also cut up their credit cards. Dawn Matthews: When we cut those cards, it was a celebration. It just felt so good, a feeling that I had not felt in a long time. DORY NISSEN: And the Matthews started to see a change. Frank Matthews: Work starting picking up. Checks were coming in that we didn’t expect to come in. The phone was ringing. People were calling me on jobs that we had quoted in the past, and saying, “Hey, I’ve got this job for you. Come out and start immediately.” Our life was starting to get exciting again. DORY NISSEN: Dawn and Frank continued to tithe and decided to give over and above their tithe. Six months after they increased their giving to CBN, the Matthews landed their largest seeding contract every, nearly 1.5 million dollars. Dawn Matthews: We were so excited. We jumped up and down, “Praise God! We got a chance at life again!” And we were being obedient, and God was blessing that. And we just wanted to do more and more and more. DORY NISSEN: The spring of 2009 has been one of the best seasons for the Matthews, and they hope to have their credit cards paid off by the end of the year. Frank Matthews: If you’re struggling with life and your finances, you just don’t see a way out, I would just encourage you to become obedient to the Lord and start tithing. When we’re obedient, He is going to bless us for that. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: Do that. If God is speaking to you to give, do it now. Just do what Frank did. He said, “Lord, I need to be right with you. I need to live my life in accordance with your rules, not mine anymore. I tried it on my own.” But we’ve got to understand that we are uniquely made to be in relationship with Him. And what Frank did is say, “I want to start living for you now. I want to have you first in my life.” And part of that is tithing, to say, “Okay, here is ten percent. Here is ten percent. You bring everything to me, I’ll give back to you ten percent.” And here is the promise of God that comes: Malachi 3:10, “’Bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be food in My house. And prove Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts . . . . ” It’s the only time we get to test God. It’s in our giving. “. . . . ‘if I will not open for you the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.’” That promise, the same thing that happened to Frank and Dawn, can happen to you. Dawn said, “We have a life now. We’re back. We have a life now, because of what God has done for us.” And it took them taking the initiative to say, “We will give.” So if you want to start an adventure in giving, give us a call: 1-800-759-0700. Just say, “I want to join The 700 Club.” How much is that? It’s 20 dollars a month. That’s just 65 cents a day. You can also join via CBN.com. When you give on the Internet, you automatically sign up for Pledge Express, electronic monthly giving. There are no stamps, no checks, no hassle. We save so much on the processing we’re able to give as our gift back to you “Power for Life” monthly teaching CDs. So if you want it, sign up for Pledge Express. You can do it by phone: 1-800-759-0700. Or you can log on to CBN.com. Either way, whatever God is telling you to do, do it right now. Pick up the phone and call us. Well, Russell and Margie McDaniel thought they were ready to retire. Then the recession hit. Russell got sick, and they found themselves more than 50,000 dollars in debt. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * RUSSELL AND MARGIE MCDANIEL Russell McDaniel: We had a lot of bills. We had credit card debt. We had personal loans. KEN HULME: A few years back, Russell and Margie McDaniel were looking forward to retirement, but not in the way that it was thrust upon them. Russell McDaniel: I was sick at the time, and the bills just kept coming in. We would pay them. We would have money to pay them, but all I can just say, it was nerve wracking. I think a lot of people experience that. KEN HULME: And that led to anxiety and sleepless nights. Margie McDaniel: There were nights I would wake up, and he said, “Well, we’re not going to be able to make it.” KEN HULME: After Russell retired, the couple still had to pay off two new cars, 50,000 in credit card debt and more in personal lines of credit. Without Russell’s income, they were spending 1,800 dollars a month more than they were bringing in. Russell McDaniel: You worried about losing the house. You worried about losing your car. You just worried about losing everything. Margie McDaniel: We decided no matter what, come what may, that we were not going to stop tithing. We were going to continue to tithe and give, no matter what, even if we went bankrupt. KEN HULME: One place the McDaniels gave was to The 700 Club. Margie McDaniel: I feel that we’re doing what God has called us to do when we give to CBN, when we help the less fortunate, with the people being saved. All of that blesses us, blesses our heart, to see people come into the Kingdom of God. KEN HULME: At the time Russell retired, Margie was working part time for a small cosmetics company. That year, the company hired her full time and gave her a bonus equal to an entire year’s salary. The next year, she got another big promotion. Margie McDaniel: I was promoted to plant manager, and I received an increase twice the salary I had before. So that was God honoring our giving, honoring our faithfulness. And we knew it was Him. KEN HULME: Russell and Margie continued to increase their tithes to their church and to CBN and committed to obey all that God was telling them to do. That’s when Margie’s company was bought out, and she was given early retirement. To reward her service, the company gave Margie a huge exit bonus, enough to pay off their cars, credit cards, even the balance on their house. Russell McDaniel: God honors His Word. But you have to learn to trust Him. You have to learn to be obedient. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: God honors His Word, but you have to learn to trust Him. You have to learn obedience. Let me tell you a story from the Bible. We live in uncertain times today, don’t we? Everybody says the economy has to recover. Is it not in recovery? Is unemployment rising? Where are we? Is the dollar losing its value? Has our government borrowed too much? And there are all kinds of threats. There are natural disasters. Iran looks like it’s getting a nuclear weapon. We live in perilous times, but is this new? Were there perilous times in the Bible? Well, here is a story from II Kings 6, “There was a great famine in Samaria.” At this point in time, the kingdom had divided between Samaria and Judea. “And indeed, they besieged it.” This was the army of Syria. It had come against the capital of Israel, Samaria. “They had besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for 80 shekels of silver. And one-fourth of a cab,” that’s about a pint, “one-fourth of a pint of dove droppings for five shekels of silver.” That’s how bad this famine was. Can you imagine coming home with that? “Honey, look at the great deal I got on this donkey’s head,” and trying to make a meal out of that. That is how bad it was. That’s how bad this famine was. There was an army coming against Samaria. All of this was going on. And in the middle of this, you have a prophet of God who comes. Now, the king of Samaria was against him. He didn’t like the prophet. The prophet is Elisha, a pretty famous prophet. Here is a prophet who sees the chariots of fire. He is able to lead raiders from Syria back away from the land. He has incredible ability given to him by God. But the king of Samaria didn’t like him, because Elisha was saying things, that, “You’re doing things that are wrong.” But here comes Elisha, and he has a prophetic word for the time. And he says, “Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord, ‘About this time tomorrow, about this time a seah of flour,’” that’s about eight gallons, eight gallons of fine flour, “’shall be sold for a shekel.’” This is the same day that you get a donkey’s head going for that high price. Here eight gallons of flour is going for a shekel. Two, that’s going to be 16 gallons, of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria. That’s where it’s going to happen. And he prophesied that. Now, he prophesizes in front of the king. There is an officer on whose hand the king leaned, and he answered, and he said, “Look, if the Lord would make windows in Heaven,” he’s actually quoting what Malachi later prophesizes, “if the Lord would make windows in Heaven, could this thing be?” And Elisha responded, “In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it.” So often in perilous times, we start doubting the word of the Lord. That’s exactly what that man did. He doubted. He said, “Look if the Lord could make windows in Heaven, could this be? We’re in the middle of a famine. Don’t you see it? People are eating dove droppings for food. That’s how we’re surviving today. And you say tomorrow we’re going to have fine flour? We’re going to have barley?” Well, what happened? Well, overnight, God made it sound like a great army was coming against the army of Syria, and they fled in the middle of the night. And in their fleeing, they left all their supplies. They left everything. They left gold, silver, food, tents, horses. They left it all. And a group of lepers went out and said, “Wow, we’ve got to tell this good news.” And they brought it back. They brought the good news back. And when the people in the city heard it, there was such a stampede to get the food that the very man that said, “This can’t happen. Even if God could open the windows of Heaven, this can’t happen,” he was trampled at the gate, because that’s how excited the people were to find food, that the word of the Lord had been true. Now, which one are you? Are you the one that’s going to say, “I believe God. When He says He can open windows in Heaven and pour out a blessing, I believe Him.” Or are you going to be the man that says, “Well, I see that. I hear what you’re saying, but how can this be? Do you not understand the economic times we’re in?” Listen to the word of God. No matter what the economic condition is, God knows how to bless His people. But what He’s looking for is the same thing that Russell and Margie found. He’s looking for us to be obedient. He’s looking for us to say, “Okay, I believe the word of the Lord, and I’m going to act that way.” So even if it seems rough, even if it seems we’re 50,000 dollars in debt, we are going to stay consistent with our tithe and test God, because we know we can trust Him. We can trust Him. We can trust Him with our money. And when we do, He comes through. So if you want to take an adventure in giving, if you want to say, “I want to trust God. I want to trust God in these economic times and see can He pour out a blessing? Can He bring raises? Can He bring new job opportunities? Can He do things for me? Can He get me promotions? Can He give me new business ideas?” He can do all of that for you, because He loves you. But He is waiting for you. He’s saying, “Will you trust Me with your finances?” If you want to start giving, do it right now: 1-800-759-0700. What we’re asking you to do is join The 700 Club. How much is that? Twenty dollars a month, just 65 cents a day. Some of you say, “I can give even more. I can give 700 Club Gold, 40 dollars a month.” There’s also 1000 Club, which is 1,000 dollars a year, and that equals 84 dollars a month. There’s 2500 Club, 2,500 a year. Founders is 5,000 dollars a year. And if you want to make a significant gift, Chairman’s Circle, 10,000 or more a year. At whatever level God is speaking to you, now is the time to call: 1-800-759-0700. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, one of the things I love about what God does, when we’re obedient and step up with our giving, is that He in turn turns around then and uses what we give to touch and change the lives of others. I want to show you how CBN partners are helping people around the world. In Zambia, I met a boy named Christopher who was forced to work as a servant in his uncle’s home. Christopher had just one wish: he wanted to go to school. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CHRISTOPHER FINDS A SPONSOR TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s a cold morning here in Mansia, Zambia, but these children don’t mind. They have come to school today running, skipping and riding their bikes with enthusiasm, because in this place they will receive love, food and an opportunity to learn. But their stories outside this compound are very different. Christopher’s mother abandoned him when he was a baby. After his father died of AIDS, Christopher went to live with an uncle. Christopher: Then I started staying there and looking after the donkeys. TERRY MEEUWSEN: His uncle has children of his own, so Christopher is the family servant. Christopher: I give food to the pigs, and after that just working the garden. We have also a garden. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is the local government school. They have few supplies and don’t even have real desks. But Christopher always wanted to go there to get an education. Christopher: There they refused. I was too big. That’s why they brought me here. TERRY MEEUWSEN: When he was 12 years old, Christopher started first grade at this Christian school, built and supported by Orphan’s Promise. Christopher: They asked me, “Do you want to go to school?” And I was very excited. And I said, “Yes, I want to go to school.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: The school has plenty of supplies, as well as computers and new boarding rooms for orphans. Seeing the dorm rooms has given Christopher a dream. Christopher: To come here. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Boarding one student costs about 500 dollars per year, and Christopher hasn’t yet found a sponsor. So every day after school, while the other kids play outside, Christopher continues to work for his uncle. Christopher: But something there they can treat me somehow that I don’t like. When I’m in the house, they can say, “Come out. This is not your house,” in the morning. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But at the school, Christopher feels like he has a family. Christopher: Because they’re kind to me. They take care of me like they’re my mum and dad. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Christopher is an intelligent and kind boy, with a strong, yet gentle spirit. We know he would excel if he were living at the school, so we’re giving him a special surprise. (To Christopher): What did you tell me yesterday was the thing you wanted more than anything? Christopher: To be in boarding. TERRY MEEUWSEN: To be in boarding. Well, you know what, Orphan’s Promise is going to sponsor you. So as of today, this is your new home. You get to come and stay here, okay? Christopher: Okay. Thank you. TERRY MEEUWSEN: You are so welcome. I want you to know that God heard your prayer. And last night I woke up, and I was thinking about you. And you know what I thought? Do you know who David was in the Bible? Christopher: Mm-hm. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, he was a great man of God. And you know what he was first? A shepherd boy. And that’s what you’ve been, a shepherd boy. And you’ve been faithful to that. And God wants to do something powerful for you. (Reporting): So instead of herding donkeys as his uncle’s servant, Christopher is surrounded by people who love and appreciate him. He’s getting an education and playing with his friends after school. Because of people like you, Christopher has hope for the future. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Poverty is a terrible thing. There are dreams inside of children, inside of their parents, their families, that will not be realized, not because of any problem that they’ve created. They just don’t have opportunity. When you join The 700 Club, you give us a chance to come alongside of special children like Christopher and say, “God has a plan and a purpose for your life. There is hope and a future in store for you.” And it makes all the difference. You may not feel like your gift can make much of a difference alone, but together we can change the world. God takes a little and multiplies it. So go to your phone now. We’re in the middle of a 100,000 dollar challenge. If you’ll go to your phone and call right now, that means whatever you pledge will be matched and doubled dollar for dollar up to 100,000 dollars. So please call: 1-800-759-0700. And by the way, when you call, if you say, “I’d like to give my gift through Pledge Express,” it means your bank does all of the work. It’s electronic monthly giving. You don’t have to hassle with it. It happens automatically. You can stop at any time you want. But it saves us a lot of administrative costs, and it means more of your gift can go directly into changing the lives of children like Christopher. So please call now. You can also log on to CBN.com and give that way. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: Now we’re going to take you to China where your gifts helped save the life of a young girl. When Min started having chest pains, she didn’t tell her parents. She knew they couldn’t afford to take her to the doctor. What she didn’t know was how close she came to dying. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * YUAN MIN’S HEART TIM BRANSON: Every year, Mrs. Yuan took her daughter Min on a traditional Tibetan Buddhist trek. First, they’d go to the Lama Temple to pray to idols. Then they’d climb to the top of a mountain and plant prayer flags. Mrs. Yuan: We’d write our prayers on the flags and believe that when the wind blows, it carries our prayers to the gods. Some people pray for prosperity and good luck, but I always prayed for peace and health for my family, especially for my youngest daughter, Min. TIM BRANSON: In her early teens, Min started having severe heart trouble. Min: I woke up with a sharp pain like an arrow piercing my heart. I didn’t know what was wrong. I couldn’t stand up, I couldn’t breathe, and I couldn’t bear the pain. TIM BRANSON: Min didn’t tell her parents, because she knew they would worry, and she knew they didn’t have enough money for her to go to the doctor. They’re farmers and make less than 60 dollars a month. So Min endured the pain until CBN came to her village with a free medical clinic. That’s when her parents learned that Min had a life-threatening heart condition. Mrs. Yuan: If she didn’t get surgery, she wouldn’t live long. TIM BRANSON: So CBN arranged for Min to have free heart surgery, and doctors repaired the hole in her heart. Min: When I woke up from surgery, I did not feel any pain in my heart. The first thing I saw was someone from CBN standing beside my bed smiling at me. I knew that I was not alone. I was so grateful that at the most difficult moment of my life, CBN came to help me. TIM BRANSON: CBN brought relief to Min’s body and spirit. Min: I asked the girl from CBN where her love came from and why she treated me so kindly. And she said it was because Jesus loved me. I had never heard about Jesus before. But when she said that, I felt warm. There was a peace in my heart, and I even saw a beam of light. Then I started reading the Bible. I realized what a perfect God Jesus is. TIM BRANSON: It caused Min’s mother to think about what she had believed all these years, too. Mrs. Yuan: When I met CBN, I started to wonder why their God worked and my gods didn’t. Maybe mine wasn’t the real one. So I turned to God, to Jesus. Now my whole family has received Jesus as Savior. Min: Jesus has given me hope, health and happiness. There is no god that can compare to Him. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: There is no god that can compare to Him. See what happens when we all join together? A group of donors here, we provide administrative help. We established the office in China, then in there a group of Chinese Christians who want to go out and help others. And they’re doctors. And they want to be of service. They want to be used. And we can all work together for good, to bring good to people, to bring hope to people, to bring the good news to people. If you want to be a part of that, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. We’re a lot more than just a TV show. We want to reach out with hands of compassion around the world. And if you want to be a part of it, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Or you can log on to CBN.com. What we’re asking you to do is join The 700 Club. How much is that? It’s just 20 dollars a month, 65 cents a day. And you join with so many people around the world that want to make a difference. So if that’s you, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Let’s go over to Kristi at the phones. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Hey, Gordon. And I’ve got to tell you. We’ve got something so exciting for you that when you call in we want to give this to you. It’s called Right on the Money. Let me tell you what it’s about. We all know that if you turn on the television or read a newspaper, life is kind of chaotic right now, especially when it comes to finances. But listen, God is a God with a plan, a purpose and a strategy. And if you read the Bible, there are so many strategies on finances. Well, literally Pat did that very thing for you. He read the Bible, took some of those strategies, placed those keys and strategies in a CD, and it’s our gift to you when you call. In fact, this is what Pat has to say about it. Take a listen. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ENDORSEMENT PAT ROBERTSON: The world’s financial landscape is rapidly changing. Each of us needs to understand the new economy and how we can survive and thrive amid such sweeping change. That’s why I’ve compiled a special CBN partner audio edition of my latest book, Right on the Money. ANNOUNCER: In this special CBN partner audio edition by Pat Robertson, you’ll discover the biblically based principles that can help you get out of debt, create a road map to wealth, protect your investments and much more. Get Right on the Money, our gift to you when you join The 700 Club. PAT ROBERTSON: Above all, I want you to remember that God is greater than any economic downturn. He knows who you are and every circumstance in your life. He has provided opportunities all around you. Get the wisdom you need today and build a secure financial future. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KRISTI WATTS: I love that. And we want to equip you. That’s why when you call in right now this is our gift to you, right here, Right on the Money. Don’t forget, we’re in the middle of a challenge. We only have three minutes left on this 100,000 dollar challenge. We need you to call. There is the number right there. You can always log on to CBN.com. And I want to say a really quick thank you to those folks that are scrolling by. Rita, I think she’s from Florida, 20 dollars a month. Thank you so much, Rita. And so we need you. Call in right now. Partner with us, and I promise you, you will not just change a nation, you will change the world. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: If we can stop that clock, I’ve got some great news. Some partners from Virginia say 100,000 dollars is not enough. They want to double it. They want to take it all the way to 200,000 and take us to the end of the hour. Let’s pray. “Lord, for the partners from Virginia that made it possible to increase and double this challenge, we just know that your word for them is true, and you will open windows in Heaven and pour out blessings they cannot contain. And for those watching right now, making decisions, we just ask that you would speak to them. Encourage them, for we ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amen. GORDON ROBERTSON: And amen. Well, you heard it, 200,000 dollars with 20 minutes to go. If we can check in on that red number, we’ve got 103,000 left to make it. We need to hear from you. What a challenge means is existing CBN partners like giving so much, they like the adventure of giving so much, they like receiving so much, they want to challenge others to give. And so they’re challenging you and saying, “We’ll double your gift for the next 19 minutes and 42 seconds. We’ll double it up to 200,000 dollars.” So now is the time to call us: 1-800-759-0700. Or you can log on to CBN.com. Well, a few years ago, Glen Cox had more than 300,000 dollars in debt. He says it happened one bad decision at a time, but it only took one good decision for Glen to get out of debt and into his dream job. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GLEN AND MICHELLE COX Glen Cox: The saying is you work to live, not live to work, and I was living to work. ANDREW KNOX: Glen Cox’s life revolved around his career as a restaurant manager. But years of obsessing over work led to the day his wife, Michelle, packed up their kids and moved out. Glen’s career was all he had left. Glen Cox: I think when Michelle left, that’s when I had to really search for a deeper faith to really grow up. I had to ask God for the first time, to say, “Lord, I’ve been wrong. Help me see the right way.” ANDREW KNOX: Glen started going back to church. Glen Cox: I just took small steps. I tried to be a dad, got a job that didn’t own me. I started becoming a giver, attending church regularly, and then just prayed and had faith. ANDREW KNOX: Glen also had to deal with a lot of debt. Glen Cox: The total debt was somewhere in the 330,000 dollar range, and it happened one bad decision at a time. ANDREW KNOX: While he slowly worked his way out of debt, Glen decided to become a 700 Club partner. Glen Cox: I just started doing the 20 dollars a month. To me, it seemed like, “Man, shouldn’t you do more?” But I said, “I’ve got to do this and do it consistently, no matter what’s going on.” ANDREW KNOX: Glen got out of the restaurant business completely and moved to be closer to Michelle and the kids. Glen Cox: I knew my motives were about getting my family right, so I had to get out of the job that had trapped me, but I had to give up that big salary to do that. It was not about the money; it was about that that job owned me. So I took a job making eight dollars an hour working for a guy that seal-coated driveways. ANDREW KNOX: The next year, Glen started a business of his own. And as it grew, he continued to be faithful in giving to CBN. Glen Cox: I got into giving 40 dollars a month, then 80 dollars a month. Every year it just doubled, and every year God blessed me more. I mean, the law of reciprocity occurred. I didn’t make it my motive to get something back. It just was a byproduct. From that point to now, it’s amazing. I started with nothing. The first year we had 350 customers. Today we have over 20,000 customers. I can’t say there’s anything magical about the way I seal-coat a driveway. I think it’s God. ANDREW KNOX: The changes in Glen’s life also influenced Michelle. The couple reconciled, and Michelle became a Christian. Michelle Cox: I could see that in everything that Glen did, he was genuine. It was really, truly from his heart. He was a different person. It was his faith that really was the catalyst that pushed me in the right direction. And the way we interact and the way we treat each other now is so different. It’s based on respect, love, God in our decisions in what we do and how we go forward. ANDREW KNOX: Today, Glen and Michelle are members of CBN’s Chairman’s Circle. Glen Cox: I get excited that now that we’re able to give as much as we give to CBN, and now how much I can give to my church, and I don’t do it with any hope of getting something back, and it just keeps coming. It’s just goofy. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: That can happen to you. What happened to Glen can happen to you. But imagine his journey from owning a restaurant to seal-coating driveways for eight dollars an hour. But God was faithful to him, because Glen learned the secret. All you have to do is obey God. When you do, then He watches over you. He protects you. And Glen was able to see an incredible miracle: his family restored, his family put back together. That is an amazing story. Three hundred thousand dollars of debt evaporated, a family back together. All these things, all these blessings are available if we will only obey God. So if you want to start, if you want to say, “Okay, I’ll start,” call us: 1-800-759-0700. What we’re asking you to do is join The 700 Club. How much is that? Twenty dollars a month, 65 cents a day. Some of you say, “I can give at a higher level. I can give at 700 Club Gold.” That’s 40 dollars a month. There is 1000 Club. That’s 84 dollars or more a month, and it translates into 1,000 dollars at the end of a year. The 2500 Club, 2,500 a year. Founders is 5,000. And then we have Chairman’s Circle, 10,000 or more a year. At whatever level God is speaking to you, now is the time to call: 1-800-759-0700. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, in Peru, the rainy season lasts for a few months every year. For Lesly, that meant leaky roofs and heavy flooding. It also meant that at any moment, she and her family could be swept away. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A NEW HOME FOR LESLY KEN HULME: Lesly lives on the edge of the Amazon River in Peru. She’s a single mom who has to make do with a house whose roof leaks when it rains. Lesly: I didn’t have money to buy leaves for our roof. It was cheaper to buy plastic. So that’s what I put on the roof. KEN HULME: But the plastic always leaks during rainy season, and that made for long miserable nights. Lesly: My children couldn’t sleep because the roof leaks. The water would come in and soak everything. I would sing to my kids, so they could laugh. I laughed on the outside, and on the inside I was suffering. KEN HULME: But things were about to get worse, much worse. When the river floods every year during rainy season, this is what happens to Lesly’s house. In fact, one morning during the floods, Lesly had to go out and rescue her five-year-old daughter. Lesly: I realize that if I hadn’t gone outside at that moment, my daughter would have died. I asked my aunt for a place to stay, even if it was just a room, where we could stay until the flooding passed. KEN HULME: When Operation Blessing arrived on the scene to provided disaster relief, they found Lesly’s home completely underwater. That’s when the team decided it was time to tear down the house and build her a new one. In just one day, they built her a new house on stilts, with a roof that doesn’t leak anymore. Lesly’s new home is now safe from floods year round. Lesly: I am grateful, because I have a home, and my children will not get wet. And I thank you. KEN HULME: A few months later, during dry season, Operation Blessing went back and set up a small stand for Lesly to sell essentials to her neighbors. Now she has a way to provide for her young family without ever leaving home. Lesly: Thank you for the new business and my new home. Thank you, Operation Blessing. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Here at CBN we believe in the power of one person to make a difference. And when we all join together, the ripple effect goes around the world and touches families like Lesly’s. You cannot imagine what this means to her. It’s a hope and a future, a future she didn’t have before, a future that her children will now be blessed by. We want to say thank you for caring. Thank you for going to your phone. Thank you for getting out of your chair and saying, “I want to become a part of making a difference. So will those of you who haven’t called do that now? We’re in the middle of a 200,000 dollar challenge. That means when you join The 700 Club at any level, your giving is matched dollar for dollar. So call: 1-800-759-0700. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: With four children and a salary of just a dollar a day, Sun Vay had trouble supporting his family. Feeding them was hard enough. Sending them to school was out of the question. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * VAY SREY GOES TO SCHOOL KRISTI WATTS: If you need a ride in this Cambodian town, you might hail Sun Vay’s taxi service. It won’t cost a lot, but it may just take you a little while to get where you’re going. Sun Vay: It is very hard work, and I don’t earn much money. KRISTI WATTS: And making money has been a problem for Sun Vay and his family. After he pays the rent on his bicycle taxi, he only earns about a dollar a day. His wife makes less as a hired farm hand. It’s just not enough to provide for the couple’s four young children. Mother: I worry about my children, whether they will ever go to school or if we can give them enough food. KRISTI WATTS: Working with the local church, Operation Blessing provided the family with some help. First, we gave their eight-year-old Vay Srey the school fees, supplies and clothes she needed to start the first grade. Next, we gave the family a grant to start a small grocery business near their home. Now, mom can stay home with the kids. Finally, Operation Blessing gave them a cow. Now each day they have fresh milk to drink and more to sell, and that means there is food on the table for everyone. Mother: Thank you, Operation Blessing, for the business and the cow. We now have hope for the future. Sun Vay: I am so thankful. Thanks for this organization that helped my family. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: And thank you. Seven minutes left on the clock: 1-800-759-0700. Well, despite the slow economy, Steve and Patti Grant are still in good shape financially. They’re debt free, mortgage free. And their two small businesses are turning a profit. Here is how their strategy can work for you. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * STEVE AND PATTI GRANT DORY NISSEN: After years of working hard as schoolteachers and never making quite enough, Steve and Patti Grant of Shawnee, Kansas wondered what they could do to bring in some extra money. So the first thing they did was work on paying off their mortgage. Patti Grant: I was watching The 700 Club, and Pat had a whiteboard. And I remember that he said if you do certain things with your mortgage, you can take a 15 year mortgage to 9 years. It’s amazing. You don’t really have to have very much money for it to happen. You just take that little—we took 75 dollars extra. That’s how we did it. And we put 75 dollars extra directly to our principal. And Pat taught that. DORY NISSEN: By doing that, they paid off their mortgage much sooner than they expected. And during that time, Steve and Patti also increased their giving. Steve Grant: We believe God’s Word teaches us, and that is to be givers, not just givers of ten percent, but to be abundant givers. DORY NISSEN: They began giving to CBN and it’s water well projects. Patti Grant: It literally broke my heart when I saw these people that were drinking dirty water. And it was so within our power to be able to relieve somebody. So I just felt like that was a good ministry. It spoke to my heart. DORY NISSEN: As they increased their giving, the Grants believe God gave them an idea for not one, but two small businesses. The first involved buying and renovating houses. Their strategy was simple. Patti Grant: If you buy the dog in the good neighborhood and you fix it up, then you make money. Steve Grant: There isn’t a whole lot I can do when it comes to major projects, but I do know how to paint, and I know how to scrape. DORY NISSEN: The Grants would then live in the home for a few years until the value increased, and then they would sell. They have done this with eight houses, and every time, they’ve made a profit. Because of their financial success, the couple increased their giving again, and Patti was even able to quit her teaching job to start another small business marketing nutritional supplements. Patti Grant: From January ’08 and January ’09, I had a 32 percent increase in my revenue. DORY NISSEN: Their success only seems to make them more committed to give. Steve Grant: Well, there is a joy in giving. There is a joy that God gives you when you know you’re being obedient and you’re able to meet needs. Patti Grant: By giving them clean water, then they’re receptive to the Gospel and sometimes at those dedication ceremonies, people actually accept the Lord. The ultimate goal is for as many to go to Heaven as we can take with us. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: That is the ultimate goal. Let’s populate Heaven. Let’s preach the Gospel around the world. And if you want to be a part of it, call us. Join The 700 Club: 1-800-759-0700. A portion of every gift goes into preaching the Gospel around the world. You can also log on to CBN.com and give through the Internet. When you do that, you automatically sign up for Pledge Express. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, Fatai spent 12 years of his life completely blind. Doctors and tribal healers couldn’t help him. So Fatai turned to a friend for help, and that’s when this Muslim man saw his first miracle. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FATAI RECIEVES SIGHT DAN REANY: Fatai wakes up happy to see the world around him each day. He takes nothing for granted, because for 12 years he lived in darkness. Fatai: I had a dream in which a large beast was trying to pluck out my eyes. After that, my sight got worse and worse. I used medicine, but nothing worked. One morning, I woke up and I was completely blind. DAN REANY: Fatai had earned a living as a truck driver, but without his sight, he lost everything. Fatai: I sold my truck to pay for medical treatments. When the money ran out, I begged. One time I was crossing the street, and a car hit me. People came to my aid and took me home. DAN REANY: Soon after that, Fatai’s wife and mother both died. He couldn’t raise his baby daughter alone, so a relative took her in. One day a pastor told Fatai about a meeting where CBN programs would be shown. Man: I knew Fatai since he was a child. I know there is nothing God cannot do. So I refused to give up on Fatai. Fatai: I was a Muslim, but after I lost my sight, I tried everything, even traditional healers. I had lost all hope. But when Pastor Samal invited me to the crusade, I decided to go. DAN REANY: At the meeting, Fatai listened to The 700 Club on a television. During the show, the hosts prayed. Fatai: I felt something pricking me on the sides. I was afraid. I thought I would leave with even more problems than I went in with. Then I felt something like a flash of lightning across my eyes, and red crystals seemed to shine through. A sticky fluid came out of my eyes. Then suddenly they popped open, and I could see. I was shocked, and shouted praise to God. That day, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. DAN REANY: After regaining his sight, there was only one place Fatai wanted to go. Fatai: I went to see my daughter, not knowing what to expect. When I set eyes on her, I called out to her, and she ran to me. We embraced and rejoiced together. DAN REANY: Fatai now helps the CBN team during outreaches and tells everyone he can about his healing. So far, at least three people have given their lives to Christ because of his miracle. He is also working and taking care of his daughter. Fatai: God used The 700 Club and CBN for my healing. I am very happy and have danced and rejoiced many times. Thank you. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Can you imagine? He was blind and now he sees. And everybody in his village knew the condition that he had and that God had powerfully touched him. He did it through this program that you broadcast in his part of the world. That’s part of what 700 Club members do. We’re bringing truth and the love of Jesus to people all around the world. Help us do that, won’t you? We just have a little bit of time left. We’ve got a great challenge in front of us, so we need to hear from you right now. GORDON ROBERTSON: And if I can get a drum roll, we’re going to add some money against that challenge. Here from Sherman, Texas a 2500 Club member saying, “I’m doubling this year. I’m going to Founder,” 5,040 dollars. We’re counting down to victory. We’ve got two seconds left. One. It’s amazing. If you still want to get involved, you still can: 1-800-759-0700. We had a 200,000 dollar challenge. And against that you gave 228,000. God is good. We leave you with these words from Psalms, “Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things! And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory.” God bless you. We’ll see you again. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * END SPOT A: PLEDGE EXPRESS Announcer: While Mary feeds her two young daughters, she also helps feed needy families around the world. He says the threats and challenges to Jerusalem, Israel and the Jewish people worldwide have grown considerably. Robert Stearns: Ahmadinejad in Iran is publicly calling for the destruction of the state of Israel. We have people absolutely inciting hatred and violence and spewing forth a lot of very dangerous language in this hour. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, the Bible commands us to love the stones and her walls, to cherish even the dust of her streets. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. If you’d like more information on the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem, all you have to do is log on to CBN.com and we’ll get it to you. The military is still searching for victims from the tsunami in the Samoa Islands, and more than a thousand are dead after the earthquakes in Indonesia. AID FOR THE PHILIPPINES LEE WEBB: Typhoon Parma is expected make landfall this weekend in the Philippines. LEE WEBB: And Gordon, you can see from that incredible video why they’re comparing the damage from that typhoon to that of Hurricane Katrina.
