UnderWing Transcripts PO Box 16282 Clearwater, Florida 33766 540 455-2333 / UnderWing@underwingtranscripts.com ________________________________________ The 700 Club Telethon Broadcast Tuesday, October 6, 2009 GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. Government prosecutors say terrorists were planning to strike America again this year. And they were going to do it on September 11th. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Our intelligence agencies were able to stop the plot before it was carried out. Here is reporter John Jessup. PLOT JOHN JESSUP: This derailed passenger train in Rhode Island is designed to look like the scene of terror attack, but it's only a drill. Law enforcement and emergency responders around the country train how to react in the event something like this really happens. They're also working to keep would-be attacks from getting off the ground in the first place. They were able to do that in the case of Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old Afghan immigrant, accused of plotting an attack on New York this year on the eighth anniversary of 9/11. Prosecutors say he was planning to set off homemade bombs made out of hydrogen peroxide he bought in bulk at a Denver-area beauty supply store. But the US learned of Zazi's plot through a CIA source. Janet Napolitano: The recent case here by way of example gives us all information to share and has been now shared through a product from DHS about the over purchase of certain products that can be used in explosive making. JOHN JESSUP: That information filtered through state and local agencies through 72 nationwide fusion centers which collect and share information about potential terrorist activity. The nation's top law enforcement officer told a conference of police chiefs that coordinated effort helped to stop Zazi and prevent scores of people from dying. Police say the next step is to build a public partnership with ordinary citizens reporting anything they see that seems suspicious or unusual. William Bratton: An alert community can act as a deterrent to terrorism. And an educated and trained public can feel more in control of their own lives if they partner with law enforcement to fight against terrorism. JOHN JESSUP: John Jessup, CBN News, Washington. GORDON ROBERTSON: Just another reminder that there are enemies out there that want to attack our country and want to bring chaos to our streets and inflict terror on us as a civilian population. Why they believe this is still a mystery to me and why you think that somehow or other you’re going to get favor with God by blowing up innocent civilians, I don’t understand that. I don’t understand that as a religious way of thinking. I don’t understand that as a philosophy of life. But we as Christians, we need to be in prayer, and we need to be praying for the protection of our country and for wisdom in our leadership. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. CHURCH CASE LEE WEBB: Gordon, the US Supreme Court will not get involved in a church property case that pits a breakaway Episcopal Church against it’s former denomination. St. James Anglican Church in Newport Beach, California, split from the national church after the 2003 consecration of the first openly homosexual bishop. California courts had ruled the congregation could not keep the parish property even though it’s held the deed to that church for decades. St. James is continuing its property trial in an Orange County court and may appeal to the US Supreme Court again. OB LEE WEBB: Manila is still cleaning up after last week’s massive typhoon. In the Filipino countryside, rescue efforts are much more difficult. But Operation Blessing is helping those whose lives have been shattered by this deadly storm. George Thomas has the story. GEORGE THOMAS: Take a three-hour road trip heading east from Manila and eventually you'll see it: the lush and scenic Sierra Madre mountain range that runs across much of these parts. It's a popular tourist destination, but at the foothills of the mountain, a very different picture is emerging, one of heartache and shattered lives. Arlene Robino: I feel like this is the end of my life. GEORGE THOMAS: Arlene Robino is taking us to what’s left of her home and village. She usually makes the trip on foot or by car, but today she makes it by boat. And getting there, well, it is not the easiest thing in the world. It takes several people to get the boat through all the marsh and debris. Arlene Robino: That's all that's left of my house. There is no floor, just the shell of the house. GEORGE THOMAS: On September 26, Typhoon Ketsana's rains poured into the Sierra Madre, turning Robino's village and countless other areas into a swampy mess and leaving the people here in desperate need. Arlene Robino: I've been praying everyday, “Please somebody come and help us.” GEORGE THOMAS: Her prayers were answered Monday when an army of volunteers from Operation Blessing Philippines and Christians from area churches joined hands to deliver the much needed food, water, clothes and medical supplies to Robino's village. Arlene Robino: You are all an answer to my prayers GEORGE THOMAS: And Robino is just one of nearly a hundred thousand people that Operation Blessing has helped since Typhoon Ketsana hit. Responding to a major disaster like this one here in the Philippines takes partnership, and that is what Operation Blessing is so good at. Today at this particular relief effort, nine different denominations have come together to help meet the needs of several thousand in this community. Omega Clyoro: And we need to thank the Lord for Operation Blessing, really that they see this cooperation that we have right now is really important, very important. GEORGE THOMAS: More than just handing out food or meeting the medical needs of the people, it's about touching lives deep down. Sheila Aranas: Most importantly, we need to address their spiritual and emotional needs as well. GEORGE THOMAS: For Arlene Robino and countless others, today was about lifting the Filipino spirit. Tomorrow will bring new challenges, but also new hope that there are friends around the world who care enough to give. Arlene Robino: Operation Blessing gives me the fighting spirit to keep going. GEORGE THOMAS: George Thomas, CBN News, at the foothills of the Sierra Madre in the Philippines. LEE WEBB: And Gordon, you could tell a difference in her countenance, couldn’t you? GORDON ROBERTSON: Yes. It’s amazing what happens when people gather together, join together, to bring aid to those in need. Just the mere fact that you care, and you show you care, being very tangible in the goods that you deliver. What were the greatest needs? Food, water, clothing. We’re helping with clean up. We’re also bringing medical care, because in any kind of flood situation like this you’ve got to start worrying about cholera and other waterborne diseases. But we’re there, and we’re there in your name, because if you’re a member of The 700 Club, you’re part of that relief effort. A portion of every gift to The 700 Club goes into the work of Operation Blessing to bring help to people around the world. Another portion goes into the work of CBN WorldReach to preach the Gospel around the world. And Manila is one of our pioneering WorldReach centers. If you want to be a part of it, all you have to do is call us: 1-800-759-0700. And just say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club. How much is that? Well, it’s only 20 dollars a month. That’s just 65 cents a day, and you join with tens of thousands of other people who love to give and are inspired by giving. If I can get a drum roll, I’ve got some great news, because we’ve got some partners from Maryland and another group from Rhode Island. And they’re joining together, and they say they want to challenge you 125,000 dollars. What a challenge means is existing CBN partners, existing members of The 700 Club or The 1000 Club or The Founders Club, they say, “We like giving to CBN so much, we enjoy the blessings so much, we want to challenge others to give.” And what that means is they will match you dollar for dollar up to 125,000 dollars for the next 30 minutes. Let’s pray. “Lord God, for the partners who made it possible to issue this challenge, Lord, we just know that your word over them will be true and that you will open windows in Heaven and pour out blessings they cannot contain. And for those watching right now, we just ask that you would speak to them. Encourage them to help others in need, for we ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amen. GORDON ROBERTSON: You heard it, 125,000 dollars. We’ve got 30 minutes. The clock is already ticking, 29 minutes and 53 seconds. What we’re asking for is that you join The 700 Club. We need to respond to these disasters. There are current medical teams on the ground in Indonesia responding to that earthquake. There are teams on the ground outside of Atlanta and Chattanooga helping people clean up, and teams right here in Norfolk, Virginia, helping the flood victims. We want to preach the Gospel tangibly by showing love and compassion to people in need. And if that’s you, if you want to be a part of that, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Well, Dexter and Cynthia Brown spent years fighting about their bills instead of paying them. Their bickering led to bankruptcy, and they were just one day away from losing their home. That’s when Dexter and Cynthia decided to call a truce. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DEXTER AND CYNTHIA BROWN Dexter Brown: The way that I was raised, the wife would take care of the bills. The husband would go out and make the money. Cynthia Brown: I thought that the husband made sure the bills get paid and made sure the family is well taken care of. TIM BRANSON: Neither Cynthia nor Dexter Brown’s expectations were met. No one made a household budget or monitored the spending, and no one kept up with the bills. Dexter Brown: The utility bills, the regular bills, we would put that on the back burner and spend the money on the things that we wanted. Cynthia Brown: I couldn’t understand how he could be a budget analyst and handle so much money throughout a day, and then come home and everything was a mess. TIM BRANSON: Including the Brown’s marriage. Dexter Brown: I started blaming my wife. My wife started blaming me. Cynthia Brown: Me, as a woman, I need to know, I need to feel safe; and I didn’t feel safe. TIM BRANSON: That’s because Cynthia and Dexter were 15,000 dollars in debt. Their electricity and cable were cut off and all four of their cars were repossessed. When the Browns faced foreclosure on their home, they filed for bankruptcy. Then things got worse. The couple received a second foreclosure notice that said if they did not pay 2,000 dollars immediately, they would be evicted from their home. Cynthia turned to God. Cynthia Brown: I told Him, I said, “If you’ll help me to get back on track, I’m going to do the right thing.” TIM BRANSON: And just one day before they were to be evicted, the Browns sold a van they had received as a gift for, you guessed it, 2,000 dollars. So they didn’t have to leave their home. Now it was time to make good on that promise to God. Dexter Brown: I had to swallow my pride and ask for help. TIM BRANSON: A friend from church helped them sort through their finances and make a budget. But their real breakthrough came when they decided to make tithing their first priority. Then Cynthia added something else to the list. Cynthia Brown: I just knew that I was supposed to give to The 700 Club, and I knew God was tugging on my heart to give. TIM BRANSON: So Cynthia made the call and pledged her support to CBN. And as she continued to watch The 700 Club, Dexter noticed something different about his wife. Dexter Brown: Her spirit changed. She was a nicer person, a kinder person, and I wanted what she had, so I started watching, as well. And every time I watched CBN, it blessed me. So I said, “Well, maybe we should give more.” So we agreed to increase our giving, and now we don’t even miss it. TIM BRANSON: It’s been over seven years since the Browns started budgeting and putting biblical principles to work in their lives. As a result, they’ve paid off every last penny of their 15,000 dollar debt, and they’ve worked out the kinks in their marriage. Cynthia Brown: I’m the bill payer. I’m the one that makes sure all the bills get paid. I make sure I keep up with the checkbook. Dexter Brown: Me, on the other hand, I look to do the investing part, the savings and the negotiating the real estate deals and that type of thing. TIM BRANSON: Real estate deals? That’s right. Dexter and Cynthia now have two houses and are getting ready to buy another. They have a savings account. Cynthia Brown: And just today I go to the mailbox, and there’s a check in the mail! And I mean from out of nowhere! It is like so amazing! TIM BRANSON: It’s a richer and fuller life than the Browns ever had before, and they say it started with two things: surrender and obedience. Cynthia Brown: Me and my husband, we had to start praying together. We had to start working together. We had to make sure we took care of what was important: the tithing, the offering, and The 700 Club. Dexter Brown: At first, I was just selfish. I thought I could manage it all on my own. But it wasn’t until I put God first that the blessings truly started to flow. Test God in this area. Give and God will, in return, give to you. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: Dexter and Cynthia learned the secret. Here it is from Isaiah 1. These are the words of God, “If you will only obey Me and let Me help you, then you will have plenty.” That’s the key. If you will just obey God and let Him help you, then you’ll have plenty. And they learned that. They went through bankruptcy. They were on the verge of losing their own home. But then they found the secret, that if we obey God, then we will have abundance. Well, Christian and Colleen Bunse had everything they wanted, and they bought it all on credit. They thought they could get by as long as they made the minimum payments. But in just a few years, the Bunses were thousands of dollars in debt. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CHRISTIAN AND COLLEEN BUNSE KEN HULME: A recent trip to the Cincinnati Zoo brought smiles to the faces of Christian and Colleen Bunse and their four children. But a few years ago, things weren’t so pleasant at home. The Bunses had been struggling with their finances for years. They didn’t know how to do a budget. They routinely spent more than they earned, and they bought nearly everything on credit. Christian Bunse: I thought that if we used credit cards, and we could pay for things on credit cards, that we would be okay, that as long as I could buy something and we could make the minimum payments, that we’d be alright. KEN HULME: Christian has spent his entire career working in the packaged food business. He started out as a sales rep and eventually became a marketing executive, representing some of the biggest brands in the business. And spending money they didn’t have to impress those clients never seemed to be an issue. Christian Bunse: A lot of it was image. People came to my house that we entertained for my work. So I had this nice house that we couldn’t afford, and then we had to have nice furniture that we couldn’t afford. KEN HULME: At any given time during their marriage, the Bunses carried a lot of consumer debt, and that led to a lot of conflicts over money. Colleen Bunse: When the bills would come in, and they would be past due bills, or the phone calls would come into the house, I would automatically get upset with Christian. I would automatically get angry at him, thinking that it was his responsibility. KEN HULME: But in the months after they both prayed to receive Jesus as Savior, Christian and Colleen began to learn more about how to manage their finances and about giving. Christian Bunse: I realized watching The 700 Club that I couldn’t out give God. KEN HULME: So Christian and Colleen decided to make a pledge to CBN. A few months later Christian was watching the program. Christian Bunse: It was during telethon, and I just knew that I needed to give 10,000 dollars. KEN HULME: Keep in mind that the Bunses still had more than 20,000 dollars in credit card, debt, plus they had an unpaid student loan from a Masters degree that Christian had just finished. But they made the pledge anyway. Within two months of making that decision, Christian got a 2,500 dollar bonus at work. He and Colleen agreed to send it off to CBN. A few months after that, Christian received another check from work, dividends from some stock that his company had given to him. The check was for 80,000 dollars which allowed them to pay off all of their debts. Christian Bunse: I didn’t realize the power of our obedience. And all of a sudden this test, that we took a step of faith, it actually paid off. And so I was amazed at what God could do. KEN HULME: Since then, the Bunses have increased their giving to CBN and continue to look for ways to help others. Colleen Bunse: God has shown us that the most important thing is not the things that we acquire here on earth, but the treasures that we store up in Heaven. So we know that by giving to The 700 Club that that is a way for us to store treasures in Heaven. Christian Bunse: I would tell people to really step out in faith, to do something that you’ve maybe never done before. And test God in that area, and that every time you test God with your finances, He wins, and you win. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: He wins and you win. Here are the words from II Corinthians 9, “Remember this, a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop, for God loves the person who gives cheerfully. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” God loves a cheerful, generous giver. And let that be you today. Take an adventure in giving. Just see what God will do. It’s the only time in the Bible where we get to test Him. We get to test Him with our giving. So if you want to start that, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Just say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club.” How much is that? It’s just 20 dollars a month, 65 cents a day. Some of you say, “I can join at a higher level. I can join at 700 Club Gold.” That’s 40 dollars a month. There’s 1000 Club. That’s 1,000 dollars a year, 84 dollar or more a month. The 2500 Club, 2,500 a year. Founders, 5,000 dollars a year. And then Chairman’s Circle is 10,000 or more a year. At whatever level God is speaking to you to give, at whatever level you want to willingly, cheerfully, generously give, do it right now. Call us: 1-800-759-0700. Let’s go over to Kristi at the phones. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Hey, Gordon. Thank you so much. I was sitting here thinking, so many people are so scared, because when they turn on the television or go look at a newspaper, the way and the state of the economy today. But listen, there’s nothing to be scared of, because God is not a God of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. And that same love and that same sound mind that He calls us to have, He actually gives us scriptures on how and what we can do with our finances. And actually, Pat has taken a lot of those scriptures and placed them in this CD called Right on the Money. And it’s yours when you call in right now. So this is what Pat has to say about it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ENDORSEMENT PAT ROBERTSON: The world’s financial landscape is rapidly changing. Each of us needs to understand the new economy and how we can survive and thrive amid such sweeping change. So this is the time to call. And when you do, we’re going to give you this, Right on the Money. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: A recent poll says more than 50 percent of Americans don’t like their jobs. Well, not long ago, Vu Tran was one of them. But in just a few years, he went from scraping by on minimum wage to running his own business. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * VU AND REBA TRAN DORY NISSEN: Vu Tran has a lot to be thankful for. He has a beautiful family and owns a thriving aquarium business, and he often has more work than he can handle. Compare that with life a few years ago, and you get a pretty different picture. Vu Tran: I had a minimum wage job that was paying, but I was barely making ends meet, and it was kind of tough just living paycheck to paycheck. DORY NISSEN: Vu was a new Christian then and watched The 700 Club as much as possible. That’s where he heard a message on money. PAT ROBERTSON: As you plant seed, Jesus says if you give, it’ll be given unto you. Vu Tran: One of the key principles I learned from Pat was the law of reciprocity that he taught on how that if you give, God will give back unto you. There were certain months that I did struggle, and that really took a lot of faith to write that check out to CBN. But I was obedient to God and obedient to the principle of giving. DORY NISSEN: Vu began praying for a way to get out of his minimum wage job cleaning aquariums at a pet store. Vu Tran: During that time, there was a housing market boom, so people were putting in expensive aquariums in their houses. So on my days off, people would always ask me, “Vu, what are you doing? Come help clean my tank. Come help me set up my tank.” On my days off, I would be making more money than my days I worked. So figure that one out. DORY NISSEN: Vu started his own aquarium cleaning business, which was an instant moneymaker. Vu Tran: I don’t even advertise, and I have so much work that I couldn’t even handle, that I had to hire people to help me out. Because the Bible says that what you give, the Lord will bless you. And not only that, but He’ll cause men to heap unto your bosom. That’s people supporting what you do, supporting what you sell, and supporting your business. DORY NISSEN: Vu’s servicing business made so much profit, he was able to go into retail, as well, and opened a store. He also increased his giving to CBN and joined the 2500 Club. Vu Tran: As I started increasing my level of giving, I saw how God blessed my business. He opened up other doors. The more level of faith I took, I saw more results, how God had blessed and prospered. DORY NISSEN: Today Vu makes ten times more than he did when he worked his minimum wage job. Vu Tran: I encourage people to take that leap of faith, and write out that check, and bless God’s Kingdom. God will bless you back in ways that you can’t even imagine. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, here is what God says. It’s in Psalm 128, “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor. Blessings and prosperity will be yours. Thus is the man blessed who fears the Lord.” And Vu learned the secret. He went from a minimum wage job to owning his own business. God started giving him opportunity. God started giving him ideas, creative ways to come up with new engines of creating wealth. That can happen to you. God wants to bless you. All that’s required on your part is that you just be obedient to Him. Cooperate with Him. Cooperate with God and let the blessings flow into your life. What you’ve seen Him do for others He will do for you. Well, JoAnn Keith was out of work, behind on her bills and 20,000 dollars in debt. JoAnn was down to her last seven dollars. And here is how she used it to get back in the black. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * JOANN KEITH ANDREW KNOX: When JoAnn Keith’s employer downsized a few years ago, she lost her job and was unable to pay the mortgage on her new home. She was also carrying 20,000 dollars in credit card debt. JoAnn Keith: I thought I was doing everything that I was supposed to do as a Christian, but there were some areas in my life that God really had to show to me that were displeasing to Him. ANDREW KNOX: One of those areas was JoAnn’s finances. She’d been reluctant to fully tithe ten percent of her income. She was afraid there wouldn’t be enough money to pay all the bills. At the end of the month, she was still struggling to make ends meet. JoAnn Keith: I had always had great salaries, but I never could get ahead. For some reason, always something would break, or I got behind in a payment, but I never could really just have a great savings. ANDREW KNOX: For weeks, she interviewed for dozens of jobs. She was nearing the end of her severance pay when a friend told her about the biblical principles of giving. JoAnn decided that her checkbook, with a sobering balance of seven dollars, was telling her that something had to change. JoAnn Keith: Because I had no choice, because I knew that if I didn’t, things weren’t going to change and that I might lose my house. ANDREW KNOX: So JoAnn wrote a check to her church, giving away her last seven dollars. JoAnn Keith: Finally, when I decided to surrender everything to God, I knew He was going to be responsible for the consequences. He was going to take care of me, and He did. In two weeks, I had a job with a major pharmaceutical company. TIM BRANSON: JoAnn was still facing a 20,000-dollar credit card debt, but she found that by obeying God’s financial principles, tithing ten percent of her income, she was able to pay off that debt in a short amount of time. In addition, she became a CBN partner. And because she was receiving bonuses at work, JoAnn began to tackle her mortgage. JoAnn Keith: It seemed like the more that I gave, the bigger the bonuses came. I’m not good in math. I’m not good in accounting, but when you trust God with your finances, He works it all out. And because of that, I was able to pay off my house in two years, and that’s such a blessing. And I know a lot of people can’t do that. A lot of people are suffering right now with gas prices the way they are, and people are really hurting. And the message that I would love to share is that you don’t have to do this by yourself. You’ve got help, and God is there to help. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON TEACHES GORDON ROBERTSON: And He will help if you’ll just let Him. Here is what the Bible says from Matthew 25, “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. Take an adventure in giving. Make that phone call right now: 1-800-759-0700. Just say, “Yes, I want to cooperate with God. I want to do it His way. I want to do finances God’s way.” When you do that, then you can count on His favor, and you can count on His blessing. So call us: 1-800-759-0700. What we’re asking you to do is join The 700 Club. It’s just 20 dollars a month, 65 cents a day, and you join with so many people that want to make a difference in the world today, that want to see the Gospel preached around the world, that want to see when disasters strike, they want to strike back with love and compassion. They want to bring help to people in need. If that’s you, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. We’re in the middle of a 125,000 dollar challenge. If we can get the red number up, we’ve got 81,000 to go with just ten minutes. And we’re going to take that number down, because in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a Founder wants to join via Pledge Express, 6,000 dollars. So please, if you like what we’re doing around the world, we can’t do it without you, so we really need you to go to the phones right now and call. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, God is inviting us to change the world. And I want to show you how your gifts helped a young mother in China. When Cai Yun found out she was pregnant, she was overjoyed, but she was also very afraid, and you’re about to see why. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * XU RAN’S CLEFT LIP TIM BRANSON: The closer Cai Yun got to her baby’s due date, the more worried she became. Cai Yun: I was afraid that my baby would be born with a cleft lip, like I was. I have heard that it can passed down in the genes. TIM BRANSON: Cai Yun has since had surgery, but she remembers the years of pain her cleft lip and palate caused her. Cai Yun: People used to always stare at me. All the criticism and the looks made me feel queasy inside. TIM BRANSON: So she decided to do everything she could to prevent the same thing from happening to her child. Cai Yun: I put all my faith into Kuan Yin. I prayed to this idol and asked that she would keep my baby from having a cleft lip. TIM BRANSON: But Cai Yun’s baby was born with a cleft lip, and she and her husband Jin couldn’t afford surgery. Jin Hu works in construction and makes very little money. Still, he was willing to do anything to help Xu Ran. Jin Hu: I told my friends that I would sell all my possessions in hopes that we could get surgery for our baby girl. TIM BRANSON: As hard as the couple tried, they couldn’t sell or save enough. It looked like Xu Ran would be ridiculed for life. Cai Yun: I felt so guilty about my baby and her cleft lip. TIM BRANSON: Then a friend told the Hus about CBN, and CBN provided free surgery for Xu Ran. Cai Yun: I could not have been any happier. The moment my baby came out of surgery, I couldn’t help but cry, because my baby’s cleft lip had been fixed. And she looked much, much better than ever. Jin Hu: I’m so grateful to CBN for how boundless your love is. It inspires people to help the poor. Cai Yun: I want to thank you. When I look back, I realize that idol worship did not do me any good. It is not real. But CBN’s help is. What a difference you have made in my daughter’s life. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Making a difference is what CBN partners specialize in. And we’re doing that all around the world. People have such great needs. This little couple could never have corrected the face of their child. Because of gifts from people like you, she now has a smile. She has hope, a future. You’ve touched this whole family. And people around them have watched as this has all been done in the name of the Lord. Will you come alongside of us and make this kind of difference around the world? You can do it with 65 cents a day, 20 dollars a month. That makes you a 700 Club member. But there are lots of club levels you can join at. We’re asking you today to ask God what He would have you do. Be a part of an army of people who are out to change their world. There are the different club levels you can look at: 700 Club I mentioned. The 700 Club Gold is a gift of 40 dollars a month. We have 1000 Club members, the 2500 Club level, Founders. We even have something called The Chairman’s Circle with people who give gifts of 10,000 dollars or more. And when you call to make your pledge, to give your gift, will you do it through something called Pledge Express? It’s electronic monthly giving. It means your bank does all the work. It saves you all of the hassle. But it also saves us a lot of administrative costs and allows us to put even more of your gift right into touching lives like the family you just saw. So call now: 1-800-759-0700. We’re in the midst of a big challenge. That means when you call right now, every dollar you pledge gets matched dollar for dollar. So you can’t find an investment like that anywhere in the world today. We need to hear from you. You can also, by the way, log on to CBN.com. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: We need to stop the clock, get a drum roll. Partners from Louisiana are saying 125,000 is not enough. They want to add another 50,000 to the challenge and take it to 175,000. And we get to the end of the hour. Let’s pray. “Lord, for the partners in Louisiana who made it possible to issue this challenge, Lord, just bless them. Bless them abundantly above all they could ask or think. And for those watching, making decisions, just speak to them. Comfort them, for we ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.” You heard it, 175,000 dollars, 22 minutes to go. We need to hear from you, so go to the phone and call: 1-800-759-0700. Just say, “I want to join The 700 Club.” How much is that? Twenty dollars a month, 65 cents a day, and you help people around the world. Well, Monty Williams was an NBA first rounder. But his career didn’t take off right away. Then Monty found a way to improve his game by taking advice from his wife. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * MONTY WILLIAMS ANDREW KNOX: Portland Trailblazers’ assistant coach Monty Williams is a great mentor for young NBA players. He spent nearly a decade playing in the league. The 6’8” small forward was forced into retirement due to chronic knee problems and has been able to stay in the game he loves serving as a coach. But not all of his life lessons were learned on the basketball court. Monty says one of the biggest lessons he learned was from his wife, Ingrid. Monty Williams: I would say, even before we were married in college, I watched her tithe. And I would just look at her like, “You got to be kidding me.” Ingrid Williams: My father was a preacher. He would always say, “You give ten percent. You take out ten percent.” So I would calculate. If I had 20 dollars, I would give two. If I made 50 dollars, I would give five. And it was just something that was ingrained in my brothers and I from the beginning. Monty Williams: What I saw in my wife changed my life. And I started to realize I was missing out on a huge blessing. ANDREW KNOX: At the time, Monty was struggling with his game. Monty Williams: My career was just up and down, a lot of talent, really not consistent. I’d have a few weeks of playing well, and then I’d have a half a season where I was just really non-existent. ANDREW KNOX: Monty decided it was time to make giving a priority in his own life, and the Bible served as his guide. Monty Williams: I just began to dig in the scriptures and really trust God with not only my career, but my finances, my marriage, my relationships, and things started to change. ANDREW KNOX: His career started turning a new direction. Monty Williams: When I started tithing, my career started to be more consistent. I began to find my niche in the league. And before I knew it, the respect level for my game had risen. Doc Rivers had already started to see me as a coach. And I was in my fifth year in the league, and he was like, “Mont, you’re going to be a coach someday.” Ingrid Williams: Spiritually, he’s grown. As a father, he’s grown. God has just redeemed time for him. ANDREW KNOX: As the giving grew, Monty wanted to make sure they were giving to an organization that would use the money wisely. Monty Williams: We’re supposed to sow on fertile ground. And I told my wife, I said, “We’re going to be partners with CBN, because look at what they’re doing.” They’re bringing people to know Christ, discipling people, hooking them up with churches. They’re in areas of the world that most people won’t even think about going to. They’re on the cutting edge, but still simple in their approach, that Jesus Christ is Lord and master of the universe. Ingrid Williams: CBN is doing some awesome stuff. They’re spreading the Gospel, most importantly. It’s all about being an extension of Christ here on earth for the lost. Monty Williams: The blessing that comes from tithing, the Bible says He gives exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could ask or think. ANDREW KNOX: Monty encourages others to give to CBN. Monty Williams: This ministry has been on TV for many, many decades now, and it’s like the proof is in the pudding. Just be a part of it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: And you can be a part of it. All you have to do is call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. We’ve got 18 minutes and a 175,000 dollar challenge. If we can get the red number up, there’s 64,000 to go. We want to go way over the top on this challenge, and we’re going to do it. Here we’re going to take the red number down. Bath, North Carolina, a Founder saying, “I’m in for this year,” 6,204 dollars. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Thank you. GORDON ROBERTSON: Let’s go over to Kristi at the phones. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Hey, Gordon, I have something really cool to share. It is called Right on the Money. This CD is dynamic. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, in one part of India, more than 300 people die every month from malaria. Not long ago, entire families were in danger of being wiped out until a medical team from Operation Blessing arrived in their village. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DASU AND BODRI TERRY MEEUWSEN: The Araku Valley lies in the eastern mountains of India. The landscape is beautiful, but inside the valley are hundreds of people who are quickly dying. Dasu, Bodri and their three children were among them. Their entire family was infected with cerebral malaria, a fatal disease that's carried by mosquitoes. Dasu and Bodri had few options. Until recently, there were no roads into their village, so they were cut off from the rest of the world. Bodri: The only person we could go to for help was a witch doctor, but we refused to go to him, because we believed in Jesus. We prayed with our pastor and believed God for a miracle. TERRY MEEUWSEN: That miracle came when a new road made it possible for vehicles to reach their village for the very first time. Operation Blessing came in and conducted a medical camp. Bodri: I heard about the medical camp and walked all the way through a dense forest with my kids. After we were diagnosed with cerebral malaria, the doctors wanted to go to our home and test my husband as well. So we rode back in the medical bus. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Dasu also tested positive for malaria. Each member of the family got a three-day course of medicine that saved their lives. Dasu: This is the first time doctors from outside have come to our village and our home. You came and found out about us, and then gave us medical treatment for free. I have never seen this act of kindness in my life. TERRY MEEUWSEN: On this medical mission, the team treated over 500 people with cerebral malaria. They also gave out mosquito nets and taught families how to prevent further outbreaks. Bodri: I was afraid, because we see people dying all the time. But by God’s grace, you gave us a blood test and medicines right away. I am really happy that you came to help us. Dasu: Our family would have died if you had not come here and treated us. We are grateful and thankful for your help. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: “This is the first time doctors have come to our village. I have never seen anything like this.” How did that happen? It happened because people like you cared enough to make it possible. This is nothing to sneeze at. You actually in the mission field contracted this yourself. And it’s deadly. GORDON ROBERTSON: Yes. My doctor told me I should have died. I got it in a refugee camp on the border of Burma and Thailand trying to take an English teacher into a refugee camp, and then I had a team of missionaries from the Philippines, to the Kareni tribe there. And Terry, I tell you, you talk about a bad disease, this is one that . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: I remember when we prayed for you, and it was serious. GORDON ROBERTSON: It was one of those where you’ve got to get your affairs in order and get right with God and make sure there is nothing on your conscience, that you’re ready to stand before Him. So I have a special heart for this. And if you want to see help brought to people in need, just imagine how remote that area was. But we were there, and we were there in your name, bringing help to people in tremendous need. If that’s you, if you want to be a part of helping people around the world, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Or you can log on to CBN.com. When you join via the Internet, you automatically sign up for Pledge Express, automatic monthly giving. And there are no stamps and checks, nothing to worry about. We save so much on the processing, we’re able to send as our gift back to you “Power for Life” monthly teaching CDs, so if you want it, ask for Pledge Express. Well, America’s unemployment rate is at a 25-year high. Many people around this country are struggling. Recently, I joined a team from Operation Blessing to help needy families in Tulsa, Oklahoma. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PARTNERS MINISTER IN OK GORDON ROBERTSON: CBN partners recently joined Operation Blessing to hand out food to families in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Woman: It’s great that ya’ll come out here and bless us with this food, because we’re struggling. GORDON ROBERTSON: But they did more than hand out food. They prayed for miracles. Woman: I just feel God is almost like He’s my Father. Are you feeling anything? What are you feeling? Woman: A tingling. Woman: A tingling? Woman: In my whole body. Woman: In your whole body? Father, I ask for more. GORDON ROBERTSON: Just release it right now. In the name of Jesus, we just join in with his prayer right now. Set him free. All right, now stand up. Can you stand up straight? Is that better? Man: A lot better. GORDON ROBERTSON: That’s a lot better. Man: A lot better. GORDON ROBERTSON: That would be good. This week, Operation Blessing is helping over 600 families right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But every single month, Operation Blessing helps three million people right here in America. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: The needs have never been greater here in America. The people you see in those lines, they had jobs just a few months ago. They’ve never been in that kind of situation, needing help. But we need to be there for them. We need to let them know that there are people that care, that care about them and want to help them through this time of need. If that’s you, if you want to be a part of this, all you have to do is call us. A portion of every gift to The 700 Club goes into the work of Operation Blessing to bring help to families right here in America. Three million people are being helped through our food distributions. Our goals are huge, to distribute a hundred million pounds of food right here in America. If you want to be a part of it, all you have to do is call us and say, “Yes, I want to join The 700 Club.” If I can get a drum roll, we’ve got some great news from Goldsborough, Pennsylvania, a Founder saying, “I want to renew through the Internet. I want to join Pledge Express,” 5,000 dollars. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Great! Thank you! GORDON ROBERTSON: All of that gets matched and doubled, because we’re in a 1750,000 dollar challenge. We’ve got nine minutes and 34 seconds to go. We need to hear from you, so give us a call. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, in South Africa, I met a remarkable little girl named Dineo. At just 13 years old, she’s responsible for her two younger sisters. These three children were alone in the world, until they found a home with CBN’s Orphan’s Promise. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DINEO AND HER SISTERS TERRY MEEUWSEN: When Dineo was just 13 years old, her parents died, leaving her to care for two younger sisters alone. Relatives helped when they could, but no one had the means to care for them full time. Dineo: Life was very difficult. Every morning I got my sisters ready for school. I was late at times. And when we returned, there was nothing to eat. I would have to cook for everybody. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The only thing they had was their small shack. But one night, they lost that, too. Dineo: We were fast asleep, and when we woke up the house was full of smoke. We crawled through a window to get out. Then we watched our house burn. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Then Hope in Christ Ministries found out the girls had no place to go. So Orphan’s Promise came alongside them and helped build this brand new dormitory. Dineo and her sisters were some of the first to move in. Dineo: Life was difficult, but when we moved here, life was good. We always have food. We can bathe. We can go to school, and we have clothes. I like living here. It’s like a big family, with parents and sisters, and I do respect them, because they love us. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Dineo is still something of a caregiver. She always makes sure that her sisters and friends have something to eat, and that they’re well cared for. Dineo: I love taking care of others. They’re like my sisters and brothers. I am very grateful for everything Orphan’s Promise has done for us. Thank you. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Life was very difficult. Thirteen years old, and she’s in charge of her younger siblings, no one to care for them. And then you allowed us to come into the middle of that need and build those homes, now filled with boys in one, girls in another, all children whose parents have died and who have no one to belong to. Thank you. Thank you if you’re a 700 Club member. You’re making that happen. If you’re not a 700 Club member, what a great time to join, because right now we’re in the middle of a pledge. And that means if you’ll call right now, every dollar that you pledge will be matched dollar for dollar up to 175,000 dollars. None of us can do this alone, but together we can make a huge difference worldwide, so we need to hear from you right now. When you call, will you please say that you’ll give your gift through Pledge Express? It means your bank does all the work. It’s electronic monthly giving, but it saves us a lot of administrative costs. And so we’re able to put even more of your gift directly into the lives of Dineo and her sisters and other children like them. We need you to call right now: 1-800-759-0700. If you’ve been watching the telethon this week and you’ve been saying, “Maybe I should give,” this is the time to do it. Gordon. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, today, Amelia runs a successful shop in her Indonesian village, but not long ago this widow was working three jobs just to keep her baby from starving. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SAVING BABY KEVIN KEN HULME: Ever since her husband died a year ago, Amelia has had to work three jobs to support her five children. On Monday and Tuesday, she sells shrimp in the marketplace. From Wednesday to Friday, she breaks rocks by hand for use in roads and construction. Then on the weekends, she drives a motor taxi. Amelia: Whatever I need to do, I will do to support my family. KEN HULME: But in spite of her efforts, Amelia’s one-year-old son Kevin was starving. Amelia: I really thought my son was going to die. KEN HULME: Amelia finally scraped some money together to take her son to a clinic. Amelia: The doctor at the clinic said my son was suffering from malnutrition. KEN HULME: These are the actual photos of Kevin when he arrived at that clinic. Woman: Kevin was very thin. He was a year old, but he weighed only 12 pounds. KEN HULME: That’s where Amelia learned about a free Operation Blessing medical clinic in Indonesia that had been set up to help malnourished children. At the clinic, Kevin received nutritious formula and his grandmother learned more about baby care and a healthy diet. After living there free of charge for five months with his grandmother, Operation Blessing brought Kevin home to see his mom. Amelia: My baby is healthy now, because Operation Blessing has taken such good care of him. KEN HULME: And Operation Blessing also provided a gift to Amelia, everything she needed to set up a convenience store at her home. Now instead of heading off to work to break stones, Amelia can stay home with her children. Amelia: Thank God. Thank you, Operation Blessing. You have made me so happy. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: And thank you. If you’re a member of The 700 Club, you’re part of that. If you’re not a member, call us right now: 1-800-759-0700. Now is the time to join. We’re asking you to join The 700 Club at just 20 dollars a month. Do it now. Call us. If I can get a drum roll, we’ve got some great news. Amherst, New York, a Founder going through Pledge Express, 5,604 dollars. We’re in the middle of a challenge. We need to hear from you. Call us right now. Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, 70 dollars doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but in Guatemala, it was enough to keep a three-year-old girl from losing her eyesight. Watch this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DAILIN’S EYE INFECTION ANDREW KNOX: From the time she was born until she was three, Dailin had suffered with a serious infection in her eyes. Dailin’s Father: I was worried, because we couldn’t find a way to cure her eyes, and we didn’t have enough money to buy expensive medicines for her. ANDREW KNOX: Dailin’s father is a farmer and sometimes can find jobs making three dollars a day doing manual labor. Dailin’s Mother: I was becoming so concerned, but I said that God was big enough to help us. ANDREW KNOX: So when Operation Blessing came to their community in Guatemala with a free medical clinic, Dailin’s parents brought her to see a doctor. The doctor was so concerned, he sent her to a specialist. Doctor: Dailin had a skin infection due to a bacteria that presented itself around her nose and eyes. ANDREW KNOX: The specialist immediately prescribed strong antibiotic drops for Dailin’s eyes. By the way, since the doctor gave Dailin her checkup free of charge and Operation Blessing bought the antibiotics, the price to save Dailin’s sight was just 70 US dollars. Dailin’s Father: I am grateful to Operation Blessing for the help they have provided by taking my daughter to a specialist and the medicine they had donated. We’ve seen my daughter’s relief, and thanks for Operation Blessing. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: How do you put a price tag on vision, eyesight? It may seem small, but the Bible says if you have the ability to do good, do it. So let’s do it. Let’s do it for the world. Let’s do it for those who are hurting, those who have need. Do it by joining The 700 Club. Call right now: 1-800-759-0700. We need to hear from you. We’re coming up on the end of this program, and we’ve got a great challenge. GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. We had a 175,000 dollar challenge. Against that, you gave—we went way over the top—219,420. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thank you! GORDON ROBERTSON: We leave you with these words from Psalm 41, “Blessed is he who considers the poor. The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.” God bless you. We’ll see you again tomorrow. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * END SPOT A: PAT ENDORSEMENT PAT ROBERTSON: The world’s financial landscape is rapidly changing.
