UnderWing Transcripts PO Box 16282 Clearwater, Florida 33766 540 455-2333 / UnderWing@underwingtranscripts.com ________________________________________ The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Tuesday, October 27, 2009 PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. In their frantic quest to get some kind of a health care bill, Senate Democrats are trying a new tactic. They want to give states the option to include the public option. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But new reports are raising questions about the government’s ability to handle even basic health programs. Here is reporter Jennifer Wishon. CARE JENNIFER WISHON: Congress's fix for health care now has a sharper focus after Majority Leader Harry Reid revealed that government run health insurance, or a “public option,” will be part of the Senate plan. Sen. Harry Reid ([D-NV] Majority Leader): The best way to move forward is through a public option with the opt-out provision for states. Under this concept, states will be able to determine whether the public option works well for them and will have the ability to opt out. JENNIFER WISHON: Reid, who faces a tough re-election battle next year, is taking a gamble. The public option is controversial among Americans and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle; and even Reid admits he does not yet have the 60 votes needed to avoid a Republican filibuster. And some question whether or not the government should be entrusted with health care when it's having problems with more basic tasks, like delivering vaccines for the swine flu. Americans from California to Oklahoma and Illinois are waiting in lines for hours only to get turned away when the clinic's supplies run out. Elizabeth Heubeck (Seeking H1N1): I thought I would have been able to get the vaccine at my children's pediatrician. It hasn’t been offered there. County clinics have been canceled and overwhelmed by lines. JENNIFER WISHON: Even Americans most at risk, like pregnant women, are having a hard time getting vaccinated. And for some, that's a very real concern. Roxanne Checkley (Seeking H1N1 Vaccine): I really don't want to take my daughter very many places. I don't want her to be around kids. I don’t know if she’s going to get sick, and I don't want her to be sick. I'm like really nervous. I’m scared. Nicole Lurie (Department of Health and Human Services): This epidemic is continuing to progress and more people are going to emergency rooms. More people are going to hospitals, and sadly more people are dying. JENNIFER WISHON: And now, a new report from the Government Accountability Office shows the Food and Drug Administration has allowed drugs for cancer and other diseases to stay on the market even when follow-up studies revealed they did not extend patient lives. But despite that, FDA officials say they have no plans to get more aggressive. The FDA says the report paints an overly negative picture of the agency's accelerated approval process of drugs to treat the most serious diseases like HIV. But according to the report, since the program began, the FDA has never pulled an unsuccessful drug off the market, more reasons why critics will ask if the government can handle the nation's health care. Jennifer Wishon, CBN News. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Jennifer. Well, you look at those crowds. If that isn’t enough to scare you away from this public option. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow. Wow. PAT ROBERTSON: They think the government is now going to handle your health. They can’t even get out vaccines for people, and they’ve had a good year or better to get the supply together, and they don’t have it yet. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, and then actually telling people that they need to get it, but being unable to make it available. Crazy. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. And then they come in these gigantic crowds and have to wait for hours, and that’s the way it’s going to be with your health care all the way up and down the line, ladies and gentlemen. You watch and see. Hey, by the way, today is Tuesday, right? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. All day. PAT ROBERTSON: You sure? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. Well, a week from now is going to be election day in Virginia and New Jersey. So I just want to tell people to do your patriotic civic duty and be sure to vote. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Be knowledgeable. There are lots of wonderful voter guides in the paper these days. PAT ROBERTSON: All the above. I’m not saying who to vote for, just vote. Make sure you’re an informed voter. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, sir. PAT ROBERTSON: You ready? TERRY MEEUWSEN: I’m ready. PAT ROBERTSON: Are you going to fulfill your patriotic . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: I am ready. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. CONSERVATIVES POLL LEE WEBB: Pat, more Americans call themselves conservative than any other political name. Forty percent say they are conservative, 36 percent moderate and only 20 percent liberal, according to the latest Gallup poll. It’s the first time conservatives have outnumbered moderates since 2004. Americans are also growing more conservative on specific issues. Forty-five percent say there's too much government regulation of business and industry. A record 42 percent would like to see labor unions have less influence in the country. And 53 percent want the government to, quote, “promote traditional values.” Gallup says this growing conservatism could have important implications for next year's midterm elections, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t think there’s any question about it. And I think that the Democrats are going to run from the liberal label as far as they can get. And, of course, Republicans would do well to label themselves conservative. But these basic issues are coming down to where the rubber meets the road. And those who will accept a liberal label are going to find themselves out of office. Lee. BUDGET PANEL LEE WEBB: Some leading senators are trying to rein in Washington’s massive spending. Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad are proposing a panel that will review government spending and taxes and try to find bipartisan ways to stop the country from drowning in debt. Both senators are members of the Senate Budget Committee. They’re suggesting a panel with eight Democrats and eight Republicans. It would take 12 votes to agree on any plan, but House and Senate leaders oppose the idea. STIMULUS LEE WEBB: And speaking of spending, the government approved an economic stimulus bill costing more than three-quarters of a trillion dollars earlier this year. But unemployment is still climbing, and some critics wonder if the stimulus was worth it. Here is Carolyn Castleberry. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: With new construction projects underway and federal money helping the states to avoid layoffs, the White House says the stimulus plan is working. Vice President Joe Biden: Don't just take my word for it. Analysts from Moody's to IHS Global Insight to the Economic Policy Institute and others all estimate the Recovery Act has created or saved between 500,000 to 750,000 jobs. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: But not all economists are buying it. Peter Morici (Economist): I find it very difficult to believe that 750,000 jobs have been created by stimulus money that has mostly gone unspent. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: Only about ten percent of the 787 billion dollars of the stimulus has been spent so far. The President signed the stimulus plan in February, and since then the rate of job loss has steadily declined. But overall, jobs are still being cut. In fact, more than 2.3 million Americans have lost their jobs since the stimulus went into effect. That’s a big chunk of the seven million jobs lost since the recession started last year. Peter Morici: There will be some impact. In 2010 and 2011, we'll likely have about 2.5 to three million temporary jobs, but we've lost permanently seven million private sector jobs. As a consequence, this is simply not repairing what's broken in the economy. CAROLYN CASTLEBERRY: Carolyn Castleberry, CBN News. LEE WEBB: Pat, what do you think? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, what I think is, again, this is the gang that can’t shoot straight. For months and months and months and months they’ve had this bill passed, yet they can’t even get the money out the door. It shouldn’t be too hard to write a check. That’s one of the easiest things to do. But, oh, no, they have to have all kinds of bells and whistles and bureaucracy and levels of authority and checks and balances and all this. And when it’s all finished, the money doesn’t go out, and people lose their jobs. So people will say the stimulus isn’t working. Well, it hasn’t really been tried, but it’s not our fault. Lee. OBAMA AFGHANISTAN LEE WEBB: Pat, President Obama says he will not rush to decide about sending more troops to Afghanistan, that despite warnings from top generals and Senate Republicans that time is short. Fourteen Americans were killed in Afghanistan Monday. And at Jacksonville’s Naval Air Station, the President told US sailors he will be cautious about sending more service members over there. President Obama: And while I will never hesitate to use force to protect the American people or our vital interests, I also promise you this, and this is very important as we consider our next steps in Afghanistan: I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm’s way. I won’t risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. LEE WEBB: Pat, there is some speculation that the President will decide in a few weeks to send more troops in, but not to the level that General McChrystal would like. PAT ROBERTSON: He ran for President for a couple of years. He had a campaign that talked over and over again about Afghanistan being the key place and Iraq being the wrong place. He had it all talked about. And then he comes into office, and he’s been into office lo these many months, and he’s got his team all together. And he’s not going to, quote, “rush a decision?” He can’t a make a decision. And he ought to say, “Well, we’re not going to do it, and that would be fine. But he obviously hasn’t made up his mind. Well, CBN’s Chuck Holton recently returned from Afghanistan. And Lee, you can tell us about what he had to say. HOLTON ON AFGHANISTAN LEE WEBB: Yes, I talked to Chuck, and he traveled on helicopters similar to the one that crashed on Monday over there. And I talked to him about that. CHUCK HOLTON: From what I’ve been told so far, Lee, the crash in the north that resulted in the deaths of ten people was part of a unit that I was actually embedded with just several weeks ago in Afghanistan. And several of those killed were men that we were with while we were there. I can tell you these guys, it’s the first DEA casualties in Afghanistan since 2005. And they’re going to be bringing these guys home the next few days, and they’re really mourning right now. LEE WEBB: So these are men that you got to know personally on these missions. Is that right? CHUCK HOLTON: That’s right. LEE WEBB: Chuck, there has been speculation as to whether there might have been a mechanical malfunction on at least one of these helicopters. You say that you saw lots of problems with helicopter maintenance, simply because of the tempo of operations over there and such a harsh environment. Tell us about that. CHUCK HOLTON: That’s right, Lee. The maintenance people are doing all they can to keep the helicopters they have running. The problem is they just don’t have enough helicopters. And so with the op tempo that they have going there, they have to keep those helicopters running day and night. And there were several, especially down in the south, with the Marines that I was that were clearly in need of more maintenance. And they’re doing the best they can, but they just don’t have enough machines. And I’ve been told in the last 60 days they have doubled the number of helicopters that are there, and they’re not even close to the number that they really need to get the job done right now. LEE WEBB: And we will have more from Chuck Holton on Afghanistan later on The 700 Club. TEXAS PRAYER SUIT LEE WEBB: A legal battle is brewing in Houston over the city council's practice of praying before meetings. A woman by the name of Kay Staley has filed a federal lawsuit against the city. She says the long-held tradition of opening the meetings with prayer violates the Constitution. Kay Staley (Plaintiff): Just because it's always been doesn't make it right. There are a lot of people that feel exactly the same way I do. Most people are afraid to come out and say anything, because they’re afraid of their jobs or their friends. LEE WEBB: The suit alleges that allowing prayers of any faith violates the so-called separation of church and state. One city council member, though, calls the lawsuit frivolous. Mike Sullivan (City Council Member): I think they are publicity stunts. I don't think it's a genuine concern. No one has come before to do this at the city of Houston that I am aware of. Don Cheatham (Assistant City Attorney): I think that’s what we need to do is review the lawsuit and see what they’re alleging, and then look at our practices and our policies and make sure we are in conformity with current law. LEE WEBB: In 2003, Staley sued to have a Bible monument removed from a Harris Country courthouse. That’s in Houston as well. Three years later an appeals court ordered the monument removed, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it makes me sick at the stomach when I see the misappropriation and the misapplication of the establishment clause of the United States Constitution. There is nothing in our Constitution that says we need to have, quote, “separation of church and state.” It just isn’t in the Constitution. It existed in the Soviet Union constitution, but not in ours. And we have added to the Constitution something that doesn’t exist. And people say, “Oh, yes, separation of church and state. That’s in the Constitution.” No, it’s not. Separation of sectarian religion from the public forum is indeed part of the Constitution, but not the other. And when you think that one weirdo or one person who hates God, one atheist, whatever, can tear away the fabric of religious belief of our society, it’s something terrible. I believe in people having their day in court, but I do think that we should have majority rule, and the majority says we think praying before we get going with a city council meeting is a good thing. Lee. PENN STATE T-SHIRT LEE WEBB: Well, Pat, just when you thought political correctness couldn’t get any more absurd, a long comes a controversy brewing at Penn State University, and it all centers around a T-shirt that won a student design competition to promote school spirit there. It’s with a blue stripe similar to the Nittany Lions' distinctive football helmets. Penn State is printed through the stripe, as you can see by that T-shirt there, and some folks say that looks too much like a cross. Six complaints have been filed with the university, including one from the Anti-Defamation League. But on university official tells Fox News, “Six complaints is not a controversy.” Now, the T-shirts have been selling like hotcakes, we understand. And we haven’t heard of any plans to pull the T-shirts from the store shelves. NORWAY TAX FORMS LEE WEBB: If you live in Norway, and you want to know how much your neighbor paid in taxes last year, all you have to do is go online. The government reveals that information ever year. Supporters say the practice is important to keep an open democracy. But opponents say tax records are a private matter between the taxpayer and the government. They claim criminals can go online to find targets, and children of low-income families are teased about what their parents earn. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Lee, I don’t run Norway, so I think they have a lot of oil money up there. They’ve done a pretty good job. But I don’t think opening your records to the general public is a good thing. That’s one thing that we have in this country is the sanctity of the tax returns. An agent can go to jail if he reveals what’s in somebody’s tax return. TERRY MEEUWSEN: What’s the point of making them public? That’s kind of . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Well, maybe it promotes democracy, but it also promotes crime and shame. All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, really. Well, up next, “send in the Marines” takes on a whole new meaning. Woman: Forty-eight percent of the Afghan population is female, and the infantry units cannot engage that percentage of the population. But we can. TERRY MEEUWSEN: We’ll show you how these female Marines are turning around the war in Afghanistan, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: CONSTANTINE LEE WEBB: Coming up later, take a trip back to the fourth century. Man: It was a terrible, topsy-turvy time. LEE WEBB: For the biggest event in Christianity since the Resurrection. Man: This was a dramatic, dramatic move. LEE WEBB: One that would change history forever. Man: There is no question that he felt called by God to Christianize the Roman Empire. LEE WEBB: Discover the life of Constantine and the battle for the soul of the world, on today’s 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA Spokesman: Seventy-seven million baby boomers hope to retire in the next ten to 20 years, and just three percent will be financially independent. But Uncle Sam wants to help you put gold into your retirement plan by creating a self-directed Precious Metal IRA. There are no tax penalties or new contributions needed to convert an existing IRA or other retirement fund into gold. Pat Boone: This is Pat Boone to tell you about Swiss America’s three step plan for successful gold investing. First, call Swiss America. Request their free book, materials, and rare opportunity CD. Second, review the materials and learn why gold has more than doubled in the last five years and why experts say it may double again. And third, earn a return through growth of your gold investment. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEXT DAY PROMO GRAPHIC: AMAZING WEIGHT LOSS LEE WEBB: Tomorrow on Skinny Wednesday. Get the diet plan that helped this man lose more than 200 pounds in just two years. * * * GRAPHIC: ACORN UNVEILED LEE WEBB: Plus, voter fraud, tax evasion. Woman: I just have experience in how not to get caught. LEE WEBB: And possibly prostitution. Is ACORN the epitome of corruption, or just the target of modern day McCarthyism? Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, in some Muslim countries, women are not allowed to interact with men who are not family members. And that creates a problem for the US military in places such as Afghanistan where nearly half the population is female. So the Marines are taking steps to reach out to this key segment of the Afghan society. Chuck Holton has more from southern Afghanistan. FOCUS: FEMALE MARINES CHUCK HOLTON: As fighting continues to rage in Afghanistan, the search is on for ways to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people. Toward that end, the Marines are employing a secret weapon in the heavily contested south that they hope will help turn the tables on Taliban influence there. From a distance, this might look like an average squad out on patrol. But look closer, and you may be surprised to find that some of these Marines are women. They are part of a Female Engagement team here on the front lines reaching out to part of the Afghan population that, until now, has been ignored. 1st Lt. Hannah Sides (USMC): Forty-eight percent of the Afghan population is female, and the infantry units cannot engage that percentage of the population. But we can. CHUCK HOLTON: First Lieutenant Hannah Sides leads the team. 1st Lt. Hannah Sides: We've had four patrols so far. We've gone out and engaged multiple females. Woman: He says about three or four of our women can do inside. 1st Lt. Hannah Sides: we’ve been received very, very well. We take a native speaker with us. They are thrilled to have people that actually care about them and want to come see how they are doing. They’re breaking fast right now, so they’re making dinner for tonight. Everybody is celebrating Ramadan. So we only spoke for a minute and told them about the medical clinic that we’re having tomorrow. CHUCK HOLTON: Their translator, an Afghan-American woman named Hali Jilani, believes this strategy is vital. Hali Jilani: If we don't have those women to go into the communities and connect to the women, we're not going to be able to effectively succeed. Those are the people whom I've always considered our natural allies, and yet we're not getting to them. CHUCK HOLTON: So far, this approach has been very well received, and Afghan women aren't shy in sharing their opinions about the war. Hali Jilani (Interpreter): And what a lot of women are telling us is that, “Look, for God's sake, get all these guys to stop fighting. Can’t we do something? Can't we women do something?” CHUCK HOLTON: And these female Marines are definitely doing their part. Living conditions are tough, with extreme temperatures and lots of dust. But there is no special treatment and it's not expected. Woman: We love camping. We’re Marines. Woman: I wear the same Marine Corps Emblem. I am a Marine. If you look at any of the girls around here they'll tell you first, “I'm a Marine.” CHUCK HOLTON: Be that as it may, Lieutenant Sides has a husband back at home who might not be as enthusiastic about her front line tour of duty, especially considering that this unit lost five Marines in combat over the summer. 1st Lt. Hannah Sides: He worries about me, but if he didn't worry about me, he wouldn't love me. Hali Jilani: These girls are absolutely awesome. We have to go in and assure people that we are not the enemy. We are not the former Soviet Union, that we're actually coming to their houses, not just as medics and caregivers. We’re actually coming to them as friends, and that is what I find so wonderful. The war in this case is over the souls of a community. There is no run anymore. CHUCK HOLTON: Chuck Holton, CBN News, in southern Afghanistan. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: It’s an amazing situation. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Fascinating. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, hats off to these women. They’re very courageous. And I don’t like splitting up families. I don’t think taking mothers away from their children and sending them to Afghanistan is a good policy. We do it, and the feminists insist on it, but I think it’s stupid. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think it’s been in play for a long time now. And a lot of women really feel called to that. In this situation, they can accomplish something that a man cannot. PAT ROBERTSON: They can. But if they’ve got little children at home, they should be with the little children and not over in Afghanistan talking to Muslim women. But in any event, we’ve got enough of those good Marines. And it’s amazing, there is no such thing as an ex-Marine. I’m a Marine. I’m an ex-Marine. And they said, “No way, there is no such thing as an ex-Marine. You’re a Marine.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Oxymoron. PAT ROBERTSON: And those women are Marines and good for them. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Hear, hear. Well, still ahead, meet the man who Christianized the most powerful nation on earth. Man: When Constantine was converted, it was at a time when only ten percent of the Roman Empire was Christian. At the end of the 300s, 95 percent of Rome was Christian. TERRY MEEUWSEN: See the miracle that helped him change history, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2: COOKIE (Singing): Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar? Woman: I stole the cookie from the cookie jar. (Singing): Who, you? Woman: Yes, me. And I lost 105 pounds. (Singing): Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar? Man: I stole the cookie from the cookie jar. (Singing): Who, you? Man: Yes, me. And I lost 115 pounds in six months. Announcer: If you want to lose up to 15 pounds a month, get Smart For Life cookies. That’s 1-800-209-0368. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Christianity began with a small group of Jewish believers in a remote corner of the Roman Empire. Three hundred years later, it became the official religion of the most powerful empire on earth. How did Christianity conquer an empire? It started on this day almost 1,700 years ago on October 27th in 312 AD. Three one two AD. A Roman Empire said a prayer and had a vision that changed history. Here’s Gordon, who has the story of Constantine the Great. CONSTANTINE GRAPHIC: CONSTANTINE CALLED ON GOD WITH EARNEST PRAYER . . . THAT HE WOULD REVEAL TO HIM WHO HE WAS. GORDON ROBERTSON: Once the greatest power on earth, Rome in the fourth century was on the brink of collapse. Paul L. Maier, PHD: Well, put it this way. Twenty out of the twenty-two emperors were assassinated. So it was a terribly, topsy-turvy time. GORDON ROBERTSON: Two co-emperors fought for control. Constantine in Great Britain and Maxentius in Rome. The empire was ravaged by war, poverty and the persecution of Christians, the bloodiest in history. Paul L. Maier, PHD (Editor, Church History by Eusebius): When Christians are under duress, they certainly stand up for the faith magnificently with God’s help. And the result is quite dramatic. GORDON ROBERTSON: And Christians in Rome were about to find a champion in Constantine. Paul L. Maier, PHD: There is no question, but he felt, believe it or not, called by God to Christianize the Roman Empire. GORDON ROBERTSON: Constantine decided the time had come to overthrow Maxentius, the man he called a pagan and a tyrant. The year was 312. Paul L. Maier, PHD: Maxentius is probably the incarnation of everything evil. He was a terrible, terrible emperor. He consulted witches and wizards regularly. He liked to auger the future by various foul means. One included, this is hard to believe, ripping open the bellies of pregnant women and checking out the fetuses’ livers for clues as to tomorrow. Horrible things. GORDON ROBERTSON: Constantine’s army battled through Europe, defeating the forces of Maxentius. On October 27th, they were poised to invade the city of Rome. Constantine camped here, nine miles north of Rome. His army was outnumbered four to one. So he prayed to God for help. And here in this field, he had a vision that changed the course of history. GRAPHIC: October 27, AD 312 Around noon, Constantine looked up at the sky and saw a sign above the sun. The symbol was a cross formed by the Greek letters chi and rho, the first two letters in the name of Christ. Above the sign were the words “Conquer by this.” That night, the strange sign appeared again. Constantine said that in his sleep, the Christ of God appeared to him and instructed him to use the sign as a standard in battle. GRAPHIC: OCTOBER 28, AD 312 The next morning, Constantine ordered his soldiers to mark the symbol on their shields, and under the sign of the cross, they headed for Rome. On the other side of the Tiber River, Maxentius sent his troops to meet Constantine, while he stayed behind in Rome. October 28th marked the sixth anniversary of the reign of Maxentius. To celebrate, he held a day of public games here at the Circus Maximus. But instead of cheering, the crowds turned on him. They shouted, “Constantine cannot be overcome!” So Maxentius fled to the Temple of Apollo. There he searched a collection of pagan prophecies known as the Sibylline books and found a passage that mentioned the date: October 28th. GRAPHIC: OCTOBER 28TH “ON THE SAME DAY THE ENEMY OF THE ROMANS SHOULD PERISH.” . . . “On the same day, the enemy of the Romans should perish.” Maxentius thought it prophesied the death of Constantine, so he changed his mind and went to join his troops. But by now, his army was trapped between Constantine and the Tiber River. The only way back into Rome was across the Milvian Bridge. And here Maxentius fell head first into the trap he had set for Constantine. Maxentius had cut all the bridges into Rome. But at the Milvian he had built a temporary wooden bridge designed to collapse under the weight of Constantine’s army. Instead, most of his own soldiers were trapped on the bridge. When it collapsed, many of them drowned, and the rest were taken prisoner. Maxentius himself drowned after jumping into the river. And the next day, Constantine’s army entered Rome, parading his head on the point of a spear. Today, Constantine is known as the first Christian emperor. But was it a real conversion or just a smart political move? Paul L. Maier, PHD: There may have been political benefits for Constantine to do that. I’ve never understood why he must be only a totally sincere Christian convert or only a calculating politician. There could have been a little of both involved. GORDON ROBERTSON: As emperor, Constantine remained the head of Rome’s pagan priesthood, and his coins bore the image of the Roman sun good, Sol Invictus. He also declared a national day of rest on the Roman day of the sun. Paul L. Maier, PHD: There is no question that Constantine was somewhat of a mixed Christian when it came to controlling the empire. He said, “Look, we’re in a transition period. Please understand that I am emperor of all of the Romans including the pagan Romans. So give me a little time, and we’ll phase these out. And he did. GORDON ROBERTSON: The true extent of Constantine’s conversion is debatable. But his influence on Christianity is undeniable. Within a year, he and his co-emperor issued an edict of toleration. They granted permission for all religions to worship freely and ordered the return of property seized from persecuted Christians. Paul L. Maier, PHD: This was a dramatic, dramatic move. When Constantine was converted, it was at a time when only ten percent of the Roman Empire was Christian. At the end of the 300s, 95 percent of Rome was Christian. GORDON ROBERTSON: Less than 400 years after the death of Christ, His followers had become the most influential religious group in Rome. And with this sign, Christianity had conquered the Roman Empire. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: It’s an amazing piece of history, and this is the anniversary we’re celebrating. You don’t think of Constantine very much, but Constantinople is a city named after him. And we’re beginning an operation in Turkey. Of course, it’s not called Istanbul, but nevertheless, that was the key place of the eastern Orthodox church, was Constantinople. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, I just came back from there. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I was thinking, as we’re seeing what God is doing in opening doors there, about the pastors—was it three years ago?—that were so violently murdered there. And you know what we say, that the blood of the martyrs is the seedbed of the church. And you see people hungry to know more about the Lord, people who say on the street—we did some interviews, “Do you know who Jesus is?” “No, I really don’t. I’ve never heard of Him.” One person who said, “I haven’t studied that, but I’d like to know more. I’m curious.” PAT ROBERTSON: Is that right? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Amazing. PAT ROBERTSON: In Turkey, curious. TERRY MEEUWSEN: In Turkey. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s supposed to be a secular country. The Islamic people were trying to take over, but I think it’s still a secular nation. And there is a great deal of freedom. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we prayed as we opened that new center there. It’s the only—I did not know this before going there—it’s the only country that sits on two continents. There it is, part of it in Europe, part of it in Asia. And so it’s quite an influential spot. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, what is really needed is that Europe would embrace Turkey, so it won’t get sucked into the orbit of the radical Middle East, but will come into the European fold. And I think, well, whatever it is. But we’re over there, ladies and gentlemen, because we have a real burden for Turkey and the people who live in that country. But today is the anniversary of the time when Constantine saw a vision in this sign, “You will conquer.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Amen. TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s wonderful. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, we’ll be back with more of The 700 Club, right after this. Stay tuned. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GRAPHIC: ROBOT A.I. The Washington, DC, city council is facing opposition to its plan to legalize same-sex marriage. Hearings are underway, and hundreds of people have signed up to speak out. Local pastors say the issue should be left to voters, but city leaders say it’s their decision to make and they will vote as needed. Still, same-sex marriage opponents are preparing to turn to the courts if city leaders deny their request for a ballot initiative. W&M TRANSGENDER QUEEN LEE WEBB: The new homecoming queen at the College of William and Mary in Virginia is a young man who considers himself transgender. Jesse Vasold was crowned last weekend at the school's homecoming football game. The Virginia Gazette reports that Vasold wants people to use “gender neutral” pronouns when referring to him. For example, the word “ze” instead of “he” or “she” and the word “zir” instead of “him” or “her.” And we’re not making this up. He is a member of the campus Organization for Homosexuals and Transgenders. He also helped bring the sex workers art show to the campus. William and Mary’s president says a transgender homecoming queen is just fine. You can always get the latest from CBN News by going to our web site at CBN.com. Countless more are living right on the edge. It’s a town filled with people waiting for someone to help, even if it means waiting all night. OPERATION TENNESSEE Rachell Chaffin: People will come and sleep in their cars the night before to make sure they have a ticket to get their food the next morning. GORDON ROBERTSON: Operation Blessing is here in Lebanon, Tennessee, distributing 150,000 pounds of food to 500 families. Over 100 CBN partners have volunteered to participate in the ministry firsthand. Bob Evans (Founder/Pres. Joseph’s Storehouse): And we share with them about the love of God and the power of the Word and hope and not to give up, that God does love them. And so they seem like they need that. A lot of them are so tired trying to live on 560 dollars a month, 640 dollars a month, and they can’t do it. There is no way to describe what Operation Blessing has meant to us. GORDON ROBERTSON: Operation Blessing partners with 5,200 other ministries just like Joseph’s Storehouse to help over three million people nationwide each month. Rachell Chaffin (Food Recipient): Trying to feed my family is hard. My husband got hit by a drunk driver three years ago. I’ve got to take care of my kids. I’ve got to help take care of my mama. GORDON ROBERTSON: Unemployment is up over 61 percent in Wilson County in just the past year, and these people are overwhelmed with the amount of food they are receiving. Woman: It means a lot, because I have a child that’s getting ready to have a newborn baby. So it means a lot to me, and I appreciate you very much. Renee Williams (Food Recipient): It helps you through the end of the month. You get meat. You get juice. You get sodas. You get toiletries, like toilet paper. They give you a lot. They really give you a lot, and it is a blessing. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: One of the attributes that Americans are known for is caring about others. We probably send more aid to the rest of the world than any other nation. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM But we need now to stand with each other. And what an opportunity we have to do that through Operation Blessing. We want to ask you to be a part of reaching out to communities like this all around the country who are really feeling the pinch right now economically. We can make a huge difference when we stand together. And when people are desperate, it means a lot to know that someone else, that someone else is going to come and stand with you, make a difference in your need. When you join The 700 Club, you allow us to do that, so we’re asking you right now, in the midst of this financial challenge that we’re in as a nation, will you go to your phone and join The 700 Club? Help us be there for people as they stand in desperate circumstances. Our number is toll free. It’s 1-800-759-0700. And to become a 700 Club member is 65 cents a day, 20 dollars a month. And that may not seem like a lot to you, but when we all link arms together, we become an army of people reaching out with the love of Christ to those who simply need a hug and a hand up. So help us to do that right now. You can also give by going to CBN.com. But we want to say thank you by sending you the latest. This is Pat’s new CD teaching, Right on the Money. GRAPHIC: YOURS WHEN YOU JOIN 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM It’s excerpts from his book of the same title. And we believe that in this financial crisis, this will help you to stay on track and to move forward in your own finances, so Right on the Money is yours when you help us reach out and touch others. Great opportunity. PAT ROBERTSON: You wouldn’t think that Lebanon, Tennessee, right out of Nashville, would have almost 60 percent unemployment and desperate poverty. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Sixty percent. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s what he said. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, I know. It’s amazing. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. You think, “Hey, it’s Music City, USA. They’ve got all kinds of country singers and prosperity.” But it’s not true. But if we can help, man, we want to help. We want to help people. And if they’re hurting, we can reach out a hand in the name of Jesus and bring them through a difficult period until such time as they’re able to find work and the economy recovers, and it will recover. Well, still ahead, we’re going to Bring It On with your e-mail. Monica says, “My husband lies to people. When I confront him, he says it’s part of doing business. I think he’s lying to me. I have the privilege of traveling around the world, seeing the life changing things CBN partners make possible. On a recent trip to South Africa, I saw firsthand the incredible difference you’re making in orphans’ lives. Here at home and across the nations, you are bringing the help people so desperately need, just like you did for Halima. Every day she had to walk more than a mile getting stuck by swarms of wasps in order to get water from a polluted swamp. You brought a clean water well to her village, ending her pain, sickness and fear. Your monthly gift makes it possible to heal the sick, feed the hungry, preach the Gospel and so much more. Please watch for this mailing and send in your pledge. Imagine lifting a life out of despair and filling it with hope. That’s what you do every day as CBN partners, and it only happens because you were there. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Spelman College is known as the country’s oldest college for African American women, and these days it’s becoming famous for something else, thanks to Dr. Andrew Williams. SET-UP PIECE SHAWN BROWN: You could probably call Dr. Andrew Williams an international soccer coach, except his players don’t get paid to play, and they’re all under three feet tall. These robotic humanoids compete in Robo Cup soccer competitions around the world and are programmed to do all the things a human has to do in order to play soccer. Dr. Andrew created the robots with the help of his team, “Spelbots,” the first all female, all black and all undergraduate team to qualify for a Robo Cup competition. In his new book, Out of the Box, Dr. Andrew shares why creating artificial intelligence is not just about soccer, but about so much more. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: ANDREW WILLIAMS, PHD TERRY MEEUWSEN: Please welcome to The 700 Club the coach of the Spelbots, Dr. Andrew Williams. It’s great to have you here. Dr. Andrew Williams: Thank you. It’s great being on the show. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I’m going to say right away that these robots are not controlled by remote control. They actually see the ball and respond to it. How do you create artificial intelligence? Dr. Andrew Williams: So it’s a research project that universities worldwide are working on, but it involves things that involve math, algorithms, to segment images and make decisions. And so there is a lot of research going on in artificial intelligence. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Over the years, we’ve been told for a quite a while now that robots will one day be able to actually creatively help us in things like housekeeping issues and some of the various things that need to be done in our everyday lives. How far away are we from that actually coming to pass? Dr. Andrew Williams: Yes, I grew up watching things like The Jetsons, where they had the robot, or Lost in Space. And we actually have things like that. There’s the Roomba that helps clean houses. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, the little vacuum cleaner. Dr. Andrew Williams: But also, robots are used to help perform surgeries on people. And things are being put into cars that are robotic in nature. TERRY MEEUWSEN: You have such an interesting background. Your book is called Out of the Box, and you have to read the book to get the full impact of that title. But talk a little bit about your growing up years. Dr. Andrew Williams: So I grew up in Junction City, Kansas. It was an Army town, and I’m the youngest of six kids. My dad was African American. My mom was Korean. And I literally slept in a cardboard box in a two bedroom trailer. There were so many of us and not enough room. And there were a lot of drugs, prostitution. We experienced poverty. But God really helped us overcome a lot through this small predominantly white church that really took us in and shared Jesus with us. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. That’s the whole implication in your title, that you as a baby was put in a cardboard box. You lived in a trailer. But you had the ability to rise to become what you were willing to put effort and intent into. How did you get interested in robotics? Dr. Andrew Williams: Like I said, when watching some of the shows as a kid that had robots, I was interested in that. But I was interested in artificial intelligence, just studying things in nature and how we can replicate those in computers and robots. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, I know that with the background that you have and your fascination with all of this you could be teaching right now at some of the top Ivy League schools in the country. Tell us about how you wound up at the school that you’re at and why you made that decision. Dr. Andrew Williams: So I used to be a professor, an engineering professor at University of Iowa. My wife and I, Anitra, read the book The Purpose Driven Life, and part of God’s given purpose for me, I decided was to help young African Americans reach their full potential academically and spiritually. And so we moved to Atlanta, Georgia and Spelman College. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Now, one of the stereotypes, Andrew, would be that women are not as strong in math and science as men are. What would you say to that? Dr. Andrew Williams: Well, that’s another part of the book title, Out of the Box. Sometimes people try to put us in a box of low expectations or we put ourselves in a box of fear of failure. And what we’ve shown with the Spelbots is that we can compete on the international level with graduate schools, even being an undergraduate college. TERRY MEEUWSEN: When you went to Spelman, did you have trouble finding women who said, “Sign me up for this. I want to be part of the team.” Dr. Andrew Williams: Actually, it wasn’t as much of a challenge as I thought it would be. The students there are very inquisitive. The students that we have now, Jazmine Miller and Jonecia Keels are the co-captains, and they’re very bright and really love technology. And we’re trying to let people know that girls and young women can do science and computer science just as good as boys and young men can. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, he looks fascinating. Can you show us how he works. Dr. Andrew Williams: Sure. I’ll show you a dance that Jazmine and Necie came up with. And as soon as it starts up, and the music can start now. [robot dancing] TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amazing. That was all computer driven? Dr. Andrew Williams: They programmed the robot using a motion editor to control the joints and the motors in a very precise choreographed manner. And we do this with soccer, but we have to add the computer vision and the AI to it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow. How long does it take to do something like what these two young women did? Dr. Andrew Williams: Well, these ladies are sharp. So it would take them about one day to do something like that. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Tell me about where all of this is going, Andrew. Why is this so significant and what do the accomplishments of the women that are part of this robotics team have to do with our society and advancement? Dr. Andrew Williams: Yes, so to compete in the global economy, our students, whether they’re African American or women, around the country need to be educated in these types of fields in order for the companies to have people that can do these kinds of high tech jobs. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s amazing, really, how they can make these motions seem so real. Nothing on Michael Jackson there. That’s great. Well, what you’re doing I think is fascinating. And if you’d like to know more about Andrew Williams and his Spelbots—by the way, hats off to Spelman College for the work that they’re doing on this—you want to check out his book. It’s called Out of the Box, building robots, transforming lives. But it’s about so much more than that. It’s very inspiring, and I think might encourage you to get out of any box you find yourself in. You can pick up a copy in bookstores nationwide or go to CBN.com to find out there. Andrew, thank you so much for being with us. Dr. Andrew Williams: Thank you so much for having me. TERRY MEEUWSEN: What a great work you’re doing. Dr. Andrew Williams: It’s been a pleasure. Thank you. TERRY MEEUWSEN: How fun. Wonderful. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Terry, the time is coming. Robots will be replacing you and me. They’ll be doing television. It will be so much easier. Well, coming up, it’s time to answer your e-mails. Amy writes, quote, “Jesus taught His followers to turn the other cheek. But if an intruder is threatening my family, is it wrong to defend them?” PAT ROBERTSON: We’ll Bring It On with that question and more, right after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 6: HUMANA Spokesman: If you have Medicare, I have three things you’ll want to hear. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BRING IT ON PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome back. We’ve got a great audience with us right now, the area directors from WorldReach. They’ve come from all over the world. What is it, 35 different countries? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thirty-five different nations we have WorldReach offices. And we’ve got lots of people representing them today. And these are folks who really are involved in CBN’s work in the nations of the earth. And we are very excited about what God is doing. PAT ROBERTSON: It’s the key we’ve done. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amen. PAT ROBERTSON: So we’re glad to see all of them. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Welcome, everybody. PAT ROBERTSON: Give yourselves a hand. We thank you for being with us. God bless you. Wonderful people. Okay. TERRY MEEUWSEN: We’ve got some e-mail questions. Are you ready? PAT ROBERTSON: Let us Bring It On. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay. This is Monica, who says, “Pat, I have overheard my husband lie and deceive people, especially when it’s to his benefit. When I confront him, he either denies it or tells me it’s just part of, quote, ‘doing business.’ I know he’s lied to me and about me. Can his habit of lying affect our blessings from God?” PAT ROBERTSON: I tell you what it will do. You read Revelation. Get over there in the 20th, 21st chapters. And it says, “Outside are all liars.” They’re not going to Heaven. Will it not only affect your blessing, it’s going to mean he’s going to Hell. And that’s not a pleasant situation. Look at the book of Revelation, get that point about who is outside: the dogs, the fornicators, and whoever loves and makes a lie. And let him read it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Sometimes I think it becomes such a bad habit, you don’t even realize that you’re doing it. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, yes, but I know that people . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: It is what it is. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Maybe they learning lying when they were kids. But I might say to parents, whatever you do, don’t always be on your child’s case. “Well, why did you do that? What have you got here? Where did you go?” If you do that, you’re going to make liars out of them. They will get very adroit. “Well, I went to the candy store,” when they went to the movie. Whatever. They will lie to you, because they just want you off their back. So don’t force your children to lie. Okay. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is Amy, who says, “Pat, Jesus taught His followers to turn the other cheek. But if an intruder or an attacker is threatening your family, is it all right to defend them or yourself with physical force? My husband would protect us with his life if necessary, but would that be a sin?” PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t think so. I think we’ve always recognized that self defense is a defense or is a cause for some types of violence against others. If somebody is trying to kill you, you have a perfect right to defend yourself. And the whole concept of turn the other cheek is that in most situations where somebody is doing evil to you, you can turn the other the cheek and avoid evil, because instead of—violence will escalate. So if somebody strikes you, you strike back, then they will strike back harder, then you strike back harder. The next thing you know, what started like an innocent argument winds up in homicide. So I think what Jesus said is the correct answer, but again, if somebody is coming to kill you or your family, you have every reason to defend yourself and protect the innocent. Remember, when Michael Dukakis got in all kinds of trouble. Somebody asked him, “If you saw somebody getting ready to murder your sister, or whatever, your wife, what would you do?” He waffled on that one, and it cost him the election. What do you have? TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Richard, who says, “Satan was an angel of God. He chose evil, and so God cast him out of Heaven. When we get to Heaven, will we also have to choose between good and evil?” PAT ROBERTSON: Thank the Lord, when you get to Heaven, you have already chosen, and you don’t have to have another choice. You’ve made the choice. And so the choice now is do you choose Jesus? Do you choose to follow Him and obey God? That’s what the choice is. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Sharon, who says, “Pat, many religions believe in reincarnation. I tend not to agree. Does the Bible talk about it?” PAT ROBERTSON: No, it certainly doesn’t. Reincarnation is a Hindu concept. It is not biblical. It is not in the Bible at all. Jesus talked about a rich man and a beggar. And one died, and he was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The other died and he woke up in Hell. And the one in hell saw the beggar, and he said, “Send him to dip the finger in water, because I’m tormented by this flame.” But the thing of it is, he had his self identity. He recognized the poor man. Abraham recognized them both. They talked to each other. So there was nothing in there about becoming a dung beetle or rain or anything like that. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it does say it’s appointed man once to die. PAT ROBERTSON: Once to die, and after that the judgment. But the idea of this is that you have a karma, and you keep going around the wheel until you change the karma. But it’s not biblical. It just is not. It’s appointed unto man once to die, after that the judgment. We leave you today with these words from II Corinthians 1:20 . . . . GRAPHIC: II Corinthians 1:20 “For all the purposes of God in Him are yes, and in Him, amen.” (NKJV) . . . . “For all the purposes of God in Him are yes, and in Him, amen.” That’s all the time we’ve got. Thanks for being with us. We will see you tomorrow on Skinny Wednesday.
