The Senate is at it, trying to pass its own version of health care reform. But the main question is, can they get the necessary senators to pass it? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, there are no Republicans supporting the bill, and many Democrats are objecting to it as well. Jennifer Wishon has the story from Washington. CARE JENNIFER WISHON: When Senator Max Baucus, chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, took the podium to announce his health care bill, he was alone. After months of negotiating with Republicans, not one stood beside him. Sen. Max Baucus ([D] Montana): I fully believe, as I've said many times, at the end of the day there's going to be Republican support for this bill. JENNIFER WISHON: But lack of Republican support isn't what has Senate leaders concerned. It's Democrats railing against the plan. Senator Jay Rockefeller says the Baucus plan would equal a, quote, “big, big tax on the middle class, including virtually every single coal miner in his state.” After that, President Obama met with him privately. Sen. Jay Rockefeller ([D] West Virginia): And I was alone with the President, and you don't breach that confidence. JENNIFER WISHON: Rockefeller calls a tax hike dangerous. Starting in 2013, the Baucus plan would impose a 35 percent excise tax on insurance companies for high cost plans. Congressional budget experts estimate that the proposal would reduce the number of uninsured by 29 million and trim the deficit by 49 billion over the next decade. But Democrat Ron Wyden says it doesn't pass the smell test. Sen. Ron Wyden ([D] Oregon): Under the draft proposals certainly some significant number of middle class folks could end up paying more. JENNIFER WISHON: Senate Democrats are holding a meeting today to let members air their concerns in hopes of reaching a consensus. Since the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, Democrats control 59 seats in the Senate. That means they'll still need at least one Republican to join them to pass a plan unless they use a procedural shortcut that lets them pass it with just 51 votes. Senator Olympia Snowe, the Republican most likely to back the plan, isn’t supporting it yet, but is still talking to Democrats. Other potential allies, Senator Susan Collins of Maine and Senator George Voinovich of Ohio, also have reservations. It's also unclear how or even if the Senate plan can be reconciled with legislation moving through the House. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Senator Baucus, but quickly added the House bill was more desirable. As much as President Obama needs lawmakers on board, he needs public support. After a health care rally at the University of Maryland on today, he'll take his push to the airwaves, appearing on all of the Sunday talk shows, except Fox News Sunday. And on Monday, an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Jennifer Wishon, CBN News, Washington. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Jennifer. Terry, the problem is none of us understand what’s in these plans. They say, “Well, this is the Baucus plan. This is the Pelosi plan. This is the White House plan.” Nobody really knows what’s there. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, and I think the other concern is that you get a sense that in the rush to come to some conclusion that not everybody on the hill knows what’s there or even what’s needed. PAT ROBERTSON: This is the problem, and this is why you can’t get a consensus is because people are saying, “Wait a minute. I don’t agree with that.” The idea of taxing the benefits, for example, of more generous health plans, that’s outrageous. How are you going to help people if you’re going to take money away from those that are already getting it? And you’re going to hit social security, take huge amounts of money out of that. And social security is already almost bankrupt. They’re not computing the effects of their actions. TERRY MEEUWSEN: They’re not computing, they’re competing. And you still get that sense, and it makes you unnerved. You think, why can’t we all cooperate together to come up with something that matters for everyone? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the best thing would be to say, “Okay, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board.” And I think Ron Wyden said it. He’s supposed to be a liberal, but he’s a pretty smart guy. And he said, “Let’s start at the center. Let’s start at the center and work out.” But they’re not doing that. And you hope and pray they won’t just say, “Well, I’ve got the vote for something,” and so people like Olympia Snowe and others say, “Well, we’ll vote regardless of whether we believe it.” Jay Rockefeller is holding steady. He’s got to. How is he going to have a hit like that on the coal miners of West Virginia? It’s terrible what they’re thinking about doing. Well, your Congress at work. You just pray that somehow they will go out of session, but I’m afraid they’re with us until December. And you can’t imagine how much damage they can do in that short period of time. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee, what do you have? FLORIDA PRAYER CASE LEE WEBB: Pat, a Florida school principal and an athletic director are facing criminal charges today for praying at a school-related event. They prayed at a fundraiser with private donors for the Pace High School athletic program near Pensacola. No students were present, but the men are accused of violating a federal court order banning school officials from leading prayers at school events. US Congressman Randy Forbes took to the floor of the House to bring attention to the case. He said it could lead to the criminalization of prayer in America. Rep. Randy Forbes ([R] Virginia): If you ever go down to Guantanamo Bay, there, our government actually helps facilitate and allows alleged terrorists, some of the meanest people in the world, to facilitate them in praying. We mark their cells. We allow calls to prayer to be pumped through their cells. I have no problem with that. But isn’t it a strange coincidence that we will allow terrorists to pray and the government will support that, but then here in the United States when we have a principal who simply asks for prayer and a blessing, we can’t do it. LEE WEBB: The two school leaders could face a 5,000 dollar fine, six months in prison and the loss of their retirement benefits. But, Pat, Christian protestors who are supporting these two men began showing up at that federal courthouse yesterday in Pensacola. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, there should be an overwhelming group of people. But, you see, what is this? This is one federal judge. This is his view of freedom of speech. He says, “You can’t pray.” Well, he doesn’t have the authority to do that, but he says, “I’m taking the authority, and furthermore, if you violate my order, you’re in contempt of court, and I can do bad things to you without much of a trial.” It’s terrible. And as Randy Forbes, Congressman Forbes, says so wisely, this could lead to the criminalization of prayer. We’re going to make it an offense. Terry, it’s horrible. It’s horrible to think that we’ve come to this point in America, where people would be put into jail and fined for praying. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it’s almost like common sense has left. When he mentions what’s happening in Guantanamo Bay, and then this offense, it’s ridiculous. People had better stand up while they can. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, if you don’t stand up—this is an out of control federal judge. One district court judge made that ruling. This wasn’t the Supreme Court. It wasn’t the circuit court. It was one district judge that says, “You cannot lead any prayer in the schools here in this part of Florida. If you do, you’re in contempt of court.” Well, they don’t have that authority. But he says, “I’ve taken the authority,” and who is going to challenge him? Maybe he could be impeached, but that’s about the only way. Lee. SCALIA ON RELIGION LEE WEBB: Pat, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is defending the high court’s recent rulings that allow religious expressions in the public square. He says the founding fathers would have wanted it that way. Scalia tells the Jewish newspaper Hamodia that it was never social, constitutional or legal tradition in America to exclude religion. He adds that the first amendment “certainly does not mean that government cannot accommodate religion and indeed favor religion.” INTERNET PEDOPHILES LEE WEBB: The United Nations says child pornography on the Internet is on the rise, and the images of the children are increasingly more shocking. Agence France Presse reports there are more than four million web sites featuring minors, including children under the age of two. And a new United Nations report says there are about 750,000 sexual predators worldwide prowling the Internet, looking to make contact with children. The child porn industry may generate as much as 20 billion dollars a year. PEDOPHILES IN CAMBODIA LEE WEBB: Cambodia is a top destination for pedophiles from around the world. Sex trafficking of children there is rampant. ABC News anchor Dan Harris traveled to Cambodia to see firsthand how a local human rights group is working with police to identify and arrest child predators. In a special edition of ABC’s Nightline, Harris traveled with investigators who have been following several pedophiles, including a man named Harvey Johnson. He is an American accused of using his job as a teacher to victimize young girls. ABC News was there when police moved in and made the arrest. Dan Harris: Did you have any idea they were following you for two years? Harvey Johnson: No. Dan Harris: You had no idea? Harvey Johnson: No. Dan Harris: They had agents staked out in the house next to yours. They had been following you everywhere you go. No idea? Harvey Johnson: No. Dan Harris: Does it surprise you? Harvey Johnson: Shocked. Dan Harris: They take him to the police station, where he is questioned and placed in a jail cell. LEE WEBB: We spoke to Dan Harris on our CBN Newswatch program, and he told us about Christian groups that are trying to put a stop to sex trafficking in Cambodia. Dan Harris (ABC News): There is a profound faith angle here as well. There are American evangelicals on the ground in Cambodia doing some very interesting things to try to fight this problem. They’re setting up shelters to take care of children who used to be held as sex slaves. There is one group called the International Justice Mission that is going out into the brothels and gathering hidden camera evidence that helps bust suspected American sex tourists and brothel owners and pimps in Cambodia. LEE WEBB: And you can see Dan’s entire report from Cambodia by going to our web site at CBN.com. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Shocking. Where is it coming from? It’s coming from the United States. The people who are the recipients of all this porn are either from the US or many are from Canada, or at least from the UK. Not Canada, but the United Kingdom. And here free people are the ones who are paying for the exploitation of these little children. And we say how do they get exploited? Well, children are cheap in Asia. People have so many children they don’t think much of them. And they really don’t consider children a blessing. Children are just a burden. And if they can sell them for a little bit of money or they can get a refrigerator or a television set or whatever, they don’t mind selling their daughters into prostitution. TERRY MEEUWSEN: You have to eat. And where people are starving, they do strange things to be able to do that. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you have to eat. But the ones I ran into in Thailand, they don’t have to watch TV. And they were trading their daughters for a color television set. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. It’s shocking, really. And it’s happening not just in that part of the world, but all over. PAT ROBERTSON: You put yourself in the position of a young girl, ten years old, 11 or 12 years old, she has feelings. She has emotions. She has hope. She has dreams. She has the desire for a better life like any girl here in the United States. And yet that hope and that desire is being blighted by these evil, evil people. They’re trying to take away her freedom and her dignity and her very life. I tell you, I hate sex trafficking. The United States and the world, they traffic at least a million women a year. And it’s horrible. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, there are some wonderful groups like the International Justice Mission who are really working hard to make some inroads into all of that. And these are good organizations to support and be a part of. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I know it sounds all extreme, but if I had my way I’d execute these sex traffickers. They take away the lives of people, take away the lives of young women. They seize them in East Bloc countries and bring them into the most hideous type of slavery. One million women a year are trafficked. And what is the legal community doing about it? Very, very little. Lee. ACORN INVESTIGATION LEE WEBB: The community organizing group ACORN is ordering an independent investigation of itself. The organization has recently come under fire following the release of undercover videos that expose ACORN employees advising a woman posing as a prostitute. One of those videos was shot in California, and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking the state’s attorney general to investigate ACORN’s activities there. ACORN is already under investigation for several voter fraud allegations from the 2008 election. POWER GRID VULNERABLE? LEE WEBB: America's electrical grids are vulnerable to a terrorist attack. Experts warn the electrical grids would come to a halt if terrorists or enemy states launched a nuclear attack. And they say that could disrupt everything from communications networks to military defenses. USA Today reports the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is now pushing Congress for authority to take protective steps. They want power companies to build metal shields around sensitive computer equipment. They say it could cost two trillion and take up to ten years to repair damaged grids. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Lee, I don’t think the American people are even vaguely aware of the danger that this poses. You have what’s called an electromagnetic pulse, EMP. And the idea is that this is triggered by a nuclear explosion in the atmosphere. It’s not something on the ground. It’s something in the atmosphere that is calculated to knock out the electrical system as we know it. That means the computer networks, the banking system, the mailing system, all that we use now based on computers. There was a time that it was a much simpler world that we lived in, and we could get by with hand operated adding machines and that sort of thing. No longer. All your bank records are on computer. All your stock records are on computer. Everything you own of a financial nature is based on computer records. And if those things are blotted out, it’s chaos. It is just utter chaos. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, think of the fact that a lot of people don’t use cash anymore. They simply use their cards through computerized systems. How would you buy anything? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you couldn’t buy. It would be all over. They would come in and say, “Well, here’s your credit card.” “Well, it doesn’t mean anything. I’m afraid our records are down. Our machines are down.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: “Our machine doesn’t work.” Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. And you want to know what your stock is. “We’re sorry, your stock records are obliterated.” It is a horrible concept. And as far as waging war, modern warfare is again based on computers and sophisticated electronics. And this EMP, it is one deadly thing. And it isn’t something we need to talk about. It’s something we need do about right now. Lee. ELECTRIC CARS LEE WEBB: Auto companies have hopes of eliminating the need for gas powered vehicles. So they’re unveiling a range of new electric and hybrid engine cars. The German auto show is highlighting the cars. One includes this BMW that has a plug in diesel electric hybrid and this new Toyota Prius that can charge in household outlets. Auto experts say there are more than 9,000 electric cars on the roads today, a number they predict will rise to almost 60,000 in the next two years. They have hopes of eliminating the gas powered vehicle. Do you think they will accomplish that, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: It will come, but the question is how long between service stations. The infrastructure has got to be built. Right now we have a wonderful infrastructure with all kinds of service stations that sell gasoline. So there would have to be something that allows a car to plug in. But it will come. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And you’ve got to hope that power grid doesn’t go down. PAT ROBERTSON: It’s all tied in together. What’s next? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, coming up, in the last decade, Syria has gone from America’s ally to its enemy. GRPAHIC: US/SYRIA RELATIONS We’ll tell you why and what the White House is doing to change that course, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: CURVES Announcer: So you finally decided that it’s the right time for you to lose weight. School is back in session. See what your children are learning and what they’re not. Man: There is a reason our kids don’t know history. These books are boring. * * * GRAPHIC: NO CHANCE LEE WEBB: Plus . . . . Woman: This can’t be my mother. LEE WEBB: Doctors gave her no chance of living, and certainly no hope for a full recovery. Woman: And he said, “This is false hope.” LEE WEBB: But there was one thing they weren’t counting on. Woman: They couldn’t explain it. The chills up my spine. LEE WEBB: Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the Middle East is a cauldron of problems, and it hasn’t gotten any better. I remember talking to one of the Israeli leaders about Syria, and they said Hafez al Assad, who was the leader of Syria, says, “We are the claws of the tiger.” And Shimon Peres of Israel said to me, he said, “How do you negotiate with claws?” Well, that’s what they think they are. The US is trying to jumpstart peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians. But any agreement may depend on one of Israel’s biggest enemies: their neighbor to the north, Syria. Gary Lane explains from Damascus. FOCUS: US-SYRIA RELATIONS GARY LANE: Syria was aligned with the US and coalition forces in Operation Desert Storm. But what about today, 18 years later? Is the Assad regime a friend or foe of its neighbors and the United States? Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki suggests Syria is a foe that can't be trusted. Earlier this month he lashed out at the regime for sheltering armed terrorists who launch deadly attacks on the Iraqi people. The Syrian government described the Iraqi president's accusation as immoral. Walid Phares (Middle East Analyst): This is big. This is very important to listen to. GARY LANE: Walid Phares is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington. He says Syrian intelligence agents have launched terrorist strikes in Iraq for more than six years. Walid Phares: The Assad regime began its warfare against the United States and the Iraqi liberated people at the end of April 2003. As soon as we were in, as soon as Saddam was down, Assad's terrorists were in. GARY LANE: US Middle East envoy George Mitchell made no public mention of Syrian behavior when he visited Damascus last July. No demands were made going into negotiations, no preconditions. Elliott Abrams was Deputy National Security advisor for President George W. Bush. He says the Obama Administration's approach to Syria is dangerous because the totalitarian regime hasn't changed its behavior. Elliot Abrams (Council on Foreign Relations): It's dangerous because it makes us look like a bunch of saps if we continue down that line and we don't get anything in return. Are they throwing Hamas out of Damascus? Will they finally stop sending jihadists through the Damascus International Airport to kill people in Iraq? What’s the quid pro quo? GARY LANE: Mitchell and President Obama believe a comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without Syria. The US goals is to isolate Iran by drawing Syria away from Tehran and moving the Assad government into a closer alliance with the West, use Syria to pressure terror groups Hezbollah and Hamas into moderating and joining the peace process with Israel, a negotiated settlement of the Golan Heights dispute leading to a peace treaty between Syria and Israel. Can the United States successfully lure Syria from its friendship with Iran? Abrams says only if Iran is viewed as a regime that is in decline in the Middle East. Elliot Abrams: Iran today certainly doesn't look as good as it did six months ago from the Syrian point of view. There is all this internal trouble now since the Iranian election. But ultimately I think you can't take Syria away from a victorious Iran. You can only take Syria away from an Iran that we've beaten. GARY LANE: And what about the Golan Heights? Israel captured it from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War. Elliot Abrams: As long as you have this really close relationship, alliance between Iran and Syria, they would have to be crazy in Israel to give the Golan Heights back to Syria. So I don't see where that negotiation goes. GARY LANE: Regardless of potential negotiations with Israel, talks between Syria and the US are proceeding. The countries are exchanging ambassadors and some sanctions against the regime are being lifted. So the Obama Administration is moving forward slowly and establishing improved relations with the Syrian government. And here in Syria, most of the people we talked to say they welcome the improved relationship. Woman: I'd like to have a good relationship between the States and Syria. Teenage Boys: We love America! Man: Iran, no. GARY LANE (Interviewing): No? Man: No. GARY LANE: You don't like Iran? Man: Oh, no. Walid Phares: They are not happy at all with the regime of Iran. They are secular people. They are moderate people. Most of them are just conservative individuals who want to maintain their tradition. They don't want the ayatollahs and they don't ant the Baathist regime. And it is about time for the American public to understand that. GARY LANE (Reporting): And it may become more apparent to Washington in the days ahead that the road to peace may actually depend more on decisions made not in Damascus, but in Tehran. Gary Lane, CBN News, Damascus. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: A bit of a conundrum, what they have with Syria. And they could be more peace loving. The current president is trained as a doctor. He was practicing medicine in Great Britain. And we always thought he was going to be sort of a nice man, but he has turned out to be a hardliner. He’s in the hands of the military. The military run the show. But it’s still time. They’ve been beaten severely. The Israelis just destroyed their air force, really whipped up on them. And they don’t have a prayer of doing anything against Israel. So it would be better if they made peace. But right now Damascus is the home of upwards of 40 different terrorist groups. They have the headquarters of these very violent groups in Damascus. And sooner or later, the government of Syria would have to say no more. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. The jury is out on what will happen . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, well, hey, hallelujah. TERRY MEEUWSEN: . . . . but a country to be watched. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s the Middle East. Who knows? All right. Terry, what’s next? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, still ahead, we’ll take you inside the mind of a death row inmate. Man: He said, “After we kill you, what do you want us to do with your body? We can bury you here or your family can come and get your body.” It’s like you’re preparing for somebody else’s funeral, but it’s yours. TERRY MEEUWSEN: See what it’s like to count down the days, hours and minutes left in your life, later on today’s show. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2: ENCORE DENTAL Spokeswoman: We’re downtown today, campaigning to save America’s teeth, because good dental health is about more than just brushing. Announcer: If you’re one of the millions of Americans without dental insurance, call Encore Dental for affordable, quality dental coverage. Spokeswoman: When was the last time you went to the dentist? Man: Uh . . . . Woman: Like, probably three years ago. Man: Probably back in college. And we in turn can use their contributions to help people all over the world. I want you to meet now one of our youngest CBN partners, Heather Bailey. Heather is only four years old, and yet she helped provide clean drinking water for an entire village halfway around the world. Here is her amazing story. HEATHER BAILEY TERRY MEEUWSEN: Heather Bailey was surprised to learn that some people don’t have clean water to drink. Heather Bailey: They would have to walk five miles to get clean water. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Like most four-year-olds, Heather usually watches cartoons. But before her mom could switch the channel, another show caught Heather’s attention, The 700 Club. Mrs. Bailey: There was a video on there about an older lady and her grandchildren, and it began to talk about how there was no clean water in their village. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Heather felt sorry for the family and wanted to help. She told her mom she wanted to sponsor a well. Heather Bailey: I wanted to build a well, so the people could get clean water, so they didn’t have to miss school or work. So that’s why I decided to build a well. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Her parents said they’d match any money Heather wanted to give. She soon discovered that the 25 dollars they came up with wasn’t quite enough. Mrs. Bailey: I said, “Okay, Heather, we’re going to send our 25 dollars in.” “Is that enough to build a well?” I said, “No.” I said, “It takes a lot. It’s 1,000 dollars to build a well.” “Well, I want to build a whole well.” Mr. Bailey: You think, “Okay, a four-year-old. We’ll send a little bit of money and help the efforts.” We started out with just giving part, but no, that’s not what Christ wants. Christ wants your whole life. Well, we needed the whole 1,000 dollars to dig the well, so we had to go out and get it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The Bailey family decided to do some fundraising. Heather Bailey: Mommy and Daddy helped me, and Daddy squeezed some lemons with me, so we could make the lemonade, and then we sold it. I really had a lot of fun, because I was like, “Okay, do you want some lemonade? Do you want some lemonade? Do you want some lemonade?” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Heather also sold cupcakes and some of her own artwork. In three months, they raised more than enough to drill a well. Heather Bailey: And I raised 1,070 dollars. It really made me happy to give other people a well. Mr. Bailey: I really enjoy giving, and I hope that that’s what we can instill in Heather through this process. TERRY MEEUWSEN: An inscription will be placed on the well that reads, “Everyone who drinks of his water shall thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” Mrs. Bailey: You can meet a person’s physical needs, but our physical needs are only temporary. Our spiritual needs are eternal, and so if through this well we can meet their spiritual needs as well, then that’s where the real gift is. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Raising that kind of money is a big project for a little girl, but Heather says she didn’t have to do it alone. Heather Bailey: Jesus helped me to raise 1,000 dollars. That’s a lot of money. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: What an absolutely precious child. But that’s what the Lord can do. If one little four-year-old can do that, think what you can do. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM So, folks, the number to call: 1-800-759-0700. Whatever it is that’s on your heart you want to do to help people, we’re here for them and for you. So pick up the phone and call in. And we’d love to hear from you. So what’s next? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BRING IT ON TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we’ve got some e-mail questions that have come in for you, and let’s start with Paula. She says, “When I got married, I was a virgin, but my husband was not. I always think he’s comparing me to his ex-girlfriend, and I suffer from insecurity and jealousy. Is there is a cure for insecurity and jealousy?” PAT ROBERTSON: Paula, the only security, the only cure is see yourself in Jesus. Let’s face it. If that girlfriend was so hot, your husband would have married her. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Good point. PAT ROBERTSON: You’re the one he chose, so you must have something going for you that she didn’t. And don’t worry about sex techniques or whatever. If you let it go, he’ll let it go. She’ll fade into a distant memory, because you are it. You are the one that he chose. And you are the one God chose. And you need to think of yourself as precious in the Lord and not comparing yourself with anybody. You are unique. You are a special creature created in the image of God. And there is nobody like you. There is nobody who can say what you say, think what you think, do what you do. Nobody. Nobody. So don’t worry about comparing yourself with somebody else. There is nobody else like you. So just keep that in mind. You are unique. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Christina, who says, “Pat, I’ve heard about a book you wrote called The New World Order. Would you talk a little about your message in this book? Are we going through the major changes now that you discussed?” PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s not as bad now as it used to be. Everybody was talking new world order. The bottom line is the concept of a new world order founds in the occult practices. And the idea is that there would be one world, one world under one dictator. And it’s a setup for the antichrist. So if my book alerted people, and I believe it did, that this is not a good thing, I believe people began to get off of this concept of “We’ve got to build a new world order.” Now, to say, “Well, the world order is such that the Bretton Woods Agreement was flawed or we need to set up a new currency system,” that’s a different matter. But what I pointed out was the roots of some of these things and how bad they were and where the origins of this whole concept of a new world order. Not good. All right. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Mary, who says, “My husband is very helpful to others, but many times he leaves things unfinished at our own home. I think he enjoys the attention he gets from others. The other day he left foot high weeds in our yard to cut the neighbor’s grass, and they were perfectly capable of doing their own yard work. Does he need to get his priorities straight or do I?” PAT ROBERTSON: No, Mary. He’s got it wrong. Here’s what the Bible says: if a man will not look after his own, he’s worse than an infidel. And his own is his own family, his own yard, his own possessions, et cetera. You’ve got to look after your own and take care of your own people, your own relatives and so forth. And if you won’t look after your own, you’re worse than an infidel. So you show that to him and say, “Listen, what you’re doing is worse than an infidel. You’re not Mr. Hero. Clean up your own act, then you can go help the neighbors.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Corey, who says, “Is there a distinction between Jesus’ 12 disciples and the apostles? And did these designations end in New Testament days?” PAT ROBERTSON: A disciple is a pupil. And so you say, “He’s a disciple.” That means that he’s a pupil. An apostle, apostello, it’s the idea of somebody that’s sent forth. And in those early days, I think those 12 disciples were 12 apostles. But later on, a disciple is somebody who is a pupil of Jesus. And the apostles are those who have a special office in the church. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But at that time, maybe they were both. Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: They were both in the early days. But they’re not mutually exclusive by any manner of means. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we want to thank you for your questions. We love hearing from you, and we always welcome them. You may have noticed gold prices have more than doubled in the last five years, but do you ever wonder why? Economists say the top five reasons are: a falling dollar, which also creates number two, a rising cost of living. Third, increasing demand for gold worldwide. Fourth, political uncertainty. And fifth, new Wall Street gold funds. It all adds up to higher prices ahead. Gold offers safety first and then profit. President Obama is dropping plans for a missile defense shield in Central Europe. The Czech prime minister told Prague Media that Obama informed him of the decision by phone. He said the US will not build a radar system in the Czech Republic, nor will it put up ten interceptor missiles in Poland as planned. The Bush Administration pursued the missile shield to counter growing threats from Iran and other Middle East states. The plan angered the Russians, who protested having US missiles so close to their soil. GOSPEL MUSIC HONORED JOHN JESSUP: Well, for the second year in a row, legislators reached across the aisle on Capitol Hill this week to officially honor September as Gospel Music Heritage month. Instead of bickering over controversial bills, lawmakers and organizers lifted their voices and raised their hands in recognition of Gospel music’s contributions to American culture and its impact on the nation. Sen. Blanche Lincoln ([D] Arkansas): I grew up in the Arkansas delta. We want to claim it as our own. We feel very personal about Gospel music. But worldwide now, Gospel music is renowned, both in the way that it lifts us up, that it speaks to us. And it speaks to generations of people all across the globe. JOHN JESSUP: Supporters of the event included the stellar awards and Gospel Music Channel owner Charles Humbard, son of televangelist Rex Humbard. And that’s when he made the biggest mistake of his life. It’s a mistake that put Billy on death row. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BILLY MOORE – PART ONE ANDREW KNOX: The year was 1974. Twenty-two-year-old Army Private Billy Moore returned from deployment in Germany only to find that his wife was involved with a drug dealer and addicted to heroin. To protect their three-year-old son, Billy took him and moved into a trailer. But Billy’s paychecks from the Army were in his wife’s name, and it was going to take the Army 90 days to get it changed. Billy Moore: And I told them, “I don’t have 90 days. I have my son with me now, and I need finances now, because I have to take care of him.” ANDREW KNOX: Billy sought help from various charities and pled with the military to speed up the process of getting his funds to him, but no one could help. Billy Moore: Bills began to come in. Having a trailer that we were living in with no food and no furniture, to the point where what else can I do? ANDREW KNOX: Then a friend of Billy’s gave him a tip about a man who had 20,000 to 30,000 dollars cash in his home. Billy had no criminal history, but burglary seemed to be the only solution to his financial crisis. Late one night, he broke into the man’s home. While fumbling around in the dark, he felt a rifle hit his leg. Billy Moore: As soon as it hits me, it goes off, and it scares me, because I’m all messed up. And so the pistol that I had in my pocket, I just pulled it out and I just shot in the direction of where the blast came from. I heard somebody fall. And I take two steps and the string hits me in the face. So I grab it and I pull it, and the light comes on. And so I see Mr. Stapleton laying there on the floor face down. I look at the pants. There were two wallets in the pants that were full of money, so I took the wallets. I turned around and, I don’t know why, I picked up the rifle. And I walk right down the street, open my trunk of my car and throw the wallets and the gun in the car. ANDREW KNOX: The next day, some officers paid Billy a visit. Billy Moore: The next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground with six shotguns in my face. And they told me, “Just move, please. Just make one move, so we can kill you.” Right then I knew that was it, that my life and my son’s life was over with, that I had just messed up everybody’s life. And not only my family, but Mr. Stapleton’s family. ANDREW KNOX: At his trial, Billy pled guilty to burglary and first-degree murder. His lawyer felt confident that Billy would serve prison time with the possibility of parole. Billy Moore: I got on the stand and I explained everything that happened to the judge. I told him how sorry I was, and that the murder wasn’t planned. I didn’t mean to do it, but I did do it. And because of that I am pleading guilty. I am responsible for that. He said, “Well, you did a good and honorable thing by pleading guilty. You did a good thing by not causing the court to spend a lot of money on a trial. However, on Friday, September the 13th, between the hours of ten o’clock and two o’clock you will be taken from the county jail to the state prison, and you will be executed until you are dead. ANDREW KNOX: Billy was led to the cell where he was to spend the last three months of his life. Billy Moore: The pain and the guilt were so intense the only thing I felt that would help is I’d just kill myself. So I’m laying there with this razor blade to my throat. And I have never heard God speak. I have never heard God speak at a church or anywhere. And I’m in this cell by myself in the dark, and I hear, “If you are so sad and upset about killing someone, why are you going to do it again?” So I cut myself loose knowing that whatever was going to happen had to be in God’s hands. ANDREW KNOX: Billy’s sentence shook his family. His aunt was a Christian and was praying that Billy would accept Jesus as his Savior. She asked her pastor and his wife to visit her nephew in prison. Just seven days before his execution, Billy clearly remembers the pastor’s words. Billy Moore: “We want you to know that Jesus Christ loves you and God is a just God.” He said, “And we love you, too.” And I’m like, “What?” I never heard about Jesus from the perspective that they talked about it. And I could feel the Holy Spirit. I didn’t know what it was, but I could feel that peace that they had, telling me that God loved me. He knew what I did, and He still loved me, and He died for me. ANDREW KNOX: Billy prayed with them to accept Jesus into his life. He was baptized that same day, and he knew a change had taken place. Billy Moore: The guilt about the crime was gone. Not the memory. I still remember it. But the guilt that Satan was using to kill me with was gone. And finally, in my whole life, finally I had peace. When I went back upstairs, I’m dripping wet, and the inmates said, “Man, what happened to you?” I said, “Oh, I got baptized.” And you know how they are. “Oh, yes, if I were going to be executed in a week I’d get baptized, too.” I said, “You can say what you want. I have finally done something that I know that is right. I know this is what I’m supposed to do.” ANDREW KNOX: September 13th arrived, and Billy prepared to die. Billy Moore: I’m just waiting to go be executed. Friday passed. Nothing happened. I’m like, “Okay, Lord, I thank you. I don’t know what’s going on, but I thank you that this didn’t happen.” ANDREW KNOX: Billy’s lawyer forgot to inform him that his case went to an automatic appeal with the Georgia Supreme Court. He was given a new execution date. But the case went for appeal once again. Over the course of 16 and a half long years, Billy had 13 execution dates, all of which were postponed. He studied the Bible, taught Bible studies to fellow inmates, and even earned his Bachelor’s degree from a Bible college. But no matter how he filled his days, the inevitable loomed in his conscience: one day, like the 13 others who disappeared from his cellblock, he, too, would be strapped to the electric chair and executed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, the story doesn’t end there. When we come back, Billy gets an unexpected letter. Billy Moore: After reading that, it was like I was just hit in the stomach by Mike Tyson. It was like all the air just came out, and it was like I’m just going to have a heart attack and die. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Find out what’s in that letter and why it stuns Billy, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 5: CURVES Announcer: So you finally decided that it’s the right time for you to lose weight. He tried everything he could to delay his execution, but Billy was now out of options, and his time was up. BILLY MOORE – PART TWO ANDREW KNOX: After 16 and a half long years on death row, Billy Moore’s execution date was set for May 24th, 1984. No more appeals. No more court dates. No more postponements. Then a few weeks before his execution, he says there was one thing he felt the Lord told him to do: write a letter of apology to his victim’s family. Billy Moore: How do you write somebody and apologize for killing their father or their brother and uncle? And so the letter was simple. I said, “If you can find it in your heart to forgive me I would appreciate it. But if you don’t, I understand, because I don’t forgive me either. If I was you, I wouldn’t do it either.” I began to get letters back, where they wrote me back and said that they were Christian people and that they forgive me. When I wrote them back telling them that I really appreciate what they did, they wrote me back. And it started a correspondence, that we were writing every week. ANDREW KNOX: The day finally arrived when Billy was taken to the deathwatch cell. He would stay there for 72 hours before being led to the electric chair. Billy Moore: When I went in the captain’s office, he said, “Here’s your execution warrant. You’ve got to read it.” That makes things final. Then he says, “After we kill you, what do you want us to do with your body? We can bury you here, or your family can come and get your body.” It’s like you’re preparing for somebody else’s funeral, but it’s yours. ANDREW KNOX: Fear flooded Billy’s mind as he walked to the deathwatch cell. Billy Moore: I got this manual about actual executions, what has happened to certain people when they were executed, how their eyes would pop out of their head, how their teeth would shatter, how their skin would catch on fire, and how they would defecate on themselves. And all this is going through my mind. And it’s like, “God, is this what’s going to happen? When the current hits, is it going to immediately kill me? Or am I going to linger on?” ANDREW KNOX: Billy tried his best to stay calm. He read his Bible, but the intense pain of what was to come distracted him from focusing on God. Billy Moore: The smell in this area, you could smell the antiseptic, but you could also smell the burning of flesh. You could smell death in there. ANDREW KNOX: Billy did his best to focus on the Lord and remain calm. Then something occurred that instantly turned his focus into fury. It was a letter from Billy’s ex-wife explaining that Billy Jr. was not in fact his son. Billy Moore: After reading that, it was like I was just hit in the stomach by Mike Tyson. It’s like all the air just came out. And it’s like I’m just going to have a heart attack and die. ANDREW KNOX: As he struggled to get control of his thoughts, Billy says the Lord spoke audibly to him: “You shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” Billy Moore: I said, “Lord, is this you? Are you telling me that I am not going to be executed?” I’m saying, “God, how do I stand on this? How do I make this mine?” And it came to me, “Faith comes by hearing.” I said, “Okay, I get it. I have got to say this.” So I’m walking back and forth in the cell saying, “Jesus said I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord.” The guard said, “What did you say?” I said, “Jesus said I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord.” He said, “What makes you think you’re going to live and your friends died?” I said, “Jesus said I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord.” ANDREW KNOX: The guards began preparing Billy for execution. They were about to shave his head. Suddenly, they were interrupted. Billy Moore: The sergeant came out of the office and said, “What are you doing with him?” They said, “We’re going to shave his head.” He said, “No, you’re not. I just got a phone call from the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal.” ANDREW KNOX: Billy had gotten a stay of execution, seven hours and 15 minutes before the scheduled time. What Billy didn’t know was that his victim’s family not only forgave him, but they, along with local groups, petitioned the courts to set Billy free. He spent six more years in prison. Then on November 8th, 1991, Billy was released. He is now married and an ordained minister who travels the globe speaking about the power of forgiveness. He remains in contact with his victim’s family and Billy Jr. Billy Moore: Christ forgave me. And the same way and the same power that He has forgiven me is extended to everyone. A lot of people think that I’m special and that God’s done something special for me. But when we look at it, He did something special for all of us when He died on the cross. And as He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MINISTERS SALVATION TERRY MEEUWSEN: Billy Moore is really a reflection of what God is about. He’s about forgiveness. It doesn’t excuse the choice that Billy made. It was a desperate choice. It was a wrong choice. It cost a man his life. This is what the Bible says about the mercy and the grace of God: it says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. It talks about His forgiveness extended to us. It doesn’t mean always that we don’t have to suffer the consequences of our choices. But it means we can have right relationship with Him, with Him. Some of you are watching this program today. You’re in jail. You’re in prison. Some of you are on the outside, but you’re in a prison of your own making. Jesus said He came to set the captives free. He wasn’t talking about getting out from behind bars. He was talking about something that happens in your heart, something that happens in your soul. You can be set free today. You don’t have to get good enough. You really can’t. There is nothing special you have to do to earn it. It’s the free gift of God through Jesus Christ. He loves you that much. Billy said early on in his story, “I’d never heard anybody talk about Jesus like that.” Well, maybe you’re one of those people that has a little bit of head knowledge about who Jesus was. You can give some facts on that, but you don’t have a relationship with Him. It’s the relationship that sets you free. And the relationship is based on you and I accurately and clearly seeing who we are as sinners, understanding the price that Jesus paid for us and then standing before Him and saying, “I want to receive that forgiveness. I need it. I want you to be Lord of my life as well.” And in that instant, He grabs hold of us and says, “I want you. I want you.” Maybe nobody has ever said that to you in your life. Jesus wants you. He wants you to be His own. Will you say yes today? It’s really that simple. Let’s pray together. Stop what you’re doing and just pray with me right now. “God, I don’t understand why you would love me, pursue me or forgive me. But today, I say yes to you. Jesus, thank you. Thank you for dying for me while I was still out sinning against you. I’ll never understand that kind of love, but I want to know it. Deep inside of me, I want to know it. So today, I’m asking you to forgive my sins, to be my personal Savior. I’m asking you to be the Lord of my life. Come into the center of my being. Teach me your ways. Open my eyes and my ears to who you are and what you’re speaking to me, how you want me to live. I want it all. Give me the power of your Holy Spirit to live differently. Make my life count for you, God. I receive the gift of eternal life that you offer me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” It’s a new beginning when we start this relationship with Him.
