Surprise, surprise. The Democrats tried a fiscal gimmick, and it didn’t work. They sort of acted like 250 billion wasn’t there. So the plan they had failed. The Senate has failed to approve a measure that would supposedly have cut the cost of a reform bill. Smoke and mirrors. KRISTI WATTS: But, Pat, the opponents said the plan was just a gimmick and didn’t really cut the cost at all. Here is reporter Jennifer Wishon. CARE JENNIFER WISHON: It's called the “doc fix,” legislation to increase Medicare payments to doctors with a price tag of 247 billion dollars over the next decade. It was supposed to be part of the cost of health care. But in order to bring the health care reform bill in under budget, Democrats simply moved that expense out of health care into another part of the budget, without paying for it. Republicans call it a scam. Sen. Jon Kyl ([R] Arizona: They call it a permanent fix. It's not a permanent fix at all. It doesn't fix anything. JENNIFER WISHON: The measure was easily defeated Wednesday. In a statement, Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “It is unfortunate that Republicans have again chosen to put politics before the needs of the American people. The Medicare Physician Fairness Act would help ensure that seniors and military families get the care they need by fairly compensating Medicare and TRICARE doctors. But it wasn't just Republicans. A dozen Democrats also voted no, and that reveals some of the trouble Democrats could have in passing a broader health care reform bill. Ed Haisimaier (Heritage Foundation): They lost 12 Democrats, plus Senator Lieberman, on this vote, which means that they don't have the votes to pass this stuff. JENNIFER WISHON: If the Democratic leadership has trouble passing this measure, they could have trouble finding the 60 votes they need to consider broader health care reform. Democratic leaders are already walking a delicate balance trying to get and keep members on board. That's because some are more concerned about their reelection campaigns than facing the consequences of not walking in lock step with their party. Illinois Senator Roland Burris is just one example. He says he will not support any bill that does not have a public option. And Burris may have little motivation to bend for a President and leadership who criticized his appointment by an embattled governor and made it clear they won't back his reelection bid next year. And in an environment where Americans are super-sensitive and tuned in to the health care debate, Democratic leaders will also have their work cut out for them, convincing more centrist Democrats, facing re-election, to lock arms with the party. Still, the push is on as negotiations continue behind closed doors. Jennifer Wishon, CBN News, Washington. PAT ROBERTSON: Boy, they’re grasping at straws. It is desperate. It is a bad bill. It is a bad thing they’re doing to America. And they want to tell you that it’s a good thing, that they’re going to help you. Well, when the government says they’re going to help you, you’d better hold onto your wallet. And thank goodness for some of the conservative Democrats, like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu and Blanche Lincoln, some of these that are conservative. And they said, “We’re not going to vote for this particular thing.” Maybe they’ll stand firm when the final bill comes down. But if they don’t do it, then the Democrats can’t get this thing through. And it’s not Republicans who are trying to obstruct progress. It is wise people saying, “Wait a minute. This isn’t a good fix.” And by the way, we have seen in some of the press reports that both the leaders of the House and Senate, Senator Reid and Nancy Pelosi, are in some trouble at home. The polls at home in those states of Nevada and California are turning against these two leaders. So by being so public in what they have been doing, they may have damaged their reelection chances. But that’s down the road. Who knows what’s going to happen. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. FLU VACCINE POLL LEE WEBB: Pat, many parents will not be getting their children vaccinated against the swine flu. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll says nearly four in ten parents will skip the shot for their children. Most are worried about the side effects. Three in ten adults say they are not confident the vaccine is safe. More than 800 people in the US have died from the H1N1 virus since April. More than 4,700 have died worldwide. Swine flu hits children, young adults and pregnant women the hardest. VACCINE LEE WEBB: Despite concerns over the vaccine’s safety, though, people in some places are waiting hours to get vaccinated. The CDC says 12 million of the 250 million doses ordered have been made available. Health officials promise there will be enough vaccines to go around, but many people, including those in Congress, want to know what’s taking so long. John Jessup has that story. JOHN JESSUP: From Oregon to Illinois, a familiar sound and sight. While the government continues to map out and monitor its response, Americans all across the country are responding, too. They’re waiting in long lines like these in Montgomery County, Maryland trying to get their H1N1 vaccines. Susan Schwartz (Parent, Potomac, MD): It's not even just the fact of how sick they would be and the suffering, but the fact that people are dying from this and children are dying from this. There's no other choice than to do this. Nyla Devall (Parent, Silver Spring, MD): It just seems like there are increasing numbers of children and young adults that are getting infected by the swine flu, and so my husband and I made the decision that it was critical that we get vaccinated, and especially our daughter. JOHN JESSUP: The government says vaccine production is behind schedule, but health clinics and doctor's offices are getting more doses each day. On Capitol Hill, a search for answers as a Senate panel questions top administration officials. Sen. Joe Lieberman: Am I right that there is not now enough vaccine to vaccinate every American who now wants to be vaccinated? Sen. John McCain: When will all states be caught up? JOHN JESSUP: Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, recovering from recent eye surgery, insisted the government is doing all that it can. Kathleen Sebelius: The goal is to get the vaccine out as fast as possible, and get as many people, particularly, start with the high priority groups, but get it to everyone who wants a dose. JOHN JESSUP: Manufacturers will have enough doses for everyone who wants the vaccine by mid November. But experts say if you’re not in a target group, you should wait. Mary Anderson (Montgomery County, MD HHS): We will be having these clinics for weeks and weeks and weeks to come. And we're asking the general public who aren't in those target groups to hold back and let those people in the high risk groups get the vaccine first. JOHN JESSUP: They also stress the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent the flu from spreading even more, like using hand sanitizers and covering your face when you cough, as the secretary displayed during the hearing. In Washington, John Jessup, CBN News. COMMANDMENTS CASE LEE WEBB: An attorney for two Kentucky counties says courthouse displays there of the Ten Commandments are for educational and historical purposes. It is a new argument in a ten year battle over the commandments. The US Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that religious materials are allowed as long as they are part of a historical or educational display. The counties' lawyer recently told a panel of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals that the new displays like these satisfy that requirement. But the ACLU says the counties are still trying to promote religion. CUTTING EXECUTIVE PAY LEE WEBB: Executives of companies that took federal bailout money will be getting drastic cuts in their base salaries this year, by an average of 90 percent. Their overall salaries, including bonuses and other income, will be cut roughly in half. The cuts apply to seven businesses: Bank of America, AIG, Citigroup, General Motors, GMAC, Chrysler and Chrysler Financial. The chairman of the committee that oversees the bailout funds says the cuts are a message to executives that they cannot take taxpayer money to help them recover from mistakes and still take home a big paycheck. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Lee, my heart bleeds for those people. They’re being cut to only 500,000 dollars salary a year. Can you imagine the privation they’re going to have to undergo? Lee. PRAYING ROBBER LEE WEBB: Pat, our next story demonstrates the power of prayer. Security cameras were rolling as armed robber jumped the counter at an Indianapolis check cashing store. The scared teller started to cry. Well, that’s when the robber apologized and told her he had hit on hard times. So the teller hugged him and offered to pray with him. GRAPHIC: 911 CALL INDIANAPOLIS Angela Montez: When I started crying, and praying and then telling him, “Don't do this,” he was too young to throw away his life. LEE WEBB: After they prayed, the robber removed the lone bullet from his gun, locked the clerk in a bathroom and ran away with 20 dollars. But he later turned himself in, because his mother reportedly told him, Pat, it was the right thing to do. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I hope he will be given mercy. God bless him. He was suffering and didn’t know what was right. But he learned right. And I don’t think he ought to be doing jail time. He’s a good guy. It’s a pity that economics forced him to this. But if you ever read a book called Les Miserables, it showed one poor guy who was hounded by the police for most of his life, because he had taken a few loaves of bread or a few [soo] or whatever kind of—it wasn’t even francs or larger amounts of money. It was just a pittance. And the Inspector Javert was after him for the rest of his life. I think we shouldn’t do that. Somebody like this, hey, slap him on the wrist. Give him 30 days probation or tell him to do some community service or help him get a job, so he can get some money. KRISTI WATTS: Well, coming up, another Obama nominee finds herself in hot water. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: When Obama was in the United States Senate for a short time, he established the record as the most liberal senator. His roots come from very radical sources in Chicago. And it looks he hasn’t given those roots away. He’s still part of his background. And his appointments are so bizarre as to make one pause and wonder. This is the President of the United States. But now he is dealing with a highly controversial nomination to the Equal Employment Commission and Chai Feldblum is up for a seat on the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. Now, this woman is not only a gay activist, she believes in polyamorous sex. She believes in multiple families. She believes that sexual standards should trump religious rights. And it goes on down the line. Now, remember, ladies and gentlemen, the EEOC is the final arbiter if there is a dispute that somebody has claims of racial discrimination, sexual discrimination, age discrimination or some combination thereof. The EEOC is the final arbiter. Is this the kind of person who we want on that august body. White House correspondent David Brody has the story. FOCUS: CHAI FELDBLUM DAVID BRODY: When you elect a president, you're not just electing a person. In essence, you're allowing that person to nominate those in important government positions. Enter Chai Feldblum, the President's pick to be a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. It focuses on discrimination in the workplace, including potential discrimination against sexual minorities. Supporters say Feldblum is one of the most respected lawyers around. Winnie Stachelberg (Center for American Progress): She is full of integrity. She has a fantastic sense of humor and she is one of the brightest people that I've ever worked with and that I've known. DAVID BRODY: Her opponents, like Andrea Lafferty of Traditional Values Coalition, paint a different picture. Lafferty has been following Feldblum for years, and she says she's as radical as you get. And she points to this YouTube video in 2004 for starters. Chai Feldblum: Gay sex is morally good. Now you may think that might be a little crazy to go out there and say gay sex is good, but think a second. Society definitely believes that heterosexual sex is good. DAVID BRODY: Feldblum is well known in gay circles. She has worked for the gay activist group, the Human Rights Campaign, and was a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, who wrote Roe v. Wade. She's the principal author and negotiator for the Americans with Disabilities Act, and she's negotiated and drafted provisions for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, ENDA. Her work on adding language to protect those of a different sexual orientation into ENDA is significant considering that Feldblum could be a member of the EEOC, which will be the agency responsible for issuing the regulations that will enforce ENDA if and when it becomes law. Andrea Lafferty (Tradition Values Coalition): She comes at this as a sort of lesbian Katie Couric. Perky, disarming, and so she continues to push the envelope. DAVID BRODY: Sure to come up at her confirmation hearing will be this Feldblum quote from 2006 on sexual versus religious liberty, quote: “Sexual liberty should win in most cases. There can be a conflict between religious liberty and sexual liberty, but in almost all cases the sexual liberty should win, because that's the only way that the dignity of gay people can be affirmed in any realistic manner. I'm having a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win.” Andrey Lafferty: Her number=one goal is for sexual orientation to trump religious liberties in all aspects of American life. DAVID BRODY: But Feldblum has also written sympathetically about religious believers who are troubled by the social gains made by gays and other sexual minorities. She wrote once, quote, “Failure to acknowledge such a burden on religious beliefs seems, to me, to be deeply disrespectful of religious people. And sometimes, complying with a law designed to establish non-discrimination for one group of people may force a religious person to act in a way contrary to those beliefs. When that happens, the religious person's practice of religion is necessarily burdened.” But she did go on to say, quote, “In most cases, not allowing an exemption to individual religious people will be necessary to achieving this compelling goal of non-discrimination.” In other words, sexual liberty would seem to triumph. However, Feldblum is willing to talk with those who don’t agree with her. She appeared at a recent event held by the conservative family research council. Chai Felblum: We have similar liberty interests going on here and that gay people should understand religious people and religious people should understand gay people more than they do now. DAVID BRODY: Supporters say it's this type of critical thinking that makes her an asset for the EEOC. Winnie Stachelberg: She doesn't approach a problem with one solution or with a set of information or answers from one perspective, but I think she looks at problems from a holistic perspective. DAVID BRODY: Feldblum may also need to provide answers on the issue of marriage. In a paper called “Gay is Good,” she is quoted as saying, “I, for one, am not sure whether marriage is a normatively good institution. I have moved away from the belief that marriage is clearly the best normative way to structure intimate relationships, such that government should be actively supporting this social arrangement above all others.” She also signed a 2006 marriage manifesto that states, quote, “To have our government define as ‘legitimate families’ only those households with couples in conjugal relationships does a tremendous disservice to the many other ways in which people actually construct their families. For example, who among us seriously will argue that the following kinds of households are less socially, economically and spiritually worthy? Committed, loving households in which there is more than one conjugal partner, queer couples who decide to jointly create and raise a child with another queer person or couple, in two households.” Critics say that’s pushing the sexual liberals' agenda far beyond just gay marriage, even beyond polygamy. Andrea Lafferty: That doesn't mean just polygamy. That means multiple people living together engaged in sexual, you know, it could be two men and a woman, three women. It's kind of anything goes. DAVID BRODY: Her supporters say that's just not so. Winnie Stachelberg: She has rejected any notion that she has supported polygamy. She's for monogamous marriage. DAVID BRODY: It's unclear whether any senators will try and block her nomination. It's really too early to tell, but Feldblum will be ready to defend herself. Winnie Stachelberg: There will probably be some senators who are more interested in taking political potshots and scoring points back at home with a constituency that I think is marginalized, and they will probably attack her in some of the ways we can anticipate. DAVID BRODY: The White House isn't commenting, but conservative groups armed with ammunition and getting ready for a culture war battle, especially when they hear Feldblum comments like this: Chai Feldblum: So here's my bottom line: there is a war that needs to be fought, and it's not a war overseas where we're killing people in the name of liberating them. It is a war right here at home where we need to convince people that morality demands full equality for gay people. DAVID BRODY: David Brody, CBN News, Washington. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: What you ask yourself, how in Heaven’s name could a man who has been elected President of the entire nation pick somebody like that for an important commission? And the other thing is, how can the Senate of the United States confirm her? It does seem that this is a time that the Republicans should bring a filibuster and hold up that nomination. This is shocking, because when she gets in that position, she can do an enormous amount of damage to traditional marriage. What did you think of that stuff? KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. I think it’s absurd. And it starts to reflect the President. It’s like “birds of a feather flock together.” Is this the same mentality that he has? And that’s a concern now. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the answer is yes. And I think it’s going to be one more black eye to the President. I don’t know how many eyes he can get, but he sure—or some metaphor, “put his foot in his mouth” or something. But this is amazing, because she’s talking about group sex, a marriage where there are several women in one marriage, several men, couples doing it together back and forth and all this other kind of thing. It’s weird. And she says that they call that sexual freedom. And that will trump any religious beliefs. I wonder how long it’s going to take before a Holy God says, “I’m not going to put up with this any longer.” I just was wondering how long it’s going to take. KRISTI WATTS: Well, the problem is that he commissioned for change. He’s trying to get change. And we need to fight against it. Bottom line. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s the kind of change that nobody ever dreamed that they were voting in when they voted for this President. KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay, you’re next. KRISTI WATTS: Up next, four time NBA champion Derek Fisher. Derek Fisher: God blessed me with an ability to play this game very well. None of it really would have happened, none of it, without God’s blessings. He has ranked third all time for three pointers made in NBA finals. Derek is not only a leader on the basketball court, he is also an outstanding husband, father and man of faith. DEREK FISHER SHAWN BROWN: For 13 seasons, NBA Guard Derek Fisher has been a fierce competitor on the basketball court. As a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, he’s a four-time NBA champion. Derek Fisher: You have to work hard at things. You have to be disciplined at things, in order to be good at them, to be great at them. And so that goes for your professional career, your personal life and your relationships with people, and as well as your relationship with God. SHAWN BROWN: While attending the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, Derek played basketball and centered his life on God. Derek Fisher: I made a contact with our strength and conditioning coach at the time. His name was Ken Coggins. And he introduced me to FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and that’s where my individual relationship with God really, really took off. SHAWN BROWN: When his collegiate career ended, Derek continued to work hard, knowing the challenge of making an NBA roster would be great. Derek Fisher: I just totally put everything on my faith in God, that if I concentrate on something, and I’m disciplined at it and I work hard at it, that something good will come out of it. SHAWN BROWN: In the summer of ‘96, future NBA greats Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Allen Iverson headlined one of the strongest drafts in the history of the NBA. And in the second round of that draft, Derek Fisher’s prayers were answered. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. He celebrated and then prayed with his parents, pastor and members of their congregation. Derek Fisher: We took that moment to just say thank you, because we all know that none of it really would have happened, none of it, without God’s blessings. SHAWN BROWN: Derek knew all about the temptations that face suddenly rich, young NBA players. Derek Fisher: I didn’t want to be a follower. I wasn’t going to do what other people were doing just because they were doing it if it really wasn’t the right thing to do. SHAWN BROWN: So before making the cross-country move to LA, he went to church. Derek Fisher: After hearing the sermon, I just walked up in front of the church in front of everybody and rededicated my life to the Lord. SHAWN BROWN: Derek quickly established himself as one of the premier point guards in the league. He married and started a family with his new wife, Candace. And before their daughter Tatem was one year old, they got shocking news from the doctor. Derek Fisher: Tatem was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, which is a cancer of the eye, at ten months. When you talk about pain or hurt, it was just one of the hardest punches in the gut that I’ve ever received. I had no idea whether or not she would be okay, whether or not we could find a cure for the cancer, whether or not she would have to have her eye removed. SHAWN BROWN: But through prayer and proper treatment, Tatum was cured and is totally cancer free. Derek Fisher: At this point, there are no signs of the cancer returning or of us having to be fearful that something catastrophic could happen. SHAWN BROWN: Today, even with a rigorous NBA schedule, he makes time to be there for his family. Derek Fisher: My parents didn’t have the opportunities that my wife and I have now, from a quality of life standpoint. But one thing that did not ever lack was their presence. They were there helping us with homework and making sure that we were doing the things that we needed to do and giving us curfews, and a time when you’d better be home by the time those streetlights come on. That kind of love and discipline and structure that I try to bring into my home now as a husband and as a father. SHAWN BROWN: Derek discusses his faith and family in his new book, Character Driven. Derek Fisher: My character has always been important to me. That was the one thing that I knew, no matter what, I had to hold that strong. SHAWN BROWN: As a husband, father and athlete, Derek Fisher gives God the credit for his success. Derek Fisher: God blessed me with an ability to play this game very well. So then, in response to that, to show Him that I appreciate that blessing, I’m supposed to try to be the best at playing the game of basketball. The source of my power and strength is God, and I know it, without a shadow of a doubt. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: What a wonderful guy. KRISTI WATTS: He seems awesome. PAT ROBERTSON: Fantastic. It’s so hard. Somebody is 22-23 years old, and all of a sudden they sign a contract that gives them 40-50 million dollars. They’ve never had that kind of money. They could go wild. But not Derek. He went to church. KRISTI WATTS: I love that. PAT ROBERTSON: He sough the Lord. KRISTI WATTS: But he also has the power of praying parents, too, which is a key. PAT ROBERTSON: Amen. Okay, what have you got? Role call reports Alexander warns the White House has made efforts to marginalize the US Chamber of Commerce, has gone after Fox News, repeatedly criticized banks and investment firms and attacked insurance companies in the health care debate, and says the enemies campaign even extends to Congress. NY SODA TAX? JOHN JESSUP: The New York Post reports the state’s Governor David Paterson is bringing up a possible soda tax again. The plan would add an 18 percent tax on sugary soft drinks instead of creating taxes on the wealthy. Paterson says the tax would pour more than 500 million dollars into the state’s coffers. The governor promises to put the tax in his budget proposal for the New York legislature to vote on next year. A similar tax is growing in popularity with Democrats on the federal level as they look for a way to fund health care reform. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Have you ever heard the title “home wrecker,” somebody who actually sets out to destroy marriages? Well, the next person we’re going to tell you about, Garlena Hines, took home wrecking to a whole new level. For years, she deliberately set out to destroy one marriage after another. But she was fueled by her rage against men, a rage that began when Garlena was just a little girl. GARLENA HINES Garlena Hines: I was five years old when I was first molested. The molestation went on from the age of five to 19. And my life was never the same after that. MICHELLE WILSON: Like most abused children, Garlena Hines was molested by someone she knew. Garlena Hines: And I’m am thinking, “When will this ever stop? Is this how my life is going to be? Somebody’s going to always be violating me, touching me?” MICHELLE WILSON: By her teen years, shame over what had happened turned to anger and severe behavioral problems. Since Garlena didn’t grow up with a father, her mother felt a role model would help her. That’s when a 42-year-old married male cousin offered to help. Garlena Hines: And it started with, “Let’s just walk on the pier. Let’s just walk to get the breeze.” And I’m thinking, “This is okay, but we are holding hands as if we are a couple. Maybe there is something wrong with that.” And I’m thinking, “Could this be happening again?” MICHELLE WILSON: When Garlena turned 14, her 44-year-old cousin took her to a hotel room. Garlena Hines: And so on my way to the hotel, I am thinking, “This is not something I want to do.” And before the night was over, I had lost my virginity, something I knew I could never, ever get back. MICHELLE WILSON: Garlena had always gone to church with her mother. One Sunday, the preacher got her attention. Garlena Hines: And the minister was talking on the reality of Hell. In the middle of his sermon, I get up and I walk to the altar. And he looks. He said, “Somebody get this child.” And I said, “No, I don’t want to go to Hell, because if I die now I’m going to go to Hell.” And the lady took me aside, and she began to pray for me. And she gave me the plan of salvation, and I felt so cleansed at that point. And I wanted to tell everybody. MICHELLE WILSON: And that included telling her cousin who was molesting her. Garlena Hines: I said to him, “Guess what? I gave my life to Christ. I’m not going to Hell.” And he says to me, “That doesn’t mean we have to stop sleeping together.” And everything in me like crushed. And I’m like, “Oh, my God, I’m stuck.” MICHELLE WILSON: Although Garlena says she asked Jesus to save her, she didn’t let Him become the Lord of her life. She and her cousin’s sexual activity continued until Garlena was 19. Garlena Hines: It did something for me internally. It did something for me emotionally. And so I knew. And although I was going to church, I was in church and understanding what I am doing, but the stronghold he had over me was strong over me, and I didn’t have enough in me to break it or to fight it. And then I couldn’t tell anybody that could probably help me pull away from it. MICHELLE WILSON: After Garlena graduated from high school, her cousin lost interest in her and stopped calling. She went to college and started dating other men. Then one night she was raped by a friend. Garlena didn’t tell anyone, and it became just another secret in a lifetime filled with secrets and shame. Garlena Hines: And I made a vow to take revenge on every man that I could. And whether that meant tearing up homes, whether it meant tearing up marriages, I had a vendetta. And if I broke up a marriage, I didn’t care. I moved to the next marriage and to the next marriage and to the next marriage. MICHELLE WILSON: Garlena became pregnant with twins from one of her affairs. At five months, she miscarried and lost both babies. Shortly after that, she made the decision to end her life. Garlena Hines: And I heard this bird just chirping. And it began to become distracting. Now I’m on my way to kill myself, but I’m being distracted from killing myself. And I heard the voice of God for the first time. And God said to me, “If I can take care of the sparrow, I can take care of you.” I dropped my keys. I fell on the floor and I said, “God, thank you. Get me out of this.” MICHELLE WILSON: During a New Years Eve church service, Garlena made a decision. Garlena Hines: And my pastor got up and he said, “We’re going to be free in ’93.” And that was the word I needed. There was no bolt of lightning. There was no altar call. I didn’t fall out. Nobody laid hands on me. But at that moment, I felt something break in me. The greatest thing that night was after everything I’ve done, whether it was my fault or not, everything I’ve done, I realized that night He still loved me. He hadn’t changed His mind about me. His plan for my life hadn’t changed. MICHELLE WILSON: Garlena started developing a relationship with God. Garlena Hines: I went after God with all my heart. I wanted God. I hungered and thirsted after Him. I wanted Him more than I wanted any relationship or any man. And that was the turning point of the transformation. MICHELLE WILSON: Over time, the biggest part of her healing came when she forgave her abusers. Garlena Hines: Matthew 6:14 helped me, and it says if you don’t forgive those who trespass against you, your Father in Heaven won’t forgive you. God showed me how to walk in love. Forgiveness sometimes is the best justice. MICHELLE WILSON: Today, Garlena is raising her 14-year-old niece. She’s also written a book and helps other women who have been abused. Garlena Hines: I encourage women everywhere I go that they can be free. They can be whole. And whatever they feel that God has called them to do. MICHELLE WILSON: And Garlena has a message that just isn’t for abused victims, but for everyone who needs to know that God hasn’t forgotten them. Garlena Hines: He doesn’t want you to stay broken. He doesn’t want you to stay torn. He came that you will have a whole life and have it in Him. It took me seven years. Don’t give up. Don’t back down. Have you been trapped like this young lady was? Were you trapped by somebody, and you couldn’t get out of it? An older cousin imposed his will on this girl. She just didn’t know what to do, so she went along with it. She cried out to God, but she really couldn’t break free. But God will set you free. He will break the bonds that are holding you. You can be free. You can be free. You can be free of demonic influence. You can be free of fear. You can be set free from stuff that you just can’t stand. You can be free from filthy thoughts, the addiction of pornography or the addiction to drugs. You can be free of these things if you just will turn to the Lord and cry out to Him. And if you hunger after Him more than these other things, if you hunger after God, He will set you free. Do you want to be free? Free. Free at last. Thank God Almighty I’m free at last. Do you want to be free? Well, if you want to be free, I want you to pray with me. And let’s pray for freedom. You want to be free. Now, you name—I’m going to lead you in prayer. You name the problem that is holding you. You name the demonic power that has gripped you. Pray these words and pray them from your heart. “Lord Jesus Christ.” That’s right. Pray with me. “Lord Jesus Christ, you know how I have been a prisoner. And you know what it means to have this problem. Set me free today, Lord, from what has obsessed me. And that’s why one woman in California has dedicated her resources to building wells, more than 100 of them so far. DR. MASSEY 100TH WELL ANDREW KNOX: During the dry season, cattle, wild animals and the people in this remote village in southern India only have one source of water: this small, contaminated spring. Laxmi and her family spend hours each day just getting a couple jugs of water. Laxmi: Every morning we go to get water, so we can cook and bathe. What should I do?” PAT ROBERTSON: Bobbi, I think you ought to sort of chill out and let him be who he is. He’s not trying to have sexual relations with these people. He’s just friendly, so let him be friendly. And the more you get reserved and the more you get mad, the more you’re going to drive him away. So just enjoy the fact that he likes everybody. And if he’s friendly to women, good for him. He’s not going to hurt anybody. I just think you’ve got a determination of, quote, “what a Christian man should be.” And if he doesn’t do what you think, then you get mad. Let him be himself. If he’s, quote, “ebullient,” if he’s friendly, that’s good. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, that’s the guy’s perspective. Here’s the girl’s perspective. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes? KRISTI WATTS: Pat, if it makes a wife uncomfortable and her husband is all flirty/friendly with women, and he’s placing her in a position where it’s making her uncomfortable, then he needs to pull back out of respect and love for her. That’s all I have to say. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, they can find a common ground. All right, what’s next? KRISTI WATTS: Leroy writes in and says, “Pat, I’m a new believer, and I have a question about prayer. How often should I pray? My sister says that I should get up early in the morning to pray. What do you recommend?” PAT ROBERTSON: Listen, we pray with our spirit. And we can essentially be praying all the time. We’re talking to the Lord through our spirit. And there can be times that you have a need, and you say, “Lord, what do I do?” And God will speak to you. And you can say, “Well, bless them,” or “Bring healing.” Or somebody will come to your mind that’s sick, and you pray for them at that time. But I think the Bible says, “Early will I seek Thee.” And it just seems to me that the best time to really seek the Lord is when it’s quiet and the morning comes, before all the hassle of the day. And if you’re a wife, you’ve got all these little children that need help. And you’ve got to get up ahead of them and seek the Lord. “Early will I seek Thee.” And that’s the best time. All right. KRISTI WATTS: I used to ask myself that very question, Pat, like did it matter if it was in the morning or at night. And I was reading the Word, and I kept seeing the word first fruits, first fruits. And I started to think about that. And the Lord wants us to give the first fruits of our tithe, obviously. But then the Lord started speaking to my heart. He wants us to give the first fruit of our time as well. And there’s something just precious with that. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s good. KRISTI WATTS: So I think early in the morning, it’s an honor to the Lord. And that just sets your day right. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, here’s one from Martha, who says, “Dear Pat, what did Jesus mean when He said that He came to fulfill the law? I thought Jesus came to free us from the law. Could you explain this?” KRISTI WATTS: That’s a good question. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the law wasn’t quite fulfilled, but when it was fulfilled, the requirements of the law, in a sense, were over. He had fulfilled them. Here is what the law said, and He did what the law demanded. And that was it. He fulfilled the law. But part of the law was looking to the coming of a Messiah, looking to the one that God was going to send to save people from their sins. Jesus did that. But He lived perfectly under the law. That was the fulfillment of the law in His own life. KRISTI WATTS: It’s interesting, I was talking to a girlfriend of mine, and we were having this kind of debate, because when we think about the law, we think about the Old Testament. And people say, “But Jesus came, and now grace has covered the law.” But there are also statutes and commands that we still need to follow. Do you know what I’m trying to say? Probably not. I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. PAT ROBERTSON: No, you are. Well, the moral law keeps on. He said anybody who tells people to disobey these things, he’ll be least in the Kingdom. So these things are still there. You look at the Ten Commandments, love the Lord your God with all your heart and your mind and your soul. That’s what the Lord said. That’s the first commandment. You keep that. He didn’t abrogate that. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. Okay, here is BJ, who writes in and says, “I have been taught that when you die you immediately go to be with the Lord in Heaven. So I don’t understand the scripture that says that when Christ returns, the ‘dead in Christ will rise first.’ If they are dead, aren’t they already in Heaven?” PAT ROBERTSON: I think what the difference is that our spirits and our bodies, the bodies are in the ground and will rise at the resurrection. And they will be joined with our spirits. But you’re right. When the spirit “at home with the body, absent from the Lord,” it’s the way it is. But when we die, He told the thief on the cross, “This day you will be with Me in paradise.” So that’s what the Bible teaches, that our spirits will go to be with the Lord. And later on, at the general resurrection, our bodies will rise. He will recreate bodies and clothe us, He said not that we should go around naked, but we will be clothed from above. And the clothing will take place at the resurrection. KRISTI WATTS: Isn’t it weird how you have like these random thoughts when it comes to that? And I was thinking, “Okay, Lord, when we have that new body, is it going to be—am I going to be perky? Am I going to be tight?” Do you know what I mean? Stupid stuff. “Am I going to be young? Am I going to be old? Am I going to be a child?” Do you ever think about stuff like that? PAT ROBERTSON: You’re going to be spiritual, and spiritual lives forever. It doesn’t worry about the fact that it’s gaining weight. KRISTI WATTS: That’s true. PAT ROBERTSON: Thank goodness. KRISTI WATTS: Amen. Sandy writes in and says, “I’ve been baptized in the Holy Spirit, and I can speak in tongues. My family cannot comprehend why this gift was given to me, so they keep their distance. I don’t want to be estranged from my family, so what can I do or say to glorify Jesus when I’m around them?” PAT ROBERTSON: Just live your life. Be honest. Be loving. Be kind. And that’s the best way to glorify the Lord. You don’t have to be bursting in messages in tongues just because you’re around somebody. You don’t do that. And I think you keep that to yourself. That’s your language between you and the Lord. And I think that would be better. And let your light so shine before men that they might see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven. So let them see your good works and glorify your Father. That’s what He’s looking for. Are you controlled? Do you have fits of anger? Are you selfish? Are you mean? Are you kind and gracious?
