For a couple in their late seventies, Bob and Johanne Rose are in great shape. They fill their days in retirement hiking to the nearest fishing hole. But only a few years ago it looked like retirement was just a dream. The Rose’s were $40,000 in credit card debt. “Anything really we wanted we could buy it, credit card,” says Bob. “You’d pay the bill and the next statement would come and you find you’re getting no where. Plus, he received bonuses when the job met its deadlines. “We were getting those bonuses and so that went right on paying off the bills,” recalls Bob. Johanne says, “It was really a way to get ahead and save money.” In six years, the Rose’s paid off the $40,000 dollars in credit card debt and had money in savings. “There went one credit card bill then the next. Then when we got to the last one we rejoiced. I said we’re free,” says Bob. Before Bob and Johanne could retire they had a rental home they needed to sell. The problem was it needed work and the real estate market was stagnant. Still, their house sold quickly and they made enough money to buy their present home free and clear. “What Pat has said about reciprocity it works,” says Johanne. “I can tell anybody that it works.
