The 700 Club Daily Broadcast
Thursday, September 24, 2009
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. President Obama is planning to talk about what’s best for the world economy at the G-20 economic summit in Pittsburgh, but he may run into some problems.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, that’s because many countries are worried about the big spending going on in Washington and the huge budget deficits. Jennifer Wishon has the story.
G20
JENNIFER WISHON: What does this, the International G-20 Economic Summit, have in common with this, Americans protesting the health care bill this summer?
Man: And we keep getting the bull. That's all we get is bull. You can't tell us how you're going to pay for this.
JENNIFER WISHON: Both are concerned about the same thing: out-of-control federal spending in Washington. President Barack Obama says the global economy can't rely on huge borrowing and spending by Americans, but other countries are worried the US is running its deficit into the stratosphere, leading to a national debt that could hit 20 trillion dollars in the next several years. That's the same concern that drove many Americans to protest massive health care legislation moving through Congress.
Man: Will it pay for its way or will it be underfunded like Medicare and Medicaid?
JENNIFER WISHON: US leaders say a large part of the deficit was spent to save the global economic system from a meltdown last year when the credit crisis hit. And so far world stock markets, including America's, have recovered. But analysts and countries like China are worried that big government spending in Washington will undermine the value of the dollar in the long run. It's one of the issues G-20 leaders will discuss.
Igor Shuvalov (First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia): How to live after the crisis, what to do with exit policies, and whether all of us carry on with fiscal stimulus.
JENNIFER WISHON: In Pittsburgh, extra police officers stand by to protect the city.
Man: I, state your name, do solemnly swear . . . .
JENNIFER WISHON: Repelling off a bridge towards the Ohio River, members of Greenpeace have already unfurled their message to leaders: reduce emissions now.
Damon Moglen (Greenpeace): We are trying to get a message out to the G-20 leaders that climate change is the preeminent issue of our time and they need to focus on this issue and they need to get greenhouse gas emissions down.
JENNIFER WISHON: That’s something President Obama supports, but critics say it, too, could be costly. So the President may face a tough time at home and abroad talking about the need for spending discipline. Critics are likely to say get your own house in order first. Jennifer Wishon, CBN News.
PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Jennifer. Terry, I have no confidence in Obama.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, what do you think is going to happen with all of this?
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I think he’s going to lead us over the cliff. I think that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, and yet he is filled with—the Bible talks about pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. He’s got a haughty spirit. And he’s just so full of himself that he thinks he’s the messiah. And he’s taking on projects and initiatives that are way beyond him. And the economic situation is an absolute mess. We are going into the hole at such a rate that we cannot dig our way out of it.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s the scary part, is there are some decisions that could be made and that are being made that are irreversible.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s going to ruin our economy before we can catch up with it. And the other thing that he’s doing, he’s going down the road. His foreign policy is just screwy. For example, this business in Honduras. The Supreme Court of Honduras said to the president, “You have exceeded your power. You are illegitimate, and we say that you should be removed from office.” But they did it completely legally. So what happens? Obama says, “We don’t accept that. Your Supreme Court didn’t know what it was doing, and therefore we believe that Zelaya is still the president.” And so they’ve got a big revolution going down there in Honduras. Well, he’s insulted the Chinese in terms of trade wars. You just say, “Oh, my Lord, what else is he going to do that’s going to hurt our economy and hurt our society?” And yet he’s got such a persona, like, “I am smarter than anybody.” Look out. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee.
UN
LEE WEBB: Pat, President Obama and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke to the United Nations Wednesday. But they got very different responses. Erick Stakelbeck has that story from New York.
ERICK STAKELBECK: President Obama made it clear from the outset of his speech here at the United Nations that he would be the anti-Bush. Whereas the former President was looked at here at the world body as going it alone, President Obama committed to working with the UN in trying to build the UN up and make it relevant once again. He talked about working with the international community when it came to climate change and the Israeli-Pakistan issue. He also had some tough words for Iran and North Korea over their nuclear programs.
President Barack Obama: Those nations that refuse to live up to their obligations must face consequences. Let me be clear. This is not about singling out individual nations. It is about standing up for the rights of all nations that do live up to their responsibilities.
ERICK STAKELBECK: Now, while the agenda the President set out in his speech was very ambitious, it was short on solutions, specifically when it came to the Iran-North Korea issue. The President says he will hold those two countries accountable if they continue to pursue nuclear weapons, but he didn’t say what that would entail. Is it sanctions? Is it military action? He was pretty unclear about that. The other big story here: Moammar Gadhafi. The Libyan dictator made his first appearance at the UN General Assembly, tore into the General Assembly. He set up his tents here just nearby in suburban Westchester County. And Gadhafi’s appearance was greeted by a number of protestors here. He had pro-Gadhafi and anti-Gadhafi protestors jockeying for position outside the UN. But the largest amount of protestors were devoted to protesting the appearance of Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad went on a bit late after Gadhafi’s rambling one hour and 36-minute speech. But what Ahmadinejad had to say did not surprise. He struck a typically radical tone.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iranian President): Our nation has successfully gone through a glorious and fully democratic election, opening a new chapter for our country in the march towards national progress and to enhance international interactions.
ERICK STAKELBECK: From the UN headquarters in New York, Erick Stakelbeck, CBN News.
MUSLIM PRAYER RALLY
LEE WEBB: A massive Islamic prayer rally is scheduled to take place on Capitol Hill Friday. Fifty thousand Muslims are expected to take part in the traditional Friday prayer ritual. The gathering is being billed as a “Day of Islamic Unity.” Organizers say the goal is to illustrate the “wonderful diversity of Islam.” The Web site concludes, “Our time has come.” And we will have a full report on the rally on Monday’s 700 Club.
SOUTHEASTERN FLOODS
LEE WEBB: The massive and deadly floodwaters are receding in Georgia and residents are returning home to find a muddy mess and no government help to rebuild. This is just some of the damage here, but like many states, Georgia is broke. Early estimates put the flood damage at a quarter of a billion dollars. And only about 15 percent of Georgia residents own flood insurance. The state is hoping the federal government will step in to help. But in the meantime, CBN’s Operation Blessing is already on the ground helping to bring relief to some of the thousands in need.
Jody Herrington (Operation Blessing): As we made our way up downtown Atlanta Industrial Boulevard, roads were closed. As we headed on taking an alternate route, we ended up looking straight at Chattahoochee River, where things are just still swollen and overflowing. We delivered over 62,000 pounds of food and disaster relief products. And we have also begun to deploy equipment here.
LEE WEBB: At least ten people have died in Alabama and Georgia as a result of that flooding.
SEE YOU AT THE POLE
LEE WEBB: Students gathered for the annual “See You At The Pole” event at schools across the country. They showed up early Wednesday morning to pray around school flag poles before class. Several students say it strengthened their faith and helped them meet other Christian students. A group of Texas teens started the event 19 years ago. Now more than three million students from all 50 states participate. And, Pat, the movement has even spread to more than 20 countries around the world.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s a fabulous thing. And I might point out that if it were not for the American Center for Law and Justice, they wouldn’t be doing it, because the school systems in these various states tried to stop it. As a matter of fact, they called the police on some of them. We had pictures of one leader who had been handcuffed and put into a police car because of praying before school. And the American Center for Law and Justice got into it and made sure that those students had that right. And now three million students gather to pray. It’s a very encouraging thing.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: It really is.
PAT ROBERTSON: A student led initiative. What do you have?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, up next, a mother who was forced to teach her children the Koran.
Woman: I felt like I’m feeding my children poison, and that was the hardest thing, to know the truth and not be able to speak it.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: See why this woman is now freely speaking the truth, after this.

SHUTTING DOWN DIVORCE
LEE WEBB: Coming up later, a marriage on the rocks gets even rockier.
Man: The smallest remark from my wife would trigger an outrage.
LEE WEBB: The dare that finally drove them apart.
Woman: That’s when I said, “I don’t want to live like this anymore.”
LEE WEBB: And the prayer that shut down their divorce.

SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA
Pat Boone: Pat Boone here for my good friends at Swiss America, the company that has helped Americans to rediscover gold for over 25 years now. You may have noticed gold prices have more than doubled in the last five years, but do you ever wonder why? Economists say the top five reasons are: a falling dollar, which also creates number two, a rising cost of living. Third, increasing demand for gold worldwide. Fourth, political uncertainty. And fifth, new Wall Street gold funds. It all adds up to higher prices ahead. Gold offers safety first and then profit. A wise economist has said a portfolio without gold is like walking around naked in zero degree temperatures. So don’t get caught in the cold without gold. Call Swiss America now for a free educational kit. Ask about tax free gold IRAs. Seize this rare opportunity today. Call now.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the story of 17-year-old Rifqa Bary has captured the hearts of Americans. But Rifqa is just one of hundreds of women who have fled Muslim persecution. Today Gary Lane brings us this report of a former Muslim who escaped from Egypt, only to be further harassed when she got here to the United States.
FOCUS: EGYPT HONOR KILLING
Amani Mustafa: The first thing I said, this cannot happen here. This is the land of freedom. They cannot reach me here. I couldn't believe it.
GARY LANE: For more than ten years, Amani Mustafa and her two children were on the run in the United States, hiding from her ex-husband and his brother. Amani says both had threatened to kill her if she did not return to Egypt and Islam. Amani became a Christian after reading the Bible in secret in the bathroom. When her father learned she had left Islam, he summoned her to his home.
Amani Mustafa: He said, “I have a straightforward question for you. Is it Islam or is it Christ?” And as I was about melting, I said, “It is Christ.” And at this point he got up to hit me. And he said that he going to do this and that, and he was very threatening. And he was going to tie me to his car and make me an example to the city.
GARY LANE: Amani fled and was in hiding for several years. She later married a Muslim who promised she could practice her Christian faith in secret. But his attitude changed after their second child was born. Amani was no longer allowed to attend church. She had to wear a veil. Still a Christian in her heart, Amani says she struggled when her husband forced her to read the Koran, the Islamic holy book, to their children.
Amani Mustafa: I felt like I'm feeding my children poison, and that was the hardest thing to know the truth and not be able to speak it.
GARY LANE: Amani’s husband agreed to send her and the children to live in the United States. He vowed to join them later. Amani says she felt a sudden sense of freedom and relief when the plane left Egyptian airspace.
Amani Mustafa: The first thing that went was my veil. That terrified my son as he looked at me, and he said, “Mom, you're going to go to Hell.” And I said, “Son, we just left.”
GARY LANE: Once in America, Amani recommitted herself to Christ. That's when the persecution returned. When she told her husband that she was filing for divorce, he demanded the kids be brought back to Egypt and Islam. He say Amani would pay a price for her decision.
Amani Mustafa: He sent his brother after us. They were listening to our conversations, for myself and my family, my mom also. And there were people surveilling us. And I didn’t know that this could even happen.
GARY LANE: Amani and her children fled to another state where her husband could not find them. Today, more than ten years later, the threats have disappeared. She's no longer in hiding. Amani has moved forward publicly with her life. She feels called to serve in various ministries, reaching out to women facing Islamic oppression. She is the host of a new woman's television show that is broadcast throughout the Middle East. Amani and her co-hosts, all former Muslims, talk about their experiences with Islam.
Amani Mustafa: There are so many women living under Muslim husbands or Muslim fathers or Muslim families that are living the same things that I lived back then. There are so many women that need to know and hear about the freedom of Christ that I experience today. Those tears are not tears of pain, but actually they are tears of appreciation, because now I know that I am saved though the grace of Christ.
GARY LANE: Amani feels privileged to share her joy on television, and she is proud of her children. Her son, Joshua, has become an ordained pastor. Her oldest daughter is also in ministry. Amani now enjoys a loving marriage with her American Christian husband and their daughter, Mary.
Amani Mustafa: I am convinced that every experience I lived through in my life, it was to be for His glory, to be used for His glory. You see, we have a choice. Either we sit and mope and weep over our spilled milk, or we can just use the hardship and the bad experiences for His glory. And I choose to glorify God's name.
GARY LANE: Gary Lane, CBN News.

PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Gary. What a wonderful story of redemption. But ladies and gentlemen, it’s tough. To think what those women go through in Muslim countries. Women are nothing more than chattel. You read the Korean. You read what Mohammed had to say about the role of women. It is terrible. They’re second class citizens. And in enlightened society, we just realize that Christ sets us free. “For freedom, Thou has set me free.” And that lady came into freedom when she was young, and she’s still enjoying freedom. Thank God.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. Well, I think of that scripture that says “All things work together for good to those who love God.”
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And look what He’s doing. Amazing. Well, coming up, a family falls apart behind closed doors.
Woman: We’re supposed to be this Christian family. And on the outside it looked good, but on the inside and at home, it wasn’t. Him still drinking, still smoking, the fighting still going on.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Watch how this couple cleaned up their act just 30 days before their divorce was final.

TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, yesterday our CBN staff met at noon to pray for the needs of you, our partners. It was part of our ongoing Seven Days Ablaze week of prayer. And this time, David Jeremiah was the guest speaker.
SEVEN DAYS ABLAZE HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. David Jeremiah: Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

DR. DAVID JEREMIAH
CHAPEL 9-23-09
Get your eyes off of everything else and get your eyes on Jesus. That’s what He’s saying. Looking unto Jesus. What we need right now more than ever before in the church of Jesus Christ are men and women of God who believe so deeply in the faith that even though they don’t understand where it’s all going, they know they’re with the Lord, and He is with them, and they’re going to walk together in endurance wherever God takes them. And He will take you to victory.
Michael D. Little (CBN President/COO): We’re about to pray for these requests that have come in. Let’s lift them as if we’re lifting them to Heaven. Minister to those who are brokenhearted because loved ones are apart from you or apart from them, and they’re asking, “Lord, strengthen me now.” Give strength, we pray, because there is no limit to your strength. Work, in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. And amen.

HOSTS PRAY FOR NEEDS
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, that’s a part of our daily Seven Days Ablaze prayer for you. And many of you have sent in—thousands and thousands of you have sent in prayer requests, and we want you to know that we take that seriously.

Every day we gather as staff here and we pray specifically for you. And, boy, the needs are great, Pat. This is someone asking for God’s direction and will in a custody case. That’s a tough situation. A husband in a nursing home with prostate cancer. Someone saying, “Please pray for me. I have arthritis in hands, knees, back and hips.” “For me and my family to be filled with the Holy Spirit.” “Break the curse of poverty over my family.” What do you have?
PAT ROBERTSON: Suffering, Terry. Suffering. We have so many people who are suffering, and God wants to heal you. Somebody has osteoarthritis, terrible pain. Somebody says, “I need to be delivered. I’ve got a 10,000 dollar debt.” Well, that debt probably came through your own action, but nevertheless, the Lord will help you get out of it. Somebody has diabetes. There is a daughter who needs to be free from drug addiction. Somebody else has sleep apnea. I don’t know if that’s them or their—yes, I guess it’s them. But wherever you are, folks, God Almighty—I was reading today in Jeremiah. He said, “I am the Lord. I am Jehovah. I am Yahweh. Is there anything too hard for Me? Is there anything too hard for Me? I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. I created it all. I created everything. Is there anything too hard for Me?” What is it that’s too hard for God? Now, just ask yourself. What is it you’ve got that’s too hard for God? Money? He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. He’s got it all: gold, silver. It’s all His. Sickness? He created the body. Why can’t He heal yours and fix it? Why can’t He fix what He’s created? Of course, He can fix it. Why can’t He take care of marital situations? He caused marriages to come into being. That’s His idea. It’s not right that man should be alone. He started this. Now, we’re going to pray. We have before us—I’m told that we have about 120,000 prayer requests that have come in. It may be more. It’s coming all the time. But we’re going to symbolically lay hands on these that are here before us. And Terry and I are going to join hands. And we’re going to believe God. “I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?” “Father, we know nothing is too hard for you. And we come before you, Lord, in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And we speak the word of faith. Lord, the suffering and sickness shall go. The osteoarthritis, the blood conditions, the heart conditions, the liver conditions, the sore knees and the joints that are deteriorating, in the name of Jesus. And we bind a spirit of infirmity that may come upon you. And we speak words of prosperity that the Lord will bless you, bless you financially, in Jesus’ name. Receive an answer, and may there be peace in your home, in Jesus’ holy name.” Terry, do you have anything specific?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I just want to say that I feel led to pray also that the blessing of the Lord would come in spiritual ways and would come in physical ways to you, that every need represented here will be touched by the power and the mercy and the grace of Jesus Christ. In His name we pray.
PAT ROBERTSON: “I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for Me?” Yes, Lord. Nothing is too hard.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Thank you, Lord.
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen. Amen. Receive it. Praise the Lord for it. Take it into your body.

Well, when Tommy and Wendy Mallard met, they discovered they were two of a kind, the wrong kind. Then after they were married, their wild lifestyle grew even wilder, until Wendy said a prayer, prayed a prayer, that changed everything.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
TOMMY AND WENDY MALLARD
Tommy Mallard: The earliest memory was in sixth grade, before elementary school, behind the woods smoking pot, alcohol as a young teenager, and it just evolved into everything. They say pot is the gateway drug. I moved on to cocaine and LSD, and it just went on and on.
MIA EVANS: Tommy Mallard supported his addiction by dealing drugs, a lifestyle that took its toll on his new girlfriend, Wendy.
Wendy Mallard: When I met Tommy, I was an emotional wreck. I grew up in a very physically abusive relationship. So I was very rebellious and just wild, very wild. So, when I met Tommy we had a lot in common in that area.
MIA EVANS: The two lived together for three years before marrying.
Tommy Mallard: The beginning stages were very rough years. I drank beer and sometimes whiskey and hard liquor every day. And I definitely smoked pot every day. And anytime you are under the influence of anything, you don’t think clearly. And the smallest remark from my wife would sometimes just trigger an outrage.
MIA EVANS: Violent arguments became the norm in the Mallard household.
Wendy Mallard: Hitting and kicking and just physical. They were bad. And we lived like that for years.
MIA EVANS: Between the arguments, break-ups and separations, Wendy knew something was missing.
Wendy Mallard: I always felt like I was just searching and searching and searching for happiness, something. I was never happy. I could never be happy. I was never content.
MIA EVANS: Wendy found happiness when she accepted Jesus Christ at a local church.
Wendy Mallard: Even though I was saved, and I was a Christian, I still had these areas of my life that I didn’t know how to change. I didn’t really know much about the Bible. And I was growing a lot. And I was so hungry for it. I wanted to be at every open service and every Bible study. Anything that was going on, I was there.
MIA EVANS: Tommy reluctantly agreed to go to church with Wendy.
Tommy Mallard: It was I’m a Sunday morning Christian, because Monday morning I’m back doing this other stuff. She was living for the Lord, and I was not. And it was just the clash from good and evil in our lives that just destroyed us. And I remember telling her, just daring her to leave me.
MIA EVANS: Wendy had enough for herself and their three children.
Wendy Mallard: We were going to church, and we’re supposed to be this Christian family. And on the outside it looked good, but on the inside and at home, it wasn’t. It was him was still drinking, still smoking, the fighting still going on. And that’s when I said, “I don’t want to live like this anymore,” so I took the kids, and I left.
MIA EVANS: The Mallards filed for divorce immediately. The children, however, kept Tommy and Wendy communicating on a regular basis.
Wendy Mallard: And every time I would talk to him on the phone, it was always cussing and fighting and bitter. He was very bitter, and me, I was always cheerful and tried to be nice and sweet. And sometimes I would argue right back with him. We’d fall back into that same pattern. But I was still continuing to go to church. I was staying faithful and had my girls there and living my little life. I had conviction, because I knew God’s ultimate design was for us to be united, to be one and to live this life together.
MIA EVANS: Just 30 days before their divorce was final, Wendy changed her prayer for Tommy.
Wendy Mallard: I surrendered to God, “Whatever is your will, not my will.” And I called him that night, and he had just picked up his Bible.
Tommy Mallard: I didn’t know what to do or what to read. And I just opened up to the book of Matthew and started reading. And my wife called like 15-20 minutes later. I’m just laying in bed reading, just crying out to God, “What have I done?” So I just fell down on my knees in front of my coffee table, and I just started praying to God, and I just cried out to Him. And I remember lifting my hands up to Heaven. And that’s when my life changed. I stopped smoking pot right then, right there. I stopped drinking, right then, right there. It was a revelation when I really accepted Christ into my heart. It was as if the scales were removed from my eyes, and I could see clearly years of mistakes and how I was dead right. And I could see how I was dead wrong. And I remember looking into the past at every single thing that I did to my wife, the way I treated her, the way I talked to her, that was so wrong. And I thought it was so right. And I just humbled myself before the Lord. And I cried out. I was so ashamed once I realized the sin in my life.
MIA EVANS: Tommy shared his newfound faith with Wendy and wanted them to become a family again.
Tommy Mallard: Once I gave my life to the Lord, I knew that I had to at least attempt to salvage this marriage and my family.
MIA EVANS: Tommy and Wendy didn’t sign the divorce papers. Instead, they recommitted their life and marriage to God.
Wendy Mallard: I used to regret ever being married and regret ever thinking it’s just nothing but pain, and it’s just nothing but sorrow. It wasn’t peaceful then. It’s peaceful now.
Tommy Mallard: If you trust in Jesus Christ, He will change your life. He will take away the pain and the tragedy and the desperation. He’ll give you hope, joy, love, peace and, most importantly, everlasting life.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
PAT MINISTERS SALVATION
PAT ROBERTSON: Who could ask for anything better than that: hope, joy, peace, everlasting life. Some of you—don’t touch that. Just be still. Some of you have a rotten marriage. You’re fighting each other all the time. You’re fighting each other. You may have already filed for divorce. You may be divorced. You left and you wonder what you’ve done. You may have children involved. They’re crying out and hoping that you’ll get back together again. There is no peace in your heart. The Bible says, “There is no peace sayeth My God to the wicked.” Like the tossing of a troubled sea, you’re back and forth. You can’t get peace. But I’ll tell you how you can have peace right now. I’ll tell you how you can have joy in your marriage. They found it. The Mallards found it, because they found the answer is in Jesus. And if you want that answer right now, don’t go anywhere. I want you to bow your head right at this moment, and I want you to pray with me. Pray these words: “Jesus.” That’s right. Pray with me. “Jesus, Lord, you know the trouble in my life. You know the sin I’ve committed that has been done to me and what I’ve done to others. Lord, you know how I have sought for peace and have not found it. Well, right now I turn away from my own selfishness and from the sin in my life. And I turn to you. I admit, Lord, that I am a sinner and I know that you died for sinners. And so Jesus, right now, I turn my life over to you. And from this moment on, I will live for you and I will serve you. And Lord, my relation with others, my spouse, anything that is there, I give to you. From this moment on, it’s all yours. Come now, Lord, into my life. Take over. Change me. Change my marriage. It’s all yours, Lord, from this moment on. Thank you, Jesus, that you’ve heard my prayer. And thank you, Lord, that you’ve come into my heart.” Now, I want to pray for you. For those who prayed with me, in the name of Jesus, may you know the power of Jesus Christ in your life from this moment on. Thank you, Lord. Now, for those who prayed with me, I want to give you something.

GAY PROTECTION BILL
JOHN JESSUP: Welcome to Washington for this CBN Newsbreak. Two gay lawmakers are pushing a bill that will give gays and transsexuals federal protections from bias in the workplace. The military, along with religious groups and businesses with fewer than 15 employees, would be exempt under the proposed law. But opponents warn the bill’s language is too murky and could lead to an explosion in lawsuits. Critics also say for profit faith based groups, like Christian radio stations, would be denied any exemption at all from the measure.
ORU OUT OF DEBT
JOHN JESSUP: Oral Roberts University is debt free just a couple of years after being tens of millions of dollars in the red. Erasing the debt is welcome news for ORU. The school had faced allegations of financial mismanagement. Former school President Richard Roberts, whose father founded the university, denied the allegations. He later resigned. The billionaire Green family, which owns the Hobby Lobby craft store chain, has donated more than 80 million dollars to the Christian university. In addition to the Greens' donations, a matching gift campaign also brought in more than 22 million dollars for ORU. Well, you can always get the latest from CBN News by going to our web site at CBN.com.

BRING IT ON
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, we love to hear from you. We love it when you send us questions via e-mail. And we like to take time each day as we’re able to answer some of those questions. And, Pat, this first one is from Leon, who says,
“I’m trying to understand prayer. If I pray for one thing and someone else prays for the opposite, how does God know what to do? Does God always answer prayers?”
PAT ROBERTSON: I don’t think God is a little toy that you bang back and forth and He goes whichever way. God knows exactly what He wants to do in life, and the prayers that get answered are those that are led by His Spirit to begin with. And it’s not just something you just sit down and say, “Hey, I want a million dollars, God.” And the other guy says, “Don’t give it to him.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: He always does answer prayers, but sometimes the answer is no.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, He says no a lot. But I just think the idea that we just pray and things happen, it just doesn’t work that way. We’re in the Spirit, and we’re flowing in the Spirit of God. And our mind is His mind. We do what He wants, really, and then we pray. That’s how we pray. And instead of asking, we declare. It is done.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is from Lubna, who says,
“Pat, I’ve already been baptized, but I would also like to be baptized in the Jordan River in Israel. Is it okay for someone to be baptized more than once?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Lubna, I think so. I think the Lord is more than willing to give you that blessing. I’ve baptized people in the Jordan River. I’m sure they were baptized before, but it’s okay.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes. It’s really a remarkable opportunity to stand . . . .
PAT ROBERTSON: It depends on how sacerdotal you are. I’m a little bit more relaxed about these things than some are. But I think that the idea of getting baptized in the Jordan River is a big deal for people. Why not? Why not enjoy it?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Paul, who says,
“Why does it seem so difficult to serve God? It seems like every time I dedicate myself to God’s service a disaster occurs in my life, making service so difficult that I just want to give up altogether. Does a life given to God get easier or harder as time goes on?”
PAT ROBERTSON: In aeronautics, there is a principle. When a jet comes close to the sound barrier, it begins to be buffeted. And then it punches through and it’s clear and smooth and everything is great. There is point where in your life you’re going through to God, and there are things that you need to do and God wants you to do. At that point, you will be buffeted. And when you make up your mind, “Yes, I’m going to serve the Lord come what may. I’m going through,” things settle down. And they stay smooth from then on. But the Bible says, “In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” Don’t think that you’re going to have a bed of roses just because you come to the Lord.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, I was going to say, do you think it’s that things settle down or do you think it’s that our attitude is one of accepting God’s bigness?
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, our attitude, but at the same time it’s a declaration to Satan, like, “Satan, you tried and you failed. Now I’m going to serve God come what may.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: “I’m standing.”
PAT ROBERTSON: “I’m standing firm.” But if you’re shaky all the way, then he’ll hit you all the time. So make up your mind, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.” And when you make that decision, come what may, then things get easier.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is from Beth, who says,
“If Israel attacked Iran without US backing, could Russia and her allies come to the aid of their friend Iran? Do you think any of this is part of the final days that the Bible talks about?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Beth, it’s very close. The book of Ezekiel 38 talks about a coalition, Persia, which is Iran, Russia, Libya, Sudan, all coming together in the last days against Israel, a nation that has been drawn out from the nations of the earth. So will that happen? Well, the Bible seems to think so. And what you just talked about, whoever thought of Iran as being a player in world history? It hasn’t been for years and years and years, and all of a sudden Iran is front and center on the world stage. So could it happen? The answer is yes. Yes, it could happen. And it will happen exactly the way the Bible says it will happen. Read Ezekiel 36, 37, 38.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Latticia, who says,
“I love reading the Bible and listening to teachings from the Word of God. When I do, my husband gets angry and tells me to stop. I love my husband, but I love the Lord, too. How can I keep peace between my husband and me without abandoning God’s Word?”
PAT ROBERTSON: Latticia, are you reading the Bible out loud to your husband?
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, and listening to those tapes at high volume?
PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. I really believe that you can certainly read the Bible to yourself silently. And I just like to go off by myself to read the Bible. I don’t want a big crowd. I want to talk to the Lord. I want to listen to the Lord, and I want to do it in private. So I don’t think you have to—if you’re playing praise tapes or whatever at loud volume when your husband wants to watch the NFL football, I think . . . .
TERRY MEEUWSEN: My husband is a Christian, and that might not go down at my house either.
PAT ROBERTSON: You need to use a little wisdom. Okay. Well, the economic recession didn’t rattle Carol Mauro. She’s a CBN partner who has made a surefire investment that keeps her finances in great shape. How did she do it?
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
CAROL MAURO
Carol Mauro: I love CBN. I love watching the shows every day. I love the Christian perspective, and the testimonies encourage me. And those stories have taken me from some of my darkest moments and given me hope to get to where I am today.
DORY NISSEN: Carol Mauro not only watches The 700 Club, she’s a part of it as a CBN partner.
Carol Mauro: I love Operation Blessing, because everywhere there is a disaster, there they are. It allows me to touch people’s lives that I just can’t go and do on my own.
DORY NISSEN: Carol owns a successful licensed therapy practice. She admits it was scary to give when she first started out.
Carol Mauro: It was really difficult to just write those checks out and giving in faith. But I wrote the checks out, and I gave in faith, because I knew that God was going to be faithful. Even when fear would grip me, and I’d be like, “Oh, I don’t know if I can do this,” I would still do it.
DORY NISSEN: And as the business grew, she gladly gave more.
Carol Mauro: I made that decision because I know that CBN is making a difference in people’s lives, and I wanted to give more for them to reach more.
DORY NISSEN: Her successful business allows her to enjoy a relaxed life in sunny Florida.
Carol Mauro: For someone that’s afraid to take the step of faith and give to God when times are difficult, I’d say you just need to trust Him. Just give because He asks you to give. He’s only asking ten percent, and you get to keep the 90 percent, so why not?
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
PAT ROBERTSON: The Bible makes it real clear: give, and it will be given unto you, pressed down, good measure, running over will men heap into your bosom, for the measure you mete will be meted to you.

I really believe that. I believe in giving. I believe in God’s answer to prayer. And I think if we are faithful, He will be faithful to us. So if you’ve got financial problems, this is the way out. Or if you want to be blessed in what you’re doing, Carol has the answer. She learned the answer, and many, many thousands and hundreds of thousands of others have done the same thing. It is a principle set in the Bible. Now, we’re asking you to participate with CBN in reaching the world, helping the poor, helping the needy, helping feed those who are hungry and clothe those that are naked and to look after the medical needs of people. And for those who join our 700 Club at 20 dollars a month, I’m going to send you something called Miracles Beyond Measure.

TERRY MEEUWSEN: Louie and Shelly Giglio began a weekly Bible study on the campus of Baylor University. Today that study has grown into a worldwide outreach. Take a look.
SET-UP PIECE
RENELLE ROBERTS: For over 12 years, passion conferences have drawn thousands of young adults on college campuses around the country.
Louie Giglio: Don’t count Him out and don’t sell Him short, because God is huge. He is ginormous. He is greater than every thought we’ve ever had of him. Don’t count God out. You don’t know what He’s doing in the lives of the people that are right around you and you don’t know how close they are to wanting something in their lives that’s true and real.
RENELLE ROBERTS: Louis Giglio founded the passion conferences in 1997, and since then the conferences have grown in a worldwide movement.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
GUEST: LOUIE GIGLIO
TERRY MEEUWSEN: Please welcome to The 700 Club the founder of the passion conferences, Louis Giglio. It’s great to have you with us.
Louie Giglio: Thank you so much, Terry. It’s awesome to be here.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I love that your passion is young people. Young adults, but teens as well, college kids, because so many people see that as just a stepping stone to move into head pastor or whatever. And I love that that’s your heart. What is your thought about what young people today are looking for?
Louie Giglio: Well, I think the reason why I’m so passionate about university aged young people and pouring into their lives is because the university moment, as we call it, is really the crossroads of life. And it is the moment where a student is away from home, away from mom and dad, the church they grew up in, if they grew up in one, the youth pastor who shepherded them, and they are faced with every challenge, academically, morally, socially. And that’s where they decide, “Who am I? Who is God? And what’s the trajectory of my life going to be?” They’ve been wounded, a lot of them, by their past, disappointed in some cases by the church. And I want to be standing at that crossroads, pointing them to Christ, who heals the wounds and gives meaning and purpose for life.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And you started at Baylor. You moved to Atlanta. How did the passion conferences really begin to take off?
Louie Giglio: Well, we moved to Atlanta in 1995, my wife and I, because my dad was very ill and disabled. And we were leaving our campus ministry at Baylor to come help my mom take care of my dad. That was our whole purpose. And as we moved to Atlanta, my dad passed away. And so here we’re, Shelly and I, in Atlanta, no ministry.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: “What now, God?”
Louie Giglio: What now? And in that little window—sometimes it’s when we think everything has gone wrong that God is about to do His greatest work. And that little window of vision came and it was for the students of the nation. There are 20 million university students in this nation. Not just one campus, but now there is a picture for the nation. And that little spark, that little vision, has become a movement that’s touched the lives of students around the world.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And I think how applicable to that situation, what you said in the video piece that we saw was God is working when you can’t see it. You just have to know Him and know that sometimes and stand and wait for the call. What’s the cornerstone verse for the movement?
Louie Giglio: Isaiah 26:8. In fact, passion, if you boil it down, is about the glory of God.
GRAPHIC:
ISAIAH 26:8
“. . . FOR YOUR NAME AND RENOWN
ARE THE DESIRE OF OUR SOULS.”
And it’s simply about calling students to trade in little stories that they could potentially star in and call them to the grand story of God. It’s trading the starring role in a little story for any role in the great story of God.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: In the one that matters.
Louie Giglio: It’s a 180. It’s like, “Life isn’t about me. The church isn’t about me. Heaven is not about me. This is all about God, and He’s gracing me with a place in that story.”
TERRY MEEUWSEN: When young adults come to a passion conference, what happens? What do you do there?
Louie Giglio: Well, the teaching is deep and intense, because we want to reshape our thinking about God’s centeredness. And so you hear people like Beth Moore, John Piper, Andy Stanley, Francis Chan. And the worship is crazy and full on, because we want to give God everything we have.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: And speaking of worship, you’re involved with Chris Tomlin as well right now. And tell me about the church that you have.
Louie Giglio: We’re planting a church out of the passion movement in Atlanta Georgia. It’s called Passion City Church. We just met last Sunday night. It was incredible. And Chris is one of the worship leaders, along with Matt Redmond, who has moved from England, and Christy Nockels.

TERRY MEEUWSEN: Wow.
Louie Giglio: So we’re doing okay on worship leaders.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: I guess you are.
Louie Giglio: I don’t know how the pastor is going to do, but I think the worship leaders are going to do great.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: What is it when young people come to a passion conference that really grabs their hearts? What are they looking for that God has spoken to your heart about teaching on?
Louie Giglio: Well, students want their lives to count. Everyone wants their life to count. And when you’ve battered around and you’ve been wounded like a lot of these 20-year-olds have through their experiences in life, they begin to wonder, “Is God still there? Has God got a plan for me? Can my life make a difference in this world?” And the answer to that is absolutely yes. And the way it can is at the end of Isaiah 26:8, “For your name and your renown are the desire of our souls,” which means, “God, for your fame, that’s why I want to live.” I may be a sculptor, a painter, a teacher, a mom, a missionary, a musician, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur, but whatever I’m gifted at, I want to do that in such a way that it makes Jesus famous. And when I do that, my life takes on the greatest meaning and the greatest significance possible, because His fame outshines everything.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: In the testimony of the Egyptian woman that we saw earlier, she had a little thing down next to her that said, “The purpose of life is to have a life of purpose.” Young people are hungry for that, to know that they can have that and be a part of it.
Louie Giglio: Absolutely. And everything the world is saying is it’s all about you. So what do you want to do? What do you want to get? What do you want to have? What kind of life can you build for yourself or name can you make for yourself? But that’s a match that’s burning out very quickly. But there is a flame, and it’s the fame of Jesus. We see in scripture that His fame lights up the Heavens. The stars know His name. And His fame lights eternity. And so when my little five second life burns for His eternal fame, then my little five second life takes on eternal meaning.
TERRY MEEUWSEN: How can people be a part of your conference?
Louie Giglio: 268Generation.com is our web site.
