The 700 Club Daily Broadcast
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome, folks, to this edition of The 700 Club. Hello.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Hello. Good to be with you.
PAT ROBERTSON: Good to be with you, too. Well, President Obama is once again taking on a major task. This one is one of the most difficult problems in the world. He says, “I’m going to bring peace to the Middle East.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, the President is meeting with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. But the White House isn’t promising any breakthroughs. John Jessup explains why.
TALKS
JOHN JESSUP: Ahead of the long flight to the US, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was all smiles, but many experts predict he may be greeted with little more than a cold shoulder when he meets with his Palestinian counterpart and President Obama in New York. That’s because of stalled peace talks that broke down over a major dispute on Israeli settlements. About a half million people live in the Jewish communities in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel believes in order to support them, they must be allowed to grow naturally. But President Obama, hoping to jumpstart Mideast peace negotiations, wants a settlement freeze to pursue an Israeli and Palestinian state living side by side, an unpopular idea among settlers like Jay Bailey and his family.
Jay Bailey (Settlement Resident): Even if we were to just pick up and move out, whether all of a sudden they would say, “Oh, okay, we're happy to have you living here side by side.” Israel's right to exist in the first place, we can't get that sentence out of their mouths.
JOHN JESSUP: Netanyahu and his conservative government have offered to limit construction for a few months to about 3,000 housing units in the West Bank. It's a sticking point for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who has refused to resume talks unless Israel agrees to a freeze.
Saeb Erekat (Chief Palestinian Negotiator): Believe me, Arabs and Muslims are asking one question: if President Obama cannot have Mr. Netanyahu stop settlement activities, who would believe that President Obama can convince Netanyahu to pull back to the ‘67 borders or to establish a Palestinian state?
JOHN JESSUP: But Israel has its own outstanding conditions. During last May's White House meeting, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his call that the Palestinians have to recognize Israel's right to exist.
GRAPHIC:
MAY 18
Benjamin Netanyahu (Israeli Prime Minister): The Palestinians will have to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, will have to also enable Israel to have the means to defend itself.
JOHN JESSUP: Another issue is Iran's growing threat in the region, particularly to Israel. Just today, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that it would retaliate with full might against any attack. It's viewed as a veiled warning to Israel, which sees a nuclear armed Iran as its biggest threat. John Jessup, CBN News, Washington.
PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, John. You know something? They are never going to settle this thing.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it’s been tried for decades.
PAT ROBERTSON: For decades.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Why do people think—what other nation would tolerate being told that they have to stop progress in their nation?
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, well, what other nation would allow a terrorist group to be right at their border and not be able to do anything about it? Israel is in an awkward position. They have to be strong. And the United States has forced them, or forcing them, into a position of weakness. And fortunately for Bibi Netanyahu, he says, “No way. I’m standing firm.” And these so-called settlements, they’re like rows of apartment houses right along the industrial built up area of Israel itself. There is nothing wrong with organic growth, and that’s what this amounts to. And to say, “Well, you can’t have any more of these, quote, ‘settlements,’” it isn’t tents out in the desert we’re talking about. We’re talking about an urban relationship that is vital to the growth of the country. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Let’s take a look.
BARY
LEE WEBB: Pat, Rifqa Bary can stay in Florida for now. Bary is the 17-year-old girl who ran away from her Muslim family in Ohio after she converted to Christianity. She ran away out of fear that her parents might try to harm or even kill her. The case has gone to court, and her parents are trying to get jurisdiction moved from Florida to Ohio. Wendy Griffith reports on the latest hearing.
WENDY GRIFFITH: Seventeen-year-old Rifqa Bary read her Bible and listened quietly as lawyers on both sides argued about whether her case should be tried in Ohio or Florida. Although her parents desperately want the case moved back to Ohio, Judge Dawson ruled that Rifqa Bary will stay here in Florida with a foster family while he talks to a judge in Ohio to determine jurisdiction, as well as what kind of case this actually is: criminal, dependency or truancy. Robert O’Connor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement says contrary to popular belief, an investigation done by his office did not conclude that it was safe for Bary to return to Ohio, but essentially that they couldn’t prove if she’d been threatened. (Interviewing): Basically what you’re saying then, it’s still the father’s word against the daughter’s word.
Robert O’Connor: That is correct.
WENDY GRIFFITH (Reporting): He says this case highlights the differences between Islamic Sharia law and the US Constitution’s first amendment rights.
Robert O’Connor (FL Dept. of Law Enforcement): Every time we invoke Sharia law in a case like this, I feel we legitimize Sharia law. And we don’t need to legitimize Sharia law. We need to legitimize constitutional law, American constitutional law and what it stands for.
WENDY GRIFFITH: Bary got some disappointing news Monday when the judge ordered her not to have any contact with the adult children of Blake and Beverly Lorenz. The Lorenzes took Bary in after she fled Ohio and told them her Muslim father had threatened to kill her after discovering she was a Christian. Bary’s parents have filed criminal charges against the Lorenzes, and the judge said that contact with the children would be inappropriate.
Jamal Jivanjee (Friend of Rifqa): They want her isolated. They want her to not be able to talk to people that she counts on, the people that she leans on.
WENDY GRIFFITH (Interviewing): In an attempt to discourage her?
Jamal Jivanjee: Discourage her.
WENDY GRIFFITH (Reporting): As Rifqa Bary awaits her fate here in Florida, she’s inspiring many believers around the world with her bold stand for Jesus Christ, including many who came out today to support her.
Carlos Sarmiento (Pastor, Orlando House of Prayer): I just pray that the Lord will use her mightily, to bless the Muslim community, to bless the body of Christ and to be a witness and a light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
WENDY GRIFFITH: Pastor Carlos Sarmiento of the Orlando House of Prayer led a prayer meeting for Bary Monday and was surprised when Bary herself showed up. Twenty-one-year-old Andrea Caraballo had the chance to meet Rifqa at Monday’s prayer meeting.
Andrea Caraballo (Orlando House of Prayer): She prayed with so much power and so much faith. And you would think at such a young age you would think differently.
WENDY GRIFFITH: A trial date has been set for October 27th in Ohio, and a pretrial hearing for October 13th in Orlando. But no decision has been made on where the case will end up. Wendy Griffith, CBN News, Orlando.
LEE WEBB: Well, Pat, it seems like the Florida courts are taking their time, but that was encouraging what that Florida law enforcement official had to say about constitutional law.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I think the judges in Florida will have to use some common sense and get this thing right, but not to send that child back to Ohio where terrible things could happen to her. Lee.
TERRORISM WARNING
LEE WEBB: Federal authorities are warning mass transit officials around the country to be on high alert. They say rail lines and other transportation systems are vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The warning follows the arrest of this Colorado man. Officials say he may have been plotting with others to detonate backpack bombs aboard New York City trains. Counterterrorism officials are recommending random bomb sweeps of terminals and stations and the police randomly patrol and board some trains and buses.
BIDEN ON 2010
LEE WEBB: Vice President Joe Biden says that if Republicans win 35 House seats next year it would be the end of the road for the Obama agenda. Democrats hold 35 seats in districts usually held by the GOP. Biden is concerned that if Republicans flip those districts, the White House could not push its legislation through Congress. Republicans need 40 seats to regain a majority in the House. One GOP strategist tells ABC News the Vice President’s remarks show the Democrats are nervous about the impact their big government programs will have on voters. Pat.
PAT ROBERTSON: Talk about a rallying call for conservatives. Joe Biden is sounding a trumpet for conservatives to organize and get with it. Thirty-five seats and it will be the end of the Obama program. And the Republicans are saying hallelujah. Lee.
FIXING GLOBAL ECONOMY
LEE WEBB: President Obama says he is determined to go after the, quote, “reckless risk-taking” that pushed the global economy into the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. And he also wants countries to work for what he calls safer growth in the future. He will get some support from other countries as the G-20 global economic summit begins in Pittsburgh Thursday. But the President will also face tough questions from other countries. They will want to know how the US plans to cut its enormous budget deficit, estimated at more than 1.5 trillion dollars this year. Pat.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the thing that I would have to ask, and I believe everybody has got to ask, is how will we ever pay off that deficit? Have you ever done the math to figure what it’s going to take to pay down, what is it, eight or ten trillion dollars? That is a huge amount of money. And where is it going to come from? Are we going to have eight and ten percent annual growth? Not so far. And we need 3.3 percent GDP growth in order to maintain a stable workforce. And if that gets below 3.3 percent, then we’re going to start having all kinds of welfare programs to keep workers occupied. We’re in a bad way, ladies and gentlemen, financially, and nobody seems to be addressing the problem.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, not only that, it doesn’t seem like we’re at the end of the spending spree.
PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, no. No, no, no. Much more. Much, much more. And then we’ve got a trillion dollar health care bill on top of all the rest of it.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Unbelievable. Well, from pay czars to car czars, why is this man so upset about them?
Man: You need to tell President Obama that you’re exercising your congressional oversight, that there are no czars in America.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, he’s not alone. We’ll take a look at the push back against the President’s czars, after this.

Man: Clear. Shock.
LEE WEBB: For 45 minutes, he had no pulse.
Woman: I’m looking in the face of my two children, thinking, “Okay, they’ve just lost their daddy.”
LEE WEBB: How he came back from the dead.
Man: This isn’t anything other than divine intervention.
LEE WEBB: On today’s 700 Club.
Man: I’m one of God’s modern-day miracles.

SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA
Spokesman: Seventy-seven million baby boomers hope to retire in the next ten to 20 years, and just three percent will be financially independent. But Uncle Sam wants to help you put gold into your retirement plan by creating a self-directed Precious Metal IRA. There are no tax penalties or new contributions needed to convert an existing IRA or other retirement fund into gold.
Pat Boone: This is Pat Boone to tell you about Swiss America’s three step plan for successful gold investing. First, call Swiss America. Request their free book, materials, and rare opportunity CD. Second, review the materials and learn why gold has more than doubled in the last five years and why experts say it may double again. And third, earn a return through growth of your gold investment.

PAT ROBERTSON: The term “czar” comes from Caesar. Caesar was the ruler of ancient Rome, and that’s where we get the term “czar.” The czar was the leader of Russia. Well, President Obama has appointed far more policy czars than any other President in history. None of them need Senate confirmation, and that has some members of Congress ready to take action. Our correspondent David Brody has that story from Washington.
FOCUS: OBAMA’S CZARS
DAVID BRODY: The White House has heard the chatter that the President is pulling an end run power grab by appointing policy czars that don't require Senate confirmation, thus not held accountable by Congress. In this administration, there are dozens of them, everything from a “Pay Czar” to a “Car Czar.” There is even a “Guantanamo Closure Czar.” The President has even joked about the volume of czars in his administration.
GRAPHIC:
YOUTUBE.COM
President Barack Obama: ABC is planning a series called Dancing with the Czars.
DAVID BRODY: But it’s no laughing matter to some, especially to those at town halls last month.
Man: I think you need to tell President Obama that you're exercising your congressional oversight, that there are no czars in America. Thank you.
DAVID BRODY: Some Republican congressman are taking action.
Rep. Tom Rooney ([R] Florida): This czar issue came up probably second behind the health care issue.
DAVID BRODY: Congressman Tom Rooney is co-sponsoring a bill that says if you are a policy czar that hasn’t been confirmed by the Senate, then you get no salary and no funds whatsoever from Congress.
Rep. Tom Rooney: When you're talking about somebody that reports directly to the President, we need to take a serious look. The courts need to take a serious look, interpret the Constitution, look at czars specifically and determine where they fit.
DAVID BRODY: There is more pushback on the Hill. Congressman Patrick McHenry is calling for all of Obama's czars to testify before Congress about their authority and responsibilities. Congressman Mike Pence wants the President to suspend any more czar appointments until Congress can determine the constitutionality of them. Even long-time Democratic senators like Russ Feingold and Robert Byrd have a problem with it. Byrd sent a letter to Obama saying, quote, “The rapid and easy accumulation of power by White House staff can threaten the constitutional system of checks and balances.”
Norm Ornstein (American Enterprise Institute): Anybody who has real policy-making power that goes beyond giving advice to the President ought to have Senate confirmation.
DAVID BRODY: Since the days of President Richard Nixon, there have always been czars, just not at this alarming rate.
Sen. Lamar Alexander ([R] Tennessee): It’s a poor example of what was promised to be a new era of transparency. It’s a poor way to manage the government, and it’s the most visible symptom of this administration’s eight-month record of too many Washington takeovers.
DAVID BRODY: Congressman Jack Kingston, a fierce critic of the President on this issue, is keeping a record on his web site. This is the way he tallies it: Ronald Reagan had three in eight years. George W. Bush, 14 in eight years. President Obama, 34 in just six months. Now, it’s a disputable number, because some of those were already czar appointments created by the Bush Administration. Plus, some folks on the list, like Science Czar John Holdren, have actually been confirmed by the Senate.
Chris Hayes (“The Nation” Magazine): If the argument is that this is some kind of indication of creeping big government, it just seems like it's 900th on the list. Something like holding people without a right to trial or asserting the states secrets privilege strikes me as a much, much bigger threat to liberty than whether some mid-level bureaucrat inside the Council of Environmental Quality is called by the media a czar or not.
DAVID BRODY: The White House says this is simply a case of a President has so many policy initiatives that he needs a lot of folks to help with that agenda. Whatever it is, it is definitely a bold new way of doing business.
Norm Ornstein: This is a management-philosophy issue as much as anything else. Where are you going to put the locus of decision making?
DAVID BRODY: The White House is determined to not let this czar story spin out of control. The administration has posted a myth versus reality response on WhiteHouse.gov. And White House press Secretary Robert Gibbs has also pointed out that the loudest Republican critics now weren’t complaining of czars during the Bush Administration.
Robert Gibbs (White House Press Secretary): I think it's been somewhat remarkable that in previous administrations so-called criticism of this has been a bit deafening. The silence has been deafening, only to have it come around as a political issue now.
DAVID BRODY: The truth is, some czars carry more clout and policy decision power than others. For example, Green Jobs Czar Van Jones resigned after conservatives brought to light his past controversial statements and actions. But he didn't hold much power. Yet Energy Czar Carol Browner does, and she may be the next target for conservatives. She used to be a member of Socialist International, which claims to support socialism and is very critical of US policies. Also, FCC Diversity Czar Mark Lloyd is on the conservative radar, too, for pushing mandatory diversity in broadcast station ownership and requirements for alternative viewpoints on the radio.
Norm Ornstein: There are some questions of some people who may have a lot of power who are not being held accountable when they should because there isn't a Senate confirmation process. But we shouldn't push this too far.
DAVID BRODY: But for conservatives who see the President as a big government socialist, the push has only just begun. David Brody, CBN News, Washington.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
PAT ROBERTSON: It’s an end run around the Constitution. There is no question about it. And Obama just wants to take on everything. That’s his problem. He wants to take on everything. He thinks he’s absolutely brilliant, and he thinks he can do everything all at once.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, you said yesterday that there was the potential problem of overexposure. And I think we’re there already.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: However, the fact that a President can appoint people to positions of authority where they report directly to the White House with no congressional oversight is just scary.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, if he wants an advisor, he’s got an advisor to tell him, “Hey, Barack, here is the best course.” That’s okay. You can have kitchen cabinets and everything else. But when these guys actually have power and they begin to make policy decisions—that Carol Browner used to head up the EPA office, I believe, in California. And if she is a socialist—I didn’t know that, but our story said she . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, Van Jones.
PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, it’s terrible. When these guys take over policy, and they call and they say, “This is the White House calling,” it sends chills up and down the bureaucracy. Make no mistake about it. You get a telephone call, “This is the White House.” And it doesn’t say what level of White House. It’s White House. And then they have stationary that says “The White House.” And so people don’t know whether or not they’ve been confirmed or how much authority they have. They’re White House.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, despite what you hear, be concerned. Be very concerned.
PAT ROBERTSON: Sure. Sure. Well, it’s going to be one more thing that’s going to trip him up. Terry, we’ve got presidential overreach. Too much exposure on the media. Too many initiatives at the same time. It’s a hubris, or whatever term you want to give. But it’s just incredible. This overreach is there. And it’s going to kill him sooner or later, I mean in a figurative sense.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Vernacular. Yes.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, coming up, he came to the ER with a massive heart attack.
Man: This is a person who by all standard measures should have died, and he didn’t. He physically survived. He mentally survived and was talking the next day.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: See how his life was saved after he had no pulse for 45 minutes.

CBN ALL STAFF CHAPEL
And Lord, provide. Provide. Be their answer, Lord God, Lord, especially for the one who wants a closer walk with you. Lord, remind us that when we seek you first, when we seek the Kingdom of Heaven, your dominion over us, then all these other things will be added, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Sin loves to live in darkness. There is something about light that cleanses it, gets rid of it. And it no longer has power over us. We get free from it. He knows we don’t want to confess our sins. He knows all this. And still, He believes in us. Still, He has entrusted to us the glorious Gospel. And He fully expects us to deliver to Him a Kingdom. He fully expects it. He has faith in us.

TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Seven Days Ablaze here at CBN. Every year we take this time to pray for you, our partners. And many of you have sent in prayer requests, and we’ve been praying for those, and we will continue to pray for them all week.

You can still send in your prayer requests. The easiest way to do that would be to call them in or e-mail them at this point, but you can call the toll free number on your screen: 1-800-759-0700. Or log on to CBN.com and submit them that way. But please know that we are praying for you all this week.
PAT ROBERTSON: Close to 100,000 requests have been sent in either on e-mail or on the regular what’s called snail mail. It’s happening. And why don’t we just pray for folks right now? Terry and I are going to join hands. “Father, we pray for the audience. We pray for our partners. Heal them, Lord. Heal their hearts. Heal their minds. Heal their finances. Take care of your precious people, in the name of Jesus. Receive an answer. Amen.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Amen.
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen. Receive it. There. Hey, it’s a good day. It’s good to see you.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thank you very much.
PAT ROBERTSON: I’m getting better and better.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: You are. I can tell. You’re stronger every day.
PAT ROBERTSON: Every day.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Can you feel it?
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. I’m starting to walk more briskly and things like that. But the doctor said three months to get over all this stuff.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, that was a big deal.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, they did a big . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: That was a big deal procedure.
PAT ROBERTSON: . . . number on me.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes.
PAT ROBERTSON: We ought to be so grateful for the medical professionals we have and the technology that’s available to us. It is awesome what these guys can do.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It really, really is.
PAT ROBERTSON: Awesome.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. You had several different procedures over a window of time.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the guy comes in through my chest, right here, punches a hole through there. It’s a hole. I’ve still got the . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I believe you.
PAT ROBERTSON: I’ve got a navel that moved up 18 inches.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Better up than down, I always say.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Well, anyway, he sticks this thing, this canula, in there, and he’s got a camera, and he’s got all kinds of stuff on there. And he’s got electromagnetic pulses that he can shoot. And it gets on the backside of the heart, and they look at it and they see what’s in there.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: An area that they normally wouldn’t have any ability to see.
PAT ROBERTSON: That’s right. And suddenly he sees this thing, and he says, “Wow, look at that.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It gives new meaning to home video, doesn’t it?
PAT ROBERTSON: Ooh, yes. Home movies. I haven’t seen the movies. Ten hours. But praise God. But they said it would take that long for everything to heal. So it’s healing slowly, but it’s getting there.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, that’s good news.
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: There are lots of people praying for you.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I know. I feel better, and it’s just great. But I’m just so grateful for medical. You should really thank God that He has put you in a country where there is freedom and where you have a free medical system, and you have the enormous creativity that is there. It doesn’t come cheap, believe me. It’s not something they give away for free, but it’s absolutely fabulous what can be done now that could not possibly have been done. I had a doctor—I’ve had cutting edge everything.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, that’s why people come from all over the world to America, to have procedures done. They don’t do some of these things anywhere else.
PAT ROBERTSON: But this orthoscopic stuff, they don’t cut you open. They have little cameras that go in, and they’ve got robots that do stuff. It’s simply amazing. But anyhow, I won’t go into it. This isn’t a medical show today. This is something else. Well, I introduce to you a couple: Tina and Ken Kirby. Now, Tina and Ken had been arguing for days. But Tina never dreamed that they might not have the chance to kiss and make up. And that almost happened after Ken had a massive heart attack.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
KEN KIRBY
(Reenactment): Let’s go. We have defib, precordial thump.
TIM BRANSON: On December 27, 2008, 52-year old police officer Ken Kirby was putting away Christmas decorations when he experienced severe chest and arm pain. His wife Tina called 911 and Ken was rushed to Oconee Medical Center in Seneca, South Carolina. Emergency room physician Edwin Leap was waiting with his team.
(Reenactment): Kirby, can you hear me?
TIM BRANSON: As Ken was being treated for pain, he had a massive heart attack.
Dr. Leap: He has heart rhythms that are inconsistent with life.
(Reenactment): Continue CPR. Check pulse.
Dr. Leap: And he gets shocked, and he gets shocked repeatedly.
(Reenactment): Clear. Shock.
Dr. Leap: Between the shocks, he’s getting CPR. He’s getting resuscitation drugs. He’s getting epinephrine, or adrenaline. He’s getting lidocaine for the heart rhythm. He’s getting magnesium. We give him thrombotic drugs. He remains in cardiac arrest. And this goes on and on and on with I think I counted 11 episodes of defibrillation.
(Reenactment): Charge. Clear. And shock.
TIM BRANSON: Tina was by her husband’s side until he went into cardiac arrest and she was asked to leave.
Tina Kirby: I’m taken back out of the room into a hallway that is filled with 50 plus people: pastor, church family, family-family, my children, and everybody starts gathering around and we start praying. And I mean we’re praying.
Dr. Leap: We’re not getting pulses. And so in the process of this, this looks grim. People don’t survive heart attacks with this prolonged resuscitation, because he’s not getting oxygen to his heart. He’s not getting adequate oxygen to his brain. He’s not getting adequate oxygen to his kidneys.
TIM BRANSON: Dr. Leap told Tina that Ken probably wouldn’t survive. Tina was devastated by the news, especially since she and Ken had been arguing for days.
Tina Kirby: And I’m looking at Dr. Leap, and I’m looking at my pastor who is right there with me, and I’m going, “Okay, how do I tell him I’m sorry now?” I don’t get to take any of that back. He’s gone. And I’m begging, and I’m pleading, and I’m looking into the faces of my two children, thinking, “Okay, they’ve just lost their daddy. Nothing will ever be the same.”
Dr. Leap: So during the resuscitation, we’re working, and we’re not getting anywhere. And Tina has already been in. She’s crying. The whole family is in and out. And I looked around at the staff and I said, “We just need to pray about this.” And there was no moment where we all dropped to our knees. There was no moment that we stopped doing anything. But I know in my heart that they did, because there were some great folks in that room. And they did. They may have whispered one prayer. They may have been praying the whole time. I don’t know. I don’t know what they did. I know I prayed. But we just continued to work.
TIM BRANSON: Over 45 minutes passed, and Ken still didn’t have a pulse. Then finally . . . .
(Reenactment): I’ve got a pulse.
Dr. Leap: He has a pulse. We go back in, and we take the bedside ultrasound and he has some cardiac activity. He’s got a little squeeze there, a little pump. Not a lot. His blood pressure is low, but he’s got something.
Tina Kirby: I believe that was the moment that all those prayers out in the waiting room, God just went, “Okay,” and He just reached down and touched.
TIM BRANSON: Dr. Leap and his team did everything they could before sending Ken to a Greenville area hospital for emergency surgery.
Dr. Leap: Ken was as stable as we could get him. He goes to Greenville, and we’re happy that we had some success, and we’re thankful and we’re excited, but we really, most of us have done this a long time. We’re not holding out a lot of hope for a good outcome.
TIM BRANSON: Family and friends continued to pray as surgeons worked for three hours to remove a blockage in Ken’s heart. Afterward the only thing to do was wait. Then . . . .
Ken Kirby: I remember waking up in a different hospital, actually a day and a half later, with my wife and both my kids coming into the room. And I just looked at them and said, “Hey,” and not realizing what I had been through completely at that time.
Dr. Leap: This was a man who the day before had been cyanotic, bluish purple from the chest up, with a very long resuscitation, what, 45 minutes, something like that of CPR. And he’s up the next day talking. It’s incredible. It’s an incredible story.
TIM BRANSON: Ken was released from the hospital in only nine days and returned to duty much faster than expected. Dr. Leap, a Christian, loves to tell people about Ken’s amazing story.
Dr. Leap: This is a person who by all standard measures should have died, and he didn’t. And not only did he not die, not only did he physically survive, he mentally survived and was talking the next day. I can’t imagine that this is anything other than divine intervention. Now, were we a part of that because we prayed? I think we were. We were part of it, because we worked hard and believed that there was something happening here. Yes.
Tina Kirby: It made me appreciate my husband. It truly did help me learn that there are a whole lot of things out there that we need to be concerned about, but we need to quit sweating the small stuff and to really appreciate our soul mates and our loves and our families and what God truly has given us.
Ken Kirby: I realize and my family realizes that without the prayers that were going on in that hospital for me that day, I would not be standing here right now. I’m one of God’s modern day miracles.

HOSTS PRAY FOR NEEDS
PAT ROBERTSON: Ken Kirby, a modern day miracle. Ladies and gentlemen, God is able. When those of us who have been through rather serious heart situations, and you realize how close you are to going over to the other side, that heart can just all of a sudden stop, and all the efforts in the world can’t get it back going again. In Ken’s case, he should have been dead. But God says, “No. I’m going to hear the prayers of Godly people. They’re there in the hospital. They’re there praying for you. I love you, and I’m going to keep you alive for a while.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. I think what his wife had to say was very significant, too. They were sweating the small stuff before that happened.
PAT ROBERTSON: That’s right.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And then they learned that you’ve got to major on the majors and let the minors go.
PAT ROBERTSON: Who cares what paint is on the kitchen wall? Who cares who takes out the garbage? Who cares about all this stuff? What’s important is your loved one, your spouse, the life you have together and the fact that you have life and don’t have death. Now, Terry and I are going to pray. I want you right now to join with us, wherever you are, and I want you to believe with us right now, because nothing is impossible with God. “Father, in Jesus’ name, we ask in your Holy name for the anointing power of God to come into people’s lives.” God is healing a lung condition right, a blockage in your lungs. You’ll just breathe, and all of a sudden your breath will come free. It’s emphysema. God has healed that, dramatically so. Your lungs are working. And Terry, what is God saying to you?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: There’s someone named Sally, and this story has really touched you as far as the relationship of this man and woman is concerned, and you’re asking God to give you wisdom and a second chance. And He has heard your prayer, Sally. Walk this out with Him.
PAT ROBERTSON: May the Lord touch you right now. There is a foot problem. You’ve got a foot fungus. The Lord is taking that fungus away. Your feet are completely whole. There will be skin like brand new, in Jesus’ name. Now. Now.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Someone else, you’ve had heart palpitations for a long time. A lot of fear in your heart and mind. Jesus Christ is healing that condition for you, and you’ll not feel that any longer.
PAT ROBERTSON: There is a headache. It feels like you got hit in the head with a sledgehammer. And the Lord is taking that headache away, in the name of Jesus.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Someone else with Crohn’s disease. God is healing that for you.
PAT ROBERTSON: Praise the Lord. Wherever you are, praise God. Now, Satan, in Jesus’ name, we bind your power. You shall not hurt God’s people. In Jesus’ name, loose them. Hallelujah. Amen.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thank you, Lord.
PAT ROBERTSON: Wherever you are, let us hear from you. We love to hear from you.

SOUTHEAST FLOODING
JOHN JESSUP: Welcome to Washington for this CBN Newsbreak. Storms are pounding the southeast with heavy rain and flooding. Some parts of Georgia have had more than 20 inches of rain since just Friday. Eight people have been killed in flash floods, including a toddler who was swept out of his father’s arms. Officials have also had to do emergency evacuations at area schools, and many have lost everything they own.
Woman: The treasures are my husband and my children, and they’re safe. And this other stuff is nice, but it’s stuff. This car was nice, but it’s stuff. And it can all be replaced.
JOHN JESSUP: Another round of storms is heading into the southeast.
MARRIED GAY COUPLES
JOHN JESSUP: A new US census reports shows a conflict between the number of gay couples who say they’re married and the number of actual gay marriages and civil unions. Nearly 150,000 same-sex couples say they’re married, but only 100,000 official weddings, civil unions and domestic partnerships took place in 2008. And gay marriage is legal in only four states: California, Iowa, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Analysts say the difference in numbers is probably the amount of gay couples who would get married if they could in their states. BRING IT ON
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we love to hear from you, and we love when you send us questions that you have via e-mail. It gives us an opportunity to share Pat’s perspective on the questions that are part of your heart and life. And Pat, this first one is from Rex, who says,
“Pat, when I lost my job, I started watching your show. Since then I have quit smoking and chewing snuff and I have a new job. Now I need to record your show in order to watch it. Does it matter when I pray with you that the show was recorded earlier?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Rex, God lives in eternity. He is not chained, if you will, with yesterday, tomorrow, today and all that. It’s all one continuum for Him. It’s all present. It’s eternal present with God. I’ll tell you a story, that we were praying one time, and the Lord gave me a word of knowledge that somebody was being healed of a bad knee. And this was a recorded show, by the way. It was recorded. And somebody was watching it, and I said, “It’s the right knee,” and the person who was watching said, “No, dummy, it’s the left knee.” And I stopped and said, “No, it’s the left knee.” And mine was on tape, and they were live. And God healed their knee.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Yes. And very often we’ve even had that odd situation where someone is watching the show and a word is given and they know of someone who has that malady. They claim it for them, and God heals the other person.
PAT ROBERTSON: You can’t limit God, so don’t try to. So just enjoy it. But there is a continuum always, and we’ve had weeks delay, month delay, different languages and so forth. Anyhow, go ahead.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is from Sharon, who says,
“My elderly sister is mentally incompetent and my adult daughter has custody of her and her assets. Unfortunately, she’s been ignoring my sister and spending the money on herself. I would like to get custody of my sister, but I dread taking my daughter to court. Are there times when legal battles are the best solution?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Sometimes they’re the only solution. You have courts for just this very reason. If somebody is misusing the trust, and that’s what it amounts to, they have to be called into account. And it’s nothing un-Christian to bring somebody—your sister is stealing money. That’s what it amounts to.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s her daughter who is stealing her sister’s money.
PAT ROBERTSON: Excuse me. Her daughter. Her daughter is stealing the money belonging to her mentally impaired sister. And you have to stand in the way of helping the infirm and the needy and the helpless.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. You might want to try talking it out with her before you do the legal route, don’t you think?
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you can talk it out, but if she’ll say, “I’m not doing it,” and she’ll down face you. But, of course, you go to that first. Yes.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Okay, this is Norma, who says,
“My 17-year-old daughter wants to drop out of school, and she doesn’t want to listen anymore. She goes out with her friends after school and comes home late. She also stays out all weekend, and I can’t stop her. The school counselor said to let her do whatever she wants. Do you think I should tell her to find her own place if she doesn’t want to follow my rules?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you could do one thing. You could, again, call on the court system. I’m sure your state—it depends on the state as to whether a minor is emancipated, but 17, you could say, “Look, she’s incorrigible. And I asked the police to come and pick her up and incarcerate her.” The kid needs so-called tough love. You can’t let her do what she wants to do. You’re ruining her, allowing her to do that.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s pretty hard at 17 to tell a child that they can or can’t do something when they simply do it anyway. Do you think she should tell her to get her own place?
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that will kick her down the line. Of course, she doesn’t have any money or anything, so the next thing you know she’ll be out hustling on the street or selling drugs or doing tricks.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s very difficult.
PAT ROBERTSON: And you don’t want to condemn her. One thing you could do is bring in the legal . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Maybe speak to an attorney and find out what your choices might be.
PAT ROBERTSON: I think it depends on the state. We have 50 states, and the jurisdictions are different. So this isn’t a national law. But it does seem like to me a child is incorrigible, and that’s what it amounts to. You can have restraints put on her, including putting her in jail. And she needs a shock. But the last thing in the world is let her do her thing. Good grief. All right.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Naomi, who says,
“Pat, I know I should read the Bible every day, but I have poor eyesight. Reading often seems like more trouble than it’s worth. What does reading the Bible really do for someone anyway? And if you can’t see, what can you do?”
PAT ROBERTSON: “Thy Word is a light, a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. By your Word is your servant warned. In keeping of your commandments, that great peace. Great peace have they that love Thy law.” You can go on and on and on. To have peace of mind, to have knowledge of what God wants, to be led by the Lord, on and on and on, things that are just a complete blessing. You need to hide the Word in your heart that you might not sin against the Lord. So you need to know what the Word is. So you’ve got poor eyesight. Why don’t you get one of those audio Bibles?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Exactly.
PAT ROBERTSON: They have them available, and you can play the audio. So you don’t read it, you hear it. It’s the same thing. That’s the way it used to be in the old days. They heard. They couldn’t read, so the people in the services read the Word to them.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s all the time we’ve got for today.
PAT ROBERTSON: Thank you for those questions. God bless you. Well, how would you like to make an investment and get an instant return? That’s what happened to Steve Crisafulli. It started when he saw someone in need, and he said, “I want to help.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
STEVE CRISAFULLI
ANDREW KNOX: Steve Crisafulli has been a 700 Club partner for years, but he’s especially touched when he sees Operation Blessing helping children who need new clothes and school supplies.
Steve Crisafulli: There was a Back to School program that Terry was promoting on the show. And it showed Terry actually taking children into the stores. I was taken by this, because right here in the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the world, and yet we still have children that can’t even afford clothes to go to school. I was paying bills, and I was going to write a check and began to put it into the envelope to mail it. And I said to myself, “This is going to make it pretty tight between now and next Friday.” I prayed about it, and the good Lord said, “Go ahead. I’ll take care of it.”
ANDREW KNOX: The next morning when Steve went to work at the car dealership . . . .
Steve Crisafulli: A colleague of mine, Phil, came up to me. He said, “Steve, we had a sale yesterday.” You see, when we’re off on our day off, and one of my customers comes in, Phil will take care of him, and we’ll share the sale. As soon as that happened, the verse that came to mind is one that I live by quite a lot, and it’s Matthew 6:33. And it says, “But seek first His kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Because the commission I got was 12 times what I offered to the kids. He said He was taking care of it. He was taking care of it. It will come back to you. The Lord says it will.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
PAT ROBERTSON: That’s what the Bible says, folks. And we invite you to be part of a great adventure, an adventure in changing the world.

SET-UP PIECE

Do You Believe in Miracles?
Man: Yes.
REPORTER: Why is that?
Man: I believe in God. God can do anything.
Woman: Yes, some things happen that surprise you. Maybe like you’ve been at the right time in the right place. Just luck.
Man: They might just see it as a coincidence. It just depends on the individual’s beliefs.
Woman: Well, I grew up Catholic. I think it was kind of like in my belief.
Woman: Well, I think childbirth is a miracle, that two people can make like another child.
Woman: They’re always out there. You’ve just got to be ready to have your eyes open and look for them.
Man: We’ve heard stories of young people breaking their necks and never being able to walk again, and three weeks later they’re walking. Is that a miracle or is it just because a doctor misdiagnosed the kid? You tell me.
Woman: I still believe in miracles. Yes.

GUEST: BRUCE WILKINSON
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Please welcome back to The 700 Club the author of The Prayer of Jabez, Bruce Wilkinson. It’s great to have you with us again.
Bruce Wilkinson: Terry, thank you. It’s great to be here.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Hey, you’ve got a great new book called You Were Born For This. And you say in your book that people can actually participate in miracles. What do you mean by that?
Bruce Wilkinson: They can. Well, Terry, this book wasn’t meant to be written. I had signed a contract with a publisher to write two other books and was well on my way. And I would fly out to Colorado Springs to be with them. And they would say to me, “Tell us about what’s been going on in your life?” And I would share a couple of miracles with them that happened since the last time. And the third time I was with them, they leaned forward and said, “Bruce, that’s what the book should be about. How do you do that? How do you partner with God so that time after time He shows up?” And I said, “You’ve got to be kidding? You want to write a book about that? I’ve never spoken about that.” When you think about it, most people don’t believe that there is a real way to partner with God to deliver miracles to people in need.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: You say miracles are actually predictable.
Bruce Wilkinson: They are predictable.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: What do you mean?
Bruce Wilkinson: Well, let’s say I meet you, and you have a particular need, and you are praying to God. “And God, please send somebody to help me with this particular problem.” And God says yes. Well, then God needs to find a human being to come to you and deliver that miracle. If you know how, if you know the key to the problem that person has, because the Bible gives you specific answers to specific needs. And every miracle in the New Testament that Jesus Christ did for another person was because they had a need. So the need is the basis for a miracle. And when you learn the answers to the needs, then you’re able to partner with God in delivering that answer to another person in such a way that God shows up. And most people don’t really believe that that can happen for them. But they may have two or three miracles in their lifetime, but as far as—well, let me tell you what happened. We tried, I wanted to know if people would actually do this. We have seven keys in there, seven different types of miracles. And we taught this in ten different churches, ten different denominations, to find out would people actually do this? It’s a shocking idea that you can live like the book of Acts was. You can actually, wherever you go . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Everybody wants that . . . .
Bruce Wilkinson: They do.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: . . . . but nobody knows how to get it.
Bruce Wilkinson: They don’t know how to do it. So in the last time, this beta test site, we had 70 people. And on a Thursday night I taught them the first key, and I said, “Okay, I have to leave this weekend. Why don’t you try it, this weekend when I’m gone? And I’ll come back on Monday night, and I’ll teach you the next key. Why don’t you see? Why don’t you leave on Friday morning, and say, ‘Lord, I want to try this key, and I want to see if a miracle actually happens to me?’” So people were kind of shocked a little bit. And I came back on Monday night, prayed all weekend for these people. And I said, “Okay, how many of you had a real miracle this weekend? Not one that your spine tingled or you felt something. It’s whether the person you helped said to you, ‘That was a miracle for me.’”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: That was a miracle.
Bruce Wilkinson: And 26 people raised their hand out of 70.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow.
Bruce Wilkinson: And I said, “Now, how many of you, this is the first time in your life you actually went out for the purpose of delivering a miracle to somebody else?” They all raised their hand. I said, “Okay, somebody tell me a story.” And this big builder stands up. And he says, “Oh, I don’t usually talk in front of people.” And he walks forward, and he said, “When you asked us to do this,” he said, “my heart stopped. To get up Friday morning and use this key and ask God to do a miracle through me, that’s not going to happen. But I did it.” He said, “Then I went on a job, and I bid on putting some new windows into a building. And I walked in, and this guy was in a bad mood.” And he said, “Oh, that’s the person,” because the person has a need.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: So he knew. He knew.
Bruce Wilkinson: A person is in a foul mood, there is something going on. That’s the basis of a need, which is a miracle. A miracle is when God comes through you to meet another person’s need, but that God shows up in the process. That’s what makes it a miracle, not a good deed. It’s when God shows up. So he says to the man—because you have to know what the need is in the person. Not, “I’m having a bad day,” but what’s the real need? The man said, “Oh, my marriage is falling apart. I love my wife. She loves me. But it’s not working, and I don’t know what to do.” And Jimmy said, “My heart began to pound.” And he said, “Oh, boy, it’s now my turn. It’s my turn to partner with God.” And he said, “When you partner with God, you don’t know what God is going to do.” And so he said to the man, “Would you like to know the answer to get your marriage together?” The guy said, “Oh, that would be wonderful!” And Jimmy said, “Then I was waiting for God to show up, and God didn’t show up.” And he said, “I remembered what you said and when you taught us this.” It’s in the book. You’ve got to give God about a minute. Just give God a minute. So he said to the man, “Go get a pad and a pencil. When you come back, I’ll tell you the answer.” So the guy leaves, comes back. Jimmy is praying, “Lord, it’s your turn now. I was John the Baptist for you. I prepared the way.” A miracle is only when God does it.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Yes.
Bruce Wilkinson: So God had to show up. So Jimmy says, “I can’t explain what happened next.” He said, “I blurted out to the man and said, ‘Go home and make your bed.’” And the guy says, “Go home and make my bed? Why would you say that?” And then he said, “Do you realize the number one thing we argue about in our marriage is my wife gets out of bed first. I get out of bed second. I never make the bed. And she said, ‘If you love me, you would make the bed.’”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow. Wow.
Bruce Wilkinson: And he said, “I’m going to home. I’m going to make the bed.” And he said, “How could you possibly know that?” And Jimmy said, “You know I couldn’t know that, but who sent me here?” He said, “Well, God sent me here. This was a miracle for me. This will save my marriage.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: You write about things that are available to all of us to walk in on a regular basis. It’s not hard to do it, but you have to say yes to being part of the God experience in all of this.
Bruce Wilkinson: You do.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: The conduit in all of it. The book is called You Were Born For This. And if you enjoyed Prayer of Jabez or Secrets of the Vine, you want to get You Were Born For This. It will really revolutionize the way you live your life from day to day. Thank you.
Bruce Wilkinson: Thank you, Terry.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s always great to have you here.
Bruce Wilkinson: Great to see you again.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thanks. You, too, Bruce. Pat.
PAT ROBERTSON: Bruce is an inspiring man. Thanks for being here, Bruce. Well, we leave you today with these words from Matthew . . . .

END SPOT B: PLEDGE EXPRESS
Announcer: While Mary feeds her two young daughters, she also helps feed needy families around the world. While Bob hands a drink out to a co-worker, he helps give water to villages with new wells. And while Carl builds a house for his son’s new puppy, he helps rebuild homes in disaster areas.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: These people all have something in common. They’re CBN partners who have joined Pledge Express. It’s easy to sign up. Just give us a call, log on to CBN.com or return the Pledge Express form you receive in the mail.
