Back to Business After Durian

CBN.com Chief Gambo is the head of a village in Northern Nigeria.  And for as long as anyone can remember, the women of the village have had to walk more than a mile and a half everyday to collect water from this muddy pond.

As the only water source for the village, everyone bathed, washed, and drank from here.  They even had to share it with the animals

“Our people suffered river blindness and other diseases as a result of drinking this bad water but we had no other choice,” explains Chief Gambo.

A Missionary named John had been preaching to the people for three years, but they didn’t want to listen to him because the village is made up of Animists and Muslims. So when John saw their need for clean water, he contacted Operation Blessing (OB).

OB set to work right away, finding the right spot, and hiring a man to dig the well.  Very soon the well was delivering fresh drinking water for the whole village!

Chief Gambo says, “I was happy about the well because we would never be ill again.  Finally we had clean water to drink.”

This well opened the doors for John share the gospel.  This time the people began to listen, beginning with the chief and his family.

“I felt the love of God,” recalls Chief Gambo.  “God really loved us and had mercy on us by providing fresh water.”

Before long, the chief and his entire family accepted Jesus as their Savior.  Many other villagers did the same.

“I’d never known peace, but when I heard the word, I experienced Jesus in my heart,” shares Chief Gambo.  “Now I have great peace—no more worries!”

Very soon, a growing number of new believers needed a place to meet so they came together and built a church, the very first Christian church ever in that village.

Today, up to 200 villagers meet weekly in that church as a result of that seed sown through that Operation Blessing water well.

And the fresh drinking water in Chief Gambo’s village helped his family and his community to experience Jesus Christ in a personal way.

“I am full of thanks because CBN brought me great peace and this water,” says Chief Gambo.  “Thank you very much.”

Maylen’s family lost their home in a flash flood caused by Typhoon Durian in the Philippines. Their entire community was now under water. "We’ve lost everything," says Malen of the damage caused by the flood. Maylen was among the first in line to receive emergency supplies from Operation Blessing. Along with the basics of food and water, Operation Blessing provided clothing, medicine, and medical assistance for hundreds of survivors at this one evacuation center. Operation Blessing also gave Maylen a grant to put up a small convenience store. "This is such a big help to us. I am very grateful," says Maylen. Just a few months after the flood, Maylen’s family is back on their feet. Her husband has found work as a carpenter. And Maylen is enjoying running her small business from their new home. Her income helps provide for their family's needs and is sending her three older children to school. She also makes sure she sets aside her tithe for church every Sunday. And business is doing so well that Maylen dreams of putting up a grocery store in two years. "Because of this store, our lives are even better now than before the typhoon came," she says. "Thank you, Operation Blessing, for this new beginning. I will do my best to make this business grow even more," says Malen.
